Amphibian airplanes can be a relatively new concept even to pilots. That’s because most of us train in tricycle, land airplanes. But the fact is 70% of planet is covered by water so it only makes sense that we have airplanes that can land or float on water. Well we do, and today we are checking out 5 of the best light modern sea planes available in the industry.
Being that these aircraft are light, and many of them in the LSA category, you get limited amount space/useful load and you’re traveling no more than 120 miles per hour for the most part. Here are the airplanes listed:
    1. Icon A5 - Arguably one of the most technologically advanced light plane built in the last 20 years. The Icon A5 stuck a chord with many old and new pilots, particularly those who want to fly just for fun or sport. The airplane is known for its good handling capabilities and anti-stall safety feature. But honestly there is no such thing as anti-stall for an airplane. Due to troubles and some failed promises over the years, the ICON initial goal to take over the sport aviation market has somewhat stalled. There are very few production airplanes flying today, and pilot/owners seem to be very happy with the product. Below are specs for the A5.
    USEFUL LOAD: 430-550 lbs
    RANGE: Up to 491 miles
    SPEED: Up to 109 mph
    PRICE: $269,000
    2. Super Petrel LS - If you’re in the US, You probably haven’t heard about this amphibious plane. Me either, not until researching for this video. The Petrel is a French/Brazilian design and although popular around the world, its a bit quiet here in the United States. With all the cool features in the airplane though, which includes double wings, and a turbo charged engine upgrade, all for $175,000. Not bad, hopefully the company gets more love and coverage. Below are specs for the Super Petrel.
    USEFUL LOAD: 537 lbs
    RANGE: Up to 590 miles
    SPEED: Up to 115 mph
    PRICE: $175,000
    3. Vickers Waves - An Icon A5 lookalike but much sleeker. This airplane is designed by founder and owner Paul Vicker from new Zealand. Lots of cool features including those folding wings also seen the Icon A5. But the Vicker is still in design phase. There is no flying prototype yet to confirm any performance numbers. Below are specs for the Vicker Waves.
    USEFUL LOAD: 500 lbs
    RANGE: Up to 828 miles
    SPEED: Up to 138 mph
    PRICE: $180,000
    4. MVP - The name alone draws special attention. MVP is another light seaplane that flames to be the most practical of all. With this plane you can fly on land, water and snow. You can also take it fishing, camping and much more. Perfect airplane for the all the adventurous daredevils out there. Below are specs for the MVP.
    USEFUL LOAD: 450 lbs
    RANGE: N/A
    SPEED: Up to 120 mph
    PRICE: $189,000
    5. Searey - Available in both light sport and experimental with your choice of engine, ranging from the Rotax 912, 914 or 915. The Searey airplane is hands down the best bank for the money. No it’s not the best looking plane when compared to the other sleeker ones like the A5 or the Vicker, but you get all the same feature and then some with the Searey. And a complete light aircraft will only cost you $125,000. Below are specs for the Searey.
    USEFUL LOAD: 450 lbs
    RANGE: Up to 416 miles
    SPEED: Up to 120 mph
    PRICE: $125,000

The SeaMax should be on here, they are starting to be imported from Brazil. Very nice plane, has retractable gear, longer range than A5 and larger payload. Looking at the weight the Icon should not be an LSA. It’s too heavy.

The biplane offers STOL, higher maneuverability at slow speeds, lower stall speed, greater lift, more ridged construction and shorter overall wing span. It is less efficient at higher speeds.

    • @doncarlo5
      @doncarlo5 2 года назад +3

biplanes are sturdier, more maneuverable and have STOL, but sacrifice top speed . For most owners, the biggest disadvantage of not being able to fold the wings for storage in your garage, would probably impose a different choice . I'm still waiting till someone comes out with an ingenious AND affordable way to bring a sea plane to the public ... I would even opt for a DIY kit, if only there was a reasonable one on the market: I mean, something that looks good, flies well, has acceptable range, has a reasonable tag price, and offer a higher payload than just a backpack ... I know, I know, I'm just a visionary ... but visions are what distinguish us from the rest of God's creation ...

Icon ramping up production in a big way now. The importance of "trailerable" and "garage kept" cannot be overstated. also i think there is a parachute system in the icon. still no booms on the wing tho remarkably. great presentation.

Seawind is probably the best, its a 4 seater with all the bells... problem is its expensive 350k+
Aventura is the best for the money, it runs 100k flat for the 2 seater, and if you want to build your own it costs 26k for a single seater, also has ultralight option so you don't have to get a license. Land on water/land.

Just letting you know mojo, the LSA aircraft almost always have alot more useful load than they can put on paper, the FAA actually limit's the maximum gross weight, so the LSA developers will just put on paper the max allowed gross weight even though the plane can usually handle much more.

I like the super Petrel. I've watched a few videos on it. It seems like a good strudy reliable small aircraft with unforgiving tendencies if comments are to be taken factually. I like the bi-plane config also and the reasons behind that choice of design make sense to me. But I'm not a designer. However if I was a pilot and had money to get a small versatile aircraft, then the Petrel would be a highly considered choice. Along with the Blackfly ( which is a vertical take off craft. though I can't remember if that has amphibious roles also?)
But then again I'm looking at flying for the interactive experience. I have piloted gliders (K21's), once flown a light aircraft, and parachuted, so my experiences are limited and therefore mixed with how I have experienced and perceive flying; I want the basic, easiest, safest, multirole, fun, craft ! Lol. I think vto's are the future, and so you incorporate amphibious ability then a small plane like that will be amazing. Especially if it's mechanically reliable and simple and affordable. And if electric/solar power is used or advanced micro/miniaturisation of turbine/air engines (currently used in modern airline engines), and also if coupled with other new energy supplying systems were used?; Then I feel an independent manufacturer/engineer will produce an amazing mode of flying transport. Driving as such won't be needed. And I like the idea/concept of being able to live,/"work"/recreate in a multirole"plane".
I aft say all the best stuff comes from the variety outside of the main aircraft producers and formulators of restrictions.

    • @PilotMelch
      @PilotMelch 4 года назад +3

Why? The Icon A5 is heavy, slow, has a horrible accident record so far, and costs as much as a luxury home. Go fly one, smile, and think it's great. Then, go fly a Super Petrel (www.superpetrelusa.com). It's faster, and it's slower (lands slower), carries more, has dual glass avionics, 2-axis autopilot, electric trim, angle of attack indicators, more maneuverable on the water, and flies like a dream. And it costs 1/3 as much.

Wish they had longer range on flying and more payload . Would be great for puddle jumping in alaska.

The petrel is a biplane because of the added lift. That's the benefit.

The Vickers is running a 160hp titan engine which gives it completely different performance output than the others running the 100hp rotax.

what if there was like a game show where pilots would basically compete in a huge game of hide and seek in islandy locations and everyone had a seaplane

What about the Lisa Akoya out of France? It has a top speed of 138mph (limited US LSA speed, does 180mph in Europe), it only burns 3-4 gallons of fuel per hour, has a 550lbs useful load, 777 mile range (1250 miles if you get the upgraded fuel tank), can land on snow as well, and has electronic folding wings. It’s costs around as much as an Icon A5 but outperforms it in everything but aesthetics appeal. It should’ve definitely made the list.

Just a thought ~ YOU MIGHT SHOULD ~ explain what flying an EXPERIMENTAL certificated aircraft MEANS? Bet most have no clue, speaking as an A&P Mechanic.
But GREAT video showing the NEW FASHIONS in the SEAPLANE / Amphib world.
Just hard to compete with a Cessna Caravan on amphibious floats ~ imo. GREAT VIDS ~ keep it UP . The C-185 on amphibs REALLY made the OIL PATCH INDUSTRY workhorse in the Gulf of Mexico. (hauls a load).
I believe MOJOGRIP is doing a wonderful service to general aviation enthusiasts ~ OUTSTANDING vids my friend !!

Well, well, well, you did show the ATOL but You did not really give it a fair go. Its from Finland and I think its the best out of the whole bunch. And its not "pie in the sky" like some you showed as they do not even have anything airworthy yet. Thanks for posting & Regards from Alaska.
