There are way to few icon videos on RUclips thanks keep them coming I tried to get a ride in one a few years back .....fully booked ......Now has become high on the bucket list.
I watched your head as you were turning base. You were looking left. Were you also looking at or for the mirror in the wing cuff to also verify (visually) if the landing gear was down? And the same for the water landings? That could also be a seventh check. Love the A5 videos keep them coming.
Yes the A5 does have a mirror in the location you are referring to. That is a recommended check but can't always be visually confirmed due to the size of the mirror, thus the emphasis on verifying and touching the gear controls while the gear is in transition. Thanks for the comment, Gerard.
I like the video. Although redundant for constant checking, we can't rely on computers for everything. There is always a situation when operating machinery that involves the human factor.
Thanks for the comment, Garry. While redundancy is usually all the more welcome, that still wouldn't compensate for when landing without flaps/clean on land or if someone were to forget to drop the flaps while landing on water. While the A5 was built to try and account for pilot error (AoA gauge, spin resistance, parachute, etc.) the fact of the matter is it's nearly impossible to completely engineer an aircraft to account for every possible human error. The crux of the video is to enhance piloting skills and to try and increase SA as much as possible, and repeating cues and maintaining focus will certainly help accomplish that.
@@KittyHawk221 Hey Adam -- the DA-42 is a great plane but the mission is quite different than the A5 in that the DA-42 is neither an amphib nor an aircraft intended to fly low and slow. There are a number of situations where an A5 pilot might reduce the power to do a low recon for instance with no intention of landing, and thus an audible indicator to check the gear would interfere with the flying experience and likely cause more of a distraction than anything else, assuming that's what you're proposing, opposed to simply performing a feet wet check and following the 6 cues. It's a system that many pilots would likely choose to turn off quite frankly or at least come to ignore. A final point on all of this because what you're saying is important, even if ICON implemented all of the suggestions proposed in this thread, other amphibs would likely still not have at least some of these features and the lessons of this video are meant to be apply to all amphib pilots.
@@iconaircraft or have it so after dropping below a certain altitude or the hight relative to the altitude of the ground/water body it would announce the gear position. This feature could be turned on or off and you would be able to change the altitude at which the aircraft announces that.
Seems like you could couple the gear to the water rudder and altimeter. When extending the water rudder, the gear would retract. Once the altimeter reads below say 50', a warning light goes off to caution the pilot to check.
One reason this would not work is that seaplanes do ALL landings and takeoffs with the water rudder retracted, not extended. Pilots learn this during their seaplane training. To non seaplane pilots, it might seem counterintuitive - but taking off or landing with the water rudder down is a great way to bend or break the water rudder. Water rudders are used only for low speed operations on the water (sailing, idle taxi, and plow taxi only).
In the absence of "queing" one can in fact use physical "cue cards"(index cards) thus committing these necessary actions in sequence done to memory and thus subject to testing either by your co-pilot or some form of "digital assistant." As a jet ski owner still seems a rather cumbersome form of transportation for moving along atop water/wave/air to me where the age of drone operations have been well evolved and extant for some time now.
Only thing wrong with drone flying is NO pilot!. I haven’t used anything but printed checklist since the 80’s when on a cross country my seat belt buckle was flapping in the slipstream removing a nice swath of paint from my cabin door. The sudden realization that if I forgot that, what else did I forget? made a checklist versus memory believer ever since. What’s wrong with: GEAR: LAND-DOWN / WATER-UP I made placards for things not on the checklist after entering a down wind on a 45 degree angle and almost failed to notice a Huey already in the pattern. Students tend to fixate rather than cross check in and out of the cockpit. Mine read: CROSS CHECK DUMMY! Works for me.
Couldn't there be a warning built into the plane? With GPS, the plane should know if it's over land or water. Couple that with the altitude and rate of descent and you could have a simple warning buzzer if it's in the incorrect position.
This is not possible because often during approach to a water landing, the plane is over land right up until the final moments when it comes to the water. Likewise, it is common at certain airports for the plane to be over water up until the final moment when it reaches the runway. There is no way to automate the landing gear position - the only option is to remind the pilot to check that it is in the desired position.
Seriously, who forgets to lower the landing gear before landing? it's literally the most important thing to do when landing, I mean if you can't even do this you shouldn't be flying
This is a very important subject matter for amphibious pilots and we hope you enjoy this review. Thanks for watching, all.
why can't you just install a small camera beneath the aircraft?
@@samcaptain001 there is a very small mirror molded into leading edge you can see wheels.
Thank you for the new video! The more the better as there is never enough instruction, training or safety reminders!

С ума схожу от этого самолета!!! Всей команде, создавшей это чудо, желаю счастья и творческих успехов!!!
Great safety training for both gear retracted water operation, and gear extended land operation.

Will ICON design a 4-seater aircraft?
No they will not. Icon is belly up April 2024..
( Belly up, that's pretty good considering the subject matter of this video )
Great ICON training and demonstration!

amazing aircraft and excellent instructor congratulations
It would be nice to have the plane (computer) announce gear position when flaps are down.

Such a beautiful Airplane... amazing

Instead of a warning, just auto-retract wheels over water or auto deploy wheels over land?

Very nice video!!!
I really love this aircraft

is it not easier to install a small camera as the surest way to confirm?
Still no actual landing footage on water!!!???

Sir, I'm 17 with dyscalculia, i would like to have a basic flying license, what to do..in order to get the licence? Please help me sir..
Thank for this video i think that if thé pilote use à check-list it would be simpler for him
Going for a ride in an ICON A5 is on my bucket list. Gear up! How can I get an ICON model like the one you have on your desk?
Awesome great video 👌
This aircraft is on my list.
One ill have one of those aaaa
Just a suggestion... But maybe the gear up indicator should read "Water Landing" and gear down should read "Runway Landing"
I like flying your planes in my simulator
Nathen was here…
Callouts are the mark of a conscientious pilot.
TL;DR ICON realises that checklists are a vital part of flight proceedure. Who knew!
You can always go around
Blue plane water and red for land .

Ребята, сделайте обзор на это чудо, на русском языке, ПОЖАЛУЙСТА!!! В России много поклонников этого красавца!)
It would have been funny if he actually landed with his gear down
