Was getting some BTS BROLL at 60fps on the R6 in a house for a wedding shoot and the camera shut down on me for overheating. Never kept the camera on for more the 3 mins and it still over heated. And the kicker I was recording on and Atomos Ninja V!
This is the best R6 related video I’ve seen on RUclips! I’m shooting on a 1DXII and while it’s a beast of a camera, it’s heavy to carry on hikes and on trips. The R6 seems like a no-brainer for me. Great work!
Same, just ordered an R6 to replace the 1DXII (with a battery grip of course, to properly balance my heavier EF lenses) :) Really looking forward to it.
Great video. I do have some comments to add that I found out while doing my research: - while the R5 has 4k120, the files are huge. Definitely something to consider. - the R5 needs to be shot in the higher quality 4k mode, otherwise the 4k is pretty much garbage compared to the R6. But if you do shoot in that mode, the R5 overheats quickly, so the R6 may be better for 4k shooting in general - M1 is the only way to go for h.265 4:2:2 right now. While RTX cards can deal with h.265, they can do so in hardware only for 4:4:4 and 4:2:0 - so for the R6 that will still be useless - v60 cards are a must, as the 4k60 ends up over 40mb/s, so a v30 card could work if it is fast enough, but it is not certified to be fast enough - The R6 has a crop factor in 4k, but it is very small (1.07x), so for the most part can be ignored. Still, technically cropping a tiny bit
Thanks for adding that. I really want to upgrade to make it easier to edit and transcode, but current chip shortages mean it takes a long time to get anything. And Yes! The R6 does have an ever so slight crop factor. You can notice it when switching between 1080 and 4K modes!

The custom feature is essential to most people who mainly do videography, but that would mean that this camera isn’t for them. I do agree, that should be something implemented in the firmware for canon. If the r5 can do it, I see no reason why the r6 can’t. It’s not like it needs a CF card write speed. Good content.
Thanks for the honest detailed review. You showed case in point if you shoot a lot of video beware - 4K overheating in less than 30 minutes? Unacceptable.
M1 mac Mini is $799 and eats through r5/r6 gives. Also, an M1 iPad Pro and the new iPad Mini 6 will eat those files for lunch. Still an extra cost, but not that bad.
I have the R5 and love it.. and going to buy an R6.. I'm selling My EOS-R & 6DMKII to buy the R6. I need 2 dual card slot cams for work and because the 2 cameras work similarly.. the button lay outs will be seamless when transitioning between the two.

I do music, so I usually like to setup my camera at the start and then just keep it running until I get the perfect take. So yesterday, after just 15 minutes, given it was in a pretty toasty room, it overheated while shooting in 4k 25fps, which meant I had to wait for the camera to cool down get 2-3 more takes until it overheated again. This cycle continued for about two hours. I got the take in the end and the footage looks amazing, but it took me SO much longer than it should have...
first off your better off using the NINJA V to record, especially if your recording 4k 60P here are the reasons why.. #1 you get to record to a SSD drive, and you can get a 1TB SSD drive for around $99.00 , if you was to get a 1TB media card your looking well over $300.00.. I believe a 512 GB media card is around $240.00 and that is only half the media space that you can get with A SSD.. #2 Your Camera will never overheat and has no record limit, you can Record 4k60 until your battery runs out or your SSD drive is full. Hours and Hours at a time.. #3 The codec that The Ninja V uses is so much faster then what is built into the Canon Camera, so you will not have to make proxies you can edit the 4k 60p video with out lag.. #4 The Ninja V's Bells and whistles are far better then The Canon ones, meaning the zebra's and false colors and scopes and waves are so much better and more accurate.. #5 recording to a SSD is far safer then the MEDIA cards, ie SD - c-fast cards, the SSD is a hard drive made for a computer, it has far better error correction when writing to the SSD and way less likely to have a Video corruption files, meaning your SD or C-fast cards are more likely to fail and lose your footage then the SSD drives..
I find the R6 has better dynamic range than the R in 1080p. The average person wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but after editing a project with footage from both, the 10-bit video from the R6 definitely has it's advantages!
I’ve always believed that canon purposely does stuff like this to make you WANT to purchase the next camera up. If they gave the R6 everything we asked for then we wouldn’t need an R5.
on my r5 I shoot in 8 bit. It rips on the computer, and it still looks good especially if its for internet. Also I shoot 1080 120 for the same reason, those files are really tuff.
If you want to use r5 4K 10 bit footage with HEVC codec @L5.1 4:4:2 you need GPU/CPU hardware acceleration, fast SSD disk (for example M.2 PCIe NVMe) and editing software that support that hardware acceleration. This might be not cheap PC but it works :)
Hey Anthony! Helpful video man 💪 Quick question below: with what kind of sd card are you recording 4k 50fps standard? Cause I am using sony tough m UHS-II V60 and I am receiving droped frames, even at 4k 25fps 😬 (I also used Lexar 1997 UHS-II V60 it is an UHS-II SDXC v60 and the write speed is much bigger than the required in for 340mbps. I am recording into multiples cards. Any ideas? 🤔
I've had the R6 since it first came out. I was hoping that all the software upgrades would solve the problem. It didn't. I overheated at a College football game in October 2023. I had to remove my lens and stick my camera body in front of fans. After ten minutes it allowed me to shoot a video again. The video overheating kept reappearing throughout the game. 95 degrees on field. Help. Does R6 II overheat?
@@markshirley01 it doesn’t specifically. That is given by LOG Profiles. But 10 bit color gives many more “gradients” between colors and makes them much easier to edit them in post production without creating ugly artifacts, especially when recovering shadows! Hope it helps :)
I've been reading about it all morning. It is definitely a video-first camera. The Lack of IBIS is part of what I don't like, but otherwise it has a lot to offer.
This video was very informative. The talking-head footage looks weird here, you are pink, green, yellow. any idea why? it reminds me of an impacted body part that starts to get to normal skin colour. I wish this video did not have annoying music, it's necessary, and I am not a fan of this music.
Has anyone had their R6 get sluggish when taking like one or two photos and it takes like 30 second to a minute to get back to normal. It’s happen a few times but about a week ago mine wouldn’t even turn off with the power switch and I had to remove the battery, then it happen again when the battery was put back in. It would act normal for a few seconds and then go back to super slow and sluggish or not wanting to take photos. Below are more details and any help would be appreciated. No recent firmware update Tried keeping battery out of it for a minute Tried fresh battery Any ideas?? I had to send my R6 in to Canon and Henry’s (store I purchased the camera from) told me it could be 1-2 months depending on the issue and now I feel naked without my camera 😢. Now I’m having to use my older T6S again (first world struggle) 🇨🇦 but honestly the focusing system is amazing on the R6 to track and get a crazy toddler in focus ha ha.
I have something similar this problem... I'll do a whole bunch of video, then immediately switch to taking photos and the red writing LED stays on... I don't think it has to do with my memory cards. I haven't been able to figure out why this happens.
@@AnthonyGugliotta ok you’re the first one to confirm I’m not crazy lol. Yes the red light stays on and won’t let you do anything. Most of the time it’s less than a minute but last week it was 15 min and I gave up until the next day and I picked up the camera without changing a single thing and it was back to normal. Canon said it’s probably not the SD card in my situation because the camera wouldn’t turn off until I removed the battery. Out of curiosity what SD cards are you using? I was running 2 Samsung EVO plus micro SD (with adapter) and now I have 1 Samsung and 1 Sandisk Extreme Pro (both UHS-I) but fast enough for all modes and haven’t had any issues with buffering. Thanks for the reply. Also thanks for the video giving the heads up and website to check for fall colours up in Algonquin.
@@AnthonyGugliotta mine has only hung up in photo mode that I can remember. Probably happened about 8-10 times in the last year of ownership and got my camera in just before warranty is ending.
@@kore996 YES. Only in Photo mode. I usually am in the middle of a shoot so I'll hard reset by removing the battery. We need to get to the bottom of this.

Interesting.... What were the ambient room temperatures when you were testing? I can barely get passed 40 minutes internally recording to both memory cards.
@@AnthonyGugliotta Room temperature, a little over 70°F… difference could be the fact that you are recording to both cards at the same time. I was only recording to one card. From many other tests I have seen, the actual room temperature doesn’t affect it a whole lot because of the way the camera is sealed…

Agree! So far canon has shown some serious commitment to firmware updates for the R6. Let's hope that trend continues and we get better custom modes!

I got the canon EOS r6 for car photography. Image quality is great. I haven't tried 4k video yet, have tried fullhd so far.

yes you can set custom modes on video. RP does it, so the R6.
Can you explain how. I've tried, and never been able to set the C1, or C2 dials to any custom video settings.

Hi - I usually shoot 1080 for social media - is 10 bit useful for HD.
10 bit has to do with colors, so resolution doesn’t matter. I would say it’s still very useful!

For my r6 I used a v60 Lexar memory card and I had problems using it. Can this use a prograde v60 card without a problem? For 4k 60f

Every time I see the r6 it look yellow

What Sd cards do you use
I ran tests the last two days on all 4k settings… got over 90 minutes straight on 4k24 with no overheating…

My test was with the latest update as well, assuming you have updated to 1.4

Which SD card do you use? Sony Though M V60?
I actually just posted a tiktok on this yesterday. I've been having problems with the Sony V60 cards that cause the R6 to freeze. Im now testing ProGrade V90 cards.

Do a real wedding shoot in 4K +10 Bit then update your experience. In my experience, R5 & R6 are Overheated and stop recording.
