this guy is the bob ross of finish carpentry minus the happy trees. his voice is golden.
Ha! Thank you? I grew up watching Bob Ross. He was great. I may need to throw in a "happy little something" in an upcoming video.
that voice is silky smooth, he should start recording himself reading children's books!
That would be a good gig.
I swear between the voice and the workmanship its like man therapy...I'm gonna put it on when I take a nap HAHAHHA!
I'll take that. Thank you!
Cool video. Never thought I'd sit through a 25min video of a room renovation, but you're tips and insight are fantastic. Love your sense of humour too. Shame you didn't have a kumiko panel included!
Thank you. Well I'm glad you did. Quick heads up. I have 4 furniture pieces planned for this room, one of which is a floor standing lamp with some kumiko. I probably won't get to that for a while, but when I do I'll make a video.
Niiiiiiice. I look forward to it. Thanks for the content, Mike.
Whenever one of your clients tell you, that your prices are high. Please send him/her the link of this video!
Thank you Nikos. Honestly, that was the reason I started this RUclips channel. I wanted something more than pictures and references to show my clients.
A fine example, that great work is all about the details you don't see when the project is finished.
I have a saying...….Cheap work ain't good and good work ain't cheap!
Nikos DIY Very true. People need to get paid.

Love your style. All of it - video, voice, woodworking, life lessons, family. Very endearing and watchable. Thank you for putting in a huge effort to make these special.
Thank you for the kind words.
Again, this is just meticulous, detailed, STELLAR work - coupled with a matter-of-fact style of presentation.
This too, was a fantastic video!
Thank you very much Mark.
You are the definition of a craftsman. Your attention to detail is amazing. And then way you present is great. I find myself entranced the same way I was by Norm Abram and the New Yankee Workshop in my 20's.
Thanks for sharing your work and talent.
I grew up watching reruns of Norm. This would have been years before I ever did any woodworking. For some reason I liked the show. Thank you for such a nice compliment.
I’ve been working on our home for years and now getting to the fine finishes. Your video is outstanding. I learned so many nice tips from you. I love your finish work. You are an excellent teacher. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
Outstanding project Mike! Really like the way the room turned out, looks fantastic. Great video, easy to follow along and understand. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you very much.
Mike, as a builder I always pay attention to the trim work. Done right, it is one of the keys to a well received finished home. Your work is absolutely beautiful and very professional. Wish there were more guys like you. Thanks
Thank you. I couldn't agree more, its one of the most important pieces to a nice house.
Gotta say, the respect you have for your audience and the care and creativity that went into this video...well, it’s a breath of fresh air. Thanks for sharing your own project at your own home with us. It came out beautiful.
Thank you very much.
What he said ^
One hell of a “workshop” dang.
Thank you.
Stars in my eyes...You, my friend are a pro and a gentleman. You have a beautiful family and a home to match.
Thank you very much.
Alright there Mike, I can’t remember how many time I’ve watched this particular project. With your workmanship, eye for detail and calm soothing voice it’s my go to chill out video😊. Thanks mike, keep up that quality content, all the best buddy.
Thank you very much Paul.
Wow! Very nice work Mike! I definitely need to keep my wife away from this video or I'll be busy! Thanks for the video!
Thank you Donny. Yup, this one was driven by my lady. She never asks me to build anything, so when she does I'm happy to help.
Or she might do it herself!
@@charlesz8531 ha ha, good one. Like THAT will ever happen. Women just hang around the finish line, don;t you know ANYTHING about women?! Just saying.
Solid work, Mike! The construction adhesive circles is a new one for me, I'll be stealing that one....cheers!
Thank you Andy. Steal away, thats what my channel is all about. After all, it was something I picked up from someone else...
Sharing the knowledge! Love it...
It works great for stainless steel in commercial kitchens too, only we use silicone.
Lovely work, has inspired me to give it a go over here in England so thank you! Love your little helper in the video following daddy's steps!
Thank you.
Hi Mike! Can you speak to the baseboards and rail/header? Looks like maybe a 1/2" thick baseboard, and a 1"x2" rail?
Also what did you use for the door casing? Looks like the same as your stiles perhaps?
Thanks a lot!!!
Baseboards are 1/2" thick x 5" tall. Top rail is 1" thick by 1 1/2" deep. Door casing is 1" thick x 3 1/2" wide. Top cap is 1 1/8" thick by 4 1/4" tall.
I have just binge watched a load of your videos, awesome stuff!
Thanks for the crown moulding tip as well, I always get caught short when doing it myself.
Thank you. Doing crown alone can be a real pain. Happy to hear this helped.
"I sign ALL of my work...I think it's important..." haha!
i have no idea how to do any of this stuff but i'm trying to learn. Took me 2 hours to fix a light bulb fixture and I didn't get electrocuted so ...yea. But his voice is so calming. I could watch him explain stuff for hours. Really informative.
Ha! Thank you.
Looks great. Another excellent project and another excellent video.
Thank you very much!
I assume you got the gray at Sherwin Williams as well. But what color number gray is it? Thanks.
SW 0077 Classic French Gray.
Beautiful work! Loved your narration technique, too, and ESPECIALLY your little helper! Would love to see the room after it was completely decorated - drapes, pictures, etc.
Thank you very much. Have a look at my picture frame video I have a few shots with some decorations in there.
As far as who you look like…I was thinking more Lex Luthor from Smallville. 😂
Ha! I get that one occasionally.
I love how your baby is with you and watching. He has a great teacher.
Thank you. Its a pleasure to have the little guy near me.
Scorpions - Lovedrive - "Coast to Coast" killer tunes dude. That room is the bomb bro! Love your attention to detail and the pride you put into your work.
Thank you very much. We are really happy with the way this turned out. Coast to Coast is a really great song, thats for sure.
The dining room looks really sharp - love the panels.😃👌👏👏👏👏
Thank you.
Sir, you are.the BEST at what you do!!!👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏
Thank you.
The sliding biscuit joint is a great tip. I have never seen that before. Thanks for sharing.I don't understand why you can't get projects done quicker when you have a shop apprentice. :)
Thank you. Ha, the little guy is a welcome distraction.
I thought you was just a regular DIY'er. your a professional, just a one man team i give u credit for taking on the job by yourself but if you was a full DIYER i would have giving you much more credit ......but very good job for a professional. im a 100% DIYer
Thank you.
Love your work and content and personality and everything, so much. I've learned so much from watching all of your videos. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge! Thank your wife and kids too! Side note, I always laugh at "dislikes" on videos and content that is so very clearly helpful and well thought out and produced and positive. The world we live in where negativity is everywhere we turn, i reckon. Any who, thanks again, Mike!
Thank you very much Seth. Dislikes are a part of the game. I'm with you, if someone puts out an honest video with a fair attempt at creating something useful, I really don't know why anyone would give it a thumbs down. Click bait or bait and switch videos, I can understand that.
You also look and sound exactly like the guy from BLACKTAIL STUDIO from Canada makes super awesome tables, furniture for you newly spruced up room, if you’ve got deep pockets lol. Awesome work will look out for more of your projects tc Vic from England..
Thanks.
Love the renovation! I really enjoy watching your little assistant, quite adorable. As well, I appreciate all of the tips you share, I have learned quite a bit from you. Thanks again for the share :)
Thank you very much.
Nice job! You do excellent work.
I've been doing finish carpentry for over 35 yrs. Love it! Haven't done any wainscoting in a while. Doesn't seem to be popular anymore where I'm at, unfortunately. I miss doing it.
Thanks 👍
Love the “Bane” and Apprentice part. Awesome video
Ha! Thank you very much.
Great video. I'm about to embark on a similar project with zero experience. Would not using a backing board be acceptable in terms of looks or fashion? (is it a matter of later home value/appeal, taste and or simplicity?), or should I use backing board under the frames?
No backing board means the drywall will show. I don't think you'd ever get the drywall and wood to look consistent.
This is amazing man, your shop is beautiful and your work is even more so! So meticulous! Thank you
Thank you very much.
Are they actually biscuits? Like would you recommend Rich Tea? Digestives? Or perhaps Hob Nobs?
I like the Hob Nobs personally.
This was so therapeutic to watch. Love the new dining room and your hard work!
Thank you very much.
Did you extend the railing above the wainscoting over the vertical door frames. I didn’t see a closeup. I was wondering why you didn’t trim or angle that trim so it was flush with the door trim.
Thanks for the video. You have a nice shop.
Yes, I did include a shot of that detail at some point in the video. I did that cause I thought it looked neat.
@@MikeFarringtonThanks Mike. I did notice it. You did a fantastic job. It’s cool you signed your work. I do that too and date it for whoever sees it. Keep up the great videos.
I'm watching this with the news on in the background. The Easter Bunny is kicking a couple's ass. Literally. Anyway, phenomenal job on that dining room!!! I'll be referencing this video again and again in a few weeks.
Thank you very much.
You’re funny, I like you 😂. Great work btw looks amazing. I think you nailed the proportions 👌
Thank you very much Darren.
3 Questions...Are you self taught? Do you have any kind of insurance in case you get disabled? That adjustable height table...from what height to what height?
I have taken a few classes as well as worked for other builders. I do not, but I have arrangements. It goes down to just a couple inches all the way up to chest high.
You should consider reading audio books... your voice is amazing.
Thank you very much. A viewer sent me a link a while back, I did a little research. It seemed to me that its one of those things that you make very little money until a big break, then you make pretty good money. I just don't have the time to put an honest effort into it. It does sound like fun, but I don't want to put in a half hearted attempt. Maybe some day.
A natural born golf announcer :-D
I totally agree!
Dude. You got my sub 👌👍. What size ply was used for the wainscoting? Assuming the same material can be used for an accent wall to cover the textured wall.
Thank you. Great to have you onboard. I used 1/8" and 1/2".
Love this video! It felt like I was watching a really good home improvement show. The narration, the shots of a Denver winter. Excellent stuff! The dining room came out amazing. Thanks for posting. Subscribed!
Thank you very much. I appreciate the positive feedback. Stay tuned, I have more in the queue.
Your wife suggested why don't we....... but I only see you working
Hmm. That is a really good point. She's so good, I didn't even realize it was only me working....
@@MikeFarrington if I tell my husband we must do this or that, most of the time he's doing all the work. (we women appreciate you)
Wow...this is beautiful. So professionally done.
Thank you very much.
From shop to Finish product all looks good..
Thank you.
Attention to detail is great man, you don't often see that kind of craftsmanship and the hard work put into projects. Awesome job!
I appreciate that!
You’re a hell of a Carpenter but I’m not really quite sure why you put MDF as a backer especially around the windows everybody knows what MDF does when it retains moisture me personally I would’ve done the exact same thing you’ve done without the MDF because now you have to figure out your trim that has a quarter inch do everything
I could have used plywood, but I'm not really worried about water coming in. If it becomes a problem, I'll just redo it as needed.
Love this! Can't wait to share with my husband! Thank you for including needed / preferred tools as you go!
Thank you for watching.
The shadow in the window? Yoda? Or the son of a biscuit slot'er? Hey, I learned something - thanks for the biscuit slotting trick.
Ha! I shall not reveal the secret.
First time here -OMG - jackpot! I'm subscribing! ^5 Sean sent me. Scorpions: Coast To Coast 1979 LoveDrive! awesome
Skippy, thank you! Great to have you on board. Coast to Coast is a great song. I wondered if anyone would respond to a song recommendation.....
@@MikeFarrington just subscribing. :)
Lovely! Is it necessary to make the backing panels, or can you just use mount the frames on the existing wall? Would save a lot on materials, but there's probably a reason i'm not aware of.
Thank you. The drywall texture would show through with out the paneling. Its way easier for me to install the paneling, vs fix the drywall.
Excellent video, love your work especially the commentary. The end result, just stunning.
Wow, thank you for the very kind words.
Plywood was so much cheaper 5 years ago so sad a average guy with wood talent can barely afford to remodel his home anymore especially when you have mouths to feed and you spend 200 dollars on groceries for barely anything but anyways great job brother definitely have carpentry experience
If you think groceries are expensive, go buy lumber. Holy cow!
Huge improvement in the look of the dining room! I really like it. Picked up some good tips too. Thank you!
Thank you. Happy to hear you liked the results.
Wow looks beautiful of course I am nowhere’s near as good as you are that is probably because you are a professional and I am a novice, but I very much enjoyed watching this 😍
Thank you.
“Biscuits do good”.
Yes, biscuits do good.
I like to chew on them.
I like biscuits as long as they have gravy on them.
Can you come do my bathroom? Lol... I'm about to do something like this but I'm going to attach the wood straight to the wall, not pre-assemble it. Thoughts?
No problem attaching wood to the wall as you go. I do it this way because I prefer to work in my shop vs at the site.
So f jealous of all the equipment you have and that shop good lawd
Thank you.
Omg your workshop! So jealous.
Thank you very much.
Dude you need a tv show!
Thank you. That would be fun.
Maybe asked already. But why can't you just apply the wainscotting to the painted wall. Why do you use the backer board
The surface of the drywall will never look at good as the backer board. With that said, it can be done, it just wouldn't look quite as nice.
Were you actually wearing 1970’s-style radio headphones or were they something more hi-tech?
I'd like to think they are 80s style, but yes I am.
This vid made subscribe. You're such a nice man, and have a beautiful family. Wish you guys the best. 🥰
Thank you so much!!
House for sale is now taken down on Zillow, but it is two homes down from me. Owners died and home was flipped. Home for sale was on internet and shot of DR and LR look darn close to yours as remodeled right down to the furniture. This must be the thing to do now. Looks nice
Thank you.
Awesome work!!!! Thanks for sharing
Thank you. My pleasure.
With paint grade materials, there's no need to cope the joints. Miter's work fine and you can roll the joint up or down a little to make the fit perfect. Easy peasy.
Agreed.
wow,, i find that i have a helpful hint for you, insted of only learning from you, on you work bench with the dog holes, put tall enough dogs to back your frame in against them, and possibly a few along the side, clamp it in place , and but your pannel up against those same dogs and place your pannel without worrying about glue getting in unwanted places
Thank you.
love your work. I enjoyed watching your video. Your dining room is amazing.
Thank you so much!
Ok I’m trying to be a DIY. But no way is this for a beginner . But I loved the video. Makes you have a more respect for the pros and cost to do the work.
Thank you.
i would feel better in that room if i did the work in there it or knew the person that did! That's a pro job! So all the wainscoting is MDF? oh ya, awesome work!
Thank you. Pretty much all MDF, only a few pieces of poplar.
More like lex luthor from smallville...
But your work is always exceptional...
Thank you. The guy at my local sandwich shop calls me lex.
Hi. I would love to get your opinion on smoothing textures walls. I have a new home and im not a fan of the orange peel texture walls. I had two different contractors give me their opinion. One said he would sand all the walls and then skim coat any areas that are uneven. Another said he would skim coat all the walls then sand them. Is one recommended over the other?
I like the apply mud, then sand. I don't know that there is a better way or not, that's just how I do it.
Hi. Mike, where did you purchase the large 1/8" MDF panels? Having trouble finding it in those dimensions. Thanks.
Any professional plywood dealer will have it. It will not be at the large box stores. Here in Denver, I use Paxton lumber.
Any reason why you don't make your own switch / outlet face plates? I love watching your videos, so skilled and detail oriented.
Too much work relative to the benefit offered. My house needs lots of work, I'm trying to save time and money where ever I can.
Coast to coast is my best scorpions song after hurricane..
I will subscribe because your nice work and because the scorpions
Nice! Great to have you onboard.
I think you resemble Lex Luthor from Smallville
Thaaaaaaats who I was trying to think of!! Nailed it!
The kid at the sandwich shop I go to calls me Lex. Ha! Maybe I could stunt double for him.
Great project and great work. Dis you use the Amana Tool MR0110 ?
Yes.
Wow. Looks amazing. Thqnks for the step by step instructions with the tips.
Thank you.
I am looking forward to more of your work. I enjoy learning nd you are an awesome instructor. Including your family, especially your darling son is wonderful. He will learn from a master. Your dining room came out so wonderful. Looking forward to see what else you do to your home. Way cool beyond words is your workshop. Love all the tools you have. My father was a Special Effects Man for the studios in California. Wish I had spent more time watching him in his shop. Be good to your sweet boy. He's a fortunate little guy.
Thank you very much. I'll have another video out soon.
You remind me of Michael Rosenbaum's Lex Luther from Smallville
Ha! The guy who works at the sandwich shop near me calls me Lex.
Excellent tutorial on this subject!!! Thanks for sharing>
Glad it was helpful!
I believe that yo are a liar that black table you said that you had done for a costomer and it turns out you have there in your dining room. It seems that the bisquests are hurting youy.
Do I also have a time machine? The dining room project was like 6 months before the table, plus that table I built was a full 3 feet longer than the one in my dining room. I don't like being called a liar, now go to your room and think about what you've done...
Beautiful work. If you were in N. California, I'd call you tomorrow for a quote.
Thanks Jim.
What paint color gray did you use for this project Plz? Thank you
It is Classic French Gray from Sherwin Williams.
Why did you not building the framing on the wall itself instead of making panels?
I can build to a higher standard if its on my bench. Working on the floor beats the stuffing out of my knees and back. The end product tends to suffer a little as a result.
Hey Mike. Last night I watched you for about 4 hours - not in a creepy way - you're just a very easy watch, and amusing. Your workshop is vast... as is your tool collection! You're obviously highly skilled. But... if you don't mind a criticism, and if you do you'd have to fly 1000s of miles across the Atlantic to punch me, I do find your furniture design a bit 'Ikea' looking. Which given your skills is a shame. I guess your 'style' of furniture is Shaker-ish - might be worth getting a Shaker furniture book to see their proportions and details? Feel free to reply with a FO! But, like I say, it looks like you could make anything!
Oh... one bit I watched that made me turn the air blue was when you used the Blum drawer front adjuster... WTAF!? I didn't even know they existed. I've just fitted a ton of drawer fronts with ye olde double sided tape. Those things are genius and so much easier.
Anyway, forgive me, great videos and music recco's... and an edibly cute Workshop Assitant!
I would take that as a compliment. Ikea hires the greatest design minds in the world. They design things that appeal to the widest audience. When I attach things to our house, I want them to be fairly plain, some day we will sell this house. When it comes to furniture, I have a huge problem with furniture that draws too much attention. I would want my furniture to sit next to other furniture and not scream to loud. Hope that makes sense.
Totally does Mike. Your philosophy is the same as the Shakers. All I’m saying is check them out - masters of simple and function.
You look like former Major League Baseball pitcher, Mike Basick.
I'll look him up.
Were you using all plywood?
Combination of MDF and solid wood.
Job beautifully done. The Voice os very calming.
Thank you.
If I were you Id think about firing that assistant of yours. He's a bit of a liability lol.
Ha! I think you're right.
What!?!?! No coffered ceiling? Are you going half ast on us, lol?
Ha! I would love to do that, but the ceiling is too short.
Every thing about this video was beautifully done. Great job.
Thank you very much.
I'm actually going to put this to test sometime next month..thanks again 4 the video and idea
Thank you. Good luck with your project.
Stunning craftsmanship.
Thank you very much.
What kind of primer/paint do you use? Do you like oil based???
I use a shellac based primer and I like Cabinet Coat for paint. I don't use oil based paints unless there is a good reason.
It looks great you did a wonderful job happy wife happy life
Thank you.
that is beautiful work,,, but at the end, the shot from outside of the dining room,,the hallway walls now look like they need some paint,,i think you just made more work for yourself,,(my favorite look is grey and white, or grey and black, or grey and grey, lol, so i'm probably biased)
We work on our house one room at a time. At some point the whole house will be done.
@@MikeFarrington it dosen't look bad, but it almost looked like you opened a new window on the PC, i think it was just the color
