Allan is such an underappreciated builder IMO, everything he makes is superb. LOVE THIS FILTER.
I think so all the AJH modules are excellent.
That was a really fantastic video Ben. Not just a walkthrough of the device's features, but a great tutorial full of tips and tricks on working with a dual filter. Thanks!
nice one thanks Dan appreciate that.
received this filter yesterday.. it's hands down the best sounding filter i have ever tryed plus you have control over everything !! a must buy
Yeah AJH stuff often feels like that :)
Another great presentation! The little spectrograph in the corner is a great touch.
cheers! I'll try to include it more in the future too.
Amazing filter and demonstration… thank you so much!
thanks!
fantastic vid Ben!
thanks Richard.
I was recently looking at filters and was swaying towards getting the jove,
This puts a MAJOR spanner in the works....... dunno whether to thank you or curse you ;)
This sounds absolutely fkn amazing. looks classy too, simple layout is best IMO (some manufacturers seem intent on making their modules confusing..... lookin at you makenoise :)
thanks or curse, either is good! haha.
I don't think anyone would regret grabbing a filter from AJH.
Incredible. Some of those sounds were so lovely and vocal I lolled. *sells kidney*
good luck with the single kidney thing you'll be rocking! haha.
chewy! loving it so far....
chewy indeed.
picking this up next Friday :o)
awesome demo, lm speechless : )
full demo is filmed and I've been editing it all night. So we'll be good for that going live on Wednesday so watch out for that too.
thanks ben, look forward to that : )
cheers Martin.
I just bought one of these, I'm so excited! I bought it to extend my Model D and Pro-1 sound palette. Can I send you some demos of what I end up doing with it?
Just putting my first eurorack together and was trying to decide on a filter. Im going for this! Great vid, very informative! Cheers
Nice one Matt, good luck with the journey into the eurorack world.
AJH makes a 2HP "Gain Switch Multi".... which you place near your 2412, and it has 2 switches that are connected to the 2412 rear jumpers.
..... meaning you can enable/disable the jumpers from the front.
Great demo! And great filter! Thanks! Is it possible to use the two inputs to mix two VCOs before the signal goes to the filter? Otherwise one would need an extra mixer.
Just shitcanned my plan to get a 2nd Doepfer SEM. This is amazing.
:D happy to shitcan your plans Josh haha.
Great sounding filter. Love that middle section. Great to use as submix to FX as you demonstrated. Also about time a manufacturer gives a variable out (LP/HP) in addition to individual outs per filter type. I can't think of anything missing from this module. May have to replace my Korgasmatron II with this (if I can afford it).
Allan does amazing work, I tried them first hand at Synthfest back at the start of October and even early prototypes then you could tell this would amazing. The Finaliser R-EQ and Mega-Phase 12 are here and sounding great too.
I'm dying for Mega-Phase 12! It blew me away in your Synthfest video. Really going to have to budget that one because I know it won't be cheap but you have to pay for quality. But I have to say, that's what I love about designs like this and MP12, they give you every option you could possibly want. It's worth paying extra for a modules that settles things once and for all! I'm experiencing that now as I begin to explore Buchla.
I'm certainly "buchla-curious" but in terms of other formats I find Serge to have a certain allure at the minute. I have a friend building me the DIY 73-75 system that came out a while ago. Hoping to have that in a couple of months.
What lured me to Buchla was how different it is from anything else I use. From programming to sonic character it's something I can't reproduce using eurorack or classic gear. I've started with a used LEM4 Snoopy which is just 261e duel VCO, 2x lpg/vca, 2x env/lfo and I'm blown away by what I can do with that little bit of kit. Also MIDI-CV and CV-MIDI conversion, including conversion of 1v/octave to Buchla's 1.2v/octave and vice versa. So I'm set up to integrate with euro and the rest of my gear.
But the biggest lure was my obsession over the 252e Polyphonic Rhythm Generator, which is the most insane sequencer of all time. Incredibly complex but with very straight forward controls and no menu diving. Capable of time relations I've not seen available anywhere else. I can only imagine the crazy, drunken rhythms I'd get out of it. I dare you to take a look at Todd Barton's short tutorial videos. The thing is a monster (a $3.3k monster)!

Wow! i just got this filter today and it's better than I thought it would be. I think I watched this video like five times waiting for it to arrive and it did not prepare me for how awesome it sounds! There is so much variation and sonic potential in the features, especially the D section in the middle. It really sounds top notch and the resonance is killer on this thing! Blew me away! (I also have the Minimod Transistor Ladder, Sonic XV Diode Ladder, Korgasmatron 2 and Tiptop Z2040)
Hi Shane glad to hear that. It really is one of those modules where you just turn a few knobs and everything sounds really good. It's so finely tuned and well developed, Allan did a fantastic job.
Sounds great! Is that the Finalizer R EQ and Megaphaser on the left that you are doing next?
/wishful thinking :)
Mega Phaser isn't here yet. Finaliser R-EQ I'm in the middle of filming patches for. Mega Phaser is turning up this weekend for a quick turn around with video coming on Wednesday next week all going well. Finaliser R-EQ will be done in bits and online before the new year.
Oh my. Really want a dual filter in my rig. Was looking at Vermona, but this could be a winner.
not tried the Vermona to compare but this is stupidly good, as is everything Allan touches.
Can't go wrong with the Vermona, I used to own it, although you can only have separate outs with the expander. AQA Elektrix one is quite similar, expensive.
There's a few dual filters around but not many offering the flexible of this one.
Agreed. They have my money. I really want this and a Belgrad. I have a Three Sisters, Cinnamon and a Polivoks. I think the Gemini and the Belgrad are gonna blow those other ones outta the water. Different flavors, but still.
The AQA/ACL is extremely good..I own a ton of AJH Synth but I seriously doubt one is better than the other when it comes to their dual SVF..the Vermona with the expander also has as many outs and features and also sounds extremely good.
Nice! What software provides the spectrum in the lower left?
That's a the meter plug in that's default in Logic.
Just thought: This + DLD..........mind blown.
oh my!
Very good. Seems extremely similar to the AQA/ACL one, except this has the built in mixer and that one has bipolar attenuators for res cv for both ins. That one maybe a little more liquidy. But other than that..
I haven't seen much of the AQA one but there stuff does look good too. Is that also SEM based? I love what Allan does in that he doesn't just base it on a known "classic" he's gone back to the original, earlier designs for the circuit. As he did with the Model D.
Yeah, their marketing is pretty shit. I guess so, in a sense, since it has the variable notch? Sounds more Roland vintagey I suppose you could say, the AJH sounds a bit more raspy: audiophilecircuitsleague.com/manuals-eng/dual-state-variable-vcf_eng.pdf
Yep, Allan is the best..still have more AJH modules than any other company.
looking at the panel you've a less comprehensive middle section. At least in terms of layout. It's not easy to see what's actually mixing across in series or parallel etc. But still, I'm sure it's a solid unit just one not many know about.
DivKidVideo it's pretty easy to follow and use. It's extremely
Versatile, but if I didn't have it I'd go for the AJH. It's just that much like some other German companies, they fly below the radar and don't seem to really believe in marketing or much in the way of promotion.
Those formants at the beginning ? How did you make them ? Thanks for your time.
Which bit? All the previews in the first minute or so are patches from later in the video. I've also timing links the sections in the video description so you can navigate the video better. But tell me a time for the video and I'll figure it out.
got it, thanks again
WOW! I have been dreaming of this! Anyone know where we can buy in the UK? A quick Google hasn't turned anything up for me...
best ask AJH direct at this stage I think, I know they're building them at the minute.
DivKidVideo I've done that actually. You got the first production model! :) There should be a few around come January - Signal Sounds and MattTech Modular I think for UK distributors.
Both great shops with nice people behind them so ordering at either is a good thing.
In sequential OB-6, you can easily modulate the filter type (going from LP to Notch to HP) with the LFO, as if Gemini had a CV input for its Vary knob.
I am still thinking will puting filters in parallel, feeding the SAME input to both, setting the first filter to LP, second to HP, and modulating between the two filters, can simulate the modulating the Notch filter on Sequential OB-6 or not?! Any ideas?
I wish if he had shown this. Or showed at least how the Vary knob is implemented in Gemini.
wait no, the vari knob on ob-6/SEM is really just a mix knob of the LP and HP filters. when both are mixed at 100% volume you get a notch filter. No need to use two filters to do this :)
however if you want to easily morph from LP to notch to HP like on an SEM filter you will need a mixing module :(
to get this to work with the Main out is not possible. I'm talking about using the LP and HP out into a mixer. I don't use the main out Or the Knob. then you can use CV to morph the volume of the LP and HP out and use an LFO to morph between the two
This seems like such an awesome filter. But I can't understand why manufacturers don't label their normals on the face plate? Companies like MakeNoise makes a habit of doing this. It makes their modules seem very intuitive, even the more complicated units.
With really clean graphics I can see how lines, or dotted lines would make it look messy but it's definitely helpful from a user point of view.
sounds amazing - any price info?
not sure of price, but I know stock will be retailers in January. The modules are made on the AJH pick and place machines right now.
UK retail price is GBP 345.00 including VAT
there we go from the horses mouth as it were ... now to stop calling Allan a horse! :)
a bargain for two filters really, on my shopping list... an a/b comparison video between this and the Moogah SEM VCF would be dope
I don't have the Moogah SEM so definitely not possible at the minute.
Dat croak.
yeah throaty, croaky, all those descriptors! :)
Pocket operator never sounded so good :)
sooo creamy
it's gorgeous.
Sounds like a formant filter at certain settings.
Yeah the dual peak stuff works really well for that.
@@DivKid I just got this .... I also have the SSF dual filter... I will compare.
The other dual filters are the ACL version and the Vermona and the Intellijel morgasmatron 2
I'am Back in 1974 Brill Rkid
haha nice!
I defy anyone to not do 'filter mouth' from around 37:18 on.
haha
...yes...you said..."attenu- haters"...yes i could hear it...you said it!...at 17,32...ahahha!
haha those god damn attenu-haters! haha
ahaha!
Man I really love the functionality in this module, but it just sounds too clean for my tastes :(
add an RYO Optodist as a post filter VCA with saturation and clipping/limiting. That'll sort you write out! Considering you'll probability want a VCA after is anyway.
Or try patching up some feedback around the output back into the mixer with the input audio to feed the input with a input source and feedback. That's good fun.
DivKidVideo Well I suppose that'd maybe help. Now that I think about it though, it'd probably take less space to just get a korgasmatron (or probably a morgasmatron) or a micro hadron plus a small mixer and a mult. If only Sherman would just release a dual filter for Euro already....
Different approaches and filter cores to them all. So a different sound to think about between them all too.
Yeah but I definitely do love the sound of those ones. Speaking of which, do you ever plan to do a video on the Micro Hadron or the Korgasmatron? I've seen enough demos to know they're awesome, but nothing as thorough as your videos are.
I don't know what the hell I was smoking 8 months ago when I originally made this comment. This sounds amazing to me even if it's no MS-20
