Love seeing Larry in his element, V8 Supercars is definitely missing something without him around. Can’t thank him enough for the contribution he gave to racing in this country and how his engineering genius made everyone lift their game. He deserves every accolade that comes his way
Many thanks Danny!
Couldn't have said it better.
Bloody Legend LP. I bet this vehicle brings back many many memories of racing the Rallye for you Legend.
Jack , you must be so so proud of the Old Boy to get in and have an honest hard crack punching out the resto on an iconic racecar your Father Raced all them years ago in an Iconic Race that sadly no longer exists and is now only memories to the few that Raced it aswell as us old buggers that watched it in Awe mate.
LP & Jack, A TRUE PIECE OF MOTORING HISTORY IN THE RACE CAR WORLD RIGHT THERE
Well done legends, absolutely love it.
Yes very proud! Cheers!!
Jack you must be proud as punch to have Larry for a father. Your doing an awesome job too restoring the castrol cars in your own time. Two legend's doing what they love. Keep up the content guys, love it
Yeah absolutely, cheers!
Larry looks extremely proud of his handy work restoring the Volkswagen and very excited to get it finished and great work as always jack
Cheers
Jack love your work. Relax a little and enjoy the shoot. You are genius like LP. Regards Jules
How could they not like your videos Jack?? LP my favourite driver of all time 🏁 I ordered the book, hope I can get you to sign it during Bathurst
Fantastic channel. Nothing better than watching the great man and his genuine passion for what he does. Love it.🤘
I grew up watching Larry and his cars race. Amazing to see this channel now. Great stuff.
LP is the last of the owner drivers. So so good. Smart cookie definitely.
Larry’s smile seems to be the recurring theme here in the comments, and with good reason. Thanks for the content
So good to see Larry with a big smile on his face talking cars.
Love seeing the sparkle in LP's eyes when he talks about his projects. Larry is always one fella I would love to sit and have a beer with. Great job bringing this together Jack, I really enjoy the vids. Cheers, Andy.
Cheers Andy
Always great see Larry’s smiling enthusiastic face. Thanks to both of you for a peek inside the shed.
Good to see Larry, it’s a natural progression from V8’s to Veedub. I’ve had a 1973 Superbug since high school and I’m driving one that I’ve had since 1982, and it’s going well and I’m still loving it. What you’re doing to your VW will be lots of fun on a farm. Enjoy and thanks for sharing your project with us.
The VW’s were around well before the V8’s! This is a restoration of the the 1979 Repco Reliability Trial Rally Car
Jack thank you- another great episode - LP’s engineering skills are unsurpassed - You could make a complete episode of his “Well that’s another story” - thank you for the great episode - Regards
Haha yeah you're not wrong, cheers
I could listen to LP’s stories all day, thanks Jack
You're welcome!
Absolutely love it when we see Larry working away smiling awesome to see 1 of Australia's motor racing living legends, cheers for another Episode and update nice very, keep up the great work, cheers🍻🍻🍻 KC Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺🤝🇦🇺🇦🇺😎🙂👍
Cheers!
Love your work Jack. Larry is a national treasure you and all of us are lucky to have him around and sharing. Especially now that he is happy to tell some “secrets” that would have been priceless when he was building race cars
The smile on Larry's face, he reminds me so much I my own dad. Be proud Jack he's an absolute treasure...
Another great little video, and great to see the VW being brought back to life and not rusting away in the corner
Your both legends, thanks 🇭🇲👍
Cheers Andy
Thanks for the fantastic video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching!
Always been a fan of Larrys great content jack keep it up
Thanks, will do!
I love Larry when he won Bathurst in 93, I bought a VR commodore and Perkins engineering done some bits on it. . Had to wait 6 months for it, but it was great fun car. My first and last Aussie car…👍 Great character. Come across this channel by pure chance. Well done Jack..
Love this father son stuff
Cheers Stu
Good to see LP. That era of racing back in the 70's and 80's was quite special.
Cheers
I remember reading the writeup on the original rally. Larry really surprised everyone - I think he was in the top 5 when the got to Perth
I’m currently in the process of building up an EB Falcon with Glenn Seton’s 1993 Championship winning livery to race on a dirt Hillclimb track called Boisdale Hillclimb out in Maffra - Vic.
Would love to see Larry bring the VW out there, I’m sure the club would be delighted to have him come out and do some display laps or even enter a club event one time 🏁
Thanks mate bloody awesome
No problem 👍
If I was to close my eyes and see my Dad ❤️🇦🇺
Excellent 👍
Larry, I love old VW's. I had 5 thru High School and College as well as a couple of other vehicles. Always loved the Beetles. Even tho 2 of them I rolled over, but the other 3 remained upright and I great service from them~~.
Larry your a true legend thanks for all the Bathurst years.
You and brock got me into cars and now sharing that passion with my boys.
Cheers John!
Looking good Larry will be great to see it go again.
Cheers!
Sock puppet outbreak in the far corner of the shop Jack @3:50 I had the same problem a few years ago.
Hahaha good spot!
A great guy, has not changed, Had a great fly with him in the chippy many years ago at Romsey. He never forgets, and the meeting with him at last PI before lockdown warmed my heart as the welcome I got to have a chat.
The book sounds great
Yeah it's ace, not long to wait now!
Thanks jack , Larry looks so proud of how it’s coming together love your work
Cheers Brandon
Has LP written an autobiography yet? If not, he should (and he should record an audio book version while he's at it!). I could listen to him for days.
No not yet, we have a PE book coming out next month which is based around the PE side of LP, but there's chat about an LP specific book, pre PE!
Great to hear from LP Front wheel drive bug innovative that man!!
Cheers, it's not front wheel drive though! Engine is in the back!
@@perkinsengineering I always thought they had a spare engine in the boot, well thats what the blonde I went out with once told me :P
LP is a bloody genius.
And a national treasure.
Larry with his lights on
Great show
Cheers Sam
Thanks Jack and LP you are the MAN!!!!!, love watching what your up too and can’t get over your engineering mastery. My son has ordered your book for me as a Father’s Day present and can’t wait…
Cheers
Awesome, thanks for the support
Keep up the good work Larry and Jack! 👍😎🇦🇺
Great to see a update on the vw cant wait to see the finished product
Cheers Greg
Awesome as always 🤩
Thanks Jack and LP. Mega 👍👍👍
Cheers Mark
Awesome Jack can't wait to see the VW completed
Hey Jack your Dad is an absolute legend mate what a smart guy he is I still have a photo on my wall with my son Nathan and your Dad he was 6 then he’s now 28 boy they were great days cheers
Kevin
Cheers Kevin!
Of all the builds and modifiers I follow on RUclips this is the one I am most excited about seeing!
Cheers
Great stuff! Anything you guys are doing is interesting to see.
Cheers!
Good to see a update on the vw cant wait to see it finished well done L P
Cheers Greg
Keep up the good work Jack. It's awesome listening to Larry sharing some of his stories. I reckon he would have plenty to tell.
Love these videos guys. Keep 'em coming!
Cheers Paul
fuel tank inside the car makes sense to me when you think about it. protected by the floor and more consistent weight balance. imagine the change in weight over the front axle with full to empty tanks.
Larry is a very smart bloke.
Great to listen to the engineering explanations.
Cheers Gavin
Thx Jack, another great vid, keen to see the latest with the Landy
Cheers Scott, yeah the Land rovers have stalled a little!
Well done guys, keep up the great work 👍
Cheers Matt
Really enjoy all of your content, keep up the great work!
Cheers Duncan
Loving the different approach the old man takes with this project. Couple ideas I’m considering..
Need to give him a mic tho
Just stumbled on to your video, love seeing you bringing back the old beetle to life , I used to drive and pull apart VW’s for a long time , I actually bought LPs brothers old rally beetle off him about 25 ,30 years ago , yellow in colour , fuel tanks under the seats , front and rear suspension all been changed for more lift , it was a real beast . Wishing I still had it . I ended up putting the motor into my Meyers max buggy, which I turned into a lowered street car , it was fast down the 1/4 mile , best time 12.8 . Great fun . It will be great to her running guys . Would you have photos that and your beetle together racing back in the day ?
Hey Jack, love the videos, I remember reading years ago in a 1980s book about PB about the time he blew the motor in his XU1 during a rally and rolled to a stop next to LPs Holden panel van which had a blown diff. They put the XU1 diff into the van and LP towed PB to the next service point. Apparently at full noise which LP claimed was because he had to keep the tow rope tight. I would love to hear LPs memory of the incident. Could make a great yarn. I wonder if he has photos of the van.
Hi Mick, we'll have to ask him!
Thanks again Jack for another interesting vid of your dads project....I had to smile when he said there was no rust in the bodywork as the camera panned past the surface rust in the under bonnet area....maybe just minor stuff that can be rubbed off.
Haha yeah it's only some surface rust, nothing major 😜
Can't wait to see the finished product.
Also love the vids
Cheers Brad
Ooh must get the book.
As always Jack great vid. Nice to see LP again too. LP was one of my favourite drivers and I still have my 1/18 model of the 99 Perkins Engineering Commodore
Cheers Ben
Good on ya Larry , you're a champion mate . See ya building a time machine . And I bet it will bloody well work when it hits 88 miles an hour. Love ya work fellas
Cheers!
No doubt about it Jack your Dad a very handy builder and a great Driver.
Cheers!
Mad scientist looking at home in his lab, legend.
Good stuff!! 👍
Cheers Kyle!
Just watched Bx 90 and LP pops up👍
Jack, when you drive the car try and find a rough corrugated dirt road, that's where you will find out why the Beetle is so good. They just roll along at a ridiculous speed.
Yeah i've heard this, looking forward to trying it out!!
Totally agree. I was never a fan 'until' I drove one. Used to work at a dealership so drove all types, each and every day, some weekend fun in the dirt was included as well. Great fun!
Should do some Perkins merch with some of the cars, (Holden v8s etc)
We do some, check out our website www.perkinsengineering.com.au
Love seeing Larry doing his thing. Couldn't hear him tho. Maybe wire him for sound?
Really? I just played it back and you can hear him? We've had some feedback about making the overall quality better, which involves costs. Currently it's all video from my iphone!
@@perkinsengineering oh yeah can hear him but a fella is going yo yo with the volume knob between you and him thats all.
G'day Jack,
What a great episode I've been waiting for this one to see what Larry's been up to on the beetle. I'd love to hear the story about the fuel tanks that I'd be a goodin.
Hopefully when the vw is finished and where out of lock down we can have a track day. I'll bring my 63 beetle Betsie. Anyhoo you and Larry stay safe and healthy.
✌🏻 Peace.
Cheers Kevin
Ordered mine and one for my brother.
Good work!!
Your old man has that twinkle in his eyes like a Mad Scientist
Hope you do a video of the VW running around the farm. Maybe a time trial between LP and Jack...now that would be something!! LP fan from way back.
Haha now we're talking! That sounds like fun!
That's really cool.
Be awesome if you can nail down LP to chat about his landrover resto in the background sometime.
Needs to get to work on those and then he can. talk about those!
@@perkinsengineering I look forward to it 😁
Awesome to see an update on the Beetle. If memory serves me correct there were a few Beetles developed by the Perkins clan in those races, was it LPs brother George who also raced one? Keep the videos coming!
Cheers Phil. George Reynolds was LP's Uncle, and yes he raced VW's, along with Eddie Perkins (LP's Dad) and the brothers all did time in VW's 👍
great to see Larry so proud of that motor and the way its still good as new, are you going to paint the car or leave it as it is. as all ways great video Jack keep it up, cant wait to see the bug running
Leave it I think, it's too original with the original sticker work etc, just need to tidy up the repairs etc.
@@perkinsengineering leaving the car as it is, is really showing the carachter of the car and the harshness of the race on the car
Always great to hear L.P, I could listen to his stories for hours. Loved that interview with your Dad on Enforcer and the Dude by the way, that's a keep sake that you kids will look back at one day. I'm also guessing that the plans for the VW are more to do with the mechanicals and not so much how it looks which is fine. Looking forward to seeing the finished result. It's just a suggestion Jack, I'm into all things audio so you might like to explore using a lapel microphone for your Dad when you're having those chats with him. You're coming through loud and clear but not your Dad so much. Cheers.
Yeah i've just seen another comment about LP not coming through loud, I played it back and it sounds ok but getting microphones and stuff is all an expense beyond just using the trusty iphone 😂
Always loved Larry’s passion about engineering & loved the VS Castrol commodore and that famous Bathurst win.
I learnt to drive in my old mans VW & owned a couple myself.
Is this going to be for sale at any time soon? I’d be interested
I don't believe so...
I spent many hours on the Adelaide Control for the Repco. I do remember this car came in quite early and unlike the other 'Hollywood' teams that went off to hotels Larry and Terry laid back the seats and that was the hotel!!
I do seem to remember though the car rolled? Or crashed in the Flinders so was out of the running and cut and run to Darwin.
This car rolled in the 1979 Repco, it had a white body then. Then got damaged in the 85 Wynns Safari in the new green body guise!
Really enjoying this channel, thank you for posting.
A question if I may; are the two supports for the front beam off the Country Bug or Thing?
I have a ‘69 1500 Beetle daily driver which I love working on and keeping on the road, and I haven’t seen those particular supports before.
Will have to ask LP about this, hopefully get back to you!
Well done guy's, another rippa episode. Hey Jack, do ya reckon the ol boy will sneak an event in somewhere when the green machine is all finished???
Thanks! Maybe, it depends, most events you will need CAMS/MA Log Books, Licences, racing harness/seat belts, etc. and LP won't be interested in any of that!
Wow great episode to watch' Do you still have your Bell 47?
Negative, Rick Kelly actually ended up with the Bell 47, but he has since moved it on also.
@@perkinsengineering Right i remember you doing you license with us up at airwork,i painted the old girl for you. Jack was only a young lad when you flew it away
Thanks, LP and Jack love it ... the only similarity to my 1964 VW is the colour 😂
Haha is yours still shiny or a bit pastel like LP's?
@@perkinsengineering Hi Jack ... I haven't had mine for 50 years but it was the same colour and in a tad better condition than LP's is at the moment. Can't wait to see the finished project.
Loving the channel. even as a Ford fan, LP is my favorite driver of all time. have to ask, my brother reckons Larry had air conditioning is one of his race cars. is the any truth to that? keep up the great work LP & JP.
635 HP at the rear wheels group A specks in a VW ,, And no break pad change sure to be a Winner ..
Haha not sure about that!
@@perkinsengineering i knew you get back to that one , lol ,lol. Cheers to the both of uses ..
great video Jack, great to see LP doing what he loves and does best. One thing you can improve getting clearer audio when Larry is commenting, he is much quieter than you being further from the microphone, otherwise keep up the good work !
Yeah we will see what we can do!
Coming along nicely. I’d be really interested to hear what Larry would come up with for a new set of touring car specs/regulations as opposed to the gen 3 cars that will be coming out.
He doesn't know anything about Gen3, but maybe we could ask him!
I guess what I really mean is, what would he come up with for a set of regs for touring cars given the chance. We seem to be heading down a dead end. Doesn’t really matter what he knows about the gen 3 cars.
Cool
Just watched some old rally footage with a perkins vw oval 1955 i think , must be related
Loving the VW restoration. Not sure about sitting on a fuel tank though.
Type 3 rear drum brakes?
I owned a couple of Series 1 Fastbacks with drums all round in 70's and 80's.
The drums warped so bad I converted to 4 wheel discs from Sherman Conversions in Qld - now called Volks Conversions.
I'm not a mechanic but it was as easy as pie.
The weighted rear drive in the VW will be great on the dirt. Similar to the Renault R8 Gordini which won the 1970 Aust rally championship against the Monaro and XU1 (HDT I think?) with a lot less power. As for the ‘dislikes type people’ weld them into the exhaust system of the VW as a baffle!
so do you think i should retrieve the split window combi van from out bush in Central Queensland ? would it be worth the hassle
Awesome channel, can you do a video on the engines Holden and chev, building them, bits in the engine bay and why the hell the Holden v8 got banned
Yeah we will get some engine bay videos when we install the Holden in the 1993 post dyno. They are already built so we cant get any build videos unfortunately.
