    Hi Jan
Just brought this camera yesterday and it's a revelation after my 1DX ii.
Thanks so much for the set up guide Jan.
I followed your settings but changed a few things:
I've set up the custom buttons to vary the fps with C1 set for 20 fps and Electronic shutter, C2 again e shutter but 40 fps and C3 mechanical shutter 12 fps.
I've also programmed the AF point selection AF point selection button as a 3rd back button set to All area tracking.
Looking forward to your review of the RF 200-800 which I'm considering buying.
    Cheers
    Noel

Great video, Jan. Thanks for all your fantastic footage. I really enjoy watching all of them, even the ones that are not too relevant to me, like this one for instance (I own the R5). I will re-watch the R5 settings video. So far, I was unable to assign the depth of field button with the wide autofocus tracking on my R5, which is something that I used on my 5Div before I changed to the R5.

Thanks for this! I'm a bit late to this party, but I've kept using my R7 for birds, but with the 200-800 I've moved to using my R6II and wanted to come up with advice on the AF modes.
There's one notable difference in the setup I like: since (as you suggest) I don't use the record button in stills mode, I reassign the "dial func" menu (normally on the M-Fn button) to that button. Then the M-Fn button I set to the tracking toggle, which you have set to the DOF preview button. THEN I use the DOF preview as a panic button, in case something unexpected suddenly happens.
This "panic button" mode switches to a different AF setup entirely, trying to pick up a subject in the entire field of view, and widening the acceptable exposure settings. Then if I'm busy trying to get a nice, careful shot of some nesting GBHs in one direction and I suddenly hear a bald eagle making a raid on the rookery, I can pivot, hit the panic button, and hope to grab something.

This is a video I needed. My whole life I had ancient cameras. Which I loved and proved it is not about the gear. Cost a lot of sweat and postprocessing to show that old cameras with a prime are more than competitive.
    20D, 30D and last 10 years 5D Classic (2005 manufacture date).
Two days ago I picked up R6ii and holy moly. Milions of features which do the job for you. Literally. 5Dc could only point with one cross type middle focus point and then you recomposed the frame. Slow fps. Limited DR etc.
Now I feel like in startrek 😅

Massive bonus though was when you briefly mentioned the "Movie Servo AF Speed" this is really useful for slow focus pulls when videoing, and it turns out that my current EOS-R already has the feature but I hadn't realised!!! Thanks again.

I haven´t tried back button focus before because I think my hands are too small to handle it but I´ve decided to give it a go anyway. So to my question. When i focus with the star for eye fokus the square is very big. I hade it on auto since i photograf both animals and people. I tried to change it to animals but still got that big square not letting me know it really just have the focus on the eye and not the whole face (tried on my dog). Did I miss something?

It seems to me that the settings that you have for photo are more effective than for video, the problem is, ike you said, by keeping the photo autofocus buttons for video you will introduce more shake in the footage every time you press the buttons. Great video Jan! I do have one question about the eye detection feature if you could please help!.... I just upgraded from the R6 to the R6 Mk2 and I can't seem set up the auto focus settings the way I had it on my R6. On my previous R6 I had my back AF-On button activate the eye detection tracking focusing on and off, allowing me to switch from spot focusing to eye detection focusing when needed. This was great when I was photographing a person walking towards me and I would need the focus to stay sharp on the subjects face! But now, I see that Canon has eliminated that eye tracking focus feature in the Auto-focus menu on the R6MK2. If i wanted to the set this up on my R6II, what customize focus setting should i set my AF-On button to? Is it (Start/Stop Whole area AF tracking) or (AF on detected subject) or (Eye detection AF) or (Eye detection)??? So many new options when all I want is to track the eye when i want it to! Please help!

Hi Jan, thanks so much for this video! Unfortunately, the method described in here isn’t always working for me. As one or two others mentioned, when I hit the star button for Spot AF only, the camera nevertheless will frequently attempt to track a subject, which often leads to me losing the bird I am attempting to photograph (especially if it’s in dense cover and isn’t immediately apparent to the eye detection AF, necessitating the use of Spot AF). Do you know why this might be happening and is there an additional fix to get it to stop (or perhaps I missed something)? Thanks!

I'm trying to understand the "retract lens on power off" thing. Does the RF 35mm F1.8 extend automatically? I have an EF 24-70 that extends manually for zoom (also an EF 70-200). Will this lens be ok if I disable "retract lens on power off"? I'm guessing it's different because it dows not extend to focus, only to zoom, whereas the RF 35mm doesn't zoom. Great video, thanks!

Yes, it affects lenses where you don’t manually zoom, but the lens protrudes in an out by itself basically

Thanks. I bought your PDF. Much easier that start and stop video. Help! I had my 5D4 set so C1 did a three shot bracket. I switch to C1 and press the shutter and it did three images automatically. I have on my new R6 Mark II C1 set to a three shot bracket but I can't figure out how to make it do all three shots with one shutter push. I set it up on y 5D4 many years ago and I nit longer can figure out the setting. Can you help please!

Hi Jan, thanks for the great video. Just want to confirm your worklow on the field. Please correct me if I am wrong.
By default you have the AF set to (Spot focus, Servo, Eye detection-off, tracking-off, subject detection-animal). You set the focus point either using the joy stick or top-right corner of the screen. Hit the "*" button to acquire focus. Hit the "AF-ON" button to enable eye detection. Hit the front button to enable/disable tracking. The last 2 buttons not necessarily in the same order.
This would really help understand your workflow. I own a R7 and would like to see if your workflow helps me improve my keeper rate.
    Thnx in advance👍

I usually only hit the AF-on button and only when the eye tracking doesn’t find the bird or misses I will use the * button.
The button on the front I almost never use

Does the Canon RF 800mm f/11 have the same focus zone limitation on the R6 II (as the R5 and R6 where you only get a tiny box), or is it like the R3, where you get to use most of the zone?

I only started playing around with it this afternoon to learn to use it (watching your video) and am concerned by the whirring noise it makes when I switch it on (no rattling when it's switched off as somebody else mentioned). Is this normal? Or did I buy a lemon?

    Hi!
I don't recommend using cRAW, take a couple of shots with dark exposure in RAW and cRAW, and then add the exposure in Ligntroom to normal. After that, zoom in on these two pictures and see what happens there. cRAW saves pictures with some strange step of skipping between pixels.
And if you have such a situation where you accidentally take an important shot with underexposure, then this picture will already be unsuitable for work.
And it happened that you want to tighten the shadows and there is a mess of pixels.
    So, RAW only ;)
Thank you for this video, it's useful!

I did all the tests and find the difference negligible. The only real IQ difference I see is between the 14 bit mechanical shutter and 12 bit electronic, that is a lot more.

Great video! Been waiting for this... I had mine set to most of your recommended settings and your video filled in the blanks to make it perfect. However, I did find one quirk that I hope you can explain and show a fix for. At 22:00, you show how to set up the star button. This works great when shooting horizontal but If I go vertical, it stops working and seems to go to a wide area multi-point AF.

Hi Jan, it would be great if you could lose a few words about your ISO and shutter speed settings. I nearly have the same settings for wildlife photography but in the orange menu, tab 2 I set the shutter speed range to 1/1000 - 1/16000 (electronic). With an open aperture, the ISO settings is the only parameter which is controlled by the camera. How do you prevent the camera to shoot with a shutter speed longer than 1/1000 which will often result in blurry images (e.g.when the bird is moving)?

for anyone who comes after me - i found the answer - you need to assign a button (I used SET button) to "direct select of sub to detect" which lets you toggle the function on and off. Might pay to remove the less needed objects to detect from the list to make toggle faster. Good luck

I like how you went through all the settings, but I think the title of this clip is a lil misleading. I mainly shoot people, weddings, portraits and adult images. These settings a aimed more for the wildlife, nature and landscape photography and not the settings that I would want shooting a wedding, or in a studio with lights.

His settings are great for all round photography but where it differ would be with events and portraits in regards to the AF / Metering / Eye Focus / Shutter Buttons.
When shooting fast-moving events and portrait sessions, it can cause some setbacks.
Outside of that, everything is solid.

Hey Jan, my new r6ii has finally arrived and im excited to use. However, i notice a horrible rattle noise as if something inside was loose. I have then researched this, and apparently, it's normal for the IBIS to make this noise on r6ii amd other mirrorles when the camerea is turned off. My worry is that i planned to go on hikes, adventures, sufaris etc where the camera will be bouncing around in a bag. Will this not damage parts of the camera (pixels, ibis, etc)?

Hi Jan, I wanted to share my experience with the R6 Mark II camera that I recently purchased. Overall, I'm quite satisfied, but I've encountered a particular issue related to the LCD screen (Viewfinder seems to have no issue). When using the LCD to compose my shots, I've noticed a significant lag in the shutter response. For instance, when my son starts to smile and I press the shutter button, I expect the camera to capture the moment he smiles. Unfortunately, there seems to be a delay, and it ends up capturing the moment after he smiles, which could be less than half a second later. Similarly, when I try to capture the precise moment when someone's eyes open, the camera tends to capture moments when their eyes are closed. As a result, we've ended up with many photos like this when using the LCD screen. Interestingly, we didn't experience any similar issues with our Canon RP camera. This has led me to wonder if there might be a problem with my R6 Mark II, as I'm concerned about the possibility of receiving a defective unit. I was wondering if you have any insights into what might be causing this issue. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Quick question for you.. In photo mode, I want to be able to just press the record button and record video. I was told this will default to the video settings that are saved in move mode, in C3. So, I flip the camera to movie mode, set the exposure the way I want for video and save in c3. Great. Then, back to photo-mode and off I go taking photos. When I press the record button, it starts shooting video, but its not at all the settings I saved. Its in some type of auto mode? Its weird. How can I fix this?

    • @jan_wegener

    • @travisharrisphotography
      @travisharrisphotography 6 месяцев назад

Ah! Okay, well that would explain it then. I guess on the R6 II it's less of an issue (now that I think about it) as there is a dedicated button to switch over, so I guess I could just get the video settings the way I want first, in that mode, switch to photo, shoot etc.. then, its just a matter of flipping the switch to switch over and start recording. Still pretty fast.@@jan_wegener
