In a small plane at 5,000 feet you feel like you're almost standing still relative to the ground, while when you fly close to objects you feel like you're screaming. But especially with single engine aircraft there is safety with altitude, which affords greater choice of emergency landing venues in the event of an engine-out emergency. Flying low over water is legal, buzzing boats and buildings is not. It's not a video game.

I was on the field as the ground coordinator in my flight suit and Roy walked over, introduced himself, and we had a few moments of small talk about aviation. When I saw this was an Icon A5 I scratched my head. I have seen many videos of this light sport plane. Its designed with the novice pilot in mind and has several safety features that for all practical purposes prevents the plane from doing things that would get the pilot killed. It prevents stalls and has an emergency parachute system (must be deployed above 500 feet I believe).
Icon has gone above and beyond to ensure that pilots are trained in the use of the aircraft as well as all safety procedures. They have simplified all controls and front dash panels to make the aircraft less busy and easier to handle without a cockpit full of confusing instruments. This allows the pilot to ENJOY flying more and also allows for a pilot to quickly learn how to use the plane, especially since they must posses a normal pilot license and are qualified solo before being allowed to fly this plane. Icon provides direct training by qualified ICON A5 trainers as well to ensure the pilot is properly instructed and aware of all plane characteristics, Inspecting before a flight, all flight controls, flight characteristics and handling, as well as all LIMITATIONS of use and all Emergency procedures.
Also, this plane is AMPHIBIOUS, which provides MORE places to land the plane in an emergency becuase the plane FLOATS and turns into a BOAT on water. Many use this Plane to get to out of the way FISHING SPOTS and then FISH from the Plane turned boat.
Based on the TESTS and videos have seen on this plane there is virtually no reason anyone should DIE from useing this aircraft when used according to the manufacturers specifications and warnings. That being said, ALL PLANES are inherently DANGEROUS, just like CARS and BOATS, and it mandates that anyone flying a plane take all the necessary training and precautions to ensure they are operating the plane safely and within specifications and use cases that the plane was designed.
Meaning, you dont try to fly a commercial transport plane like an aerobatic plane, they are two different types of planes and have different characteristics and therefore must be flown in a manner consistant with those design parameters.
Flying under the influence of drugs is equivalent to a DUI/DWI. Obviously it NEVER should be attempted. It is very SAD that Roy was having so many issues in his life that he felt the use of MULTIPLE types of drugs, that should have never been mixed in the first place, was what he needed to cope. It almost comes across as suicide (based on more than 3x the amount of amphetamine in his system to cause death, he was a dead man flying before the crash) when seen in this light.
But as with most people that use drugs and Rx in this manner, once sober they will say they have little recall of what they did and how it affected themselves and others at the time. While Roy struggled with addiction since at least 2015 those around him also struggled with codependency and enabling him. Several rehab stints did not help him beat the addiction and seemingly his family was not enough of a motivation for him to get off the drugs either.

I watched this man pitch for my home team (Philadelphia Phillies). What a senseless lose...as a pilot myself I have to say that flying an aircraft is not like an ATV or jet ski as it was promoted by ICON. It's still an aircraft and without the due respect you need to give to the act of piloting an airplane, it will bite you and sometimes bite bad. RIP Roy

As painful as it is to think about, I've always had the feeling he was committing suicide. Two stints and counting of rehab and drugs back in his system, was self medicating again and seemed like he lamented the decision not to accompany his wife on errands. His "I should've just gone with you" texts to his wife almost seemed like he was looking for a way out of his decision or was hoping his wife was mad enough to force him. Cant underestimate the strong pull of depression, it doesn't matter if you're a legendary pitcher, billionaire or a hobo in the street, the longer it goes the harder it is to fight it. Roy's plane gave him a sense of flying away from himself and his dark thoughts, which is why he obsessed over it and always wanted to fly it. So sad, rest in peace Doc

While the Icon is a lovely plane, it is irresponsible of the manufacturer to position it against ATVs and skidoos. And of course the pilot was daredeviling while massively impaired by multiple heavy duty meds. Thank God he did not crash into a boat or building.

It kind of seems like he committed suicide? That, or he was just really stupid about pulling all sorts of maneuvers with his brand new plane while at extremely low altitude and very little experience flying. Honestly, given how absurdly low his altitude was, I doubt pulling the parachute system would have saved him; the parachutes wouldn't have had enough time to deploy and slow down the aircraft.

Roy Halladay suffered back pain and got addicted to opioids as a result. He'd been raised by an overbearing father, determined his son would be a great pitcher. He bought a house with a basement big enough for young Roy to practice in. Other kids played a variety of sports for fun - Roy was encouraged to focus hard on only one. This may have made him the perfectionist he was, not content with being a great pitcher, he wanted to the the best, and beat himself up for the slightest fault.
Who knows if it was suicide or a cocktail of prescription drunks and testosterone - the deadliest substance of them all. Whatever the cause, it's tragic he abandoned a wife and children who loved and needed him. He crashed in just 5 feet of water! Unreal.
