Really enjoying this channel. The behind the scenes look at a peak engineering race team is fascinating
Very interesting, it’s great to see the evolution of the cars and the change to composite panels. Thanks Jack 👍🏻🇦🇺
Nice job Jack, By the way, your gig at Townsville as a pit reporter for the Supercars was first class. They had the right man for the job without question.
Thank you kindly!
Thanks Jack, for the new upload.
I'm from south island new zealand...
For my 21st birthday in 1993,,, mum and dad shouted me a trip to Bathurst 1000 that Larry won, I've been a Perkins fan ever since, We had a D2 on our farm, I did a pony motor rebuild on our one too...Sorry to see the crash and car fire up in Townsville last weekend.
Good luck for the future and hope one day to meet you to sign my 1993 black Bathurst 1000 corduroy cap.
Kindest Regards Phil
Good stuff Phillip, thats a cool story!! Cheers for the support.
Cool jumping. You are doing a sensational job resorting those cars. Keep the videos coming Jack. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃
Thanks 👍
Hey Jack, loving the insider look at V8’s evolutions. Great stuff!
Cheers
These are my absolute perfect RUclips videos 😂 I could listen to experts like your self going over race cars in the finest details all day long! Thanks so much for these Jack!
Thank you for this i do really appropriate it. I would like to see more of the engineering of the parts you show. like the air jacks but dissembled. like you did in the slide manifold. the center wheel nut hubs. Its really nice to see
Yeah we will endeavour to do more with what parts we have available. Cheers!!
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that more road car parts equals better and more spectacular racing, anyhow great stuff jack love this channel
Thanks for this video Jack, great inside information and very well presented. Biggest suprise here for me is the fact you guys have kept the old race cars like the good old VP and VY's. I thought these wouldv'e been sold off years ago, but i'm glad you guys kept them and i can't believe the condition of all these beautys. Great presentation mate and i look forward to your next video champion 👌🤙👍
Thanks Darren, we actually only kept the VY! The VP we bought back with a view of a proper restoration!
Great video. still learning heaps from you about the changes over the years of the cars
Cheers Dan
Awesome. That moment when he pushed on the door skins of the VF, for a moment, my heart skipped a beat. The way they just return, is definately a good reason to not use steel panels.
Fantastic! The flickering video is the LED lighting in the factory which can't be helped, especially in this dark winter. Technology leapfrogging itself again! Cheers Jack.
Congratulations on 10k subscribers Jack. Well deserved Mate 👍👍👍
Thanks Mark!
Love your work Jack. Hope to see more of you commentating supercars.
Cheers, thank you!
Very cool jack thanks for your insights into things we would have never seen otherwise👍👍👍
Fantastic look at the evolution of racing cars. Thanks Jack!
Glad you enjoyed it
In case you were wondering, Jack, you ARE being watched from around the World! I live in the Colonies. Specifically, in North Carolina, the *home* of NASCAR. But Supercars are a MUCH better series, IMHO, and I truly enjoy the look back at the evolution of Supercars, since I wasn't able to follow you back then.
Cheers!!
Love all the small details and ideas used to build these cars. Great lateral thinking. I was surprised that the VF is shorter than the road car. Really appreciate you doing these little clips, they are very interesting. Thanks.
Jack... sensational video and explanation of the differences across the generations... Full credit to you for sharing these in detail. It would be great at some point to get Larry's input of why and how he did things that he did. Also some detail from 'Monty' Burns and the engine building. 👍🏻🇦🇺
Wow. So much more than most of us really thought about. Just to see how much they changed in that time period. I remember the cars from the late 60s that were driven home after Bathurst. Completely worn out. Fantastic presentation , as always.
Cheers Mick
Great video and detail Jack, yes very surprised there was that much road car in the VF and also where it got shortened.
The presentation of these cars is incredible!
Fascinating and informative. Thanks a bunch.
Seriously Jack the restoration you’ve done on these cars is next level!! Fantastic stuff and love these insights, very interesting and informative. Cheers mate can’t wait to see them in person hopefully. 🏁🏁
Many thanks!
These videos just keep getting better and better! Loving it!
Another awesome video Jack! Can't wait for the next one
thanx Jack for showing us this stuff and this was very awesome to see
Great job Jack. Be interested in a video on how the VN / VP front end was modified for racing.
Fantastic video jack, Supercars should take note this is what fans want to see
As always ... thanks, Jack. Fascinating stuff.
just fantastic stuff , so much knowledge onya Jack
Thanks Jack. Very Interesting stuff.
Great work Jack, keep the content coming!!
Here I was about to go to bed when this popped up in my feed. Another fascinating video as always!
Awesome stuff, loving these videos
All cars are lovely to look at. Loving the series Jack.
Well done Jack, the series of videos is great, I could watch videos on these things all day.
Thanks for putting it all together 👍
Thanks Jack. This is the first video I've watched and it is very interesting. I'm looking forward to watched the rest. Cheers.
They certainly have changed over the years
Thanks jack thoroughly enjoyed that 👍👍👍
Great video, great info, very cool.
Wicked video Jack loved the change over the years
These videos are great, thankyou guys 👍👍👍
Interesting, keep the videos coming!
Thanks, will do!
Thanks Jack! Great insight. Great videos!
Loving the insight, thanks 👍
That’s great info jack. Keep it coming dude 👍🏻
Nice history lesson. The next generation could take some lessons from the VN & VP days. Less Aero and more driver skill. Thanks for the sharing this wonderful history and memories.
Fascinating insight, thanks Jack.
Nicely done Jack 👌
Great stuff Jack thanks
Incredible mate.
Great work Jack!
Great job, Jack 👍
An actual road car, back when bathurst was worth watching
Great really enjoyed the insight
Love this jack would love if you could do a comparison series between say your dads 93 car & glenn seatons 93 falcon 👍🏻
That would be cool, not sure the 2 cars would be ever under the same roof!
@@perkinsengineering one can only try
great viewing as always :)
Hey there Jack. Would really love to hear your dad talk about the special cast 5 litre blocks from back in the day at some stage. And whether he knows of any still hidden in back yard sheds or 'special' car builds.
We might need to get him on the beers for some of these stories!
I had no idea about the shortened wheelbase! Very odd to do that, must haves been an expensive task!
It was all about keeping the racing Fords and Holdens the same. At the time it was the right thing to do, but a massive investment from GM Holden. Imagine the costing in seperate pressings for roof skins, rear doors, etc. Just for Racing!
We need a video of the engines and the evolutions they went through over the years
Yeah we will work on that!
Very cool, thanks 👍
That was pretty cool and interesting
Sorry to see what happened to you over the weekend racing look forward to seeing you take the win a Bathurst
Good stuff Jack
Thanks
Love your commentating too jack.
Cheers!
That VF is hot🥵
That retro jacket...still have the same T-shirt
How good!
@@perkinsengineering The only piece of clothing that has lasted in my wardrobe and various relocations around the country lol..bit worse for wear but still in one piece...use to use it over my armor when riding dirt bikes
Very interesting vid, did they used to dip the panels to make them thinner and lighter? Cheers.
We didn't know. Some of the panels were made for racing, like the doors without the road car intrusion bars and stuff. I believe there were some light weight body shells at various stages too.
Was that rear door trim vacuum formed from a factory door trim? I noticed the ashtray impression.
Yes, its a fibreglass version
Love that retro sweater Jack, any thoughts on adding them for purchase?
Maybe, however its an expensive exercise !
@@perkinsengineering My first thought was maybe there would be some sponsor issues with this too perhaps?
well that was cool
G'day Jack,
Great video thoughly enjoyed it.
Q. The VF Commodore you mentioned the rear doors being shorter. How much shorter does this make the race car compared to the road going car.
Stay safe and healthy man ✌🏻 Peace
I think it's around 100mm
@@perkinsengineering That's four inches for us oldies.
Hi Jack, Wow another great episode mate👍 keep up the great work please.
Cheers
I suddenly feel very old!
Whats the plan once the cars are rebuilt jack?
Get them back on the race track!
they might be purpose built race cars... but they are beautiful works of art aswell!
The VP Commodores, EB Falcons looked the best IMO, maybe because they resembled the road going versions more I guess
Did Larry run the Holden 304 in the VP? Think the switch to the Chevy engines were around that time
Yes in 1993 the VP was powered by Holden, moved to Chev in 1994 👍
What was the water bottle on the inside of the VP's left rear door for mate?
That's the windscreen washer bottle!
@@perkinsengineering lol, cheers, thought thats what it was, just the placement had me wondering.
looks like the rear quarters were pumped out a little for extra clearance which every vn vp needed
Especially the ones with chopped springs that pushes the diff across.
@@generalwaste2062 i made a panhard rod adjuster myself after 15 years its still holding up if i can do it surely the odd mullet wearer can LOL
Hi Jack. Forgive me if I’m intruding but what is the go with the VF? Is it a customer car or is it in your shed so as to be used in your comparison videos.
I think it would be awesome if your father gave his thoughts on the vehicle’s. Thanks for sharing Jack and I’m looking forward to your other vehicles. By the way those vehicles are looking very good and a credit to you and those who are restoring these race vehicles.
We own the VF 😊
@@perkinsengineering Awesome. Has your Dad had a drive in it and what are your plans for it?
@@tomnewham1269 we are still restoring it. It’s nearly ready to hit the track again. Therefore none of us have driven it as yet!
First like 👍🏻 good stuff mate
Gen 3 really needs to get back to the 1993 cars level of downforce. By the size of the front splitter & rear diffuser & wing. How much of a difference there is
I assume the last car with the production body shell (although cut out due to Project Blueprint) was the VE
Nah VY/VZ. VE used a different floor pan custom made for Supercars based on shortening the wheelbase to match VY/VZ and the Ford
@@perkinsengineering Ok and what about the Falcon? Was the FG shortened too?
Hey Jack keep the vids coming bud. Does your dad not get involved with these cars anymore????
Hi Steve, nah not really, in his words "I'm retired"!
@@perkinsengineering lol well good on him and much deserved! Well done on the vids Jack, please keep em coming as sometimes this is better than the racing atm.
What's the main reason wheel bases were shortened?
To maintain the wheel bases between the racing Holden and Fords. In the Project Blueprint era of VY/VZ and BA/BF the wheelbases between the cars were the same. Then the VE road car platform came out with a longer wheelbase. It would've been unfair to Ford teams if Holden raced with a longer wheel base.
Show quality at it best ..
Okay my memory can be sketchy. But did the 2015 car really have my footy team on the b-pillar 'back in the day'?
If your footy team is Collingwood then yes! Holden sponsored them and the State of Origin NRL so that signage was on the cars all season
@@perkinsengineering awesome. Must be the same time their home base changed name to the Holden center.
Thanks for the reply. Cheers from New Zealand.
Is the dashboard from the road car?
In which rocket? VP and VY yes, VF is a carbon fibre copy
@@perkinsengineering So the VF’s screen is just a iPad or something?
Supercars lost it's way when they designed race cars that look like road cars.. Was kind of cool to think the car in your driveway was similar to the race car on tv..
I really dislike it when people rag on about Supercrs not bing produion based and that's why it's going down the toilet. To me the car looks like a road going Commodore with Racing aero equipment. If we were production based still a lot of the smaller crashes would result in being out for a race or weekend and also being a costly repair or re shell.
Bugger , someone beat me for first
I'm one of the people who can't stand these fighter jets nowadays
Racing was much better when they ran road based cars. Over regulation has ruined the Supercars for me.
Having the road car platform was good but unfortunately nothing is forever and the road cars started changing size, wheel base etc. so achieving parity became much more challenging.
The cars became less and less 'cars' as years went on.
The VP with a factory body shell is a LOT stronger as a car than the imitation VY which were starting to be riveted together. And road cars never had alloy bonnets and boots. As for weight how much less does the composite weigh than factory steel. The factory ones weigh bugger all to start with. Ditto quarters etc. And how much extra do they cost,,, shitloads!
These are Touring Cars that became obese Sports Sedans.
Why does the 93 car have VN tailights and boot bezel? Weird
To be fair, the VY still uses a road car floor and body shell. They started riveting factory panels on the cars so they were easier to repair at the circuit, less people going home early!
I'm fairly confident the VF road cars use aluminium bonnet and boot, which is why they are used on the race cars.
With regards to weight, it depends on the part. Front guards and rear quarters would be easily half of the weight in composite. Once the composite moulds are made, the components are actually not that bad price wise, and they will last a lot longer than factory becasue they can be repaired and are a bit more durable.
The 1993 car currently has dummy tail lights in it, and the VN boot garnish is what they fitted to the car in 1993 so we've just restored it to the same condition and specification.
Jack is absolutely correct about the VF road cars using aluminium bonnets and deck lids.
Other weight saving measures by the factory around that time also included things like an aluminium subframe for the front suspension.
