Beaching an Airplane | How to fly the ICON A5

- Beaching the ICON A5 highlights the aircraft’s versatility and is one of the most fun experiences you can have in a seaplane. Just imagine landing on the water nearby, idling up to your favorite spot, cutting the engine, and jumping out to enjoy a beautiful morning or afternoon on the beach. The amphibious capabilities of the aircraft unlock adventures that conventional airplanes simply don't allow.
Beaching is a lot of fun, but there are also several important factors to consider when beaching the ICON A5 to make sure you do it safely. Similar to beaching a boat or a jet ski, make sure that you take the wind and water conditions into consideration and also make sure that the area is suitable and won’t cause damage to the hull of the airplane.
As a reminder, this video is meant as a brief overview of beaching procedures and is not meant as a step by step instruction for how to beach an aircraft. Every A5 pilot must go through our landplane or seaplane transition course before being qualified to fly A5. These courses cover all beaching procedures and considerations in great detail.
We hope this video provides helpful insight into our training principles and also highlights the incredible versatility of the ICON A5.

We enjoyed making this one. Let us know if you have any further questions about beaching the A5. For info on owning an ICON A5, please check out our site for more: go.iconaircraft.com/ICON-A5-purchase-info
Let's start movin the metal! Far more enjoyable than watching those damn boat review sales pitches on Marine Max.
I really enjoyed watching the video but I enyoed more flying it by myself
I'm going to own this one day!
If you want to stay on the island, do you just drag it all the way up the beach, or is there some way to anchor it better?
@@madsroccato9644 You can tie it down, but bringing the hull far enough onto the beach prevents it from receding into the water.
Can’t wait to fly this thing in the new Flight Simulator!
Im flying it right now, its awesome, and the water looks so good
Nicholas van Orton So hows the sim?
Blair Aquilia lol
Open beta now, you can try ;)
Dmitriy Sechin wait what, can everybody fly the sim now?
I kinda love that the Icon's cockpit looks like a car dashboard. :D
Exactly what came across my mind!
Interesting perspective and totally opposite to mine. I always thought that car dashboard designers should spend a month at aircraft control panel designer school. I am not saying you’re wrong, but from esthetics and function, I have always thought airplane panels were better.
@@johnnukecop It is interesting but sharing my opinion: try looking on google images "2001 Ford Puma dashboard" for example. Also, the "copilot" side also looks like the passenger side of a car.
Also, the navigation unit is typically positioned as in cars.
In fact, the layout of this plane's dashboard is closer to a car than to planes. I do not know of any plane with a similar layout (it does not mean there is not, I know a few planes but not all of them).
I think that ICON did it on purpose to be closer to how they sell it "getaway vehicle for the weekend": even the founder and CEO of ICON wanted to make it "consumer-friendly" (which means looking like something more consumers know).
That is why it reminds a car you take to go on a weekend with your loved one. A "pure plane" often reminds of course pleasure but technicality, paperwork, maintenance, etc... On the other hand "a car's more simple, you just "take-off"!".
And I think this is a smart move from them.
Victortrotska I see you point to some extent, and spirit behind the decision. What frustrates me is the lack of good engine instrumentation in cars. Some only have a speedometer and a gas gauge. And many get a little to creative with displays that are hard to find and discern.
Trust me, I am delighted you added your opinion! It’s always fun to talk about different perspectives or points of view. I can’t expect to grow much if I’m not exposed to new thinking. And the cockpit, and of it’s self, would never stop me from buying one of these airplanes if I had the money.
I was a fireman, I worked at a bank in my own cubicle where people left me alone for the most part until 20 years later I'm burnt out, this is my third dream and I would love to get my sports license and teach others how to fly and I'm absolutely in love with seaplanes
Todd F. Do it. Don’t waste anymore time!
Awesome man. Only suggestion don’t get a sport go ahead and get your private and become a CFI
Good luck
Dork
Todd F. Most certifications for small planes are under 20 hours of training and under 10k go get it , one flight at a time
Putting this thing in MS2020 was the greatest sales advert ever.
In unrelated news I'm selling a house, no need for it. And maybe a kidney. And some kids. 🤔
They had an earlier model of this plane in Microsoft Flight. It was a spin-off I think of MSFSX
What’s odd is it’s been on X plane for awhile. I guess X plane is old news?
@@PistonsProps It's more a fact that X-Plane never gained as much popularity with the flight sim community as FSX had. It's all a question of market share.
The problem was this plane is very very expensive compared to other planes but as you can see its very comfortable it even looks like flying a car.
What does a Kidney get these days? :)
Again. I can’t wait to fly this in Microsoft flight sim! Thanks Icon, for making such a great aircraft!
I have so many awesome memories of flying the Icon A5 in Microsoft Flight (2012)
It's pretty nice in X-Plane 11 too
@@alaskanbas6507 wtf happened to that game??
Right? I can't wait to visit the Dalmatia islands or Carribean
@@driftz8429 The in game store and the servers shut down in 2013 they kind of just abandoned it. Their is a free download for it now but i'm pretty sure its in dutch. You can only use the icon.
I Flyed the A5 Icon on Microsoft Flight for the first time and was an amazing experience, good visibility, super easy to control, feels like a car, that mission when you have to go land close to the yacht, where is a party going on, always stuck on my head. Now on Microsoft Flight Simulator still my favorite plane to fly.
Any Jets on that game?
Edit: fighter jets to clarify
JP nope, i think there should be some third party developers working on some though
Yeah, because computer sims are real. You should go fly like that idiot who stole the Alaska Airlines plane and did loops until he crashed.
@@8654ZuluFoxtrot This guy did very impressive acrobatics with a large plane. The he committed a suicide. So it is amazing how much he learned from a simulator.
@@slaweksmyl3453 He actually lost control and crashed, but I get your point. Yes, sims can teach you a lot. But the comment was in jest, relax and smile a bit.
1:39 - "gears up, flaps down" is not something you'd hear normally lol
Another Tip... Know your tides! You don't want to beach on a sandbar for very long when the tide is going otherwise you may be hanging around for another 6-8 hrs. Don't ask me how I know.
Happens to many boats.
"I'll see you on a beaaaatch!" Tom Hanks in that World War 2 flick.
I can't imagine getting all wet and sandy and then climbing back into my $390,000 airplane.
The seats are quick-dry and there is a bilge pump, so it's pretty easy. You can also remove the floorboards of the aircraft and hose down the interior, as well.
A plane isn’t a car and won’t lose value with some sand.
That’s the funnest part of this plane
That's literally the whole point dude
Is it possible to ship this to Germany? I have no money but I'm interested.
Where I live the beaches are rocky and the water is cold. When you hop out of the plane to keep it from grinding on the rocks you would be in fifteen feet of water and swimming. Fun picnic.
Honestly such a cool and fun aircraft to fly in FS2020. It's evident that it isn't made for racing or high altitude flight, it even says the recommended limit is 80 knots. But it's so fun to fly over lakes or beaches and to cut the engine and see it slowly cruise into the water.
Came here because of my new fond love of this aircraft in MSFS. Not disappointed!
This Airplane is Incredible! One day I want to have a chance to fly on it!
F900EX . How about by a distressed property, fix it sell it and buy it cash? I’m it’s not that easy.....at first.
The young lady pilot makes it look like it’s the easiest thing in the world. More power to her! 👏👏👏🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸
This thing is fun as hell to fly in Microsoft flight simulator!
This is crazy cool. You'd definitely be the coolest person anywhere around lol
Interior llooks like a car, it is a plane that can SWIM! Mind blown right here.
Those FS2020 graphics are amazing!
An excellent and versatile light aircraft, the ICON A5. 🤩 I would take a small anchor with me, then you can go swimming without the plane drifting in the wind.
Def needed this video. just brought 5 of these. good to know how to beach em
Yes, I was doing loop dee loops in my A5 just now, but the beach thing was so confusing 🤔
I just want this as a boat. Forget the fact it can fly as well.
Why flying seems fun
Just get a boat for more room and it’ll be cheaper
Be a very lame boat.
Not a bad idea you have, it could be modded to fly safely 5 feet over water... Smooth faster than a boat and simpler. They do exist.
Definitely will buy one of these as soon as I win the lottery and learn to fly! Flight Simulator has a lot to answer for.
This woman is professional, reliable.
Pretty much need to have one of these in my life.
I hope to afford something like this in the future looks so fun
I am Jonathan too
win the lottery, sell drugs..or Rob the bank. Its the only way unfortunately
This video has so many views only bcz this is in fs2020
I love everything about this plane
This airplane is so beautiful, I am speechless. I have learned of it's existence from Flight Simulator, I have found out that it "looks" easy to flight with it, but in reality it may be harder, but nevertheless, the plane is a beautiful machinery. To fly and land on any terrain, including water, this is golden and if I had the money, I definitively would bought this. Easy to maintain, "easy" to fly and perhaps not so much money to maintain this beautiful aircraft, would make anyone's dream of owning an aircraft.
Welcome back to another episode of RUclips thinking I have 1 million bucks right in my pocket.
it's "just" 269k in base spec
@@GraveUypo still expensive compared to other small planes
If I had the money I would love to do the plane thing instead of very expensive cars
Pretty cool. Very professional pilot. Thank you.
The icon A5 is hands down my favourite plane in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
Can y'all make me one with like a corolla dashboard and for like 40k out the door 😂😂
Toyota already does... But the wings cost $350K
I’m in love with this plane, I’m just hoping after college I can go though with my dream job and hopefully get this or a possible next generation of it because I’m so interested in it
Oh my word this just became my fav aircraft, just wow!
I always fly arround in one, in the new MS Flight Sim! Owning one in reallife would be so awesome ^^
Imagine showing up to Anclote on Labor Day weekend in one of these. 😂
Who's here because of FS2020? I am looking forward to beaching my A5! (Nice aircraft, wish I could buy one IRL!). I just bought one of these in the game, its such fun to fly in the game, I bet it is IRL too.
This is an amazing aircraft. Would do really well in the Caribbean for island hopping. Did n't even realize when touchdown took place in the water , it was a smooth landing.
Thanks for another awesome video!
I did my best to get a demo flight when I was in Florida last January, and they told me that I wasn't a serious buyer. I guess being retired at 49 in Newport Beach isn't serious enough. Oh well.
You didn't look rich enough?
Didn't miss much.
If you want a sketchy underpowered, poorly built plane go for it. I saw the development process from the beginning and wouldn’t sit my ass in it if you paid me.
Who remembers Microsoft Flight from 2012? Always wanted one of these since that game!
This is a real fun toy that everyone can‘t be affored...
I love flying the a5 in Microsoft flight simulator 2020
That's an amazing little fun aircraft! Nice job ICON! I hope you'll get the commercial success this plane deserves!
The range is more than decent too.
The icon, what a beauty!
very cool! I was just talking to a high school friend who used to fly into tampa and I told him of my interests in island hopping into small island and he warned me expext visit from the gov't as drug runners flies amphibian planes into such situation for their pickups.
Wow! This is amazing! Flying the Icon A5 seems relaxed and easy!
my favorite plane it's so much fun to fly this thing
Excellent tutorial.
Thank You for put this Aircraft in Microsoft Fligh Simulator 2020, best marketing ever.
This aircraft is awesome.
That looks like a butt load of fun.
Excellent show thanks
Thank you for the new post Genesah! It’s been awhile since your last. Just love that plane!
Beautiful plane and pilot :) This is great. Can’t wait to try it in FSXX
Как же я люблю этот самолет!!!😘
Really love this bird. Land or sea options is soo amazing..
Brings back memories of my lake (la4-200) lots of fun.
lol Love the American Accent saying.....Water. lol WATerrrrrrr...Water. 😆😆😆😆😆
LOve it.
In FS2020, it don't likes me. But with you, its great!
Muito legal seu Canal parabéns pelo Vídeo meu Coração abraço pra você sua linda 🕭🔔🌷🌷✊🖒
Such an amazing machine!
Coolest airplane ever! Wish I could afford one.
Omg she is so calm
I am a recent college graduate who can't find a job and also has no flight experience, yet here I am trying to figure out how to aquire one of these.
start small, join a flight school, get a job in aviation
Thank you for teaching me how to land it and fly it. Now i just need a million dollars
nice video with an awesome plane some awesome footage and a very symphatic pilot :)
Awesome video!
Wish to have this beauty, would be great fun
this plane looks very nice
Jorge "Gamebred" Masvidal voice: "Super Necessary!.."
Awesome video, love it ❤️ can’t beat water operations
Awesome video !🛫😊👍👍👍
Watching this here like if I’m going to own one lmao
Idk if you can technically own one. Last I heard it was more of a you pay them 400,000 dollars and you can borrow thier plane type of deal.. unless it's changed, thats how I heard it was.
@@Ryan-re1rs who has $400,000 lying around lol

My favorite airplane in Microsoft Flight Sim 2020
As an aero engineer I've never seen a prettier small aircraft.
made in Baja California :) beautiful design, big fan
Very good,thank you ALL
I kinda miss the "shut up and take my money" memes in the comment section :D
I guess that's due to a lack of money...
I'd love it if they made an aircraft like the A5 but that looked like an old wooden motor launch. Imagine a Riva Aquarama with wings.
Wow so really nice vidoe
don't forget always the lifesaver ⭕
Nice video. SUPER.
my fave flight simulator plane
Simply amazing
البشرية تعيش في طبقات مرعبة كان الله في عون كل فقراء هذا العالم والحمد لله تعالى
The most of my dream plane
That was a wonderful video thank you. My dream: Amphib aircraft landing on lakes in Canada, open cockpit, start fishing... Lake 4 was my aircraft, now going to have to look how viable this airplane is.
An amphib aircraft with a built-in live-well! The aircraft equivalent of a fishing boat.
Surely buying one for me and my dog... I hope the passenger seat is pet-proof. :D
Beautiful aircraft. Once off the step, however, it becomes a boat, one with no keel, no reverse, and only the puniest of rudders. Add a bit of wind and current into the mix, and you’ll soon wish you had stayed on dry land.
I clicked on this video thinking it was a Flight Simulator 2020 video lmao.
So cool!
One day I will have one...
Them:it’s and icon A5
Me: So it’s basically a bigger and better sea plane
Smaller*
Thanks to FS2020 this is my new favourite aeroplane
Can’t wait to fly this thing in the new Flight Simulator 2020 in Paris , and I'd make a landing on the Seine :D
It always amazes me how many seaplane pilots are not wearing a PFD while flying. If something happens that caused the aircraft to invert that is not the time to try to grab a PFD tucked behind the seat while water is entering the cockpit.
