I’ve been using the R6 for several months for photos. Yesterday was the first time I used it for a paid video project. I got the overheat warning after about 45 minutes of on and off recording. Most clips were about 2-3 minutes long. Shooting 4K30 standard color profile and IPB light. Using an Andycine C6 monitor and dual card recording. It was in direct sunlight around 75 degrees. After getting the warning light I was able to manage it by turning the camera off whenever possible and putting the camera in the shade. Never had a forced shutdown but it was definitely nerve racking trying to manage it in front of the client.

Yea, they do get warm. I had both my R5 and R6 give me a overheat warning yesterday at a wedding but we were outside and it was almost 100 degrees. For me it’s easy to manage how much I use the camera so I was able to get my shots and let the cameras cool off without them overheating

same thing happened to me - shooting 4k on a short narrative film on a hot day - warning flashed on once then disappeared - yes, nerve wracking but the warning didn't flash again - I let it sit a bit between shots but shooting long takes was worrisome - I use an Atomos Ninja - I also swing the camera's screen away from the body for more cooling - still, the buggabu has raised its head

I knew about overheating on R6 but heard that it was fixed and wasn't that bad. Finally purchased R6 and 20 minutes after shooting at home 4k60 overheat light comes on, couple min later it shuts down. No direct sunlight and it is like 67 degrees at my house during winter. I am like "really ?" I shoot interviews and music performances I can't imagine stopping an interview to cool off the camera and if I wanted to shoot in 1080p I would be completely happy with my old setup. My 6 year relationship with Canon may be coming to an end... feel sad. Tried firmware upgrade and tips in this video, no noticeable difference. Didn't give up completely but feel cheated as it is very clear if you ever need to record in 4k over 30 minutes this camera is not for that

    • @TonyMellinger
      @TonyMellinger  2 года назад

Interesting… and that was in 4k24? I shoot all of my RUclips videos with the R6 in 4k. The only real reason to shoot in 4k60 is if you’re going to slow it down. And if that’s the case, you dont really need 30 minutes of it 🤷🏼‍♂️ idk, I’ve never had trouble with my camera getting warm

Change your SD Card, slow SD Card was the culprit, happened to me, get the 300mb/s cards and it will record like crazy, I was pulling my hair out why my other r6 can last 2 hours and the other can't turns out the slow SD Card was the culprit, slower SD Card gives more work to the Camera's processor. Also turn on Airplane mode so no nonsense is given to other features.

I do a lot of hybrid stuff. For the R6; when in photo mode (M, Av, Tv, P, FV, or, C1-3; on menu 9; make sure your "Movie rec quality" is set to 1080p. I had it set to 4K 24p and I got the overheat warning a few times while in photo mode. To be clear, it didn't stop me from taking photos, but as I was shooting photos, the camera was getting warmer and warmer and ultimately over heated for video. Essentially if I wanted to quickly switch to video to grab a few clips, I wouldn't be able to do it (at least in 4K). I was perplexed why I was getting the over heat warning in photo mode. Well it turns out that was the culprit. Essentially the only mode that is in 4K is the video mode and you're only in that mode when you need it. A very small change, but it will make all the difference in overheating for all shooters but especially hybrid shooters.

This is a photo camera with the option to sneak peak, for a limited time, the superior video capabilities of the more expensive models. This is canon's marketing strategy in full display. R6 is a great photo camera and a crippled video camera. No video camera should change its behaviour based on the weather forecast. If you are a videographer in need of good 4K video and a peace of mind, look elsewere. There's no way around it with tips and tricks I'm afraid.

    • @TonyMellinger

I'm afraid I can't stand that constant apprehension of seeing that red flashing sign appearance as happened yesterday before the rings cerimony. Awesome video! Right to the point and it makes the most sense. For years I have been on my crew about leaving cameras on, regardless of camera, it makes zero sense. If you are not shooting, turn it off! I have shot a couple of films already on my R6 and love the footage, it’s about being smart about what you shoot and how to get the most out of your camera. I like what you said and you are right. Be prepared, know the shots you need and get it. Stop over shooting and I am guilty of this myself. Bottom line, it’s about knowing your camera and what you need to shoot to get the job done. Thanks!

I wish there was a little battery operated cooling device we could screw into the bottom of the camera. I ran into this issue yesterday during a live event with the R6M2. I shot it in IBP Light 60P in 4K. It went about 40 minutes then shut down. I turned it off, found the kitchen with a fridge, took the lens off and popped into the fridge. Waited 5 minutes then went back to shooting. 15 minutes later it shut off again. I've only been shooting in 24P up until this shoot although the client requested 60P 4K. I have a Canon C70 and will only use that for now on for these types of shoots. This was honestly a nightmare.

I am a consultant in other fields and sometimes I see junior persons "do stuff" all the time to make sure client thinks they get value for money. Once overheated in a wedding and made me miss part of the ceremony, another time overheated in an interview after 25 minutes 4k 24p C-log, super embarrassing infront of the client. if you gonna use r6 to shoot FULL HD whhhhhhhyyyyyy would you upgrade to this camera then! the only reason I bought it was to get the 10 bit 4k 60p. I should have bought the Sony a7V

Yea, there’s better cameras out there for long form video camera work. Have fun with the Sony though. It has its tradeoffs, but they’re all good cameras these days.

@@TonyMellinger I have the one the R 6 came with, I got the camera with the kit lens… the battery last maybe 2 hours. I have autofocus off, I use my thumb for Av and eye focus. I don’t use the back LCD cause I don’t record . So it stays shut… I only use the view finder… not sure why it burns through the battery.. That’s the only issues I have.. for 3500$ one would think the battery would last a bit longer. So far I am only shooting landscape on a tripod for college using raw and jpg with 2 cards. The cards cost like 500$ for two so they are not cheap cards..

The battery lasting for two hours of video recording is actually pretty good. You have to remember that a mirror less it’s always running the processor to feed you an image so it’s not like a DSLR which has an optical viewfinder…

@@erasmogonzales4470 Sorry I wasn't clear, the processor and imager are running all the time whether you're doing video or not because it has to in order for you to be able to see an image in the viewfinder or screen. Where a dslr doesn't have to produce an image in the viewfinder since its all optical anyway. So mirrorless inherently use more power than dslrs...whether you're shooting video or just photos.

Any experience hybrid shooting 4k60 and stills for extended periods of time?

Yes, check out this video: ruclips.net/video/TAtEyGNdMJw/видео.html During this video I was shooting 4k60 and stills. I didn’t have any problem with overheating. And that was in the summer in Wyoming.

@@TonyMellinger Very nice. The internet makes it sound like the camera is unusable for hybrid coverage in the modes that are supposedly prone to overheating and there's no way I can reliably test that myself, so your experience helps a great deal. What I need from my next camera is the ability to do hybrid photo and 4k60 video coverage of full day weddings, reliably. If the R6 does that - great.
Edit: The video you linked says R5. I was talking about the R6 in 4k60. Supposedly there's a difference between the two in terms of overheating problems.

@@TonyMellinger Have you ever shot on just one? Don't mean to be nosy, just asking because alternating between two would somewhat alleviate the overheating concerns by way of always giving one of the two time to rest and chill down.
Why would I should a wedding on just one? Because one major draw of the RF system for me is the 28-70 f/2, so I don't have to run with two bodies and primes. Of course I'd bring a spare, but I'd prefer not to use it, or maybe shoot only the ceremony with it and the 70-200.

not true. if you shoot 4k59ore 60 p clog, which ist the only professional way to use the r6 (all other formats in HD and 4k30 are producing moire an aliasing mistakes like hell - terrible!!!! !!!!!) than the R6 overheats! Simply true! if somebody gives me al lot of money ore a C300 , i write the opposite. but i would lie than.

I’m not sure I’m totally following. I’m able to get an incredible, useable image out of the R6 in 4k60 or 4k24. I haven’t really used FHD because im so happy with the 4k. The r6 does overheat im 4k60 faster than any other setting though, for sure.

@@TonyMellinger 4k60 ore 4K50p in log mode means 10 bit 4.2.2. (Woh shoot stills only in jpg with 8bit? nobody! so...) even for HD commercials and TV Productions i uses this modes. all the others modes are for Hobby-Prodictions only - with the high risk of skipping lines, whobbles, moire effects / alisian problems, destroing the recorded imsequences. ich wish i could shoot in HD25p c-log for TV Production, but the risk to record trash sequencesis to high. on 20 degress europe temperature my R6 overheats in 4K50p ore 60p after around 35 Minutes. From this point i have to switch of an on every single shot. One trik ist to switch to a foto mode to check light ore the set up. than back to filmcamera to record. this avoids overheating, cause the canon overheats also in standby mode. . :-/ . Tan after overheating the golden Rule is: Every minute i swith off the camera, i can shoot ore be in standby mode afterwords. with the R6 camera it is very hard to do an interview because of overheating. so for longer Intervies i use with big monitor and record the Interviews than in 4K25p/30P ore HD 25P c-Log to spare overheating. But in this case i doublecheck the picture really intensiv on the the big screen, if there is some moire somewhere - ore othe crazy things, that Canon R6 likes to do in tis modes. This is the reality from a professional cameraman. i Also work with other Cameras liks Sony FS7 Fs 9 if companies want me to shoot with tat. So i know the diffferences, Shhoting with the R6 is an dangerous adventure with many problems, but possible!
