When you listen to this as an adult and realize a 15 year old wrote the lyric “you come away with a great little story of a mess a dreamer with the nerve to adore you” 🤯
And people still say she’s mediocre only because they don’t get the lyrics and only know few seconds of shake it off😂 Man at 15 I wasn’t able to write like that
no because debut is always outcasted as her “worst” (she’s never made a bad album) but it’s literally top 5 and i can’t express enough how much i love this album
In rating Taylor's music (something I refuse to do because that's like picking the child you like the most), one must always factor in her age. She wrote these songs at the age of 12 to 15. Name any other artist who has written such quality stuff at such a young age. Not even Paul McCartney did that. One has to go back to guys like Mozart to find quality music written by a child.
@@eileenvb I agree that she got better over time but debut is still one of my favourites. Even tho it's definitely lyrical less complicated than evermore for example, it is so raw and beautiful (and definitely not bad even tho it has one of the first songs she ever written on it and at such a young age). She wasn't afraid to say anything writting those songs just pouring her heart out and finding the most simple things beautiful and exciting. And that's just something I could listen to my whole life (and I will :D).

Tim McGraw male harmony answer. When she made the first demos of her songs for the label, she went to a hole-in-the-wall studio run by a session musician named Nathan Chapman (after all, she was just 16). I think Chapman plays about every instrument ever invented. The label liked the demos, and hooked her up with their "professional producers," people who had already achieved some recognition for producing albums. Taylor didn't like the sound; she went through a couple of them before she convinced Scott Borchetta to let Chapman produce her record. He was her primary producer for the albums before 1989 (She co-produced _all_ her albums after the debut). He is often the male vocalist for the early studio recordings, while her guitarists did the job on her tours. EDIT: He was the first person she promoted from artist to professional producer. Jack Antonoff was the second.
The way she went from "I know you wouldn't have told nobody if I died, died for you" to "All these people think love's for show But I would die for you in secret" HER MIND
A YEAR???? That’s crazy😱 I’m so happy we’ve gone from “I don’t really listen to Taylor Swift” to “Taylor Swift knows I exist!” This is exactly the glow up us early subscribers were hoping for after seeing your first Taylor reaction!!!💖👑
This is a perfect first album. The most surprising thing about this album is its longevity on the billboard 200. He as spent 195 consecutive weeks in the chart (the longest on stay in chart album of the 2000s) (2006 to 2009) and was on the billboard 200 between 2006 and 2014 for a total of 275 weeks.
Cold As You is SO good! The start of her track 5s. The lyric ‘you put up walls and paint them all a shade of gray’ made me think of the lyric ‘you paint dreamscapes on the wall’ from peace !!!
Thank you for this debut appreciation video!! A lot of people overlook debut but it has some really greatly written songs. Mary's Song is one of my all time favorite songs because of the storytelling, and it's amazing how she penned it long before she even wrote drafts of her fictional stories in folklore and evermore. She is a born storyteller.
A Place In This World and The Outside are two of my fave Taylor's songs ever because, for so long, they were the only 2 I completely and fully related to (unlike her love and break-up songs)
Debut is nostalgic (I lived in Nashville from 2005-2019 ages 6-20 so literally grew up with her and had one degree of separation from her multiple times over) to me but It isn’t my first choice especially since I have got older I am just not a country fan Something I also very recently realized is My Tears Ricochet (which is top 3 on folklore for me) is the after to Teardrops on my Guitar which the contrast shows how much the music industry has changed and effected her.
I am so glad you're going through all the albums again. I kinda don't want to admit how many times I have watched your reactions! You are just too perfect
Vibing Alex is best Alex. I also really love "A Place In This World" for 17year old me that song was the main reason I decided to not follow in my parent's footsteps and choose a different major and career path. Super inspirational, the live version of that song is still one of my favorite songs. PS: I wish you would have listening to the non-censored version of this album, Picture To Burn+Teadrops On My Guitar+1 song I'm forgetting are censored (changed "I'll tell mine you are gay" to" you won't mind if I say" and" just so damn funny" to "just so funny").
Yes, I own that version and I never liked that Taylor got forced to self-censor. Just like it happened with her Anti-Hero music video and the part with the scale and the word fat.
One of my favorite lyrical parallels in her songs is "I know you wouldn't have told nobody if I died for you" in Cold As You and "all these people think love's for show but I would die for you in secret" in Peace. Her lyricism is just 😙🤌
and in the demo it says "my wifebeater wearing daddy with his new automatic would let you know how sorry you'll be" :D maybe I messed up a little bit but it's definitely along these lines
Debut doesn’t get enough love. Songs like teardrops on my guitar, cold as you, tied together with a smile, our song, picture to burn, should’ve said no, the outside, stay beautiful, omg they’re all actually so good and so underrated
Alex, your experience has been one of my favorites to witness. You broke my heart when you made the connection to her career and the song "The Outside" because I had never made that connection and I've been a fan for years!
The harmonizer is Liz Rose. They were also listed/credited as co-writer to many of the songs on Debut and Fearless. I became a Taylor Swift fan waaaaaay back in 2006 when she released Tim McGraw and I never turned back! Also, The Outside and Tied Together With a Smile 🙏👌🤌
A Place In This World, Invisible, The Outside, and Tied Together With A Smile are so underrated and wow so amazing. but Mary's Song is like my fav. Mary's Song had to walk so It's Nice To Have A Friend could walk

you have to watch her performances with Def leppard for CMT crossroads when she was18 and had just released 'love story' .she performed should've said no too,the whole thing was just so dope and awsome🥲♥️
So glad you did this!! This is when I fell in love with her music as a 30 year old lol. This is my go to album, and no one would understand unless you followed her story. I know it is young, and her voice was barely developed, but it was still her way of connecting to the emotions and experience so many of go through throughout our life stages.
The original Picture to Burn lyrics said "That's fine I'll tell mine you're gay" but she changed it to "That's fine you won't mind if I say". The original audio can be found on RUclips.

Interesting observation for Tied Together With A Smile. I wonder how she’ll feel re-recording it having gone through an eating disorder herself years later
