If you look at Mindy Kaling's background: rich family, privledged background, ivy league education, no part-time jobs, handed her only jobs in Hollywood out of uni. You realise she has a lot more in common with her version of Freddy than Velma.

Velma was already intelligent and capable on her own. They didn’t need to diminish Fred’s intelligence and other characters’ roles just to make her stand out. God this is just sad.
A clear sign of a bad writer is they can't just elevate a character. They have to tear down another in an attempt to make their character look better. It's not a new thing. Garbage writing like that has been around forever, but it used to be few and far between. Now that incompetence is ignored (even encouraged, it seems) that kind of terrible writing is commonplace.
@@fattiger6957 You mean that writing thing basically if you can make your character competent, you just make the villain incompetent so your character can win against the villain?
It’s not Velma, it’s the Mindy “I got mercilessly picked on by all the means girls in school and now I’m a spiteful and vindictive cow with issues” Kaling show.
One thing each of the characters in the original had in common is that they were ultimately kind hearted kids. Making Fred in to a psycho spoiled brat? I mean come on! These creators are as the drinker said, just simply mean spirited and seek to shit on anything good.
Plus all this high school drama crap is way less inclusive and diverse, I barelly understand those because im not from the US and those dramas always seem dumb to me. Switching a group a friend travelling the country to just one town is a huge downgrade
Agree. Is it ironic that I think cartoons that handle mature topics in a respectful way are much more mature than cartoons and Rated R movies that handle mature topics in a disrespectful way?
@@nahuelleandroarroyo bro, nobody understands high school drama because it usually really is either brainless bullying or a result of too much teenie hormones. Same level of reason as in bar fights.

I know by the fact that any Scooby Doo stuff whether it's sequels or spin off could never work without Scooby Doo in it but I'm glad he's not even in this series. Imagine what the writers could've do to Scooby Doo if he was here 💀

But no one is allowed to mention or god forbit defend him or else you're a misogynist who's merely whining because white men aren't the center of attention anymore.
The weird thing is that the original Fred barely had any character to assassinate in the first place. Everything the writers of this reboot did to him is all projection of their own hang-ups about other people they invented out of thin air.
Normally I would watch something just once to see for myself, but I saw enough in the promos and clips to be disgusted. It won't be watched in my home.
Very insightful of you to point out how the original show taught kids that people who were very different could work together and needed each other, while this “diverse” and “progressive” update basically teaches viewers to resent (Fred & Daphne) or exploit (Norville) anyone of a different racial or social group.
Fred is a humble guy that respects everyone's opinion. Daphne loves Fred and accept his love for mystery. Velma is intelligent and doesn't badmouth anyone in the gang. Shaggy is funny and unique in his own way. Scooby loves his family and his snacks. They literally didn't need to change the characters personal trait, just throw in some new and fresh mystery cases we will be into it.
And nostalgia is a huge marketing tool. Truth is, Scooby was not a great is nostalgia likes to claim. It was always a "B" teir show (at least for me)... It was "Saved By the bell" or "Wings" before those shows existed. Just nothing else to watch, over syndicated show. I thin most of those 'retro" enthusiasm is not even for original scooby, but for rebooted 90's live action scooby. Most of you were not even alive when ORIGINAL Scooby was on. And what I'm saying is that was a host of other things to do back then. Scooby really isn't that great. Scrappy was annoying, and the first "shark" the show jumped.
Mindy Kaling grew up wealthy to an Architect father and Doctor mother, she went to an Ivy league school and studied Latin, one can only imagine the hardship she's had to face in her life.
Probably had to suffer a semester in a dorm room with another rich roommate until finally her parents put her up in a luxury apartment during the rest of her undergrad.

You just need to pick the right stuff, it’s like the music industry, yes we live in a time where people without any musical knowledge or skill on any instrument at all can go number one on the charts and pop music is and has been for the last few decades 99% pure trash, but we also live in times where more people than ever could do music at home without many hurdles and while most of it isn’t noteworthy the amount of great stuff hidden in the haybail is bigger than it ever was, it’s just that the pile of trash surrounding it gives the subjective feeling of seeing only shit being produced The same goes for almost all forms of art, literature, etc It’s definitely harder than ever before to find gold in the pile of shit than it ever was but there is also more gold to be found , keep on searching mate and don’t let these Tards ruin your enjoyment of media
It's drawing the haters and the supporters of the groups shown in this show together to shit on it and I absolutely love that. They say finding someone that hates the same stuff as you is better than finding someone that likes the same things as you for any kind of relationship.
Yep. I love subversive female representation in media. Daria, Jessica Jones, and Game of Thrones are just a few examples of shows that have done this well. The women in these shows are nuanced, flawed, and complex. They're human. There are also shows that implement diverse casting with good results. In my mind, race-switching one Targaryen branch in House of the Dragon makes sense. In their vast intercontinental empire, Targaryen intermarriage with non-White rulers would be perfectly feasible. Yes, it's a change from the book, but it doesn't detract from the story. Velma is the complete opposite. It's horribly written, exploitative troll-bait. It's the worst of cynical tokenistic woke-ism that shits all over good representation.

Looking back, I was bummed that Scooby Doo wasn’t in the show, but in hindsight, that was probably a good thing… Heaven knows what they would’ve done to him in a show like this 😰
The real Velma was never mean or anything. She was always happy to help her friends and to also receive their help when needed. No one was mean to anyone in that cartoon because the very point was that it was a lesson about teamwork and the value of using everyone strengths to overcome the mysteries. The only thing the new serie does is that It gives us a good glimpse of how the authors are thinking. Edit : English isn't my language.
@@hankhoses8668 They could still have made an Indian heritage lesbian or bi-sexual character out of her and make her interesting. Making her a snarky, evil bitch though...
No the worry part is because the show if getting so much hate, more and more people are checking it out to see just how awful it is, raising its streaming numbers. So even though it may have horrible audience scores, HBO can simply say yeah well look how many millions of people still watched it?
Just take the same show but with its own characters, and it would have a much better chance to work. But of course that's not the same, you have to take something that exists and ruin it, that's the most important part it seems.
the worst part is that they disrespected the original cartoon while the Original creators are now dead, that is trully disgusting to disrespect someones legacy even after their death.
This is what happens when you tell Kelly from the office that she is funny and smart and should totally write a TV show where she self inserts herself as the main character into the show.
I couldnt stand her in the office. She was easily the worst written and most annoying character in that show. Makes sense she would create some garbage like this. I seriously dont get how she even got money to make this shit.
Got to give Mindy Kaling credit for one thing: She'll single-handedly be responsible for the Scrappy-Doo episodes no longer being considered the low-point of the Scooby-Doo franchise. Unless "Velma" is disinherited from the franchise (which it already is for me.)
That's bad though, if we do talk about this cancer they make a profit. They didn't even give a single fuck about scooby do, that's why scooby isn't even in his own show. They're sending a message that they ruined the franchise in purpose.
Not me tbh. I legit like it. Not love but i laughed a few times and the animation is good. And i can get past the changed races of the characters. It’s an adaptation they are trying something new
Only the modern left has that ability. But shame on us(sane, non-demonically possessed human beings) for being so complacent for so long as to empower and embolden them to this extreme. I don't even think they care it's despised by 97% of all people, to them it's all about creating new norms and conditioning. They knew the hatred it would conjure up would only be free publicity, absolutely sickening.
Shows like Velma and She-Hulk feel like the people in high school who called you "nerdy" for liking cartoons with good storylines went into screenwriting and are trying desperately to capitalize on the popularity of these kinds of shows, but never grew out of their "lol nerd" mindset. And then when the audience hates it, they jump back and say "you're all racist!!" while totally ignoring the key story issues.
That's because the writers of the OG series were actually good and cared about good characterization. Something too many modern 'writers' don't know how to do.
Even in the movies, when everyone went their separate ways, and eventually met up, they act like they haven't missed a day in each other's company. Kaling really nuetered her series right off the bat.
Yeah, that's something I realized while watching this review: I never questioned why these characters were together, even though their differing backgrounds invites scrutiny. I did question Scrappy-Doo, however.
Seriously, how can anyone still be friends with each other in this version of the story? It seems like they all hate each other, I definitelly would not want any of these clowns by my side.
The funny part is that Mindy Kaling is a privileged girl who grew up in a rich family. But of course they're always the ones who are the most oppressed and the most angry. She has more in common with her version of Fred than Velma.
So oppressed and such a victim she got a sweetheart admission to an Ivy League University and never had to work a real job for a day, like most activists.
No no no, you don't understand. She is brown and that always means that she is oppressed. When I drive around at work, there is neighborhood that is made up of like 90% indian families or more. It's a really nice neighborhood with big houses. Those people are all victims as well just like Mindy.

Velma was already known as the brains of the group, she’s usually the one that does all the research and figures out who the bad guy is. When they unmask the monster, Velma usually says something like, “Just as I thought” or “Like I suspected.” They didn’t need to dumb everyone else down to make her stand out. Fred was the leader who came up with the plans and traps, Velma was the brains, Daphne was the pretty face and Fred’s love interest, and Shaggy and Scooby were the comic relief/monster bait. Everyone in the group had a defined role that was important to the essence of the show. This show shat on that. Almost the entire Mystery Inc. Gang was race swapped and the only one they left white, Fred, is now the object of ridicule because of his whiteness. None of these characters are anything like their original counterparts except in name, and from what I can tell, there’s no Scooby at all. It’s like the showrunners wanted to give a big middle finger to anyone who ever watched and enjoyed this show as a kid. What a joke. Edit: Hell, this piece of shit show makes all the live action Scooby Doo movies look like Citizen Kane. At least the live action movies managed to get the characters and group dynamic right…
Daphne has always been intelligent and resourceful as well, while breaking the trope of the entitled and mean rich girl because she was always kind to everyone..
Daphne, more than another beautiful face, she is like a McGyber version on Scooby Doo. She know everything to be known of make up and cloths, which make it easier to find the connection to Velma. Velma only made an analysis of the component. Fred, for more of what he apparent, he came up with the decisions and plans just as you said. And Shaggy and Scooby are braver than people think.
I think we all now owe Scrappy Doo a great big apology. Edit: Mindy Kalin thought that she identified with Velma, not realizing that she is Toot from _Drawn Together._
That's precisely correct. The 'creator' has a massive chip on her shoulder because she's not the most important person in the room. Although mostly she hates herself because deep down she knows she doesn't deserve it.
The fact that they not only changed the name of the main character of the show, Scooby Doo, but in fact wrote him out of it completely and made it all about someone else tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about this show.
Well, the show was originally written as something not even related to Scooby Doo in the first place. The studio basically forced the show's creators to add the Scooby Doo stuff to it.
I'd say more like Prince Harry given so much but still the victim with a massive and to grind. I doubt the maker Mindy is it ever wanted in her life and many other people involved and this is their interpretation of those who do.
I doubt Mindy was ever bullied that badly. Did she have a blonde rich boy in her high school making salutes and unable to cut his own food? I think she's just a nasty entitled piece of work, surrounded by an industry that loves to ruin things. I have no sympathy for her or her trash products.
The creator is a very bitter old woman who never got as far as she wanted and now is lashing out with this garbage, I’m sure some of the HBO folks buckled because she used all the terms against them, still. For a company who has made actual works of art they should have known better. Morons.
There's not a whole lot in this world that could be considered more insulting than to take a beloved legacy character going back decades and turning them into a shameless self-insert. That takes signing one's name on someone else's artwork to a whole new level.

I think the real problem here is the Scooby-Doo is just slapped on top of what Mindy wanted to write. She wanted to make a show with herself as a self insert. It is like bad fanfiction, "Velma" (the self insert) is the center and EVERYTHING else is set dressing.
That's all that modern writers can do. They want to tell their own story, but they don't have the balls to set it up as an independent story. So they use existing IPs to ensure name recognition, while telling whatever story they want to tell.

Don't you just love how they just made the Scooby gang into racial stereotypes in an attempt to be inclusive. Velma: The smart one, so she has to be Indian. Making her a self insert is low, having her get with Daphne so you can feel good about yourself is even lower. Shaggy: The one who was often theorized to be a stoner is black. Every girlboss show or movie gives the main character a black sidekick that's useless by comparison who also simps for them. Daphne: The cool Asians from "Mean Girls" given from. Unsurprisingly, she has far less personality than her pristine and popular original variant. Fred: Look how they massacred my boy. Fred is the overplayed "Fuck Straight White Men" card, where he embodies the perceived flaws of both men and white people. He's a spineless cuck to the degree that would impress OG Shaggy yet he has psychopathic outbursts. Very unlike the OG Fred, who was friendly, level headed, resourceful, and would throw hands with a monster to protect his friends. Scoob was the only one saved from the chopping block thanks to being a talking dog and thus too kid friendly (as if Brian Griffin doesn't exist). Glad maturity is equated to violence and sexual references every two minutes nowadays.
I didn't mind the race swapping, white washing happens all the time in hollywood; but judging by all the reviews it seems the attempt at "diversity" backfired horrendously by making them incredibly shallow stereotypes. They literally could have made Velma Indian and not changed her character at all and it would have been good representation because the point of diversity is to say race doesn't affect your character. Everyone would have lost their shit, but then had no argument as to why Velma couldn't be Indian if she was literally the exact same as OG scooby-doo. Now it just gives ammo to people to say "See? Diverse casting is terrible because it's pandering".
Wouldn't it be cool if we got a show about a different mystery crew in the same universe? They could even be all black like the original was all white, give them a pet parrot instead of a talking dog. Maybe they've been at it for longer than mystery inc, and they deal with more mature mysteries. I'd watch that show. unless these fuckers write it they'd find a way to make it terrible

Even if we let that slide as an "adult, nsfw version" of Scooby Doo, the characters don't feel like themselves. The only thing Velma from this show got in common with the beloved cartoon character from our childhood is the name, as do Fred, Daphne and others.
What’s really crazy, is that the Mystery Inc gang knockoffs in Velma get away Scott free at the end of season 1. When half of them should be in jail, and the other half, in therapy, as they’d be in a worse spot than when they’d started. Yesterday, I read some of the stories my 13-year-old self had written and cringed hard, wondering how tf I could've thought of something so pathetic. Today, I watched an episode of Velma and I now feel boundlessly proud of 13-year-old me.
While I'm not brave enough to inflict this show upon myself, there is a particular plot point that comes up which I absolutely _despise._ At one point, Velma 'proves' Fred is the killer based on almost no evidence and he is arrested then and there. Immediately after, she and Norville find a second body, the circumstances of which make it flat-out impossible for Fred to be the killer. Yet Velma, the supposed _only smart and rational character,_ insists that Fred is still guilty of both murders purely because she doesn't like him. Velma: a murder mystery where every single character is terminally stupid and irredeemably horny, with a thin layer of Scooby Doo paint thrown lazily over the top.
Not only that, but to paraphrase the moron twitter crowd, "They go to great lengths to try and sexualize minors." I mean, they literally show a ton of highschool aged girls (as in, under 18) running around naked or barely covered in towels/soap bubbles. The show is just mean-spirited and hateful. Like so many other "remakes/reimaginings", the writers think they're far smarter than they actually are. They hate the original IP, so figure they can "improve" it by remaking it "for modern audiences" (ie, shitting on white men, making every female character lesbian, race-swapping characters, etc). It's all so stupid.
The most surprising part of this show is the fact that HBO canceled so many near-complete shows and movies, many of which pushed _the message,_ but looked at Velma and thought “nah, this one can stay”
Thought that was Disney doing that with Marvel. Didn't they can a completed $60 million movie because it would have been more expensive to release something that nobody wanted to see?

How to make scooby doo remake good: Shaggy: a stoner who thinks his pet dog can talk, but it's not. At the end, he stops being a stoner, bought a puppy names scrappy and found a reason in life. Scooby: on everyone's pov, it's a normal dog that barks and always happy. In truth, he is shaggy's coping mechanism. He is, ironically the heart of the group using his adorable qualities. Fred: a brave, well intentioned dude, but his friends always jump in to help due to his lack of knowledge regarding social norms (he grew up as a privledged white family). Daphne: thinks she's know everything, but humbled and a graceful loser if proven wrong (either shaggy told her the bleak reality, fred told he to never give up and find other way to solution, or velma points out her fallacy). She's just lacking attention in her childhood and was driven to prove herself. Then she learned the value of friendship and loyalty. Velma: an actual knowledgeable character, but hides her lack of sex appeal through harmless sass and sarcasm. Later she learned that life is not just about getting men, but to be the best person than before.
I'll just say, an "adult" tv show but takes place in a high school basically sums up that the writers never actually matured and moved on from highschool.
Its like in star wars lol. Admiral Holdo could easily be portrayed as an incompetent CIS villain that loses to Obiwan/Anakin because of their toxicity or some shit. Its insane how clueless these writers are sometimes.
Or maybe they're unconsciously showing what appeals to them, or a particular age they feel more attracted to, I mean for real continuity they should have lived Thelma out of school and into an ADULT working environment surrounded by 40 somethings like she is now.
It gives a lot of insight into how these people view themselves. They feel like they're decades younger than they actually are and have fantasies of re-rolling their high school years as young adults with more experience. And despite basically espousing a weird version of redshirting, they're probably against it in real life.
Remember: it isn't just that these hacks can't come up with anything new, they have to tear down and completely trash anything we all used to love. They don't just want your money. They want your memories.
Seem to me that there is more than a little bit of neo-Maoism going on: they need to re-write all of history and all of literature so that nothing exists that is not woke and so the people are incapable of ever experiencing non-wokeness.
@bunnywithakeyboard7628 idk man, I grew up with more money than most but my dad was also a child molester and my mom aided and helped him get away with it. My poor friends couldn't understand why I was suicidal throughout high school and middle school. I don't think material wealth has anything at all to do with happiness tbh. I left as soon as I turned 18, I've been poor as fuck ever since, and I'm extremely happy now as a broke man working hard for what little he has, but I was suicidal as a rich kid. I think your mentality is a result of when you assume everyone had a similar quality of life to you, but with varying degrees of money in their bank account. But it's much more complex than that.

Its exactly that and this kind of self-insert fan fiction is a prime example of hack writing, especially the Mary Sue where she is great at everything and everyone loves her. Hard to believe the writer actually majored in screenplays at an Ivy League school. I've seen people who haven't even graduated high school write better material.

What’s really crazy, is that the Mystery Inc gang knockoffs in Velma get away Scott free at the end of season 1.

Its scoobny doo. What the fuck are they gonna do without the DOG bruh
I'm not sure if there's ever been a show that's managed to unite pretty much everyone in their sheer contempt for its existence.
Picard?
It's either this or the ring of power
@@ridhorizqs1032
Agreed, this one is worse !
@@ridhorizqs1032 Eh, Rings of Power had a few defenders.
This show however? I'm seeing nobody defending it at all.
Santa Inc.
However they tried to blame Republicans.
You know something is truly awful when everyone comes together to hate it... literally everyone.
Even IGN
I think Velma is a great show. So not everyone.
You know it's bad when the protagonist is an out of shape black woman
@@tritonum u suck too then 😅
@@tritonum Well, you are wrong.
Why couldn’t she just change the names of everyone and make her own terrible cartoon without trying tonconnect it to the poor mystery gang
They want to deprive new generation from access to real values.
To paraphrase Tolkien, The shadow that bred Velma can only mock, it cannot make: not real new things of its own.
They want a culture shift.
no they just want BlackRock to invest in them, they just want money
Funny thing is, Mindy grew up rich with no hardships in life, everything handed to her, so I don't think she had a hard childhood.
People grow character from suffering. Plenty of spoiled rich brats think they have it so hard because they don’t understand true difficulty.
@@mr.doctorcaptain1124 Excuse me, we only celebrate working class heroes here. Rich don't get no sympathy or understanding! Money=happiness, didn't you know? /s
@@mr.doctorcaptain1124 The thing is, it's funny seeing someone born in a rich (And as far as I know, loving) family, had a good-paying job even before graduating (Most graduated people either struggle to work in the area or end up working with something else) and probably won't get fired for a trainwreck of a show, pointing her finger at the Average Joe and calling him "privileged" is tone-deaf.
If I am privileged, then Mindy Kailing is the Princess of Massachusetts.
@@mr.doctorcaptain1124 people see patterns. Generally there's less problems like you had with wealth, so they can't quite compute it. I understand, I had the same problem - comfortable lifestyle with a lot of abuse going on, not sexually though thank god
If Hannah-Barbara saw this show they would actually file defamation.
Utterly embarrassing to our society that this was published
I know, right? I wouldn't be surprised if this show actually ruins the entire Scooby-Doo franchise for many people!
They didn’t?!! 😨😨
@@brittanywilliams2367 William Hanna And Joseph Barbara are thankfully deceased and I'm envious that they died before knowing this...Abortion, existed.
The fact that Infinity Train got shelved despite all the fan admirement, but THIS Lovecraftian abomination got the funding to hire a voice cast, to hire animators, to have writers, storyboard artists, and have full studio equipment should REALLY be considered a EXTREAMLY Bad Omen for the Future of the Mainstream Animation Industry
*HANNA & BARBERA

I wonder if the majority of the entertainment industry will one day in the future make shows that people hate instead of shows people love, because there's only so much someone can do to make people love something, but there is endless ways to get people to hate a product.
To be fair making shaggy black was probably the most unintentionally funny thing they did
I know! lmao that someone actually thought making the stoner character black was a good idea!
All we're missing is for him to have his own music label and we'll be set
Question: is Norville also a stoner? If so, that is a racial stereotype. LOL I refuse to watch this, so if someone who has taken the bullet for us could let me know, that'd be great.
Yup. They thought "there's a character that smokes a lot of weed. Make him black".
@@scotttill3847 from what ive heard, not only did they not make him a stoner, but hes actually against drug use, goofy ahh
What we need now is the REAL Scooby crew to suddenly show up in the mystery machine and reveal the writers of this show to be the actual monsters...
Here b4 this comment blows up
Fred: "OK, gang, now let's see who 'Velma' REALLY is." * pulls off mask *

Mindy Kaling: "Yes, and I would have gotten away with it too if it hadn't been for you meddling critics."

They couldn’t of made Velma a more unlikeable character if they tried
I think they did a great job of accurately portraying the modern day leftist.
@@mchonkler7225 I keep seeing people post dumb stuff about leftists. You do realize that "Left" isn't a cause that people support, right?
It’s just Mindy Kaling as a character.

Velma is part of the "I can't believe it's not intentional" genre. A work that is so bad that it looks like the writers are intentionally trying to make a bad show for whatever reason, but it's not; the writers are just bad at their job
i feel bad for the younger generation that thinks this is what scooby doo is like
Just show them everything from the original up to A pup named Scooby doo

I feel bad for the younger generation that thinks this is what entertainment is like.
It’s the same folks that love Annie of Dunie Tatooine.
I wouldn't worry, I'm sure this show will be canceled and soon forgotten
