- Time to service my SR Suntour XCR 32 Coil, 100mm travel front suspension fork. I've had this fork for almost two years now. After cleaning and lubing all the components it is back to working smooth!

got them working again thanks to this cheers mate.
Awesome!
Great video. I just ordered a rebuild kit for my XCMs. I haven't ridden it much since the Hurricane Harvey flood, and I thought the fork seemed a bit sluggish. Opened the fork and flood water poured out. I cant believe it wasn't rusted shut, and there was no damage or pitting. I used your video to help me rebuild it! So thats what real suspension feels like!! Thanks.
Glad it helped and thanks for the feedback. It really means a lot 👍
The lock-out mechanism you refer to is actually the damper. I'm guessing it's an oil filled damper and the lockout mechanism closes the valve, which stops the damper from moving.
This will explain why some people are saying that they have oil in the tube when they take it apart. If the damper is worn the forks will tend to bounce.
My forks have lost their dampening. So it looks like I need a new dampening piston/lockout.
Thanks for the video. Having seen the components it has helped me diagnose my problem.
yes it is, the lock out mechanism works by locking the dampener which is supposed to be a sealed cartridge and can be bought separately. It is not serviceable other than the ability to adjust the lockout when not working as shown in the video.
There is a life hack with XCT/XCM/XCR fork when you cut off a part of elastomer inside the spring. Well you should measure it with how much free space is available between elastomer and spring. and cut off elastomer until it would be identical with you travel.
I have XCM and from stock it didnt work at all 100mm of travel. I just cut off this elastomer and it work. I am riding with this modification since 2017 and it works perfectly
The elastomer is there on coil models to provide progression towards the end of fork travel. It prevents you from blowing through travel on big hits. I've also cut mine but always make sure to leave it longer than the fork travel if you want to retain a progressive spring curve.
What is elastometer? Can you help me?
@@richardnaba8952 it's the long black thing inside the spring
Is that why my form won't move?
Seen the Axum at Walmart today and I was impressed it was lightweight and the fork was way better than any of the other bike at Walmart wouldn’t be surprised
If it was the same fork
The Walmart stores near me do not have any Axums and according to the site even ordering to the store will take 2 weeks. I almost pulled the trigger on ordering one.
im thinking of ordering one to get my dad into riding trails but there’s coming out with a dropper post edition so im gonna wait and see how much that one is
Out of curiosity, how old is your dad? I turn 52 next month.
Tony's Hobbies He’ll be turning 60 in a couple months. He rides road/gravel/ paved trails now and wants to go out on the trails with me but don’t have the bike for it.
DylanAkaDylan he’s going love MTB’ing. If he rides that much you might want to think about a nice used full suspension. He’s going to be hooked and want one sooner or later!
Thanks Tony, got some SRAM butter and botched an oil foam ring out of a spare sponge and they feel better than ever.
About the foam rings, I’m already 1 year riding with foam rings on my coil XCR32.
Helps a little bit with reducing friction, but a well lubed lockout shaft is also important. It the lockout shaft has resistance/friction going in, you’re losing all benefits of foam rings.
Sweet, thanks for the info!
good vid thanks, needed to confirm which way the bottom plastic guide on spring side went
Glad it helped
Very specific tutorial... very nice video
Thank you
Thanks for Share Tony, salam gowes From Indonesia
I added some foam rings to my air version of the XCR 32, and the difference is night and day: ruclips.net/video/BxSWEHqFu2g/видео.html
I have a set of suntor XCR32 Coil Forks and have had them for 2 years,
They have been good and I need to service the lowers to remove grime and re lube. I serviced my friends XCM forks and they were fine. However, when I tried to service my forks, the nut on the bottom just keeps spinning meaning I cannot remove the lowers. I have tried everything like giving them a hit with a mallet but nothing works,
Please help
From fin
not sure if this will help but try to turn it while someone is compressing the fork or maybe try with the fork in the locked position
@@TonyHob ok thanks I’ll try tomorrow
@@TonyHob hello, I had to wedge a long screwdriver down from the top of the suspension to stop the bottom part spinning
Soo interesting Mann🙏..im from Indonesian 🙏
When you put the fork back, I guess you unlocked it, right? Else, it will not be compressed and you will not be able to tight the nut at the bottom..
It doesn’t really matter since the lowers move independently of the internals until it is tightened
Great expanation friend
Got a pair of these and recently I think there is a rattling noise coming from them whenever I go over a bump. Is it possible things can get loose inside?
Absolutely, Berm Peak has a video on these that explains a few things. Namely why it has a sticker that warns against doing jumps or aggressive riding. In his opinion they put that on because these forks are normally put on cheaper « big surface » store bikes and those get assembled shoddily by inexperienced/uninterested workers. They are supposedly safe once you tighten everything up. Hope that helps !
How can increase fork travel with that. Kindly also do some tutorial on how to do it. Thank you
Why do my se sr suntour xcr32 have preload and rebound i dont have a air inlet
when i pump my fork there is a knocking sound how can i fix this sir? and what is the cause?of knocking sound
The only way to know is to take it apart and look for worn parts. Make sure everything is tight
thanks
I hace the same fork but remote lockout, can I increase the travel in this fork? Actually has 120mm
Does removing the little black plastic above the small spring might increase the travel? Ive increased mine from stock 120 to 150 but Im using a spacer and a long bolt.
It might but I wouldn’t risk it
@@TonyHob Trust me it works but it's your choice :)
How did u increase the travel in yours???
Great video mate 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Mine is pretty hard to compress cause im a light weight its brand new should i get a different spring for it ?
Yes go for a softer spring and if you remove the lockout cap there is a little plastic circular head (it grips on to the lockout lever) drop a 4mm Allen key in there and turn it clockwise untill it stops. You wont have any lockout but your forks will feel as plush as can be 🤘
@@kennysanti6557 thanks
How did it go?
@@kennysanti6557 great i dont even need a new spring works better then air now thanks so much
What weight is the standard spring for?
Hello sir this is better than the buckles
Correct ? But I see they don’t have the tapered in stock can I put the stray tube on the Axum what is the difference? Thanks and you don’t have a fork that want to sell.? Thank you
You can put a straight tube one on with an adapter
I have been told that a foam ring in this fork would scratch the bars in time . Have you tried?
I have not tried it but the foam ring is supposed to be soaked in suspension oil and it that case it would not scratch the stanchions. The problem is that since this fork does not use oil the rings would eventually dry out and cause problems. So, yes, it's not a good idea to use them in this particular fork.
@@TonyHob yep. But also the suntour raidon who also has a seal suspension sistem (not open bath) , it comes with the foams rings. So I don't know what to think haha
Hmm, interesting 🤔
My lock out not working. Checking it the 5mm cannot be tighten? Is it damage or i need to take out everything?
There's a small one inside the 5mm
good video friend, hey what measure is the die you use to remove the spring from the preload?
Do you mean this 4:00 ?
When I was taking my xcr fork apart I noticed oil that came out. How come you didn’t put oil in your fork ?
There’s an oil and a coil version (I made another video on the oil version) If yours is the coil version it only uses grease. If oil came out from the coil version then it is most likely from the grease separating.
What do you mean by the grease separating? Like the grease becoming oil?
When grease sits for a while or gets hot the oil in it can separate. If you ever open a new tube of grease there is sometimes oil at the top.
Thank you for your help

I try to steer people in the right direction with those Suntour forks and I get with nothing but hate. But I've been in the game a long time. Both RockShox and Manitou of come down so much in price over the last couple years. An extra $100 for a fork can mean the difference between life and death. If your life is not worth $100 then by all means go with the suntour. I'm far from Richie Rich but this is a no-brainer.
I understand your concern and you have some valid points but I bought my first MTB in 1987. Not sure if you have been "in the game" longer than that. There is nothing wrong with these forks as long as you understand that these are meant for XC and intermediate trails. If you are doing bike parks and big jumps then you need to get the proper, better fork. A 100-120mm travel fork is not meant for that. I have a 150mm Fox 34 on my other bike that can handle much more abuse than the Suntour. Now, on my hardtail I have a 120mm Suntour XCR Air and it is more than enough for the trails that I ride on the hardtail. I'm 100% sure it will hold up fine in those trails and have actually been impressed with the performance. Close to the RockShox Silver TK Air I had on another bike. For rougher trails I'll use my FS with the Fox. You have to match your equipment to the type of riding you are doing while taking your budget in consideration.
same thing happened to me when i dropped it it has a bad feel to it
I found the same groove for a foam ring, that is why I was looking for a video and found yours. Did you try it and did it work?
I have not tried it. Since there is no oil in the lowers I was thinking it won’t do any good.
I habe been having some issues with my fork (Suntour XCR 32 with locking remote control on the handlebar)... It suddenly stopped locking, and I saw some black oil kind on the external tube (just like yours)... I've thought it could be the locking cartidge , but I've heard some sound like if something were hitting (internally) on my fork... Did yu hear something like that in yours?
No strange noises on mine, just a vibration. Suntour sells the cartridge if you need to replace it but try overhauling the fork and readjust the lock out like on the video first
@Oswaldo Castaneda
Did you find a way to get it back working?
@@francogalinacumar8196 I did, the locking cartidge was broken so I had to buy a new one (FUN-1507) and I bought the tool so I could replace it.
In fact, it is not so hard and in suntour web site there are a lot of tutorials of how to do it, just look on the serial number of your fork to see the model
@@oswaldocastaneda8340 thank you for such a fast reply! I Will try to do an overhaul first (i had the same symptons on my fork as you) and if that doesnt do the trick i guess that i will have to buy a new cartridge ; the downside is that the price of the shipping to Argentina is the same as the product itself :(
Greetings ! Have a nice weekend

Iv opened a old 2005 set of suntour forks sr.. no nothing of them and there is only one coil in one leg? Is that normal? Also one fork has a screw coming out the bottom amd one has it missing... i mean coming out the bottom of the actual forks facing down to the floor? Im not sure but I'm guessing parts are missing out of one side? Any advice welcome?
Could be missing parts but what model is it? If it is not meant to have rebound control then it would not have a cartridge in the right leg.
Sir
I have a 1999 xcr. May i know where to buy the lock out cartridge? I am using 26”
Thank u :)))
Don’t know where you can find a new one
What do I do if the teeths on my cap got shredded off? I can't open it please help😭😭😭
If the fork is working well I would leave it alone. If you really need to open it you might need to take some channel lock pliers to it and replace the cap. I believe you can buy one from Suntour
From your perspective what is your choice in terms of (light trails and drop) coil or air xcr fork? What would you recommend
I would go with the air, it’s easier to tune to your weight and riding style
@@TonyHob if in air type so xcr air or epixon air or raidon air? I would use only 120mm travel
A lot of the lower end bigboxbikes use a company called Zoom to manufacture their lowering Forks so I'm pretty sure that the forks that are on most of the new skin mountain bikes will be Zoom manufactured suspension forks if there a higher spec level Walmart bike or even at Dick's Sporting Goods bike or where I live in Canada a Canadian Tire Bike usually they'll have Suntour Forks I have a Canadian Tire CCM and it had a pair of entry-level Suntour Forks but they said Son to a raid on them
Kris Payne good point. The Axum might use a higher end Zoom. I made a video where I take the Zoom fork from my Schwinn Taff apart and it literally just had two springs inside.
Tony's Hobbies Oh what I noticed on these forks is that they look identical to SunTour, have a lockout on one side & a tension knob on the other side just like your forks in this video. Only thing missing on this design is a damper adjuster knob
I’m willing to let you have my Axum forks for a small fee. Let me know where to inbox you for further details. Thanx
@@ds1755 send email to tonyrantonio@netscape.net and we can try to work something out. I'm really curious as to the inner workings of the Schwinn's fork
Tony's Hobbies ok thanx.. Keep an eye out for peenut83.
Mine on the lockout side has fork oil
Same model? Is it working well? The XCR coil is supposed to be a sealed cartridge. If there’s oil the cartridge could be leaking.
@@TonyHob yes, I guess you are right, it must leak for lookout cartridge, preload side does not have oil when open. no wonder my lockout does not work.
did you try the fox 32 seal kit on this fork?
Did not, after thinking about it I don’t think it would be of any benefit since there is no oil bath to keep the seals oiled.
can this model change its travel? shortrer?
Not that I am aware of
Could I put some oil ino bottoms of the legs?
it really would not help anything
@@TonyHob as I thouht... thanks. This must be poor quality design damper in the blocking leg? I tell you below zero Celsius it stops. It's like a wooden peg literally.
if you can choose between the rockshox xc30 and the suntour xcr32 which one do you take?
I would go for the Rockshox. It has rebound control. At the price the 2019 XC30 is going for right now it is an amazing buy for around $169. The 30 vs 32 mm stanchions are not really going to matter much at 100mm travel.

Tony's Hobbies okk thank you 😊
@@TonyHob in indonesia, xcr 32 have 2 type, the one have rebound control and lower price than rockshox xc30
@@ladydi8712 i recently bought the xcr32 coil with "rebound control" , i havent got the chance to test it yet since my bike isnt built yet. Question is, does the adjuster really work? It seems that it endlessly rotates clockwise, althought it does have a limit if you turn it counter clockwise. Do you have the same fork or have you tried it before? I would like to know if this is normal for the xcr32 coil because all the units from the store i bought it from does the same thing (the forks are legit and so is the store). Thanks.
@@TonyHob you can buy a rebound cartridge assembly of an epixon and mount it on the xcr32 i've done it to mine,it works phenomenal!
Why is oil coming out of my lockout side?
Ian Thompson the only reason I can think of is that the sealed cartridge is leaking
I have similar one, and oil came out on the lockout side too, i wonder me if it was intended to use fork oil?
Hey man will 2.4 tires fit on that fork?
I have a 2.3 with plenty of room so I’m 99% sure it will fit

heard suntour forks sucks ,is it true ?
Only way to find out is ride one yourself. Too many "brand snobs" out there to listen to rumors, and it depends what your intended use is. No, it is not as good as my Fox 34 ($600 fork) but it worked great for me on intermediate trails at around $150. To me that's a great value. The air version is even better.
@@TonyHob How about servicing? I heard the coil version needs less maintenance?
@@paska68 they coil is very reliable and you can probably get away with servicing it less often than the air. Simpler mechanism
Considering buyi a bike equipped with these forks ,,, I’m concerned with rust on the staunchions are they steel & how are they going so far...
