Make Noise QPAS // Quad Peak Animation System & Stereo Eurorack Filter
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 авг 2024
- *TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS BELOW* So here's "the ultimate guide to QPAS" ... a mega tutorial, uber overview or any other silly name you'd like to title this with. Silliness aside, the QPAS has been great offering a lot of stereo filter tones with the quad filter cores and simple controls for a wide range of animation. The tone of the filter is hard to pin down as Tony of Make Noise designed the core (rather than cloning an old one) for the filter and the option to saturate the input VCA stage provides further tonal options. I hope this video is useful for currently QPAS owners, potential QPAS owners but more importantly I hope the video serves to demonstrate techniques and provide ideas for any modules you own. I always try to make these useful for those with or without the module. As always, leave a comment and let's chat. Get stuck in! :)

Those 42 minutes and some odd seconds sure went by fast! Nice to revisit this one. ❤
thank for revisiting. Nice to know it's something to come back to, hopefully giving some new things to try along the way.
You can make it self-oscillate by patching the left LP into the right input and the right BP into the left input. It's great.
nice tip! Thanks for that.
Had this for 2 months and it is my absolute perfect filter. Worth every penny ❤️
I keep watching this and keep getting more and more information on how to use it. Incredible!!! 👍🏻
my qpas came today and you as usual nailed the review, pushed me over the edge to becoming a member on your patreon, thanks for all the shared knowledge dude, I feel like I know so much more than last year and it's a huge part down to people like your good self who share. Take care : )
thanks for the additional support Richard that's really good of you. Thank you.
Finally a serious video about this promising filter. I was thinking getting one, but I was holding back until I watched your super mega humangus tutorial !!!
Thank you Ben for supporting this community and taking the time to do it the way you do it!!!!
Thank you, really appreciate the comment and support. Happy to be of service.
Fantastic video for a fantastic module! There's so much to explore with this one.
thank you.
uuuuuuuuuuuuuu... man, you do so much great stuff... i already was looking into buying the QPAS... now its more than definete... this one is really one of a thousand filters that make the difference :-) thanx for this long shot :-)
anyway, do you own a pro2? think i saw one of your videos... using the four asignable cv outs to control this darling live with the pro2 is what iam looking for :-)
INSANELY useful very in-depth review. Thanks a lot!
Thanks for using my Morphagene reel again and for the shout out. I made that during one of the rare days where things are slow at the shop. I think you’ve finally convinced me to download it and use it on my Morphagene at home!
haha you should use the reel yourself it's great! I imagine very few days at the MN shop are slow.
@@DivKid such a good reel. Link?

What a treat it is to have awesome demos by DivKid and Mylar to listen to, while there is a QPAS in the mail with my name on the sticker
Just bought MI Beads and the Qpass will follow soon. I think that these modules will open up my sound big time.
Man, that pinged AM sound is HUGEEE 🔥
yeah it's really nice!
That feedback patch delay trickery was absolutely beautiful. Good on ya man.
Yeah that's a nice patch.
So deep and emotive
At 11:55 When you're upping the Q it sounds so good... a slow ramp wave would be fantastic for modulating in this instance. Great tutorial!
absolutely, these patches can definitely all be pushed further.
Thanks DivKid. Half of my Modules are because of You.
Hopefully wise purchases after the demos.
I'm only 10 minutes in, and I've heard more gorgeous sounds than I can count! Mine's arriving in the mail today, so this release was perfectly timed for my needs. Thanks for taking the time to make a great demo video. :)
stop this hype train. it is not worth
Nice one Chanse, glad to provide some nice tones and some patch ideas etc.
Hi Boris, there's no hype train. Just a demo, here's how it sounds, here's some patch ideas. Take it or leave it. Free to do as you wish with the demo.
@@DivKid yeah, i understand your point perfectly. i am just referring to my general observations (at forums and comments) what is going on about that module. just as if it is a revolution to the eurorack world.
I even felt like after two and a half second watching I need this filter :-D great sounds, thanks Ben!
Never big on filters, have gone through many, but my QPAS just arrived and it totally rocks! Unlike any other filter module in my experience. I will be holding on to this one! Thanks again Ben for another indispensable demo!
How do you build synth voices without a filter?
@@reecedeyoung6595 I don't
after 2 years of owning QPAS i realise it can be used as a 24db/oct too by self patching. Poor me, thanks Ben!
a bit of self patching is usually a good time (even if a noisy one) but yeah chaining filters for a steeper response is a nice patch. Hope others that don't know that see your comment and learn that too. Thanks!
Great demo! Loved the Morphagene reels and 'Weird Acid' patch.
nice one Sean, thanks.
The DivKid drinking game:

speaker-melting feedback patch
hahahahaha lots of that made me laugh. Love it! :)
@@DivKid that's basically the divkid script!!
Damn u... I’m watching this before work.. now I’m wasted 15 mins in or so

+1
lmao im saving this
Damn striking the VCA first reminded me of John Carpenters The Thing Soundtrack. Completely amazing. My QPAS is arriving Friday!!
oh cool
Cool demo. Seems to me that you can have a rack full of modules yet spend a lifetime exploring only one. Good way to spend your life :D
Always amazing demos merci beaucoup
Around 12:01 was amazing! Such a cool filter, gotta get one
finally got thru this tutorial ... gorgeous
mega tutorial + mega module filte r= best div kid video!
nice, thanks.
Anyone else wander in baked to listen to this? 🤤😛 Great panel and demo! This is too fun! Send one to OTT and Simon Posford, MAKE NOISE!

in case you needed it ;)
wonderful video as always!
Amazing filter! 😦🤤❤️ Thank you for the video!
cheers
Thank you. Getting mine tomorrow. Good to have this video.
great, cheers Mike.
DivKidVideo While you posted this QPAS arrived. And.. Mutes!! :-)
That thing sounds sooooo good!
yep
Excellent video Ben!
Noise into the wildcard inputs! Wow.
Thank you for this bbbiiiiiiigggg tutorial ... great stuff ...
Cool! Thanks for the demo! Mine just arrived today! :D
ah cool enjoy it.
Waow! thanks for the video. amazing stereo filter!
cheers!
Fantastic demo, thank you! Waiting for one to hit the shelves in Finland. My system doesn't even have a filter at the moment so this is perfect.
Pekka Pulli When it comes you’ll have good reason to say everyone’s favorite Finnish word: juoksentelisinkohan
jozeph gee Not exactly! Just "juoksisinkohan", which removes the part where the running would be aimless.
off to google translate I go ... :) ... enjoy the filter.
DivKidVideo It's "I wonder if I should run around aimlessly"
@@pekkapulli Well I know that my patching always has a little bit of aimlessleness in it. Maybe the part to remove would be the "I wonder," because there's no wondering at all. Running around aimlessly with this filter is DOPE.
Can't wait to have mine ! Nice video as always sir ;-)
thank you
Love The Sound Of This Rkid
nice one
Awesome Demo! My Duthieness loves that Doom Soundtrack Techno! Thanks again
Yeah that's a fun patch.
31:53 just unbelievable beautiful.
Great video
Patiently waiting for mines one, but I'm not a sexy modular superstar like Ben Ben so I have to wait, with my head bowed, with all the other synth peasants. Dressed in rags, begging for used earbuds to DIY patch cables from.
I'm supposed to be cooking dinner, but I guess we'll be having leftovers tonight, because I'm watching this joint😁 As always, thanks for the video. You rule. Sounds sooo good. Tickles my brainhole.
"synth peasants" haha. "Begging for used earbuds" made me laugh too. Cheers!
Dude. I'm going to do some amazing stuff with QPAS when it arrives. I can feel it. Exciting!@@DivKid
Wow you are so good at explaining. I wish you had a video for Tempi from Make Noise too. I have that module and I couldnt really understand it.
I eventually sold my Tempi because I just couldn't wrap my head around it. Bought 4MS RCD in its place, I like it. Still think about the Tempi and what could have been....
@@l1fef0rm you’re missing nothing. I understood it but it was impossible to remember all the stupid button combinations for it to be usable. It was a terrible user interface design. I sold mine and got a Pams new workout, with an excellent user interface.
When the first minute of every DivKid video makes me want to buy a new module
Yeah that'll be the previews!
Every damn time!
Can’t wait til you test their new delay!
You make great videos. End of line.
Brilliant demos, every time... if I was to offer a small, humble piece of feedback.. I often find myself wishing the camera angle was ever so slightly wider, so we get to see the whole patch, or at least the important bits. There's always several bits in each vid where I am asking myself what's he feeding that with? or what else is in the chain.. I know you make an effort to talk us through it as you go, it's appreciated, anyway, just my small 2p.... thanks again.
sold!
My local vendor had one on their b-stock page yesterday, about 25% off retail... Happy new year to me!
good saving and hopefully still like new!
@@DivKid Oh, this vendor is 100% legit! About 70% of my rack is from them, and their b-stock modules are always mint... I have a b-stock Z-DSP coming in a few weeks - they're holding it for me...
Thanks for this
@ 15:00 sold
Will we be getting a video on the SSF Dipole too? I'm very conflicted between it and QPAS for obvious reasons
I'm not a big MN fan but it's a really interesting concept. Theoretically you could do a lot of the same things with 2 separate filter modules, but there's the design and cost issues of setting them up, gain unity (if that's what you want), etc. I imagine we'll see more of this. It's fascinating how much design really affects how you use something, in the various dual filters I owned I almost never used it like this, just wasn't explicitly set up the same way to inspire that type of interaction. It's amazing if you go back and look at module videos from 5 years ago or so and the sort of things people did 5-10 minute demos on. So dramatically different.
its a stereo quad filter not a dual filter. so u'd need 8 filters to emulate its functionality
@@nutritionalyeast7978 Good point, although, unless I'm missing something, separate frequency controls and multiple separate cv per side, etc. make even a good dual filter like the AJH Gemini able to do some things this one can't do.
yeah theres no way to separately offset the frequency or resonance of the two sides, so using it as a dual filter (ie radiate controls both at minimum so each side is just a 12db filter) wouldnt work as well as a normal dual filter.
it's a quad filter in stereo. So it's 4, not 8. Gemini would get fairly close. The routing section on the middle of that can get similar results in terms of some of the controls offset but you'd need 2 Geminis and a few clever tricks to get closer. Of course layer series/parallel filters is interesting and should be explored :)
@@DivKid i meant you'd need eight mono filters to replicate the quad core stereo. unless i misunderstood and its actually four filters spread across a stereo image?
Hi mate, I saw your review a lot and to be honest I love it. Got the QPAS and I was wondering when you say that you put the pitch sequencer fo the filter frequency. Do you mean a pitch (CV) coming from a sequencer ? Then you put the gate and accent from the same or other sequencer from the same sequencer ? If so this is brillant and need to try. Thank you for your time :-)
I'm thinking of getting this to use with my grandmother in mono, but want to be able to patch in my prophet rev2 outputs as well, with maths to help modulate the qpas. Would the intellij audio interface be a good choice to route the stereo signal from prophet into qpass and then back out of the qpas to intellij output into my console to daw? Do you think it would sound good with the rev2 stereo input?
Sold
enjoy it
Another question (sorry), what do you inject into the FREQ1 at 28:08 ? Sorry my english isn't perfect but I found the sound out of this world !!
Great video! Got me wondering - can DATA do 2 or 4 FFTs simultaneously? If it did you could replace the overlay
it can't and it's not as responsive as the EQ analysers and meters in logic for example. Interesting idea though.
What delay are you using for the feedback loop at 10:43? Is a stereo delay, and, if so, are you sending one side, e.g., left, back into the path, and the other to the output? Thanks!!!
Nothing like sitting here, seriously considering this purchase, listening out of phone speakers 😂
hi div..nice and amazing demos...i'v Ques. ,i'm looking for Quad filter and i'm between Steady State Fate Stereo Dipole, OR Make Noise QPAS ?? do u prefer mono or stereo filters ?! any other options ?? Tnx...
would i miss my cwejman res 4 if is sold it to get one of these?
What would you recommend more the QPAS or the Belgrad? I create experimental noise, industrial, underground techno kind of stuff.
latter
0:46 ohhh 💣
I
What delay were you using QPAS in the path of?
EuroDDL
Damn! Some Tasty Patches goin on there.. I'm only 2 mins in!
That's the previews for you!
haha yea i guess that sums up the video. :) I'm only getting to watch this through properly now, maan that module sounds just Fantastic! Great rundown as always too Ben.
I noticed the Endorphin.es Cable holder Panel to the right of QPAS, how do you find it in use? I was just about to make exactly the same thing up thinking "this has never been done before" when i saw them announce them on Instagram. :/ Always kinda wondered weather people would have actually been interested in the idea, or if would have been marketable at all. I made a desktop standing cable holder which i think might be better suited to most peoples needs, i'm going to start selling them soon.
EDIT: I see you're actually using the Cable holder Panel to hold your 'Ready to Patch' Connections. That's a use case i hadn't thought of, which works really well for your demo purposes or for Live use too i guess. Good stuff!
@31minute: is this a sort of Low Pass Gate?
Make noise QPAS or Intellijel MORGASMATRON, what do u think?
Making this harder for you (I know you want a simple answer that makes it easier) ... throw the SSF Stereo Dipole into your considerations too.
don't have a MORGASMATRON to try out but the Stereo Dipole and QPAS I enjoy.
Does anyone know of a stereo filter module which gives you control over the pan position of each filter pole?
never seen that, but what is it you're trying to achieve? To be able to pan say a 1 pole low pass left and a 2 pole right? So the filter slopes are different on each side of the stereo field?
@@DivKid I am trying to get dynamic panning of each peak. Most likely several bandpasses. By dynamic I mean specifically having each pole being modulated by an lfo so that they are moving gently around the stereo field. Not necessarily to the extremes of hard left and hard right. I picture this creating a very psychedelic, stereo formant/vowel result. The source signal being filtered would be a slow pitched saw wave bending ever so slightly in pitch with a similar speed lfo to which the filter poles are moving.
Maybe I will build this scenario in Bitwig and make a short video to link here to give you a better idea of what I'm describing.
Thanks for your reply Divkid! Love your work :)
Here is a video I whipped up to give you an idea - ruclips.net/video/yEPWZSV8LW0/видео.html
What are those lifted, finger- tight rack screws called?
Probably befaco knurlies
Befaco Knurlies at Pat said below. Absolutely love 'em. Well worth the cost (yes they're a lot more than normal screws).
Can it be that the knobs wobble quite a bit?
pots can wobble on a few companies modules yeah. It's fine, just not panel mounted pots is all.
14:12 holly fucking shit.... that was a fucking awesome sound
oh yeah that was a fun one!
0:30
ironically, when he says "listen to the low end" the following sounds was a lot like van morrison's vocalizing on listen to the lion..... coincidence? i think not
15:21 *A wild Butterfree appears!*
butterfree? butterfly?
@@DivKid Sounds just like some of the original Pokemon growls on the Gameboy! ^~^
It ain't good unless Div does an indepth video on it. I can't say how many times one of your vids has been a critical influence on module purchases.
wow thanks, nice one!
oh god no the mouth sounds killlled me
and the delay feedback revived you?
Voyager had the worst sounding filter I had ever heard, Qpas is the best sounding filter I have heard. Bob should have had Tony design the voyager filter.
I can't remember the timeline to know if Tony was with Moog during the Voyagers development, could have been. But yeah the QPAS is great! Long time since I (it was brief then anyway) touched a Voyager.
9:26 DJANGO
django?
@@DivKid That crazy formant tone sounded like the word django, or something... am I crazy?
shite that sounds fantastic.. but where can i spare 18hp???
another case? ... runs and hides!
That's not 2hp...!
and?
@@DivKid who's a salty tiger?!! 2hp tuesdays.... smh
AHHHHHH it's Wednesday here. Not a salty tiger just thinking, is it too big? Should I cover more 2hp ... brain dump moment :D . Also never heard "salty tiger" before I like it!
How could you? Lol
how could I what?
Gas warning: when buying a new module (and you will) just remember - with that module you don’t get DivKids talent 🫡.. just a reminder
But often you do get a lot of patch ideas in video form you can copy, try out and hopefully learn something from or find something cool for your own sounds ... that's the goal anyway.
Thanks!
