The best thing to do, I think, is to go silent yourself. Don't answer the phone, don't text, email, call, or speak. Sssiiillleeennnccceee!

I did this when I filed for divorce for almost a month. He started talking to me once he received the divorce papers. He had the audacity telling me he gave me time to get over my anger after her manhandled me and was caught being with a younger woman. Narcs never take accountability.

I so wish I knew this information before now. During the silent treatment, I cried, I apologized....

With the last silent treatment that happened months before I finally told him I was done and filing divorce, here are some of my tricks when I knew I needed to focus on myself and not seek his attention anymore, ever again:
Go out and get coffee by myself without saying anything (dress up and do hair/makeup nice as a bonus)
    Work out
    Listen to worship music
Make plans with friends, sister, mom
Leave the house without him as much as possible and start getting used to being on my own

When my narc decides to give me the silent treatment, it's the blissful quietness that I embrace. Otherwise, he's constantly yakking at me, whining at me, or telling me everything I'm doing wrong when he's home.

My former husband did this all the time. At first, I would say, what did I do this time? After a couple years, I just ignored him. Marriage obviously died. Divorced last year. David is correct, I moved and never missed him. I felt freedom.

The feeling of freedom is incomparable. So much peace followed and I know I made the right decision. Good for you for getting out of bondage!

I am in a new job that I need to hv 12 months in before I can transfer out of this Small town and get away from hi. I moved into a condo 2 weeks ago. I am praying for a quick escape from this small, dead end town & the Hell away from every seeing or hearing him or about him again.

    Dr. Clarke,
This is really great, and I wish I had awakened decades ago.
I probably spent 40 of the 47 years in a silent treatment. I was the one who went silent at the end, and I'm so grateful to the Lord for opening the gates of Hell and for the peace, sanity, and optimism I now have. And of course, for professionals like you who graciously educate and empower this bittersweet community.
When a victim of narcissistic abuse finally leaves to save themselves, and no other reason, like another relationship, etc., then I believe they will never return.
I pray daily for the people enduring this insidious disorder and abuse. The pain and process of divorce, especially with the Lord fighting for you, is easier than the daily battle with these relationships.
    God Bless All.

I was my husband's co-worker for 7 years before I became his wife. I knew nothing about narcissism. I remember one ocassion at the job he stoped talking to me for a month, I never knew why. I am sorry to say I dated him anyways! Now we are separated because I left, not divorced yet and he is giving me the I am so hurt silent treatment. I pray for the day I do not care anymore.

be strong , I’m in the same position as you, marriage for 25 years, silent treatment without any reason no matter I was helped him for handling the situations, bills, make our life easier, there is NO appreciation at all even he love to put me down in front of others. At the beginning of our first dating, I was thinking he just lack of manners and zero attitude according of who is his parents, but after too much sacrifices and unusual things happened, I do believe that narcissist people has link connections with mental illness, genes, bad role models. Now I’m still struggling to awake from my nightmares, facing the reality, I know it’s too late, but I believe that God is fair. Soon or later he will have justices. My power now are my sons, God & positive friends.

They NEVER take responsibility. It's sickening. I wonder why they don't get caught at that anywhere else, at their job, etc. That will surely discredit them.

Dr. David, I want to start by thanking you for your videos.
I’m wondering if you can you address children who have picked up traits from a Narc parent? My ex husband had a big influence on my oldest who is almost 19. We went no contact with my ex after he left. So he hasn’t seen his dad or heard from him in over two years. My son is very defiant, started giving me the silent treatment, tells me he doesn’t trust me, won’t finish Highschool, gives excuses for not getting a job and finishing school sayings it’s my fault because he says I’m nagging him. I’m at my wits end. I see the gas lighting and manipulation from a mile away after dealing with his dad for over 24 years.

Hi if you may allow me to suggest ..it’s that your child’s subconscious is acting like a parent you must tell your child firmly and clearly this and he’ll realise because he’ll understand why he is doing this ..

😂😂😂well he did the silent treatment and it’s been over ten years and counting, I walk around talking to everyone but him , laughing and enjoying other people conversations, no sex no emotions no nothing,he goes around town trying to find dirt on me, so one day he came home and said that’s why you had a baby from a married man 😂😂😂😂 I told him I hope that he was married because I was married to him 😂😂 , every day he comes up with something STUPID 😂😂one day I asked him did he feed the cats 🐈 he told me to ask the cat so I just kept walking, so when I talk to my friends or family and I know he’s sitting near I would tell them to ask the cat 🐈 and we laugh 😂 so hard I know that he’s going crazy 😜 because he meant to hurt me with his words so I look at the humor in it and I continue to say it whenever he’s around and I know that he’s sorry he said that 😂😂😂😂laughing in Miami
