Lauren doesn’t care about the source material. This was known in 2018 when she didn’t want Ciri to be white. She also wanted Ciri to be the lead not Geralt. She blamed trolls and racists when people objected. The article is online.
Funny thing about wanting ciri as the lead all they needed was to put in the work and put a good show.
If they could get to where ciri is grown up like in the games ,they could have strong lead Ciri base on the game version
Ciri is basically the lead in the books though. Yeah, the early short story collections focus on Geralt (and they're also my favourite Witcher stories) but once you move into the main series with Blood of Elves, the books are pretty conclusively about Ciri. She and Geralt end up on opposite sides of the world and the story largely focuses on her struggles, powers and rivalries from that point on. Geralt is still a major part of the books, and the interactions between him and his adventuring party are Sapkowski's best writing in the series imho, but I think it's wrong to say the books are definitively about him at that point.

So Hollywood, Henry Cavill is cancelled because he wanted to respect the lore, played games and wouldn't pop his top off constantly. Meanwhile, Ezra Miller can burgle homes, groom children, abuse drugs, get arrested countless times and choke women to the ground. Either he has pics of Zaslav naked with a donkey or hollywood has lost the plot and my money.

Cavill cancelled? I don’t think so. He signed up for a Warhammer show recently and I’m sure he will land some pretty big roles in Hollywood. He didn’t say anything wrong, just walked away from sheety Netflix series (and I don’t think Netflix is well respected within big movie studios anyway).

as a Polish witcher fan, i can confirm that I’m indeed upset that directors decided to shit on our culture and mythology and even typical slavic look (which means rather fairer complexion) because these charasteristics weren’t „woke enough”. The ethnical background is what makes the orginal witcher unique. There is no ✨flavor✨in this new „all in one” remake. When we try to include everything so noone can get offended, the final product is simply nothing.

these shows are not intended for Slavic audiences though - they're intended for westerners. Making the characters look western to appeal to western audiences is basic marketing - I'm afraid Americans are not really interested in watching a show with bunch of Slavs running around (we can always watch the Polish series if we need that 🤣). Of course they could've done this a lot smarter instead of mixing every culture representative possible in every possible group but that's another story.

My man Henry Cavill built his own computer, played the Witcher Trilogy on hard, and was the backbone of this full show. He is one hell of a guy.

As a fellow Witcher fan, Henry has earned nothing but my respect. He was probably the only good thing in the show and he just have been internally screaming watching those hacks butcher the source material.

I am a Witcher fan from Poland. The second I heard Netflix is gonna do Witcher I knew it would be a disaster.
There is actually really old Witcher tv series(1996), based on books, which was considered pretty mediocre, but now looking back at that it and comparing it to the abomination by Netflix, that series is a fucking masterpiece. I recommand watching it for anyone interested.
Really TV show back then? But without Hollywood big budget and no fancy CGI it's gotta be a poor adaptation. You can't do good fantasy shows without money.
@@jonfreeman9682 It has terrible CGI yes, shotout to episode with Dragon, but it's still pretty decent when it comes to acting, especially since it was made here with respect for source material. It's not perfect or some masterpiece mind you, but still way better than modern day propaganda adaptations.

Henry Cavil fought long and hard to keep the integrity of the story universe together, and for that he has my utmost respect.
Unfortunately, the showrunners and writers had other ideas, and ran the show into the ground from the start with malicious intent.

Yeah that is the problem with modern "entertainment". I would personally dig a strong female lead in something, so long as she merits the role... not as some agenda.
They can't create characters these days without trying to ingratiate themselves to pressure groups by adding labels to them. A good character shouldn't be based on ethnicity, gender, able-bodiedness, or sexual orientation. Memorable characters are that way because of how they act, not what they look like.

If they had only included a little Indian dude who realized that he was the only one who remembered the Beatles and made it his mission to introduce all of those Beatles songs to an astonished and grateful world, I would have so totally watched this.
I'd just like to add that since Henry is clearly a bit fan of the books and games, and that a former writer of the netflix series admitted in a recent interview that several of his co-writers openly showed their hatred and mockery of the source material just supports my theory that at least one of the reasons Henry left was because he did not want to be a part of his butchery of something that he loves any longer.

Such a fair point. You know for all the shit talked about the Witcher, I kept my head down & followed Geralt's story, & I enjoyed it. If i looked around too much or too deep into other characters, well that's not my point. Mad respect to Mr. Cavill, an actor who, like the greats (Pacino, Di Nero, 90% of the original Lord Of The Rings cast & 97% of the original Star Wars, & hell Star Trek TNG) cared about their characters & treated them as entities who deserve respect, actually found a way to enjoy the Witcher. I tried, I really did, to enjoy Blood Origin, Christ my phone had an alarm set for when it came out. But the acting was so over the top or stunted. 1 of my biggest cringe parts was b4 the made the 1st Witcher, stone fart & Lady Lark pretending to be sexually attracted to each other when they "kissed" there was a sound I heard, a romantic/charismatic black hole opening up in the space/time continuum. Anyways, we'll be ok. Maybe these are all learning sessions for future writers, Gods Please, Make It So. Peace fellow human...

Can we have our own characters please? I’m an old ass Caribbean woman and I fucking love the Witcher books in all their Slavic glory and the games for bringing my favorite characters to life. The books are unique for their complex and deeply flawed female characters and remain a testament to the lasting impact of the women who helped rebuild Poland after the war. Their influence is all over those books. It’s also refreshing to see a stoic, strong yet genuinely good male character with depth and charisma. I crave seeing people that look like me and my family in more entertainment but we deserve our own stories and the fans of these stories want to celebrate what makes them uniquely Polish. This pandering is basically corporate trolling as a marketing ploy and unfairly makes these actors take the brunt of manufactured rage for no good reason than free publicity.
I’m Black American and if goofy Hollywood wanted to do a new series about Shaka Zulu and Shaka was replaced by a slender female character who could easily defeat 15 strong men in 55 seconds and many characters in the Zulu nation were white dudes and LGBT people I wouldn’t watch that BULLSHYT

I'm Polish,and I blame Sapkowski for everything ,his greed has destroyed his work and it's inexcusable in my opinion , he was still bitter for selling the right to the books to CD Project back in early 2000's (fixed sum ,no royalties, and it was pennies) that when Netflix approached him he was more than ready to sell his soul even though he knew exactly what the show would become if he did. Shame on him for recommending 2nd season of the witcher before it came out too, most of witcher fans in Poland cannot stand him.
And all because he apparently didn't think video games were 'serious' enough as an entertainment medium... _lmao_ - talk about sour grapes! Silly old boomer...

But I feel dread if on an another attempt to cash in on Witcher the Hollywood will take his Hussite trilogy (I think this books are actually better than the witcher and it's clear he was way more interested in writing those and not the last Witcher books) the Hollywood treatment of Narreturm, Reinevann and all that historical atmosphere would be catastrophic.

The unfortunate truth is that modern Hollywood has a writing problem. The problem derives from the fact that "modern" writers tend to interchange ATTRIBUTES for VIRTUES. It is a shame.
They also have next to no real-life experience to base their stories on, leaving them unable to write their characters as anything other than stereotypes.

In retrospect it's so weird how everyone loved the first season. I think it was entirely because of Henry. He really *was* that show.
Yes. I cared a little bit about the Yennifer parts and got slightly intrigued about Ciri - but it was Henry who single-handedly carried the show and I was looking forward to every of his scenes and fights.
Yeah I was interested in the monsters and the fight scenes after I saw the story was shit and the looks of yen, triss, fringilla etc. Straight up skipped the yen storyline.
The part that kept weirdly bugging me was how the musician/elf kept using small daggers in pitched battles. I don't care what kind of kung-fu they're going to pretend she knows, the first guy with a full sized sword, axe or spear and has a basic knowledge of how to use it is going to straight-up body her.
It could be that she doesn't want to fight but she brings some stuff of small size(so that it can be kept in the instrument an pass inspections unnoticed) with her so that she can defend herserlf at least
to be fair it is fantasy. it's not suppose to be real life weapon simulation tactics. it's more like a dungeons and dragons campaign where you could make a effective dagger user. i know the witcher is somewhat realistic when it comes to medieval weaponry but this show barely has anything to do with the title it has.

I read the books of the Witcher series. It was impressive how much Henry remembered and even said the same lines word by word as the book did sometimes. It hurt how much they butchered some of the characters from the book. The one that hurt me the most was the beast man from the season 2. He was my favorite character who was the first to be in the first Witcher book. Here they made him a pussy. I was so mad how they also butchered Lydia. She wasnt just any villain. She was an amazingly beautiful character. So much suffering in her and all for what she thought right and for the love she had. Fucked her up too…

When i watched that episode of Season 2 I was kind of confused, and was thinking, "this seams familiar but I just don't remember it like this." So I went back and read it, and yeah, Ciri wasn't even born at that point in Geralt's life, but Netflix put her in the episode.

I love that Lauren Hisrich said she wouldn't use anything from the games in the TV show and would stick strictly to the books (as if she's too good for the games), then proceeded to completely butcher the books.
I remember when "The Witcher" was a semi-selfcontained, grounded, slavic/scandinavian tale of regular humans who have to live together with other regular low-magic beings and magic in itself was a wonder and rarity, and the WHOLE THING DIDN'T LOOK LIKE SOME ASS-END AFTERTHOUGHT OF AN EPISODE FROM THE NEWER SEASONS OF DR.WHO WHAT THE FUCK
The Witcher (in books) was all about living together with different species, races, all colours and shapes. It was about tolerance (or lack of it) between humans, elves, dwarfs, magical beings etc. The stories had it all - and readers known it, makes the books so popular not only in Poland, but even internationally. Then comes netflix with its showrunner and writers, use the witcher brand and making it in their own, 2020s USA-centric version... And we know the rest.

b) the writers: 'who cares bout the story or the characters, The Message is the important thing!'
You could have ethnically distinct countries, with a sprinkling of other races, from other areas, traders and whatever, but if you must have a diverse cast all in one place, here's a thought, why not have lots of the story set in port cities, or crossroads on trade routes, where the different races converge. Which usually makes for a interesting setting, for deceits, double crosses and heroism, and shady dealing in back street bars. Istanbul sort of thing, I'm not a writer or anything, but you know, it just might work visually and plot wise.

It is heartbreaking to see the state of Witcher series.
The books are easily convertible into a show (unlike some other stories like Foundation for example), the themes of the book are quite deep, it talks about war and xenophobia and racism without glorifying it and it has multiple strong female characters to keep everyone happy. Yet, they somehow fucked it up.
Just recently saw Hypnotic breaking down the fight scene.Ppl in comms where upset about Michelle Yeoh wasting her potential.
And then comes one more riddiculus thing - 1000 reasons why you should watch "witcher: woke origin".

It's funny that the showrunners who seem to be pro-diversity and anti-racism, can't even fathom that the original source material was that as well and in their attempts to create a diverse cast end up failing to tell the story correctly. So their attempts at creating a diverse world actually make the racism, sexism and xenophobia in the original material no longer be educational in the slightest.

Because Michelle Yeoh is the epitome of a badass actress, she's done majority action based roles since her breakout in the Hong Kong industry in 1985, always does most of her own stunts and overall is just a highly skilled and highly talented actress even in dramatic roles , none of these woke f**ks could ever reach her level.... She is the truest form of an empowered woman and the roles she plays are the truest forms of empowered female characters, but you can't wokiewood to understand that.
Same thing with Wheel of Time. Those books also have many heroic female characters, but the Amazon show destroyed not only the men but the women too. Modern showrunners have zero idea what they are doing (or they know exactly and fuck it up on purpose). I don't get why they hate the source material that much. Mind-boggling .
I can't imagine how Henry Cavill must have felt going on set every day after realizing that his dream job turned into an active role in the destruction of something he cares about.
His contract might have been a golden cage, but a cage nonetheless.

I only hope that Amazon are giving him the creative freedom and not meddling too much. I don't know if Henry Cavill has any writing or directing talent but I'd rather watch something made by an amateur who loves the lore than someone with 100 credits under their belt who doesn't give a shit and just wants to push a message.

Amazon has done a number on a few 'how can they possibly fuck this up? - ohhhh, like that' IPs (Wheel of Time and LotR). Really need to hope lessons have been learned, but the doubling down of the 'we know best' attitude of these showrunner types this new witcher shit feels like it represents doesnt make me feel hugely optimistic.
I know nothing of Warhammer but the fact that Cavil is not just in the show but is a producer and he's genuinely passionate about the source material makes me want to try it. It could honestly be the first adaptation in the last 10 years where the show runners actually give a shit (besides Dune). Here's hoping the rest of the producers don't coordinate against Cavil because if the show is good, it will also show what fans have been saying for years that you can only make a successful adaptation IF YOU RESPECT THE SOURCE MATERIAL.

I think I speak for all of us when I say the real audience looking at this want a series/movie that closely follows the source material and has internally consistent, fact checked story. We want psychologically fleshed-out characters, realistic physics, consistent non-physics (magic) mechanics, and a captivating scene rhythm. Everything else is a bonus: good graphics and effects, pretty people, battle choreography, music, costumes, and even above average acting, Id say. Sometimes you can get away with mediocre acting and not ruin the immersion.
We don't care about the color of anyone's skin, as long as it's the skin the source material describes. And if it doesn't, and it's a good fit for it, you can make them green for all we care.
This is literally the formula. Its that simple. And in a world where the movie industry is so powerful and wealthy this is trivial to make.
I know people that can make computer algorithms that can write book adaptations with such parameters and spit them out daily.
But Hollywood can't be bothered.

My wife and I felt lukewarm about the first season of the Witcher and we were pleasantly surprised by Season 2. We went into Season 3 excited, believing that momentum and learned lessons would result in further improvement. We were dead wrong. We couldn't even get past the first two episodes.
The primary issue in those episodes is that Anya Chalotra (Yennifer) and Freya Allan (ciri) are black holes of charisma, and fail to sell any of the few emotions the script trusts them with having. Freya looks 10 years older than she really is, and her attempt to portray a 15-17 year old is hideous. The writing was terrible, the quips unfunny, the plot unengaging, and Jaskeir is a void of likable attributes.
We basically endured every scene without Henry Cavill just so we can make it to the next scene with Henry Cavill. His departure from the show will leave nothing of value remaining. I think they should recast the show, replace all executives and creative talent, except costuming and CGI, and reboot this turn. Season 2 demonstrated potential.

I really hate modern day writers portray elves as nothing more than diverse human with pointy ears. To me elves are always the most beautiful being created with slender built and skin as pale as silver, or ivory. I feel really bad for Henry cavill. This whole series could have been so great and something he could have been really proud of. I hope he’s at least proud of his personal performance cuz he really did do an outstanding job. It turned me into a Henry cavill fan as I’ve never seen any of his other stuff, but now I think I’ll finally give Superman a try. I thoroughly enjoyed the Witcher season 1, not knowing anything about the lore. But season 1 in my opinion was pretty good, even though Witcher fans had issues with it. Season 2 was an absolute punch in the gut and I was so confused about how bad it was. It barely had their one shining star involved in any scenes! Wth?! I won’t be watching the Witcher anymore and I hope cavill can get his chance to be excellent again in something more worthy of his talent and enthusiasm.
Polish series from 2002 makes way more sense and has way more climate of the books than any Netflix creations. Plus Żebrowski is so good there as Geralt and so is Zamachowski as Jaskier
Game of thrones had diversity, there were strong male characters, strong female characters, light skin characters, black characters, disabled characters (the hound's burned face, Tyrion being a dwarf, Jamie losing his hand, Theon...), we had Brienne, a really tall/big woman who got bullied because of her height, we had gay/bisexual characters, but did it ever feel forced? no. Did it feel annoying? no. Was it the characters' only personality trait? no. That's because the story was great, and the characters were so well-written. Diversity is never a problem when it's well executed and when it's a subtle detail that doesn't change the whole direction of the story
GoT did what this series _should've_ done: Give every region its own ethnic makeup, so all the different places and people are distinct and recognizable.
Hilariously enough, this makes the show more diverse than these explicitly diverse "Every place looks the same" shows
This's spot on, plus GOT's writters didn't fulfill the need to get any representative character a "I'm the best" screen time, even to the point any distinctive character arc isn't to be found.

For example (as much spoiler-free as possible) Renly isn't interesting because he just kills every characters in his way with the left hand, while the right one is busy opening a Pepsy can then putting in to his mouth. He is interesting because...of the way he behaves, and specifically the way he interacts with other characters.

But even those simple story tricks look like flying way above the head of actual majors' movie-makers.

I would like a show all about African, Asian, South American, or
Middle Eastern ancient lore. I like learning about other cultures and it would never occur to me to question that a show specifically dedicated to a specific people when travel was extremely limited would largely only contain those people. If they want to make a futuristic story where travel is extremely common, I would find it completely believable to have a cast of characters of varying races. I just want it all to be realistic and logical and I don't want to be told constantly that the only reason I want things this way is because I'm racist and misogynistic.
Well there's Trese on Netflix. The story arc is a little rushed compared to the comic. But the "strong female character" is much better than this.

I'm a Polish Witcher fan that started with books, went through the games and must now deal with profanation of all 3 his most beloved universes: LotR, SW and Witcher. If you look close at this it shows none of the characters gets any dirt, grime, soot or shmegma on them from battle at all. These strong female and strong diverse female characters are so strong that not even dust can settle on their stunning and brave faces.

I often wonder if the poor writing, bad set design, and half-arsedness of the production is a symptom of the writers' hatred of the source material or the cause of it. That being said, writers' hatred of the source material is so widespread that it has basically killed fantasy.
No need to brood about it - these shows are targeted for no audience. Just create something to have something, paychecks, move on. Almost like we didn't expect anyone to watch it.

No, that’s just Netflix’ low budget… they have been cutting down on everything and even announced that they might put ads on Netflix and ban account sharing. :/ they are dirt poor now…
I see them more as cultural imperialists who see everything else as bad or problematic and they want to fix it in the most stupidest way they can do.
