Just finished my accent wall project. The math for the spacing was the key to the overwhelming success, thanks for all the great tips. Wish I could send a picture, it looks awesome.
Simple formula for figuring out spacings, is adding one more to your dividing when doing the math. So let’s say you have something at 30 inch wide, and you want 4 sections, you’d divide that 30” by 5, which gives you your 6” CENTERS for 4 pieces. It works like a charm, then all ya gotta do is center up your board or item by knowing that center…. So say you have a 12’ wall, and want five vertical boards up, you’d take 144” divide that by 6, and it’ll give you 24” centers. And say you’re using 1x4 stock, you move a tic mark to 1 3/4” to the right of Center, and a tic mark at 1 3/4” to the left of Center. That will give you your boards placement on the wall. Then plumb up a line from the outter tic marks and go to town with install. Hope this can come in handy for somebody
My compliments, I recently discovered you and you have become my idol. I hope that goole translator does his duty, a warm greeting from Marco and all of Italy too bad I don't understand a word from you but you show me how you do it and it's perfect, a hug.
Finally! A painter who knows to brush the wood. Frankly, I would use a small (hot dog) roller, too. A normal roller will never smooth out on such a limited area.
Wow! I was literally searching RUclips videos for this like 2 days ago and was shocked when one of my subscribed channels didn't have it. Thanks so much for uploading this!
The trim that you removed close to the ceiling I believe is called picture-rail molding. Instead of putting nails in you wall you would suspend your pictures from the rail molding. Although the area between the ceiling and the picture-rail molding is usually painted the same as the rest of the wall. Thanks for the project idea Brad.
You know someone is good at what they do when they make it look easy....That is definitely a very complex process. You make it look very do-able for me. I am going for it! ... Thank you sir.
The most complete and informative video about this topic. I congratulate you, you have helped me determine what I will do in the next days concerning this project.
Thank you for a practical, easy application video that includes how to do measurements, etc. I’m still considering whether or not to do this project but this video has really been helpful.
This wall looks amazing! I appreciate the thorough explanations. I got a new house and want to do an accent wall, and your explanations are going to help me a ton! :)
I like how relaxed your approach is with everything vs being OCD. I say this because I’m super OCD and it’s nice to be reminded that a simple approach is sometimes the best approach. Well done 👍🏻
A super easy way to figure out spacing is to go to a fabric store and buy a roll of 1 or 2" elastic. Some people use this for spacing when doing deck railing. Make marks at every inch or whatever you want, then stretch the elastic across the length you have. Your lines that you marked on the elastic will give you the center lines for the boards. It's easier than how I awkwardly explain it.
Nice project Brad, a Graco airless paint sprayer would have been an awesome tool to have on this project. Any excuse I can get to buy a tool is a good excuse!
Nicely done Brad!! So fun fact, it was actually your wainscot video from forever ago that got me watching your Channel Bud!! Hoping all is well guys, Dirty Jersey out!!
The crown moulding in my house has that other thinner piece under it to make it look thicker. We have a Colonial style home so it fits in and it looks great. To each their own though.
I agree. In my area the cheapest homes have no crown, the next level up has crown and the high end homes have crown and the bottom trim board and center paint.
Looks great and the best walkthrough I've seen so far. I'm working on a wall the same size. What measurement did your spacings equal out to with 5 sections? Also can you share the paint color?
This is gorgeous. Though I don't think my hubby will agree that I have yet another project idea for our home. LOL Not sure if the color will match or if there will be furniture in front of the outlet, but they do make gray outlets and plates. We switched to gray in our master bath because our plates our stainless.
@@Fixthisbuildthat Same here. We put brown on the side of our wood stained island and bead board backsplash in the kitchen, so they wouldn't stand out. I think the gray is called industrial grade, but the amperage is the same.
Oh. My. Word. Shims to level the front edges. Why have I never seen this on a how-to video before? I have some joints in a few places that I tried to fill and level from the front and when the light hits a certain way…well, they’re gross. I now know how to fix them and avoid the issue next time! So exciting!
This video was outstanding 🤩 Thanks so much for making it. I didn’t see the link you mentioned for the 3D software. That would really help me do my first ever project.

@@Fixthisbuildthat yeah he does trim work and finish carpentry, hence the name. He explains a lot of what he does during the course of his work. Pretty cool guy to watch. He did his wall about 6-8 months ago.
@@Fixthisbuildthat Defiantly worth looking him up. Great tips. Helped a ton when doing molding in my place after the floors. We have rounded corners in the house.
This is awesome. My wife wants me to do this next weekend. Question. When you use the liquid nail / sealer caulk to put the boards up, won't that rip apart your wall if you decide to take it down?
I just finished this project today thanks to brad! But I didn’t use the liquid nails thinking the same thing. It did cause a little issue… without the bond of the glue, my boards would flex and move in some spots. One was in a joint section while I was filling the gap. I tried to add some more nails then the board recessed and I had a mismatch at that joint as the cross member was shimmed out to meet it.
I've seen people put board and batten using some kind of thin MDF type of board on the wall first. This way it avoids the drywall being on the inside of your squares. Is there a reason why you didn't do that here?
Depends on the request from the client, or your desires. I’ve had requests for smooth interiors - you can use thin melamine or float whole wall w drywall mud (level 4/5 finish), or particular texture types - depends on the personal preference. Have fun!
I really love this and would like to try it on one of my walls but my home is 125 years old and I have most (assuming) of the original large oak baseboard. Is there a way I can do this while keeping the original baseboard as it is quite large compared to newer homes? Thank you
Very nice video, liked & subscribed! Was your wall smooth or textured? If I have textured walls like a lot of houses have these days, can I just install straight on it? Or do I need to sand first or use a thin board to cover the whole wall? Thanks
I just finished my wall and I wish it could say it looked as good as yours. I think I had too much caulk residue and the paint job was rushed. Can I email you a pic and have you give me your thoughts on the best was to fix it? I’m guessing some sanding and repaint? Perhaps with a sprayer…
That Husky box cutter is the best thing ever. I bought like 6 of them years ago. Too bad they don’t sell them anymore. You should do a video of how awesome it is.
Okay, at 5:49 how did you copy the components you had selected all the way to the end like that??? Was that just an editing trick for the video? Or can you really do that??? Because that would be some serious time-savings for me! Hahaha! PLEASE respond to this question lmao
Wow, Thank you, best video I’ve watched. You look like you have quite the beautiful shop! Thanks for all your tips and guidance. I’m ready to tackle my wall. Going to surprise my husband…Just curious as to the colour of paints you used in the room. They look amazing together.
Can you tell me the software you used to create the drawing of what you did before you placed on the wall? That would be super helpful to me. Thank you.
Practical question: how long does the prep for this project take? And is it possible to get a seamless finish at the joints? (Try as I might I can still see the line despite wood filler and sanding. My prep is taking ages and I’m wondering what I’m doing wrong trying to get that seamless finish)
Caulk and paint make you the joiner you ain't. Brilliant and sums me up nicely

I'd get a nice color matched outlet plate, I think they make paintable ones as well.
I would suggest using a 5in1 putty knife for scraping caulking off walls. If you keep it sharp, it makes quick work of the task.
Was this wall not textured or did you end up sanding the whole wall? How would you go about doing this on a textured wall?
Same question I have! Did you ever get an answer?
Use 1/8” mdf and cover the seems with the mouldings
