I am not a plumber, been cleaning mine for over 5 years never had a problem anyone with a bit of common sense could do it.
Common sense is a very rare commodity in the world.
Did u do it as he said or was there more to it as other comments have suggested.
Haha. True.
Think it's a man thing. I just tried maybe I didn't close off the valves properly bloody water everywhere. Fed up now. Saw the man do it once but can't remember. It's also located right up against the boiler. ** sigh ** suppose will have to call someone in. Thought I'd have a bash but I failed.
It's easy for anyone to do.
I never once cleaned the seal or added silicone lubricant to the seal and I've never once had a leak. So that extra step is unnecessary and only puts people off doing anything. People should just go ahead and clean the filter as it's easy.
The last step which is not in the video is to slightly undo the nut at the top of the filter to let air out once you put the filter back in place so you don't end up with air in your system. after cleaning the filter.
And then tighten again after?
@@beneaton91nexus yes I believe so
Sediment collects into filter body, so it can be best to remove the filter body from the valves and flush out the whole thing. Don't forget to vent the filter after refitting and opening the valves.
Thank you mate for sharing your experience. God bless.
Really helpful video. I'd assumed the small spanner was for the nut at the bottom of the unit (which it does fit). Turning off the water supply into and out of the unit definitely makes a lot more sense! I have made sure to note your advice to definitely not attempt this task myself.
Cheers buddy, just followed your procedure and it went well. Will keep an eye for leaks now for a few days
You said that vaseline would do as an alternative to silicone sealant but vaseline is a petroleum product which can damage seals and SHOULD NOT be used on plumbing joints The only suitable lubricant for such seals is silicone lubricant!
Great easy to follow video. Thanks
Thanks! This video was very helpful 👏
Just watched this as had one installed with a new boiler last September. I want to drain system soon to change rad valves so think I'll clan the filter. But it is a Bosch filter. Looks like the one that you have but is it the same? I have the tools left by the installer. I'll put new inhibitor in through the filter.
Excellent video. Followed to a tee.
I go around cleaning magnatite out of kitchen sink P trap, its lucrative!
Best clean it in a black bucket outside and tip rubbish down drain - in the street preferably
We've got a vokera magnetic filter. It kind of looks the same but it isn't. There is a pressure release valve at the bottom and i don't know there is a tool for that. The manufacturer's instruction manual is really poor as their diagrams do not show where the pressure release valve is or how to undo it. I can guess where it is and it's probably right but we still don't have a tool for this valve. But anyway I really liked your video and you really made me feel like I could do it until i saw that whilst ours looks like yours but actually it isn't quite.
Just a word of warning, some pipes to the magnaclean aren't horizontal like yours are, therefore the tap needs to be horizontal and not vertical. But it's just like a water stop valve.
Our one is exactly as you stated, the vertical alignment
Thanks for that.
so does that mean there is no need to replace the entire magnet and you can just keep cleaning it?
correct..
How mucH MC1+ fluid do u put in?
Now that was easy explain thanks but don’t have to bleed the filter?
Alas my valves are badly and tightly fitted, managed to turn them both to off but a drip or 2 came out. So panic stations and turned them off. Thinking I'll just drain down the system a bit and then clean the MagnaCleaner !
Surely you should check the air vent after closing the valves to be sure that they are closed and isolated probably and shouldn’t you have added inhibitor to the system if needed after carrying out a ph test?
Why would u get a leak in the ceiling after?
Do u need to add an inhibitor to the magnaclean.
Another thing he should have done
No if the levels are fine, a quick test would establish if needed
@@billrankin But if the system was drained you would although he only cleaned the filter and lost little water. The filter did not look awful.
Bleed sequence when clean complete: ( as youve said @rogerphelps9939 )
leave the bleed open
Turn Lower valve first open until water comes out of the top bleed
> This ensures that there is no air in the system.
Then open the top valve and you are done.
Hi Mark, the black cap on my filter is proving tricky to loosen. Do you know why that might be and whether it's a case of needing brute force (conscious of your point on damaging pipes). How can I loosen it easily? Thanks for a great vid
Release the pressure by opening the bleed at the top.
Does not look like you cleaned out the non ferrous particle filter at the bottom of the sleeve. You should have also released air out of the filter by using the air bleed the vent at the top.
If you are going to show others how to do thing - you need to get them right yourself. In my opinion you've only half cleaned the Magnaclean. I would not be paying you to clean my Magnaclean. You should look at Adeys own videos to get it right. Also such an easy job to do yourself.
Shilks hi mr happy
Thanks for your clear demonstration. I have 2 questions 1) How often should you clean the Magnaclean? 2) My magnaclean is very close to the ceiling so it looks like any engineer will have to undo the whole unit at the nuts next to the black cut off valves and remove the unit horizontally. Is there any reason why this shouldn't be done?
Thank you for your reply. Cleaning the magnaclean is normally an annual thing with a boiler service. but with a Magnaclean that is picking up very little dirt and you could probably wait a couple of years to clean. See how much dirty is on it next time and decide from there.
If you wish to remove the whole Magnaclean that can be done once the unit is isolated. The Magnaclean professional with the nuts that do up onto the plastic Magnaclean, it is very, very easy to cross thread these. Be especially careful when refitting these, only ever do them up finger tight so you nearly do the entire nut up before using a spanner.
I’ve just fitted one of these it says in the instructions to position the bottom of the magnet cover in direction of the flow I can’t work this out and you don’t mention it should I just leave it I’ve no idea which direction it’s pointed in and after the trauma of fitting it I don’t want to mess. Does the flow come from the top inlet of the Magnaclean ?
Follow the instructions that came with it
Great work Austin Powers
The one before that mark I just don't touch anymore they leak and you can't tighten them via spanner
Did you show how to bleed the filter?
You didn't clean the 2 non magnetic trap chambers at either end of the sleeve and that is where one can find a majority of the debris in some systems! Also, you stress the seal and risk a splash when you neglect to make use of the pressure release screw on the top of the unit prior to unscrewing the cap.
Air release valve. 😲
I got ours serviced by British Gas and it now has a slow leak out the top black lid. It feels like its on very tight. Any ideas what I can do? Dont wanna have to call him back again if its a simple fix
@@stevelondon Sounds like the lid needs to be inspected for either not being tightened enough or dirt around the lid seal which is allowing leakage. If you are not handy with this type of work, you shouldn't feel bad calling BG back as it is their job to make sure it is not leaking before they say the job is finished.
Indeed. He is not very good at following instructions.
Very good, but haven't you just blocked your sink
But make sure the person on youtube giving the instructions carries it out in the right steps and as mentioned undo the nut slightly at the top and release the pressure first before opening the filter lid. see here at 4.30 min mark ruclips.net/video/wDK3e0Sj-mg/видео.html
Why don't they make them (the housing) out of a non ferrous alloy? I.e. Get rid of that rubbish plastic housing which must degrade over time? I would pay more for peace of mind. I am assuming these won't replace the need for a full system flush at say 10 years? But might be useful to offer some protection as they clearly do catch some material from what you have shown.
U look like Austin powers
Leave the seal alone unless you have a spare
way too much silicone used. Vaseline will not work for sealing. You need to release the pressure with a bleed screw at the top before you remove the can lid.
He did not follow the manufacturers instructions.
He failed to open the bleed screw at the top and the drain plug at the bottom.
was there a drain at the bottom. There is on mine but it is a Bosch.
Isolation valves are a big problem on these stupid things
This guy is a prat, that's how you dont clean clean a magnaclean. first close off valves, then depressurise the from top of the cap. Then undo the cap using the spanner provided. Clean of under tap and then replace with a new seal apply grease. If you have adey mk1 you wont have nipple on the bottom of the can. If you have mk2 onwards it will. undo the nipple drain all the water from can. Replace with new seal on the bottom on can and top of lid. Fill the can half way with inhibitor place magnaclean lid back on . And reverse process. Then fire up the system.
First its a straight forward process...then at the end you advise others not to do it themselves?...Hmmmm...
A couple of comments. It is much easier to remove the top if you undo the bleed screw on the top to release the internal pressure in much the same way that releasing the seal either by piercing the lid or using a little gadget makes it much easier to unscrew the lid on a new jar of jam. When everything has been put back together, leave the bleed open and open the lower valve until water comes out of the top. Then screw in the bleed screw. This ensures that there is no air in the system. Then open the top valve and you are done. Use the drain nut at the bottom to drain the unit if you intend to top up the central heating protector.
This ^
In my opinion, this is essential information that should have been included in the video.
Shuld i clean out the dirty water inside n replace with new water?
@@lmr9512if your filter has the plug at the bottom you can completely empty it and even flush it through with a jug of water if you want to get the last of the sediment out.
mine doesnt have tht, its magnafilter professional so i just manually take the water out?@@aaronkidd
You should always use an Allen key to release the pressure first never just crack it in case the system is either flowing from a misaligned valve or the system is over pressured
Is that right on top ? As mine in tight spot difficult to see and can see tiny nut with slot for flathead
I don't think that vaseline is a silicone grease.
This is not how to do it folks!
You need to release the pressure via the bleed screw before undoing the cap
You also need to drain off the canister with the small spanner provided
thirdly ,when you finish you need to bleed of any air via the bleed screw
I noticed he didn’t do any of these!
but like he said it’s easier for people to make mistakes if they don’t know what they’re doing!!
What I am trying to do with my videos is show a professional approach to heating work. And for customer to call a professional.
Yes there are lots of addition bit I could add to the video, as you will know it is very rare any plumbing job is straight forward.
And as I say I do not recommending do this your self.
You and I will be listing and looking for thing which the untrained eye will not see.
I am not trying to become a you-tube sensation or get additional work.
I am just promoting a professional approach to our industry and trying to raise the bar and show customer what they should expect.
I hope you and other heating engineer with support good practise and what I am trying to show.
If you have a better video please add a like to it. But please do not say this video is wrong but maybe say " Follks there are additional thing you can do to make cleaning this easier".
Thanks Mark

naela malik
Which filter do you have and have you isolated the taps on it before you unscrew the top?
You say that you dont recommend people do this job themselves. So why did you make this video? Did you make it for professionals? Because they should already know how to do it ?????
I made this video because I feel it is important for people to know what I am doing when they employ me and also what you should expect your engineer to be doing.
Hope that helps.
What’s the point of this video if you keep saying I don’t recommend you doing this yourself??!!
Should turn the bottom valve on first and use the bleed valve to fill filter to prevent air getting in the symptom. Then turn on the top valve.
cant believe he omitted this
It is NOT good practice to clean these in the customers sink!
I'm not a plumber and I fitted on in 20mins including moving existing pipe work
I then saw the box said can be installed inline in as little as 2 minutes. That annoyed me.
@@benji219 haha! I'm proud of you mate 🤪
Thank you, Mark, for this video. I found it very informative and useful for a lay person.
Excellent vid and very informative .....thanks.
How long roughly do you need to run the central heating system after installing the inhibitor for it to fully circulate?
Thanks for the video, I notice it was the type that doesn't have the drain valve on the bottom, so you obviously couldn't drain it👍
You don't bleed the air before you open the top valve?
On grundfos alpha2 it used to display 90w now its 40w and heating doesnt work properly and magnaclean hasnt been cleaned in a while could this be reason why
Will this sort out my hot water issue basically it gets warm then goes cold again
Mark bellend it's not rocket science.
You rude prick
It is for bell ends
I got ours serviced by British Gas and it now has a slow leak out the top black lid. It feels like its on very tight. Any ideas what I can do? Dont wanna have to call him back again if its a simple fix
And add rust inhibitor !
It's always good idea. Try to use same as is in the system now
Thank you for sharing.
Many of these Filter's have very powerful magnets fitted, and can be dangerous to people with PaceMaker's fitted. Some makers actually give a warning.
You need a rapidly varying magnetic field to affect a pacemaker and it would have to be pretty close to have any effect.
If you did not fit that version of the magnaclean then I always check the slots at the bottom to ensure they are the correct way for the flow direction. Read the manual to find out how to position them
Should i bleed the filter unit when i turn the water back on.
Thanks Mark, very informative!
Magnaclean are shite, Fernox TP1 every time.
Will this be included in an annual boiler check?
Nice video! Where can I buy a seal replacement?
Thank you for your advice god bless
Great video. I’m trying to do mine but I can’t unscrew the lid. I’m using nearly full strength but it’s not budging. Any advice?
Put an extension on your tool? Tube of some suitable metal perhaps as we do in motor mending where a scaffold pole can be useful, not for plumbing though.
thanks for the video, just done mine in 5 minutes
I've got allot of different oils but i never knew you could use Vaseline as a silicon lube
Never use vaseline as a “silicone grease”, vaseline is petroleum based and will actually perish the rubber causing it to leak prematurely.
@@45Camster i have got a food based oil I've read that's ok as its not petroleum based due too obvious reasons..
wondering if the filter is fitted on the flow side of system would this affect the down stairs radiators
Should be, and is recommended by manufacturer to fit on return flow so muck is caught before going through boiler.
Thanks Mark
great demo
Hi I've tried to release the filter but there is so much pressure and water coming out I don't know what to do. The one valve is located in a really awkward position can't tell when closed or open and only turns one way. Have tried in different positions.
You just need to keep trying quarter turns until its isolated. Unless qualified I wouldn't touch it as I've been to plenty of jobs where tenants haven't properly sealed the magnaclean after cleaning it and have forgotten to open the valves back up. Making the boiler unable to fire up
@@baileyhogwood6819 I've had a combi put in now so getting extra cover 2 services will be included in that. Guaranteed for 5 so that's something! Changed from Worcester Green star to Baxi main was cheapest one only one I could afford heard they're good I hope they are.
Hi Mark do you think it would benifit me getting a Magnetic Filter fitted to my boiler it is 7yrs old as are the rads no problems at all at the moment i am just thinking going forward thanks
Adding a magnetic filter at any stage in a heating systems life will give some benefit and will help remove free debris circulating in the system. Unfortunately after 7 years, if your system has a lot of debris in it, it will have already deposited much of that inside the boiler and adding a magnetic filter now won't help with that. Generally always best to add the filter when a new boiler is installed to get maximum benefit.
Agree with the above comment. But having a filter is better than no filter. Fitting one now may still extend the life of your boiler.

Hi Mark, sorry, question not exactly related to cleaning, but... i don't have the keys to my magnaclean, so that it didn't get serviced last time my boiler was. boiler's due another service in november and this time i want the magnaclean done too. plumbing company i used last year said they don't have a key either, so... i've looked at ebay and some sell the key for £2.99 (cheap?) whilst others for £15 (expensive)?? The £2.99 doesn't seem to have the small spanner. Please help as I don't know which one to buy! Thanks.
AL Murgatroyd , make sure it has the same amount of teeth as your unit requires. The small spanner isn’t important as any spanner will do, and I wouldn’t use a plumber that couldn’t provide basic tools
Ideally you should use the purpose made wrench, but in a pinch you can use a chain wrench or similar strap wrench (as used for removing oil filters in cars). Try not to mangle the plastic cover too much (but you'll probably cause some scratching etc with a chain wrench), and make sure to brace the filter body so as not to apply force onto the pipes in and out of the filter (otherwise you're likely to cause a leak).
