  • The increasing availability of airstrips, safety concerns and requirements for better fuel economy have resulted in the gradual decline of seaplanes and so-called flying boats. Private aviation, however, is not ready to give up on the concept, so quite a few of old-timers are produced till this day plus brand-new models are being developed with the use of modern composites and innovative powertrains. Today we will look into the topic of amphibious aircraft that feel equally comfortable fairing through the skies, landing on water and taking off from short runways.

    !!! IMPORTANT UPDATE !!! Super Petrel was originally designed in France and later popularized by the Brazilian EDRA when they began production in 2002. Today this design is manufactured through Scoda Aeronáutica of Ipeúna, São Paulo, Brazil. The Super Petrel USA is a Florida-based company that distributes and maintains Super Petrels in the USA. Apologies for the confusion.

    More seaplanes should use hydrofoils. It's such a low drag penalty in the air and such a massive increase in water performance. You're basically giving up free performance if you don't

    • @OrdinaryLatvian

      Wouldn't it act like an anchor and nosedive you into the surface when landing?

    • @gormauslander

      @@OrdinaryLatvian It's a lift-generating device, so the faster you're going, the harder it pushes up. You would still get higher drag than the air, like you're describing, so it's important to land slightly tail-first.

    • @automotiveterritory
      @automotiveterritory  3 года назад

      Hi there. Here are the excerpts from Wikipedia.
      In April 2016, the ICON A5 purchaser's agreement was made public and was noted by the aviation media as containing many controversial elements not usually found in aircraft purchase agreements. These included contractually required pilot training, maintenance, agreements not to sue, the requirement for factory airframe overhauls every 2,000 hours or ten years (whichever comes first), and a limit on the aircraft's life of 6,000 hours, or thirty years. Furthermore, each aircraft would be equipped with a camera and recorder to monitor pilot behavior, that is owned by the manufacturer but must be maintained by the owner. Owners would have to agree to be "supportive" of the company. Future owners were required to sign the same agreement or face penalties

    • @automotiveterritory
      @automotiveterritory  3 года назад

      In May 2016, the company admitted that the released contract had been a mistake. Hawkins stated, "It should not have gone out in the form it went out without an explanation. [Customers] had a right to be taken aback." The company issued a revised contract that removed many, but not all controversial elements. Removed were the audio and video cockpit recorder, the "responsible flyer" clause, limiting the owner's cost of the mandatory airframe overhaul to $15,000, and removing the 30-year life limit. Retained were the agreement not to sue, the requirement for company-approved training, and the requirement that the agreement bind future owners.

      @@automotiveterritory Just the fact that they originally issued the ridiculous contract is enough of an alarm convince me to stay away from that company at all costs. It speaks a lot for the people who wrote that. This makes me think of a word that begins with commu, and ends with nism.
