Pro tip...if the walls aren't straight, scribe the boards to the wall and cut them out. It's a PITA for sure, but looks clean. You could also fill with joint compound or caulking, which is easier. And for the ceiling and vaulted pieces, miter both boards so you don't have to use table saw. Take that angle and cut it in half. Boom. Really nice job!
This board and batten wall looks really cool!! Tip not asked for.. Never use caulk to fill in gaps between wood. This would have come out much more professional looking if you'd have used a wood filler or even drywall spackling. I know the extra step of sanding really bites the dust but the finish is so much nicer. As a professional perfectionist it would drive me crazy to look at it like this.
That moment on the floor was so real haha! We've all had that moment when we're like "at some point I will get myself off this floor / couch and do what I need to do, but I'm going to stay here for now".
Hi Sam, the joint between the first piece and the second piece is effectively a mitre joint. you should have found the angle of the ceiling at this meeting point and then divided that angle by two. you should then have cut the meeting ends of these two boards to that angle. Then they would have been the same width as each other.
I've been trying to decide what to do with a 9' x 16' bedroom wall that I want to make an accent wall. After seeing this project, which is beautiful, I have decided that board and batten is definitely NOT the way to go for me.😅 I just don't have the skill set or energy for such a project. Thanks to videos like yours I am able to narrow down my possibilities.
You really did a great job Sam! Doing this type of work for 40 years...im impressed...here we call it a library or lawyer wall...I do it quite a bit different....
I just finished the same type of project. I bypassed the tape for the visual and just did a scale drawing instead. I also snapped horizontal lines on the wall. I tried Brad nails at first, but I didn't like the way they held into the drywall, so I opted for sheetrock screws. I also opted for 5" wide MDF boards. Drilling the holes and countersinking for the sheet rock screws took a bit of time. I countersunk them enough to fill with putty later but then had to prime the filled holes (150). I opted to use a roller and brush and a one coat coverage paint. My wall is 25 ft long and 11 ft high to the peek. I had about 30 hrs invested, which includes time at HD cutting boards to approximate lengths
Looks amazing 👏 I wanna fo something similar in my bedroom! Here's a pro tip: When using a jigsaw you should always tape the outline of your cuts bc not only does it make it easier to see but more importantly it protects your finished surface from scratches.
You have done an amazing job Sam and what a daughter you are to your parents. You obviously think the world of them and it shows in your love and dedication to these projects. As a dad myself, I hope my kids do something like that for me someday.
Man who cares what people say about your walls! The fact that you did it yourself speaks measures. You saved a lot of money and it looks great! Of course the pros are going to critique your work. If everyone did diy they would be out of a job. Diyers don't pay attention to folks when always have something to say. ( Well I would have done it like this or I would have done it like that. To the trained eye it looks whatever but to diyers it's looks great. Saved money on material and labor! I salute you for at least trying and making it look good for yourself. Thanks for sharing!!
The baby gap pencil, the couture paint suit…that WALL 😱! Amazing! It makes the room look bigger! It’s soooo fantastic! Your parents have a rad daughter 😁!
Great job! On most the houses I’ve done we’ve kept the baseboard heater the same color throughout. On an accent wall like this it can make the wall stand out even more.
Good work. I add this for your viewers’ benefit: MDF and primed pine are not created equal. MDF is cheaper, but weighs a lot more (important for both handling it alone AND getting it attached to the wall). MDF cannot get wet (no mopping of floor with MDF baseboard) But MDF dust is cancer-causing and because of the amount of sanding you will have to do at every intersection where you have two boards crossing, I would not consider MDF.
Looks great and good video. On the strip that you ripped narrower at the ceiling your issue was you didn’t half the angle and cut it on both pieces like a mitre.
You are amazing!! Just love watching you create these amazing spaces. I would love to start basic DIY woodwork. I live in Anaheim Ca. Would you recommend anywhere I can take an intro to tools, etc. in my area.
at 9:02, I learned the lesson too by my own mistake. The problem isn't the wall, it's the miter cut. Both angled piece and the top piece need to be miter cut 50% of the angle. Otherwise, the top piece in your video is 90 degree, it will NOT match the length of the edge of left piece which is not 90 degree. Both pieces have to have the same angle in order to have the same length on the edge. Hope it helps future projects.
In retrospect: 1. What would you have done different, 2. After sometime has passed, do your parents still love the wall, and color? 3. Would they have wished they’d had done something different? ie less squares? Thanks
I love this! It turned out great. I've been wanting to do this but the wall has crazy angles and I've only seen videos with a straight box shape. Thanks for showing it can be done with the angles
What a great job you did, perfection, it looks so classy, brava! 😊👍 Blue is my favourite color so I love that too. I always admire your perseverance and attention to detail no matter what, and it shows in your results. 💞
That angle issue you had around 9:06. I think you can avoid that if you cut half the angle on both ends rather than the whole angle on one end. So like 22.5 on both the top and the side instead of 0 on the top and 45 on the side. Then you can keep the piece full width instead of having to rip it down. But even still, the end product looks great!
Maybe! That entire section of ceiling was about 1/4” lower than the rest of the room. So, it was a lot easier to just rip it. It blended well too. Wouldn’t be able to tell at all if I didn’t show it in the video (but, I like to keep it real here).
Thank you so much for sharing this video - this gives me so much drive to want to do this in my livingroom! I have a question and am hoping you see this question seeing this is an older video - how did you decide how far apart your vertical boards were going to be? Thank you again for taking us along! You are so young and so talented!!!!
Hi Sam. I laughed out loud when you referenced "Dexter" as you began to use the plastic and I also laughed out loud when you 'modeled' that sexy white overall outfit and posed seductively as you declared that you were ready for your 'close up'. The karate demo was pretty funny as well. You just needed to add a little "Wax On.....Wax Off" segment. I'm enjoying getting to know the zany side of Sam and I'm looking forward to watching you complete this beautiful room. Thanks for an enjoyable performance. I'll be pulling for you when the Oscars for 'Best Performance' are awarded next March.
Sheesh 🥵 you did a freaking great job! You had me anxious the whole time because you seemed way to comfortable on the later haha I was like please don’t fall please don’t fall.
the color is epic ! it might seem like a simple squarish wall to others but its not easy at all to get all " boxes " as precise as that !!! well done ! PS , that hexagon strange window was totally taken from the show " Lost " 😂😂

Love how the wall with all the squares on it came out!
Haha - thank you!
The before and after is almost hard to believe. What a difference, wow!
Thank you! Can’t wait to share the full reveal!

I came to say the same thing. If you don’t miter both pieces then the “length” of the joint faces will never match up.
So are u brad nailing to studs??

Ohh - library wall sounds so fancy! Thanks for the love!

Thank you so much! My parents are seriously the best. So grateful to them for letting me build on their property and in their house. 💓
That's stunning! Adds so much class to any wall! Time to take on the master bedroom wall now!😆
Yess! This makes me so happy!
You really simplified the process and made me feel like I can do it! Great video!!
That turned out so well. I really like the way you adapted to the outlets and window trim. Great detail in the video, and 5 star work.

How about plywood? Is it a better choice?
@@bradfung I would use primed pine for this project.
OMG you just made me feel so human.....lmao " so why did I agree to start this project?" love this.
Oh my god..
So much work ! But great job. You have stamina girl 👧!
You did an awesome job, what color paint did you choose
