Hey Mylar, Doc Sketchy here, designer of Korgasmatron and Dr. Octature. Another excellent demo! However, I notice that your Doc Oc is oscillating when the Q pot is about halfway. There is a trimmer on the board which allows you to place the point of self-oscillation more or less wherever you want on the Q pot. It's called QTRIM. So, just put the Q knob where you want self-oscillation to start (I prefer about 3:00), and then adjust the QTRIM trimmer until it just starts to self-oscillate. Voila!
+docsketchy Thanks Doc - that is a very good shout, I didn't know about that!
is the design based on the korg35 of the later version? it sounds like korg35 to me but I could be wrong
The A-103 was my favorite of this shootout. Awesome video, I love module shootout videos like this so much because it gives you a great comparison in a controlled environment.
Thanks for cranking up the knobs :-) I also much appreciate that you don't use annoying sequences, like many others do, to demo the sound.
I love my ms 20 but I really love the expansion options or a modular synth. I'm that guy that takes 30 mins to make a character in a video game
And then after 30 minutes, you start a new game again? Happens to me way too much XD
The best eurorack demos on RUclips. Was looking for a decent demo of the octature for a while, until this came along and first time showed the pure filtering it can make. Thank you Mylar
+Robubobu Why thank you x
Great stuff Mylar!!! I realize there is only so much time you have with each video, but the Harvestman Polivoks Filter, Mannequins Three Sisters and Manhattan Analog Discrete SVVCF filters are some of my personal favs. SO much great stuff out there right now. Keep up the FANTASTIC work!!!
As a beginner and in the process to build my first Eurorack. This helped me lots in the way to decide what kind of filter/filters I could add. I am a huge fan of the MS-20 but had no idea what filter to get and most of all what filter that sounds most accurate. Thank you very much for both explaining and showing the differences between the filters you have in your Eurorack!
Thumbs up!
Thanks - check out the Manhattan Analog MA35 which is an MS10 filter clone but gives you the VCA too, not tried it but meant to be very authentic
+mylarmelodies Thank you. I will check it out :)
Excellent demo of filters! I can really tell which one I need.
love this video .... again !! thanks Mylar
I want an MS-20 and now they are quite affordable plus you can patch them to modular gear too!
Your "american - southern" accent at 5:40 "from the sublime to the ridiculous" is hilarious. You could do some amazing voice acting, cause your delivery and regular accent/voice is also Ace!!!!
When I started in synthesis, I just thought that the components were simple, but when put together, make something beautiful.
But in the past few months, I've realized: if I want a modular, there is no such thing as a 'basic' lpf or 'basic' oscillator! Everything has its own flavor, which, in turn, create a beautiful dish of a synthesizer!
Doepfer A106-5 SEM with full level and resonance, makes my toes curl!! ❤
Nice selection of sweeps, very helpful
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Has given me some direction that I needed!
Ha, Prophei... friend of mine. We use to work together years ago at M-Audio. Love your videos by the way; my favorite is the Intellijel Metropolis video you did... and this one of course, excellent!
+Genshi Media Group No wonder your mother-23 demos are so good ;)
Dude,
Great video.
You never see this type of explanation side-by-side .
Bravo thanks 👍😎
Alex could talk about anything and you would be fascinated. Zen gardening, contemporary art, bread baking, Norwegian politics, Forgotten card games, lost kittens, sappy novels and yellow earplugs.
excelent demo, thanks!
The Doepfer VCO is great if you want that old tone. Cheap and has vibe. Choose wisely with the VCF, a mixer that can drive and vintage type VCA and you can get some great classic sounds. Your right in mentioning not to over look Doepfer.
Great work Alex! :)
Awesome video, I've been trying to decide between a.com and or euro rack set up. Love the thoroughness of your video if you offered a class on analog synthesizers I would take it! Cheers!
P.S. DivKid is my next patron guy thanks 2 you both ! No Divmas for me but much love!
Great video as always - you couldn't wrestle the Korgasmatron II and Dr. Octature II from my cold dead hands.
25:15 Regarding recap, hearing them all together I really like the Octature, SEM, & Post Lawsuit.. probably in that order.
"I'm gonna' buy this now. I'm gonna buy it..." Haha!
the doepfer a-106-6 xpander filter is also so much bang for the buck. probably one of my doepfer favs besides the wasp and 303 type. but all the doepfers are so cheap and sound so good.
Doepfer makes cool real analog stuff
oh hey! ahah love your videos!!! more please!!!
zz240 tiptop prophet 5 filter my fav by far a very clean organic sounding beast . cheap too ! and a vca
My goodness, this one must be one from a little back! your case has so many "opportunities" between your modules. I haven't seen it where it isn't jam packed full of little buddies !
The little buddies are spilling out onto the table now. I need to have a badger cull.
Like! Great comparison on some great classic synth filters. I suggest more of this: Polivoks-filter (from e.g. Ericasynth), ladder filter (Moog themselves put it in a Eurorack-format) etc.
Sir Synth what Moog Eurorack modules are there? I can’t think of any unless you’re referencing Mother 32’s Filter. I’d buy a Moog Ladder Filter eurorack module without hesitation.
Brilliant!
Another top-notch video Mylar. Or "Ace", as you'd put it. :)
I too wanted an MS20 but realized it was the filter I wanted and that I could buy one based on the MS20, and costumize the rest of the synth as I wanted. I guess you'd have to pay some 100 euros more for a complete eurorack synth, but still worth it, though. Depending on how you work and what you know about synths, I should add.
Jean Fatal which filter did you get to emulate ms20?
people need to listen to this on headphones, how many times did my eyes start to cross on the filter sweeps? I now have major GAS for filters and creating a list to buy next
what's that weird fish bone looking appendage on the right of the wasp filter?
Hey just a quick one what was that album? I didn't catch the name of it in the video?
i don't know about the *doepfer 106* (SEM). it sounded fairly standard in this video whereas the *bubblesound SEM20* sounded juicier and more rubbery in another video. it's really hard to compare between videos, but the 106 just didn't jump out as unique & exciting in this video like the 124 WASP does. it'd be interesting to see a same vs same clone shootout eg. all SEMs, WASPs, MS20s or polivoks etc. the WASP was the real standount here.
so far, the "best" filters i've heard, besides the aforementioned 124 WASP & bubblesound SEM20 are the intellijel polaris because it covers so much territory (wet, grungy, fat & vocal) and the synthesis technology E440 which sounds extra juicy (more like what i think of as an ARP2600 sound than the "meh" post lawsuit filter in this demo) and MAYBE the erica synths polivoks based on the "cheesy" (in a good way) sound of their complete polivoks synth clone, but i wonder if maybe polivoks & WASP filters are more alike than different.
A great test for my new in ear momentum by senheiser phones 😍😍😍😍😍
Love the Doc Ock, I got the v1 tho, is the v2 worth it?
Any mellower filters out there? Really looking to find one.
great it would be awesome to hear more sweeps. it would be cool to have a site full of sweeps using the same VCO at the same frequency.
nice one!
Prophei taught me through the first couple years of eurorack
Thank you for this wonderful video. Would the Behringer ARP 2600 be able to get that same sound as Post-Lawsuit LPF?
when i eventually build a modular ... there will be a SEM filter ...
Anders Panders soon there will be a Euro SEM by Oberheim himself :o
check the bubblesound SEM20 out. another demo for that i watched made it sound way more juicy & rubbery than the "meh" 106 version in this video. from the demos i've seen so far, a lot of "classic filters" or at least their clones are overrated, but the bubblesound has some personality. maybe a different SEM clone is even better.
Wasp and SEM
Great vid, I particularly enjoy the manic laughter when you hit a great tone. I have the wasp and love it but are there any other really unique filters I could also look at?
Thanks - yeah there's loads - check out the Harvestman Polivoks filter, and the Ericasynths versions - and try the Doepfer xtreme filter, and maybe the Ieaskul F. Mobenthey Sprott. Divkid Ben is big into the Gods Box SEM clone too. What flavour do you fancy, really?!
I love them all especially the...actually just all of them! No Moog clone?
Mylar what are your thoughts on the new Morgasmatron and Bifold from Intellijel? Are they still ace? I am loving the Quadrax and expander.
them doepfer filters are ace
Ok whats your fav. SEM filter? as a patron I ask ? several months now so not a gold member but its time I ask an opinion ?
Have you tried a manhattan SVVCF ? I’d love to hear your thought on it. Seems to be an uncontained squelchy beast and was wondering how unique that is?
Hi Mylar, have you ever got a chance to compare the Korgasmatron to the Dual Borg in filter mode? In terms of functions I know they are a lot different, but I was wondering if they were any similar in terms of tone... The Borg seems a little less clean though.
+vinnowater Not tried the dual Borg, but used to have (and loved) the Borg 2. They're different, Borg more smooth/'woody' for want of a better word, Korga more aceed, I'd say. Get both? :3
Hey thanks so much for your videos! I've been messing around with monosynths for about two years now and that video you made of the Metropolis really got me excited about jumping into modular. I just love the idea of infinite soundscaping potential. Would you mind telling me what VCO you used in this video? Are there any VCOs you'd recommend for someone who's just getting started?
I used the standard Doepfer A110 VCO! Wanted to make a point of using a 'non-wacky' VCO...they ALL sound great.
Filters are magic
17:40 straight up gear porn :) this was great!
What is that 1hp patch cable organiser? Seems genius
"Ouchie!"
1:45 his voice goes full Kermit for a second there
Mad props for mentioning John Carpenter👌👍 my favorite director of all-time! the score he did for "BIG trouble little China" and "Prince of Darkness" is the shit!🎹🎧💫💀😵👌👍
1:22 was absolutely beautiful could you explain that patch please ?
VCO > Filter! But a nice Filter.
great video and overview. I heard the epoch modular twin peak recently and really love what it can do..have you come across one? All the best
Not but I did try the WMD Aperture...damn that thing sounds amazing
Yeah checked it out its a really nice filter, its on the must have list, have you come across the 3 Sisters by Mannequin? Think that is a really cool filter too. I like the idea of these kinds of filters as they allow more sculpting of the sound. Without modulation a lot filters can be a bit more like tone controls unless we get creative with them. I have the Doepfer SEM 106-5, which is really nice with its 2 outputs, a bargain for the price. Take it easy Mylar.
Best part of video 'screw that'
the MEANEST synth, hands down, has to be the the metasonix ALL TUBE S-1000 wretch machine. NOTHING sounds like that
When you say 'tuned' at 3:06 it sounds just like a cartoon race car driving past.
Do you have the Doepfer VCO patched into something else before going into the filters? Totally new to modular (and pretty new to synthesis in general!)
Absolute loving your videos - clear, informative, entertaining and inspiring. Thanks!
*EDIT* I bloody LOVE that Wasp!
No that was straight into them! Thanks mate
That's awesome! I only ask because at 11:54 I noticed the grey patch cable coming from the saw output of the A-110 and a red cable into the filter, so I wondered where the cables were going to/coming from inbetween?
what vca you are using?
+PIS records An old Intellijel HexVCA!
'damn, that's it!'
So.... are all (or most) filters modeled after prior art ? (old synths) ??
What filters are "new", using modern chips or modern transistors ?
I realize there is a desire to clone classic synths.....but.....
The Threeler ?......Sisters ?
The behringer Neutron has a new filter Design and sounds really cool as hell
the wasp is so aptly named. sounds like a swarm of the little bastards at times :)
i want 2 :)
5:30 sounds like the filter on the volca keys
4:43 5:04 holy moments
Send in the clones, there has to be clones. :)
After 4:00 you can see the bass shaking the camera, I believe.
Dr Oct for the win....but budget-friendly sem will do nicely.
Prophei?
Lovely video, but could someone tell me who at STG decided it would be a good idea to waste about 4 hp on ONE JACK????? Just put it on the left with all the rest for the gods' sakes!!
+Chartre Khan The whole hardware design of the STG is odd : there is this huge PCB reaching more than 10cm deep. But this filter sounds just great and brings a really thick low end.
Maybe since he does MU/5U format stuff the 3U modules feel really small to him? I like the proportions but alas case real estate is at a premium.
I was laughing along with you, that wasp is FILTHY!
R2D2 right at 10:38
that unusual?
I have one filter module - the monotron
The one I can afford :V
post lawsuit lpf?
what the fuck
get Kshmr or madeon or oliver or avicii
+jimmy Garcia Yeah, why?
why jimmy?
+jimmy Garcia They've had Avicii
why ???
...You fried your A-109, didn't you?
+Sean Hornibrook Ha no, I sold it - it was good though, CEM3379 chip, pretty classic sounding. Not actually managed to fry a module yet..._yet_.
American accent: DOPE-fer. British accent: DERP-fer.
:-)
speak to my hand
I've been in Euro a year. Got a Wasp as my first and only filter for a while because of your other demo. I seem to be becoming a filter junkie. This video isn't helping.
Future Music... If u interview zedd I will give you 20,000 dolars
people saying how amazing analog is.....constant buzz sound under all audio.,.....cool bro
