John, thanks a bunch for nice note, turns out this was only the beginning, "Timothy is working on the bug" has become a typical response from my wife when someone is asking where am I! But everyone loves the bug and it's a blast to drive, well worth the effort. You got a bug or getting one?

To this day that was one of the worst decisions I believe I ever made. I always loved the original VW smell.... Good memories

Hey Keith, sorry to be delayed on this response. Along my labor of love of this restore, I constantly asked my departed owners "what would you do" for paint, not staying stock on this or that, should I spend for X, on and on, they were with my whether they wanted to or not. You know, probably not, but in spirit and my heart their memory is kept alive, until the bug hit the streets. Now there is a whole other chapter, people just love the bugs, so my departed family members get the love, not me, its for them. They gotta be happy with that outcome. For some reason they loved their bug, and now I do!!! I wish you tons of enjoyment, greasy hands, busted knuckles and googling Samba on your journey and destination for your bug. Mr G, if I could do it all over again, would do a bunch of things different. For those here that have done restores before, they got a lot of knowledge just cannot get any other way than from jumping in. I hope you do it and find some items in the video that point you in the right directions. When we drive it here in Fort Lauderdale, it gets waves, stares, smiles and conversations at red lights, who knew? Adding larger cylinders, 125 rockers, oil filter, and air conditioning is paying off!
Glad you liked it Mario! Turns out the engine case has been a bit too stressed over the last 300k miles, so we replaced it with a new one and added a well balanced fly wheel, 125 rockers, filter and V1 zinc oil, purring like a kitten and driving that air conditioner with no issues.
Not sure I would do it again, but it was a family thing and something they will enjoy, and better not wreck it but I know that day will come, the next dollar is on them! Thanks for the compliment, very much appreciated.

You dd a Great job of that! the car looks Beautiful, I have a 1974 FORD CORTINA Mk.3. owned it 44 years, now being restored to Brand New on my channel, due to extensive rust after standing outside for 12 years in the damp mountain air. over 40 panels got replaced, 36 layers of anti rust treatment, and 8 years of waiting and the car is now off to paint shop, so I hope she looks as lovely as your car when she comes back, love the blue on yours and the shine, and a lovely video to watch. always great to see a fellow classic car owner restoring their car..
HOLY MOLY BATMAN, thats some rust, dude, that stuff just makes me want to give up, I applaud your skill and dedication, wish you lived across the street, you got skills to mess with that much. Best wishes on enjoying your hard work!
@@CapnTimbo Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, and for your very kind comments, I think I surprised a lot of people by saying I intended to save a car that bad rust wise, after they saw the First video (The Start of the project) before the strip down, and a few more when the shell was once again Brand New, and rust & filler free, having been lead loaded on panel joins as per factory, (not too bad a job for my first attempt at doing that,)
Tonali, good luck with your restore. So true about bringing people together, I have noticed it also triggers something in bug lovers, I was leaving our parking garage yesterday and two young ladies yelled "I Love You Car", little kids stare. Thought it would strike a chord with older crowd, no so. Gotten in the habit of giving people a little horn toot, glad I got the horn working!
That's too bad you cannot find your family bug, I did not know it would mean more to me to do this for a car that took us so many places and created great memories with family, it was worth it, especially to the rest of our family. My nieces grew up with that car and want it.
Timothy H ,Until now, I have not lost hope in searching for my dear father's car, and that one day I will send you a picture of the car to make myself and my family happy One day i will
What a great job and now the car looks so cute. If you kept your video, only 8, 9 minutes, but made more videos, we would have the opportunity to learn more.
More to come! 2 more: 1 on the electric latch I made for the trunk, and I added a three gauge panel that required cutting dash metal while the car is still together, soon!
Great restauration project. Very entertaining video. Great fun to do with family for family. And a very nice end product: a Volkswagen Beetle, the most produced car in the world! Greetings from the Netherlands.
Bert, thanks for the nice note, here is a thing I did not see coming, my wife has fallen in love with it and wants to keep it, and that is from a woman who needs a Lexus! The beetle has a long life ahead with us and we are having fun with something else we did not see coming; when we drive people honk and wave and start conversations in parking lots, we now are VW ambassadors!

Timothy H hey buds I’m sure it must have been a challenge to start from a scratch till final product and I must say u have done a great job!! I’ve been trying to start my own project but don’t find the time...
Thanks Gerard, the family really appreciates saving a memory from our lost owners, but as we drive it up and down the A1A in Fort Lauderdale, a lot of people come up to the car to tell me there bug stories, always smiles and fun chats. The real surprise, kids love it, they always get a toot toot of the horn.
Hi Timothy you are welcome and yes i did man ;) i love the older cars and bike's to ;) if recently sold my car i had him for 25 years a Opel Record from 1967 and my harley from 1989 pfff if lost my job ;( i wish you a nice day or night and stay save greetings from the Netherlands Chiel
You are totally right about that, so stinking hot that day, but not a valid excuse. Never done this before, a fish out of water, those of you that know what you are doing are laughing at me, but I am laughing along with you, how I did not lose my eye when a wrench on a rusted bolt gave way I will never know. Maybe the luck of the Irish, glad its done though.
Thank you my friend, the family is happy for the save, and seems bug lovers where we live are too, its a rare day we go driving that someone does not stop us to tell about their bug stories, did not see that coming.
I have a 1973 Super Beetle and want to restore it like this except I am going to leave mine the original yellow color because in my state it is a big process to get the color changed on the registration and title and cost a $90 retitling fee so I am going to keep it the same color. I just have to get it running first I am a mechanic and have no clue what’s wrong with it lol.
Ha, when I took in the title it had the wrong year and the guy at the DMV was pretty cool since they cannot look up the VIN for much. He pretty much asked me what to put on the title when doing the transferring, and done! I think we Google the weight and some other stuff. I hope you DMV will be flexible.
@@CapnTimbo yeah mine is titled already since I am going to leave it the same color I won’t have to worry about it but everything is good I actually figured out what was wrong with it and got it to run.
The 1962 bug was the first bug to have a gas gauge. Before than you had to check your gas tank with a torch in your hand. Sometimes things got pretty hairy.
I saw a 72 yesterday where the previous owner closed up the external filler and redid a filler inside the trunk, the owner uses a dip stick. In my case spent a lot of time calibrating the gauge and bench testing as much as I could, am about 3 gallons off such that it reads more than there, would rather the other way round, but if under 1/4 time to fill, so far with that mental adjustment am ok, the speedomoter is off by 5 MPH using GPS, feel like gauge wise bug is dialed in.
Well it fell into my hands when the previous owner passed away (my son), and his wish was to restore it, so a lot of love put into, and now: A New Bug Lover (me)!
RUclips and the Samba, really lucky to have such a supportive community, am working on giving back, one video on repairing the welded fender nuts, another coming on retrofitting an electric trunk release
Out here in the West we cut the front and back ends off the Bug. Cut and twist the front end suspension. Get a thick gage piece of sheet metal for a skid plate. Buy a tri mill exhaust for starters and end up having a heck of a lot more fun than driving and old stock Bug around. But now days old VWs are getting hard to find. Bajas in their day was the way to go.
Dang, that is way beyond my level, I saw in Hilo HI they really beef them up and race them, impressive work ya'll do to customize these Bugs, I bow to the experts!
@@CapnTimbo People around here do that a lot. But I live in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Old VWs are hard to find and now the buy those Polaris RVRs or a Jeep like I own. Today is a perfect day to get out there. Seventy degrees and light winds.
@@CapnTimbo It is beyond my level too. My brother is an old VW mechanic. I used to watch him and his friends. Back in the begining it was very primitive but still loads of fun.
Thank you for the kind note, where we live the modern Volkswagen owners tend to park on either side of the beetle, I think it is to partner up, but I wonder if they are trying to protect it, even if not, we like the idea of it.
And then moved to Florida, there is quite a bit more support here for old VW's, I found a guy that helped me with all the things we did not get done in Richmond. Now its dependable and gets a lot of waves and stares, I have learned to keep an eye open for someone trying to get my attention to tell me about their bug of years ago while waiting at a traffic signal.

After close inspection there was very little rust, reasons, garaged a lot of its life, very good undercoating, lots of love and care by our family owners. If there was a lot of the bug rust, I would never have got this done, something for someone with great metal and welding skills and the tools.
I can only hope to coming close on the 20 year tenure, I fear it will end up with a relative that did not see that red light and it becomes crumpled foil, not a lot of metal there for sure. But for now, in very protective hands.
@@CapnTimbo He keeps it in my grandparents garage. It's tucked away in a corner and drives once every few years, last time it did it was about 5 years ago, him and I did some carburetor cleaning, painted over the mud on the wheel wells, replaced the drum brakes for disks. He lent the car for a wedding so he took the opportunity, it's still not great, the engine slowly looses power unless given extra gas but its been an issue it always had since he got it in the 90s. His first car I think, it has a very interesting story as I found out. He doesn't want to sell it but also doesn't have plans, he already has a lot on his mind, a 356 replica he built himself, restoring an early model karman ghia, family and recovering from surgery. I'd love to get a 68-72 standard, better yet if it has the improved rear suspension design, restore it and maybe EV it one day but it seems like everything is going up in cost and my country apparently got a surplus of 1302 back in the day as its all I see being sold under 10k euros.
@@freetobe3 The good news is you have one to so whatever you want to it, there are those that can even find one to adopt and make a project out of. If you find one in a barn it is probably seriously rusted out and you will need some great metal, welding and paint skills. I got lucky, my family took great care of the car, so I have to as well!
@@CapnTimbo I'm lucky, even though I'm in the Azores where everything rusts 10 times faster, I can easily buy a car off southern or central mainland that has a wonderful California like weather so a bug there wouldn't be in bad shape. I'm a quick learner with hand tools so I'd get on fixing a bug real fast. My uncle, since he is in the classic cars and bug community, he probably knows where I could get one for cheap and in good condition.

@@CapnTimbo Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, and for your very kind comments, I think I surprised a lot of people by saying I intended to save a car that bad rust wise, after they saw the First video (The Start of the project) before the strip down, and a few more when the shell was once again Brand New, and rust & filler free, having been lead loaded on panel joins as per factory, (not too bad a job for my first attempt at doing that,)
Dang! You did an amazing job on that bug!!
Thanks Gorilla Man!
Beautiful I did the same thing on my late Big Brother 914 Porsche Keeping in the family is worth more then anything
Beautiful!!! I love it, I'm working on my own beetle and it's a car that brings people together
Wow, you did an amazing job with this car. Beautiful!
Thank you very much! It's a bunch of fun to drive it and get honks and waves, but knowing I saved some family history gives me the biggest joy.
You the best , my dad was driving this car almost 25 years ago but unfortunately he sold it and I couldn’t find the new owner to do the same
That's too bad you cannot find your family bug, I did not know it would mean more to me to do this for a car that took us so many places and created great memories with family, it was worth it, especially to the rest of our family. My nieces grew up with that car and want it.
Timothy H ,Until now, I have not lost hope in searching for my dear father's car, and that one day I will send you a picture of the car to make myself and my family happy
One day i will
What a great job and now the car looks so cute.
If you kept your video, only 8, 9 minutes,
but made more videos,
we would have the opportunity to learn more.
@@CapnTimbo Hello Timothy. A beetle is a universal car. It connects people. What's not to like about a beetle? 😀👍
Very cool! Anyone in this video from Kaua’i , Hawaii? There was a KQNG radio bumper sticker in the window!! Awesome video!!
My brother spent a month there writing checks for Iniki when he owned the bug, there is a post here from a guy that was a DJ at the same time my brother was there, small world.
good job!, and finally someone that said it right, it's a body off restoration, not a frame off
Thank you for the nice comment Bob, Bob was my older brother and original owner, Bob's are good in our book!
What a wonderful job!! May you enjoy it for many years to come! 😊
excellent job....it feel to foot of the heart...nice work with nice editing like a fairy tail
Thank you very much!
Herzlichen Glückwunsch zu diesem großartigen Projekt! Super gemacht, super dokumentiert! Auch Spaß gehabt dabei! => Gute Fahrt!!!
More then great looks, it’s the memories attached with it and I felt them!!
Thank you Zubair, I think the rest of our family was surprised I would even do this, then thought I was crazy along the journey, and now happy the Bug rides again. You never know how the story will unfold!
Timothy H hey buds I’m sure it must have been a challenge to start from a scratch till final product and I must say u have done a great job!! I’ve been trying to start my own project but don’t find the time...
Finally! someone who said it right! Body off!... it's not frame off! Great rebuild/restore I did a '68 a couple of years ago!!
many congratulations for your restoration project, it was excellent, thanks for sharing greetings from MTY NL México
Thank you very much!
Beautiful work! I have a 72 super that needs the same treatment…. When can I drop it off?
Since the bug hit the road, realized a bunch of things I would do diff, do I want to do it again, probably, will I? Hmmmm..
Macchina meravigliosa,un lavoro perfetto!
Not enough for me to just 'like' this video, thanks for posting man it's a beautiful, joyful thing 👍
Very nice bild car i loved it nice colar bleu to ;) i was 15 wen i drove it im now 58 ;) greetings from the Netherlands and stay save Chiel
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, you did a wonderful job on the bug and editing..... loved it
Thank you 🤗
Brave guy using nitromors paint stripper without a shirt.. Great job on the restoration
Truly wonderful. Both on restoration and built with love for the family.
Thank you my friend, the family is happy for the save, and seems bug lovers where we live are too, its a rare day we go driving that someone does not stop us to tell about their bug stories, did not see that coming.
Saludos desde Asunción Paraguay.
Nice work guys! Awesome build 👍
She came out beautiful great work!!
Thank you Saint James Amos, we have been driving the Bug around town and getting some waves and honks, been a fun journey.
I HAD A 71 & 72 BEFORE THEY ARE FUN LITTLE CARS ! 😁✌
Hi superbe restoration,congratulation.
Thank you Bruno, writing this response is making me want to go run an errand in the ol blue bugger!
Awesome !!!!!!!! VW guy here.
Very nice amateur restoration guys!😎😘🤗😊
Yes, thank you
The 1962 bug was the first bug to have a gas gauge.
Les quedó muy bonito execelente trabajo maestros👏👍
Muchas gracias.
Nice choosing vw
Well it fell into my hands when the previous owner passed away (my son), and his wish was to restore it, so a lot of love put into, and now: A New Bug Lover (me)!
@@CapnTimbo im sorry
Saludos desde Brasil 😎👌, tu auto vw estas full man, very 🙂, wonderful 👌⚠️
Greetings from Brazil ! Nice job
Thank you DrPraTudo from Brazil, what's the status on Carnival? It's on my bucket list to be there for that, but with COVID-19....
Awesome job, love the outcome 😍👍
Fantastic...... Amazingly restored bug.....I think it's much perfect than original.
Glad you like it!
Lots of VW knowledge there. Very nice!
RUclips and the Samba, really lucky to have such a supportive community, am working on giving back, one video on repairing the welded fender nuts, another coming on retrofitting an electric trunk release
beautifulll congratulation - work like a German; Greetings from Germany
Danke! I learned a lot about the beetle (Europe) / bug (US) from historic videos, this was a journey well beyond turning wrenches for sure!
Congrats man! great job!
Thank you Roberto:-)
What a great job. Love it
Out here in the West we cut the front and back ends off the Bug.
Beautifully job done
ganz schön gw.vw.gerettet.
Excelente trabalho. Parabéns!!!
Fantastic restoration! Very good job!
Recife, Brazil!!
braulio gonçalves an how will bring me one like this as a gift it’s my dream car
Congratulations on restoring your family member to their former beauty. It gorgeous 😍
Thank you for the kind note, where we live the modern Volkswagen owners tend to park on either side of the beetle, I think it is to partner up, but I wonder if they are trying to protect it, even if not, we like the idea of it.
I second that. You did great job. That's a lot of work.
That came out beautiful..awesomeness cant wait to start mine.
Ruben, ensure you hook into the samba website, besides youtube it was a great place for help.
Many thanks, I really appreciate your note, never gets old hearing from a beetle lover.
ESO SI ES AMOR A UN BOCHITO! PERFECTO.
Just now seeing this video. Been working on a bug off and on for way too long. I see you're actually located locally to the Richmond area as well. :)
Great work , the Käfer deserves it !
One word. Magnificent !!
Love the blue color
The backstory is we painted it twice, the 1st time the paint did not quite match the swatch!
Nice and very good work .
Thank you! Cheers!
well done .
This is the most beloved car in the world !!!
It definitely is in our family!
Did you do any rust repairs to the body or chassis? Most of my work is unseen under body and frame repairs
After close inspection there was very little rust, reasons, garaged a lot of its life, very good undercoating, lots of love and care by our family owners. If there was a lot of the bug rust, I would never have got this done, something for someone with great metal and welding skills and the tools.
Nice work! Great blue paint!
Thank you very much!
Very good gob !!!
Wow, buen trabajo, excelente vw Felicidades!
My uncle has a 1302 he rebuilt and painted that same color 20 years ago. It doesn't have the same spit and polish as yours does though.
