    I have pulled dead,
    mangled bodies from cars. I have lied to people as they were dying. I said you are going to be fine as I held their hand and watched the life fade out. I have held dying babies. Bought lunch for people who were mentally ill and haven't eaten in a while. I have had people try to stab me. Fought with men trying to shoot me. Ben attacked by women who have had the shit kicked out of them by their husband as I was arresting him. I have held towels on bullet wounds. Done CPR when I knew it wouldn't help just to make family members feel better. I have torn down doors, fought in drug houses. Chased fugitives though the woods. I have been in high speed car chases. Foot chases across an interstate during rush hour traffic. I have been in crashes. Been squeezing the trigger about to kill a man when they came to their senses and stopped. Waded through large angry crowds by myself. Drove like a mad man to help a fellow officer. Let little kids who don't have much sit in my patrol car and pretend they are a cop for their birthday. I have taken a lot of people to jail. Given many breaks. Prayed for people I don't even know. Yes and at times I have been violent when I had to be. I have been kind when I could. I admit I have drove to some dark place and cried by myself when I was overwhelmed. I have missed Christmas and other holidays more than I wanted too. Every cop I know has done all these things and more for lousy pay, suckie hours and a short life expectancy. We don't want your pity, I don't care for your respect. Just let us do our jobs without killing us.

    I can relate to you around the same type of scenario. I was 21 years old and I was a medic we were called to police shooting call. Typically somebody was shot either a suspect or an officer. We were told not to run code. So pretty much somebody was dead. When we arrived on scene there was blankets and barriers in place. Not the first time but it was my last. More or less it was a murder suicide. The woman 38 the 3 children 8 months 2 years and 4 years. The male 41. He had shot each victim execution style other than the baby he shot her in the face with a 12 gauge shotgun. That was the worst thing I had ever seen in my life. I did my job and when we were cleared I removed my uniform and walked home from the scene. When I got home I grabbed my kids and held them with me and I cried. I just couldn't wrap my head around what it would take for a person to do something like that.

    Poor baby. She may have recovered physically but mentally she needs a life time of help.
    Thanks for sharing. My ex-fiance was a police officer before he got promoted to detective in a small town here in Texas.
    I used to do ride-alongs with him and a couple of the other officers all the time. This was many years ago in the early 80s. I was the captain of the Explorer post and we actually had an office cubicle back in the back by the police officers. One night I was in there late and there were a couple of the officers in the back and they got a DV call. They asked if I wanted to go and I did so I hopped in with my fiance. On the way there everybody was on the private Channel talking about how they knew this couple and how they were always fighting and everything and basically they were relaxed. However when we got there, as I was walking up to the door behind them. This one officer came out of the door and yelled for me to go back to the car. So I obviously went. As soon as I turn to go back to the car he began throwing up. Found out that this normal every week DV call that they received wasn't so normal this time. The guy had literally blew his wife's head off. I won't go into the gory details of the photos that I saw but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. That was just before I started Police Academy back in 1984. And I never ever forgot that. I don't think I ever will.

    Stories like this can make you second guess about becoming an officer or any first responder, but it also shows us that we need people who can overcome this. Praise to all who work in these types of fields. Scary and rewarding at the same time.

      It does seem like it would deter people,but I really love this line of work,I know that I either help people,help the community or I can console the people who suffer losses.It just eats away at me every time somebody I respond to dies,its like why wasn't I faster or how could I have stopped this.

    Former military, former EMT. Your remark about smelling the iron in the blood struck a nerve. I don't know whether my last memory of a smell will be that or the smell of a human body in the early stages of decomposition.

    WOW. Been retired coming on 7 years, watching this has bought a tear to my eye and frankly a few memories that should stay hidden away in the deep dark recesses of my mind, ones that appear only in nightmares (My two ex-wives both wondered why I shouted in my sleep) or when really drunk with mates I served with. John FOLSOM below nailed it. I was never concerned about my personal safety until after, too busy doing the job, it's when I got home, I'd sit in my car heartbroken until I could go in, say I had a good day to the misses and cuddle my my kids without anyone realising I was in a very dark and scary place, I just couldn't lay it on them. Here's the rub, I was a Police Officer in London (England) and I recognised the story, this could've be anywhere in the world, we are all brothers. Keep safe.

    I was in the Navy back in the mid 80s and we did a joint tour with the Coast Guard to stop and seize any drug runners, I was on the 50 cal (we were a small ship) when we noticed a flashy speed boat just haulin tail, we started to give chase but it was obvious that he could outrun us no prob.. now our blood was pumping already as we were told that we could expect gun fire at any moment.. and sure enough, he stopped running, turned and started to come at us, shooting his pistol... could have been a 9mm.. not sure, my Captain said "Oh he is NOT shooting that pea shooter at us... Gunner take him out!" now I KNOW what the Captain meant was to disable to boat, but my nerves were so on edge that within 5 shots I had done a head shot... to this day I can still "see" that moment his head disappeared in slow motion...
    I was told by all sorts of people including my Captain that I was justified in taking his life, but it still (34 years later) bothers me.. when we pulled up to the boat and they fished his body out of the water he had SO MUCH Coke taped to his chest it was unreal... so I think I helped save a couple kids that day.. but it still haunts me, I still have nightmares of that moment.. waking up with heavy breathing and cold sweat, so I can totally understand where you are coming from.

      Just a question out of curiosity, this smell that you speak of, does it only occur when theirs large amounts of blood, or could you still smell it if you cut your self and was only bleeding a little from your body?

    • @austinkazmierski9607
      @austinkazmierski9607 6 лет назад

      Non Stop the smell comes from larger than normal amounts. Makes you think “dang, there really that much in there”?! The iron smell is rough for sure just because of what it is, but the dead guy that’s been marinating for a week or two is worse in my opinion. It’s a smell that you can’t shake for sure!

    • @Benson_aka_devils_advocate_88
      @Benson_aka_devils_advocate_88 6 лет назад +2

      Like Austin said, it takes what seems like a lot of it to get that smell. It takes more than a flesh wound too, it seems.
      But.... when a bodies been marinating for a while you know it's going to be bad. Worse one I experienced was in a van. He had started to leak he was so bloated. When the MA moved him he popped. That smell covered the entire parking lot. This was also in Phx, AZ in the middle of the summer. I couldn't eat till the next day...
