A painter friend of mine showed me a caulking trick that utilizes the some of the tips used in this video. This was done after walls were painted and white painted baseboards installed. As in the video, you cut a small angle cut on tip (except you use needle nose pliers and pinch the tip to make the opening smaller). Then you place and angle the gun on the baseboard and your wet finger at the tip of the gun. You then squeeze the trigger and drag the gun along the baseboard with your finger at a quick space that covers around 2 - 3ft. Due to the small opening and your finger running with the gun , it lays down the caulk in one motion. You may have to rerun areas if there are gaps that were not completely filled. Try it.
I like my caulking painted so I clean & caulk first, paint last because just after a few years of exposure the caulking turns a different color than the paint... especially that Paintable painters caulk. I've been working on houses since the late 60s.
I have been Caulking awhile now, and the way you explain in such detail and Patience. I learned things about caulking I never knew. Thank you for the best video yet. Please donn't stop sharing.
This is really helpful. I'm putting new base board down in our bathroom and I followed your instructions and it worked great. I think the big one that helped was the tip to run a small amount, and then do it again if needed to fill larger gaps. I had some pretty big gaps at times, but now using your approach it isn't a mess and it all looks so clean and profession. Thanks again for the great video.
I need to point out the gap from the floor to the baseboard is a great opening for insects to invade your house from inside the walls. Fill those gaps with caulking as well as any gaps in electrical and plumbing coming through the walls, and you will see far less insects in your house.
The gap between base and floor should have quarter round or shoe moulding which is flexible enough to conform to irregular gaps along the bottom of base. paint quarter round prior to installation. Then caulk crack between base and quarter round leaving the floor uncaulked for expansion and contraction. Been out of the business for a while and will pick up this Dap stretch and try it out.
You are definitely the best caulking video I have watched. I'm fixing up my 50 year mobile retirement home, what a mess in the master I created. Will be using your tips everywhere else. Thank you
Been on a roll with your videos. Have me feeling like Handy Manny with everything I have done to my home without a contractor...LOL. Thanks for the videos.
Great video, a few additional tips, if you are doing a lot of caulking, like filling gaps in a shed, etc...buy a powered caulker, caulking a lot is tough on the hands. Instead of using caulk caps, if you are wearing nitrile gloves while caulking, at the end pull off the pinky finger, put it over the cap and wrap it with a little masking tape.
You've never seen my husband caulk! He would've done that free-hand, perfectly. I have never seen someone caulk like my husband. He makes it look so easy! Then I try to do it! 😂😂😂
Nice video…. To address the excess calking problem 11:00 …. I suggest ( IF I make that mistake) …. Instead of running your finger the whole length and collecting a bunch of caulk ,,, I start from the middle and do half in one direction (moving away) then the opposite side (moving the opposite way). This way I pick up less calk and carry the excess caulk to finish more length. If it was a really big line you could do it 3 equal swipes (middle last) … this will prevent caulk from laying high and low and save the mess/waste. It happens
One day I advised a coworker to wet his finger and run his finger to clean up the goop and he thought I was kidding. So not taking my advise my coworker's chalking on the trimwork turned out really sloppy and the next day our supervisor was pretty upset. Finish work has to look professional for all you newbies. Takes practice to get good at chalking. I usually use a nail to plug up the opening in the chaulk. Using a moist rag is helpful in wiping off the access. A good chaulk job makes a good impression on you. You don't want to get bad impression on these finish work. Good chaulk work keeps the bugs out of the crevices of baseboards and trimwork.
Im a first time home buyer and this most definitely came in handy as now I have to start doing stuff on my own as a single female this video made it less intimidating ❤
There’s Absolutely nothing professional about anything that this clueless kid is doing wet tooling taping finger in the caulk lick and stick flim flam cobbers
A contractor friend of mine showed me (a rank amateur) a little trick. Put blue tape on the wall at exactly the height of the baseboard. 2 or 3 foot sections at a time. Apply the caulk, do the finger thing, clean off the base board with a damp rag and immediately remove the blue tape. Do not let the caulk dry. IT CAME OUT BEAUTIFUL. There are actually videos on that now. Being 75, I learned that 20 years before YT. Works like a charm.
@@jmackinjersey1 - I only did the baseboard in my house once. Came out perfect. Why would I want to learn how to do it your way when I never have to do it again?
@@jmackinjersey1 you should ALWAYS run a finger across your bead. Too many reasons as to why to list. If you don’t know them then I’m sure your jobs aren’t neat and/or don’t last for years.
O K another one, wet tooling taping and finger in the caulk are all things that would get me fired immediately when I worked as a caulker. All the clueless videos of so many calling themselves pros and experts and haven’t the first clue about what Real caulking is
Thanks, I've been chaulking for years, I had no idea about the difference between silicon and latex chaulk. That explains a lot of issues over the years. Thanks again.
I had to use masking tape on my bath because I just couldn't get it. I spent a long time masking it perfectly. It looks really nice. Definitely worth the effort.
I appreciate that you don’t edit out all of your little mistakes, I know you’ve edited out some like when you pushed the poker into the caulk tube, but we ALL make these tiny little mistakes and it’s good to remember that
I make all of the DAP and GE silicone/caulk. You can paint clear but it has to be a certain type. The GE shown here is 6500 material. Its not paintable. 7091 and 3330 can be clear and it is paintable. Also not all colored silicone and caulk is paintable. It depends on the type of pigment added to it. Always refer to the tube on whether you can paint it or not.
Good tips. In place of caulking caps, I like to use blue tape since I already have it. The thicker the width of the tape, the better. Just fold a piece over the tip and press all the rest of the tape together to eliminate any air gaps.
That all sounds good, but after 40 years caulking gaps and puttying holes, I've found a simple galvanized finishing screw works simply the best. Screw it and forget it.
Just use Tuck Tape to cap any adhesive/silicone bottles. It seals out air. A whole roll will last you a lifetime. I've let tubes sit for months like this and they work perfect with no dried chunks.
Like this guy, I have done a lot of caulking. However, I have never seen the utility of angling the tip. In my experience, it acts as a liability because you are trying to maintain the angle of the tip on the surface. A small hole, the gun held at the right angle and skill at applying the right pressure at the trigger works great. I can apply a nice smooth bead of caulk about as fast as I can walk if the job is such that I can do it upright. I finish out the caulk with a wet rag and my finger much as he does.
A square cut tip held perpendicular does make a nice bead along base and in glazing windows. I like his technique of starting at the corner. Otherwise I push the bead ahead of the tube into the corner.
Good video When you use a damp rag to wipe the caulk, you should roll the cloth like a ball ) to wipe, if it's flat it can pull the caulking out. DIYers don't use 🐸 tape it's the most expensive tape they make, the blue is pricey enough, the thinner the cheaper too, you don't need inch n quarter wide tape, 1/2 inch will do.
I actually laughed when you said "caulking journey" because over several decades, mine has been a bit bumpy :-). Also had no idea there was even such a thing as a dripless caulking gun so thanks for that link - just ordered, and also subscribed to your channel - great stuff.
Hi Ellie! Thank you so much for the love and support! Caulking is tricky but will get better with a little bit of practice over time 👍🏽😊. I hope you have a great weekend my friend!
Do you have a “how to remove caulking from kitchen counter near the sink and/or around the sink”? The previous owner of our house did a caulking disaster and I don’t want to ruin my granite countertop because it’s all over my granite countertops and subway tiles on the wall.
@FixThisHouse Hi, regarding the caulk caps (near the end of the video) for reusing caulking tubes. They don't work very well. Over the years I've tried many methods (including nails) and products but they all don't work well. Recently I found something that works every time, and it's free: Clean the tip of the tube, apply a piece of electrician's putty (or any putty that doesn't dry out) over the tip and mold it over the tip to prevent any air from entering the tip. You can also apply some hot glue (if you have it) over the tip. This trick has worked every single time without any gunks of caulking plugging the tip.
Thank you so much! This is superb information and so timely as I was wondering how I was going to make my finished product not look amateurish! Can't wait to get stuck in to it. 😃
Thank you for share with this ol gal! You always make is look so easy. I did learn a lot from this post. 1 I won’t forget, take your time🙌🏼💯I need to do that! Oh and the human that said there was to much room from the floor to the baseboard. I would think it would be preference. Also, if you spray your house once a month for insects, it shouldn’t be a problem…
Excellent video! You’re patient and clear. Great demonstration. I followed everything you said (my first time doing crown molding 🤦🏼♀️). Your tips made my work look so much better! Thank you!
My brother taught me to use clear rubbing alcohol on your finger so the caulk will not stick to your finger. It really works! Thanks for your tips to perfectly polish the caulking method!
Very useful tips here. One correction. Silicone caulk does come in a paintable and a non-paintable version. ONLY USE GE brand and don’t be cheap. Always go with their newest one, the best, most expensive, GE Supreme as of now. They last years and years if applied properly. Put it like this. I still have the first application on an exterior storm door for about 15 years and no sign of wear. Another tip which he shows but doesn’t state is alway run you finger along the caulk in one direction, then the other, then I even run it a third time so I can continue in the same direction I applied it. Why? Mainly because you will force the caulk deeper into crevices and prevent any air bubbles. Plus it give it a stronger hold and a nice smooth finish without having excess caulk left behind. Downfall to this is I do waste more caulk than he did but I am very cautious not to apply too much. I never have to apply a second coat of caulk. That tip is good as gold. Dipping your finger into rubbing alcohol (fill a small paper cup), shake any excess off, and swipe. That prevents caulk from sticking to your finger and help give you caulk a nice smooth line. Rip up some paper towels to wipe excess caulk from your finger, toss in the trash, and continue as I explained. These are tips I picked up on from years of doing this and without tooting my own horn, I’m pretty dang good at it. TOOT!!! TOOT!!!
You’re good at what?? Flim flam wet tooling and finger fucking the caulk There’s at least 3 different things that this clueless guy is doing that would get you fired immediately by a few of the caulking companies that I used to work for
What about caulk at the floor? There are big gaps. Can you do the bottom of the baseboard where it meets the floor? Thank you. You’re very easy to understand. 👍🏻😊
A grout sponge and a 1/4 full bucket of water works wonders to take off excess from the trim and the wall, leaving you a nice clean line without ruining a bunch of rags or the money on baby wipes!
Don't you normally caulk before you paint? I do, because it cuts-in better and leaves a cleaner line. I will even caulk the ceiling line too if the texture is heavy.
Two additional tips: 1) Release your gun pressure tab behind the trigger mechanism after each pass and before you clean the tip. This will stop the caulk from coming out even when not applying the trigger. 2) Instead of caulk caps to see a partially used canister, you can use an electrical wire nut. An additional way is to use a ziploc sandwich back placed upside down over the tip and hold it there with a rubber band or hair tie.
From your good video I learned there are two types of caulking, however I had already just used non paintable SILCONE on some of my trim and baseboards. No, I’m wondering what I’m going to do because I do need to paint over that caulking what are my choices?
You're a pro after my own heart, technique and cost efficiency: save caulk - less waste, less clean up. I love to caulk. Now I can caulk even better when I reinstall baseboards on my new hardwood floors😊. Btw, my beloved dad taught me to use a long clean nail to cap the hole on an open tube. It works!

Hi, regarding the caulk caps (near the end of the video) for reusing caulking tubes.

I live for videos like this. Cheers 👍
Great technique man!!! Thanks for the very informative and helpful video!!!!
Thank you so much! I’m glad I could be of help! 👍🏽🙏🏽😊
Flim flam wet tooling taping and finger fucken the caulk Yep great technique
Thank-you mate, always useful to watch great videos on how to.
Helpful video - even for an old guy like me.
Woohoo! Thank you! You are a lifesaver 🎉
You are a good teacher!
Didn’t know about the caps!!! Thanks!
Those caulk caps are game changers! 👍🏽😊🙏🏽
From your good video I learned there are two types of caulking, however I had already just used non paintable SILCONE on some of my trim and baseboards. No, I’m wondering what I’m going to do because I do need to paint over that caulking what are my choices?
Excellent advise. Thank you
You are great, simply amazing
I have to say I never knew about the rubber caps that's pretty cool to know
You're a pro after my own heart, technique and cost efficiency: save caulk - less waste, less clean up. I love to caulk. Now I can caulk even better when I reinstall baseboards on my new hardwood floors😊. Btw, my beloved dad taught me to use a long clean nail to cap the hole on an open tube. It works!
None of these many caulking videos is even remotely close to the real caulking business They are All cob job wet tool finger fucken lick and stick taping and a bunch of other things that would get a real caulker fired
Thank You So Much. Very helpful. I agree with you on taping.
Great video! Can you recommend how to gently remove this type of caulking ? Last year I put around the windows and now I don’t know how to remove it. I should have use another type of caulking. Thank you.
