  • I show how to tear down, clean, lubricate and rebuild Suntour XCM (SF11-XCM-V3) forks/shocks. Periodic maintenance will help prolong the life of the fork and maintain performance. Basic service to keep your suspension working and from becoming stiff or frozen. I bought this fork on craigslist for $20. The XCM fork models have varied over the years. This fork is a SF11-XCM-V3-DS-PM-26-120.
There are different versions of XCM forks. This is an SF11. If yours has a lockout, you have a different version. You might check out my video overhauling an XCR fork that has a lockout:

    Suntour XCT Fork Service:
    • Suntour XCT Fork Servi...
    * Use grease made for forks. I use Slickoleum which is also sold under the name Slick Honey. You can also use SRAM Butter or Judy Butter. If the fork uses oil, use the proper fork oil. Use of a grease/oil not made specifically for forks can damage the plastic/polyurethane parts, or otherwise leave the fork not working properly.

Now that's a useful video! Servicing an entry level fork at home. Most people pay for the service almost as much as getting a used fork, why not doing it yourself. It would be awesome if you could do the same with RockShox Dart 3 fork. I think Dart lineup is about the same for servicing but that's just a wild estimation.

Is there even a reason to service forks like these? I mean I can see no benifit to doing so. There are no seals that can leak or real performance increase afterwards. Perhaps all reason I can think is if a part is badly worn out or damaged

Nice video and very helpful for your newbie home mechanic fans. Since suntour is the first choice for almost all the bike manufacturer's entry level segment, chances are xct, xcm, xcr forks are their one and only way to go. almost all of their super cheap to mid level hardtails got these models and sometimes rockshox xc 28, xc 30 coil varients can be seen. Again thanks for your tutorial. Watching this before disassembly, is really assuring for anyone. Want this type of tutorials even more.

Just pulled an old Scott YZ15 out of the garage and need to do the brakes. Fork has oil on the outside so wasn’t sure if the seals had gone. This was the first vid when I typed xcm fork strip into the search. Nice to see they are about as advanced as my 1966 Triumph Tiger Cub forks.😅 At least I now know it’s not oil leaking out of the forks.
I’ll have a mooch and see if you’ve done a brake service on Shimano BLM hydraulic system.
I’ve liked this vid and subscribed, as you seem to have struck a happy balance between explanation and showing the process. Not so complicated you’d frighten a newcomer, and not so simple that someone with some mechanical knowledge is left wanting. Nice job!

Mine has 9 months in service now and started working incorrrectly, with its back travel getting slower like an airlplane landing gear shock. Again, bike forks should be capable of fast feedback, given the low mass of the cyclist + bike system. Dampers, especially viscous-type, like the hydraulic cartridges are intended to slow down the return travel on large mass systems to prevent them from bouncing for too long. That's taught on the basiscs of the mechanical engineering course, on vibration, and this is why car suspensions have a coil + fluid damper system. Back to my XCM 30, after these 9 months, it started to rub, making it sluggish on its back travel. When I opened it, I found the reason: The plastic caps at the end of the coil spings were too tight to the internal wall so as soon as they got some dirty and the ends of the coils got a bit rusty, they started to hold it back at the begining of the back travel, due the increased friction. After some finish sanding, it now works correctly, being promptly ready for the next obstacle as soon as it gets off the 1st. High frequency shock absorving function is back to mine now. I dare to say that under certain circumstances it works better than my Rockshox Judy from my 2nd bike, which is a fair comparison as it's also a coil spring fork. Althouh both are obviously not comparable to an air susp, Suntour has the advantages of being cheap and easy to maintain at home. The big problem I noticed is the rust on the chromed legs before 1 year in service, as these are parts that aren't worth to replace, epseciallly from the complexity and safety standpoints.

I tried this on Suntour XCM (but V3.0 with lockout) and it's a bit different inside - the sticks with 10mm on the bottom won't come out and are different type. But overall this video was very helpful and got the job done in less than 2 hours for me.

@@aethelfreda just pull it up and it comes right off, no special tools needed.
