Thanks Jan! The day Canon announces 3rd party RF lenses I will order the R6 Mk II. Until then, I'll continue to enjoy my R7 and the handful or RF lenses I could afford.
I'm so glad we no longer have the expense of constantly having to buy film and pay for processing! Nowadays, all we have to do is buy a new camera every couple of years!!
Haha true. I've started shooting film again just for a bit of fun. People complain about the prices of film but the price of gear is so much cheaper and currently happily using a 50 year old camera.
My main camera is a Canon 6D. It produces beautiful images and you can pick them up for under $300. The argument for shooting old film cameras applies to old digital cameras. Digital cameras were plenty good enough 10 years ago but people have been tricked into believing that once great cameras suddenly became bad cameras. The amazing Canon 5D mk2 is still an amazing camera but it's dropped in price by $2500.

Great review Jan. Have been using the R6 Mark II since late February. My first full-frame camera (had previously been using EOS M5 and EOS 7D). As a serious hobbyist the R6 Mark II hits the sweet spot for price and functionality. I’ve been shooting landscapes and birds with it on lenses from 16mm to 600mm and it’s been great. AF is amazing in every respect. I have the battery grip and can shoot for 4 hours and still have 30% remaining in the two batteries. Rolling shutter is a problem with flying/panning birds, but otherwise is fine. I bought the R6m2 as a hybrid camera, but haven’t spent as much time shooting video as I planned. The HD high frame rate video looks good and I can manage without 4K much of the time. One feature I like is the auto focus-bracketing and in-camera focus stacking. The stacked JPEGs are great, though I still usually go through the process of stacking the RAW files in Photoshop (the in-camera stacking algorithm is better though!)
Awesome video and honest comparisons with your other Canon gear. Owning the r6 1, I find that I am constantly having to stop myself stop from tossing the old for the new. As always, keep up the good work and keep'em flying...👽
Thank you so much Jan for the very helpful and informative review of Canon R6 Mark II, can't wait to watch your video reviewing R6 Mark III in near future! God bless, good luck and keep creating!
Can’t wait for your setup video. I have your setup book for the R7 and was hoping for something similar for my new r6mkii. These two camera bodies are all I need they are awesome.
Thanks for the vid Jan, i to am not getting the MII, but for different reasons, being an amateur with a budget, I ordered the R8 which has all the good stuff I want and the stuff they left out I don’t really need I don’t do video so don’t miss that, battery size no big deal since I owned a RP and have a bunch of extra batteries, in body IBIS would have liked but with the lenses these days I think I’ll have enough. Thanks again 👀👀
I totally agree. I ran out and bought an R6 ii, as soon as it came out, because I needed a 2nd body to my R5. I fell in love with 40 fps. The AF was a little better than my R5, and when I put my 800 F11 on it blew me away .. BUT I shoot a lot of small skittish birds and I end up cropping a lot of images. I also like shooting a little wide to final compose in post. The R 5 spoiled me. So I traded the R6 for a 2nd R5 and hope one of the updates will give us an AF upgrade. I miss the 40 fps!
As someone who has been happily in DSLR-land for years now, I am somewhat surprised to find myself giving serious consideration to picking up an R6 Mk II. My 7D Mk II is brilliant with a 24-105, and my 1DX Mk II loves my 100-400. I still have my original 300D, 20 years old now, and also a 20D for more casual shooting. But given the affordable (ish) price point of the R62, and the fact that I could still use all of my Canon EF/EF-S lenses with the EF-RF adapter, I don't know; this really could be a consideration. Christmas is coming, after all…
Great review! The lower megapixels is actually appealing to me as a wedding photographer, where I'm shooting 1000+ images and storage becomes an issue. My online print service won't even let me upload 50 mp images anyway because the files are so big. Everything else as you say seems like a "no brainer!"
storagw is an issue? lol? SSDs are exrremely cheap and after deleting Bad Photos it takes not much space. on my R5 I Shoot 45mp files, 20 MB craw compressed. easy! and for cuatomers I Export 6000px Photos with about 1,5 MB / jpg file. you are doing something wrong in your Workflow
That is a good point at 7:27, the pre-burst must now finally come to the R3 with the next firmware upgrade. Canon, do you hear me? Did you get it? It’s mandatory!
totally agree ! 24 mpix are enough for my current needs so upgrading from the r6 to the mk2 was really a no brainer. i invested in good glass rather than the "aging" r5 ... just because I wanted/needed the snappier camera available. depending on how my photographic journey evolves ... I might eventually get my hands on a next gen high end body (r5mk2 or ....R1) one can dream :) great to have you back Jan ! thanks for the great and inspiring content 🙏
the r6ii is absolutely and definitively sh1te in low light focusing. Did a dancing event and could not hit the mark most of the time, which is embarrassing for a paid gig. Had to revert to the 5diii I had luckily brought along and THAT worked better. And yes, I tried different AF modes etc and was on case 2.
I did the same as you Igor. I also did LOTS of testing and upscaling the R6 files to 45 MP in Adobe Camera Raw when needed looks almost the same as the R5 files. If you use the "Enhance Super Resolution" feature in Adobe Camera Raw/LR, the results are actually better from the R6 II over the R5. This is a win/win because I get smaller files for daily use (though 24 MP is large enough for any size print... I've had 8 MP files on ads/billboards that look stunning) and when needed (like cropping) I can just use the Enhance feature and output in ACR/LR to my desired MP.
Moving from Nikon D500 to Canon and wondering what you think would be a better fit R7 or R62. I generally do sports and family pictures. Thanks. Glad you are feeling well again.
Exactly. If the R7 had the controls, displays, and readout speed of the R5, it could be my only birding camera. I would gladly pay a significantly higher price for it. For me, the R7 is . . . almost there. But not quite.
Jan, really looking forward to your video on setting up the R6 MII, I'm having a problem getting single point to not jump all over the screen using BBF. I turned off whole area AF, you mention at 10:38 in this video you mention spot AF "without tracking" I have all the tracking turned off but the point still jumps around, would love to hear your specifics for setting up the dbl BBF on this camera. I even called Canon but they could not answer my question.
Thanks for your great review of R6 ll. I have already planned for upgrading my R6 to R6 ll, but I was waiting for your video about R6ll in real fields and suggestion.
If you don’t do video, and you already have an R6, there’s no sense going to an R6II. I do stills only, and I like to print my images. I can’t see a difference in an A1 size gallery print taken with an R5, let alone an R6II. The AF of the R6 is fantastic. The only improvement the II brings is recognizing airplanes and zebras, neither of which are subjects I’ll be shooting. The low light performance and dynamic range are pretty identical. As for the ergos, since I don’t shoot video, making the left dial a dedicated stills-video switch is not an improvement for me but an annoyance. I’m used to the on-off switch being on the left from my decade of using the 5DIII. The dial where it is now is the one I have assigned to shutter speed on my R6. The on-off there would just be in the way. Others like the new position so you could turn on the camera and shoot one-handed. Maybe if I go rock climbing and am hanging from a ledge with my left hand this would be beneficial. But as a traditional photographer, who cares? Faster burst speed for action and sports isn’t critical to me either. If it were, I wouldn’t be looking at an R6II, I’d save up and get an R3. As it is, there’s nothing so compelling about the MkII that would make me trade in my R6 after only a year and a half. Then again, I’m not a gear head who stand on line at the Apple Store to be first to get every single iPhone the minute it goes on sale. The sensor of the R6 is the one that was in the 1DXMkIII and so is the processor. The images are almost identical. That’s good enough for me for the foreseeable future. I’ll look again when the R6MkIII comes out. Or, better yet, I’ll stay happy with the R6 through all its iterations and then look at an R1, for which I’ll spend less than those who who were compelled to buy the R6, R6II, R6III and R6IV.
Love your channel. Your rewiews and guides are simply the best. I am in need of some advice now and i believe you are the man to ask. To my misfortune i started out as a Nikon- shooter. That was all fine and good when i only shot landscapes and such. But at some point i turned to nature-photography, and birds especially. That also worked great with my D500, until the mirrorless train came rolling in. I`ve been sitting on the fence for a couple of years now, hoping for Nikon to catch up with the eye-auto focus, but all the rewiews i look at shows me that not even the high-end Nikon bodies is on par with the mid range bodies from Canon and Sony. I`m loosing patience and am starting to look to Canon, and especially the R6 II. My budget sadly restrict me to a Zoom lens, like the Nikon 200-500 f/5,6 witch i`ve been using up to this point with my D500 and Z6II. I`ve been waiting for the new Nikon 180-600 mm to get in stock and was set on buyng that, but i think i`ve lost faith in Nikon to deliver bodies in the future with eye-autofocus as good as Canon does. At least in my budget-range. And if i were to make the switch to canon,...is there a Canon lens currently that can compare to the new Nikon 180-600 mm (internal zoom, short zoom-throw etc.). I believe the Nikon glass is excellent,....it`s just that eye-autofocus. Apologize in advance for my english writing. I`m sure there are some errors, since i`m Norwegian :-) Kind regards from Stian in the north of Norway :-)
Hello Stian! I think that the Canon rf 200-800 would be great for you, it’s a bit expensive but I think it’s your only choice. /from Malte in South Sweden
An insightful video. As a Nikon shooter, I’m always interested to see what else is out there. The one thing I don’t get is why all camera manufacturers don’t have at least one CF Express Type B card for being able to shoot a high number of shots and/or video. And they are much more robust.
Great review, Jan! I must say, I really hate the positioning of the on/off switch and video switch, I think it would be much better if they were positioned other way around. I realized when I was shooting hand held with big telephoto lens and wanted to quickly do some video I had to remove my left hand supporting the lens, take the camera down, away from my face, and switch to video, which is ridiculous. I really love video switch positioning in R3, which is the same as in every Canon in the last 15 years or so, and you're able to do it with single hand, by simple move of a thumb, very quickly, while holding the camera without need to move it and affect the balance, keeping your workflow easy and streamlined. Sometimes I wonder if people at Canon who come up with these changes even use cameras in real life scenarios.
If it is like the R5, when in stills mode, the red record button on the right side will jump to whatever video settings you save as custom function three. I find it very handy when I’m shooting a mix of video and stills for sports.
Coming from m43 I decided to try the canon kool-aid and bought an R7 and started my RF lens collection. The R7 has been awesome and I would like to try a full frame body but I like to shoot flowers and portraits and make posters out of them so I feel like I don't want to step down on the megapixels. I will probably hold out for a R5 mark ii even if its a year or so off.
@@jan_wegener still learning my camera and Im using sigma lens 150-600 contemporary cant wait to use canon lens in near future especially 100-500 since im in aviation photography and doing live videos. I noticed on my shots using my lens are the lines where not straight thinking the heat from the sun making waves. can you make a video of it too...
As always, a very good and informative video Jan. And the pictures was just amazing. Not that that is something new heheheh. Have a great week, and looking forward to your next video. Cheers, Bjoern
Very interesting video, it mentions some of the camera's limits. As an A7iv user desperate to get sharp pictures of subjects moving towards the camera under any circumstances, I would have liked to see a test including a low contrast subject moving fast towards the camera in low light.
I hope some cool photo features trickle down to R5 via firmware. I can't see why R5 couldn't take 30fps with its 15,5ms sensor, and do pre-burst shooting with its CFExpress cards.
You can record video from the stills mode by pressing the record button. I think it just uses your current shutter and iso setting with whatever frame rate you have set in the menu.
Great, informative video as usual Jan. In view of your recent video offering advice about camera failures, I have the R5, but I am thinking of ordering an R8 as a backup camera, being cheaper than the R6MK2 and yet apparently having good AF. Any thoughts on that, please?
Please Canon. Give us a R5 boost with better autofocus (better detection, auto detection and addional subjects detection an better detection in low light) and focus breathing improvements. These things are already good but a boost would be so much appreciated. Please......
The image quality through the lens you are using in this video is incredible. What lenses are you using ? For Canon for birding photography which would you say is the best option for a camera? I am currently using Fuji but have owned and used Canon years ago (40D). I had back then a 300mm F4 L but I expect things have moved forward these days. Thinking of potentially switching either to Sony or Canon but I think Canon has more lenses for wildlife.
I'm getting into full frame with this camera. Coming from a Canon 80D, the ergo is similar, maybe slightly better. And then after that R6II is just A LOT better in like every way. Granted, it's not fair comparing it to a 7 year old APS-C sensor camera. Im most impressed with the low light performance, AF, video capabilities, and 40 fps H+ mode.
I'm in awe of your knowledge of all the details of these cameras. Love the way you present it, since it's not just theoretical facts, but almost everything's personally tested by you in the field. Thus very authentic.
Hi Jan, I had both and wish that the R5 allowed you to shoot 4K HQ in 50 fps…anyway, could I ask you what equipment and setting you used to film yourself on this particular video? The quality is pretty awesome yet not intrusive on the eye. Thank you, Alan
Hi Jan, thanks for this great review! But most of all I enjoyed the awesome birds who nicely illustrated your points 😀 Which one was taking a bath around 8:40 ?? Many had been hoping to get several of these software improvements in the R5, but fw 1.8.1 only providing 402mp jpegs was rather a cold shower for us birders ..
Its a Spotted Bowerbird It sure was. From a PR standpoint I would've thought at least giving people something they thought was coming would've made sense.Even if it's just removing the ridiculous recording limit
@@jan_wegener Okay, yet another awesome bird who only lives in Australia 😛 Seems like there are very many good reasons with wings why you moved there from Deutschland, heheh. I'm getting the feeling it may be exactly because of PR we are now only getting this (for us) silly pixelshift fw. Canon may assume they needed this me-too feature against the Sony a7-R5, but understood some of its limitations would be underwhelming for certain audiences. So I hope they "isolated" this feature in fw 1.8.1, while keeping "our wow features" in say a fw 2.0 coming in 1 or 2 months .. that way the potential critics on this feature won't distract from the upcoming good stuff 🤞
@@jan_wegener I understand from Simon (Ordinary Filmmaker) he has confirmation from Craig Blair (CR) that (most of) the other rumored fw features are still to be expected. Let's hope it's not a salami strategy with half a feature every 2 months ;-)
@@WernerBirdNature I had heard there was more too, but I am going easy on the FW stuff now. There’s some other things coming I am certain about so I will run with those soon
I've had the R6.since intro and thought the R6ii would be a big upgrade. Not so. Af is the same. R6ii has slightly better video specs and no re ordong time limit. If those aren't important then stay with the R6. I returned the ii.
Very good review Jan - perfect timing as I will at last upgrade my old 40D to the R6 II in a couple of weeks - it is great to be comforted it is a very good choice.I know the is now your usual range but would you have an opinion about which of 2 lenses you would pick (targeting the best image quality) between the RF 28-70 f/2 L USM (I'm concern there is no IS) and the RF 24-70 f/2.8 L IS USM ? Thank you !
Unless you need F2 for something specific, the 24-7- will be smaller and better to use in the field. The 28-70 is very heavy, big and needs a specific use case to be justified imo.
Thanks Jan for this incredibly helpful and detailed review. One question. Do you find the AF to be more confident and accurate (ie. perhaps better AF algorithm) when compared to R3? I don’t really care too much about the speed of AF since my R3 is plenty fast enough. I’m asking more about accuracy and confidence in eye detection stickiness when compared to the R3. Would you say the R6II is better, same, or worse or too difficult to tell? Thanks again for much for the great review and amazing photography
It knows more subjects than the R3 and can sometimes find them from further away. I guess that a function of it being more up to date than the R3, which hasn’t really received an AF update afaik. I think the R3 is overall still the better camera but the R6 II is newer which gives it more updated software at times it seems
Good experience report. It should be added that Canon is very slow to learn and slow to stop crippling the various models. For me, when the R6 and R5 were introduced, the R6 was absolutely uninteresting because: The RP and the R6 have no aperture priority and shutter priority in video mode, the EOS R and the R5 have this choice. The R6 II now too.
Strange that the pre burst mode doesnt just clear the buffer continuesly and produce standard raw files. If it only had to clear that last shot you could still take slower single shots instead of being completely blocked. Anyways a very good camera but I'll wait for the R5 mk2 if that ever comes out as it would be a bigger jump from my regular R6.
Great video. I had been using the R6 Mark II with the EF100-400 II lens and 1.4x III TC. I had watched your video on EF 100-400 II vs the RF 100-500mm, but still can't decide should I upgrade my EF 100-400mm II. May I get your opinion? Thanks.😂
At 10.11 on the video which is so helpful can you explain the settings that prevent the eye detect from jumping between different birds in the same frame? And similarly how do you set the eye auto focus to stay one bird and not another? I ask with reference to groups of actors or people at an event. I want to choose a particular face in a group and then choose another. Thanks for any input please
I’ve just upgraded my 6D MK1 to this! The difference is huge! I wanted to ask what lens you would recommend with this camera to shoot wildlife? I currently run with a (old) G1 Tamron 70-200 F/2.8, but I notice it lacks zoom quite often. My budget is unfortunately not reaching the 600mm F4, but I’m happy to pay a bit for a great zoom lens! Thanks in advance!
So I need to really upgrade to something as I only have the canon 60D which does not suit my needs as I am going up the pro ladder. Is the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM compatible with this camera? Thank you. I have rented this lens before but wasn’t sure if it’s compatible with the mirrorless
1:56 - YES. It's like the designers who made the battery grip for the R bodies have never actually seen an EOS R5/6 etc. They look like something from a bad third party manufacturer. Also, now with the new thumbstick style on the R6 II, the one on the grip looks "off" as it is concave vs convex on the body. For a $400 cdn accessory, it's really a bad design. I remember when these were $120 for the DSLR bodies and fit way better.
I am confused between R7 and R6mii. Tempted for the extra reach and MP of R7 but I often get recommended to go with full frame! Any suggestions from anyone? My main purpose would be for wildlife.
Jan, why do you recommend not using digital extender? Is it just the reduced resolution? I would be temped to use APS C mode, that would give me about an 9.4 megapixel image, that would adequate for me. Buy a 24-70mm would give me 24-112mm without any lessening of narrow dof, just by switching mode.
Thanks for the review. I’m currently using the Nikon z6 and depending on what Nikon releases or don't release I might be moving brands so do you think this would be a good choice? I shoot birds, Wildlife, and sports, both motor and people along with landscapes. from what see the autofocus is much better than what nikon has except for the Z9 which is out of my price range. Thanks
One thing I see with R6 is the grid noise pattern at high ISO. 5D Mark iv has bands at high ISO, but not as pronounced. So low light photos quality is not as good as 5D iv.
That's the multi-channel readout interleave pattern and it's perfectly normal to see it under extreme contrast adjustment. Basically, the sensor readout is performed simultaneously on 6 channels (6 rows of pixels at a time, for speed reasons), and those channels might have slightly different amplifier gains. But if you see it without any contrast adjustment, then you may need to contact Canon service.
I think that the 1.8.0 firmware update for the original R6 I proved the auto focus significantly. I wonder how it compares to the mark Ii. Viewing the auto focus in this clip, it seemed similar to what I get With Mark I.
Hi Jan I just received the r6ii And ordered the grip bgr10 Just wondering if you can charge the grip with power bank if you out for long trip If yes could you please recommend which one Thank you
Thanks for this great review! It seems like the R6 Mark II is a really good camera. But I miss a couple things. More MP for cropping. The headup display, which I often use. The display of the "old" R5 is better than that of the R6 Mark II. Why 2 SD card slots? I would prefre to have 2 CF Exprex card slots. Sure, the R6 Mark II has options that I would also like to have in my R5. For example Pre-Burst or RAW-Burst as Canon calls it. I was hoping that with the firmware update the R5 will have the pre-burst feature. But what the firmware 1.8.1 has to offer is more of a bad joke. At least for me. Maybe there are some photographers who will use the IBIS High resolution shot. Which ultimately can only be used if nothing, absolutely nothing, is moving. I'm wondering about the usefulness of this feature, which only works in JPG format. Anyway - It is like it is and the R5 is still my preferen camera body and I’ll wait for the R5 Mark II or something similar. Greetings from Uwe, who is frustrated with view to R5 firmware 1.8.1. Frankfurt a.M., Germany
R6 Mark II is the best camera I've ever used, by far, and I've shot as a pro for 18 years.
Yes it’s very good
I am a lifelong birdwatcher and this is the best, most encouraging camera review I have seen yet. Subtle, but prefer Canon image to Nikon's.

Yes, the 40 fps and improved AF were so nice to work with! I will miss it too
You can try r7 with 800 f11 - 33mpix and decent croping ability of 1260mm fov on sunny say! I have this combo like 1 month and this is awesome .
I have R7 and RF 800mm F/11. In good light this combo is hard to beat.
Wow cannon put open CV on the r6! That's the tracking you see on the camera
Christmas is coming, after all…
I’d think you’d be surprised…in a positive way
Jan - Really enjoying your videos. Lots of great advice and the images and video clips are just fantastic! Thank you and keep up the great work!
Thanks Jim
Great review! The lower megapixels is actually appealing to me as a wedding photographer, where I'm shooting 1000+ images and storage becomes an issue. My online print service won't even let me upload 50 mp images anyway because the files are so big.
Everything else as you say seems like a "no brainer!"
Yes, if the mpix are no disadvantage you then it's really a no brainer
Go for it. For wedding R6II is awesome. I am using R3 and R6 mk II and it is such a great combo☺️
storagw is an issue?
Thank you, I'm waiting for the settings and best tricks vidéo !
I might eventually get my hands on a next gen high end body (r5mk2 or ....R1)
one can dream :)
great to have you back Jan !
thanks for the great and inspiring content 🙏
Thanks for sharing
the r6ii is absolutely and definitively sh1te in low light focusing. Did a dancing event and could not hit the mark most of the time, which is embarrassing for a paid gig. Had to revert to the 5diii I had luckily brought along and THAT worked better. And yes, I tried different AF modes etc and was on case 2.
@@pal54321 Why wouldn't you use manual focus and use zone method ? People did it for over 70 years using film cameras with no issues.
@@tdunster2011 at fast moving objects? Nope.
Unless you need the reach the R6 II is the better camera overall
A really nice review. It sounds like a great camera. I wish everything you said applied to the R7 but, maybe in the Mark 2 version of that camera.
So do I. I will have another R7 video coming soon, too
Exactly. If the R7 had the controls, displays, and readout speed of the R5, it could be my only birding camera. I would gladly pay a significantly higher price for it. For me, the R7 is . . . almost there. But not quite.
I think more mm and mp are where it's at baby!
Curious to know why you prefer the ergonomics of the R6MKII even over the R5?
yes I want to find out your set up. Where is that video on your channel?
Great job. Thanks
It's from maybe a couple months ago
Jan, really looking forward to your video on setting up the R6 MII, I'm having a problem getting single point to not jump all over the screen using BBF. I turned off whole area AF, you mention at 10:38 in this video you mention spot AF "without tracking" I have all the tracking turned off but the point still jumps around, would love to hear your specifics for setting up the dbl BBF on this camera. I even called Canon but they could not answer my question.
Awesome video Jan! 🎉
Thank you!! 😁
Thanks for your great review of R6 ll. I have already planned for upgrading my R6 to R6 ll, but I was waiting for your video about R6ll in real fields and suggestion.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi! I am eagerly waiting for your total setup of r6 mark2. Thanks for the excellent videos
Coming soon!
Very good post. Useful too, thanks 👍🏻
Brilliant video mate, such a great value camera. Cheers, Duade
Glad you enjoyed it
Love your channel.
I'm currently using Nikon and have a z6ii. Been doing some canon window shopping..... Hoping the z8 is a mini z9!
That would be great!
An insightful video. As a Nikon shooter, I’m always interested to see what else is out there. The one thing I don’t get is why all camera manufacturers don’t have at least one CF Express Type B card for being able to shoot a high number of shots and/or video. And they are much more robust.
That is a great question
How are things going over there in the Nikon camp these days ? I saw a clip of the new Z8 the other day which looked good.
Yes it’s a good idea to have a switch but the position is bad.
That only works on the R5 and R3
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always Jan🤗👍👌
You are so welcome!
Coming from m43 I decided to try the canon kool-aid and bought an R7 and started my RF lens collection. The R7 has been awesome and I would like to try a full frame body but I like to shoot flowers and portraits and make posters out of them so I feel like I don't want to step down on the megapixels. I will probably hold out for a R5 mark ii even if its a year or so off.
amazing. thank you for the tips. will try that c raw.
Great!
Sticking withmy K3-III. Still getting great wildlife shots and I can't see any reason to switch to mirrorless.
As always, a very good and informative video Jan. And the pictures was just amazing. Not that that is something new heheheh. Have a great week, and looking forward to your next video.
Cheers, Bjoern
Thank you! 😃
Very interesting video, it mentions some of the camera's limits. As an A7iv user desperate to get sharp pictures of subjects moving towards the camera under any circumstances, I would have liked to see a test including a low contrast subject moving fast towards the camera in low light.
You will be hard pressed to find any camera that can do that consistently
Thank you. this is exactly what i was looking for and just confirmed what i was thinking. im off to pck one up right now, after a coffee :)
Awesome!
Awesome video .... should i exchange my canon 80 d ????
I can't tell you what to do, but the R6 II a much superior camera
Thank you so much for sharing. That was well explained 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
You are so welcome
Be intresting what canon r5 ii will bring when ever they drop that
I hope some cool photo features trickle down to R5 via firmware. I can't see why R5 couldn't take 30fps with its 15,5ms sensor, and do pre-burst shooting with its CFExpress cards.
Yeah, Canon are playing with us! I think they can easily release a firmware update with those features updated!!
You can record video from the stills mode by pressing the record button. I think it just uses your current shutter and iso setting with whatever frame rate you have set in the menu.
Yes, but that means it’s kind of useless unfortunately, because it usually uses a way too high shutter speed then
@@jan_wegener it will record whatever video settings you save in custom function three in the video menu (if it is similar to the R5), no?
@@unknownKnownunknowns no, only the R5 and R3 do that
Great, informative video as usual Jan. In view of your recent video offering advice about camera failures, I have the R5, but I am thinking of ordering an R8 as a backup camera, being cheaper than the R6MK2 and yet apparently having good AF. Any thoughts on that, please?
Haven’t used it yet, so not sure. What’s nice about the R6 II is that the buttons are basically the same compared to R5. R8 has different handling
Please Canon. Give us a R5 boost with better autofocus (better detection, auto detection and addional subjects detection an better detection in low light) and focus breathing improvements. These things are already good but a boost would be so much appreciated. Please......
Looking forward to get this one very soon. How's the shutter shock? On r7 is very bad at under 1/400 or so..
nothing like the R7
Great review and interesting findings, Jan!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Canon 100-500 RF and 4/600 RF
I'm getting into full frame with this camera. Coming from a Canon 80D, the ergo is similar, maybe slightly better.
And then after that R6II is just A LOT better in like every way. Granted, it's not fair comparing it to a 7 year old APS-C sensor camera. Im most impressed with the low light performance, AF, video capabilities, and 40 fps H+ mode.
Yes coming from a dslr this is a whole new world
Thanks Jan. Does it have eye tracking AF like the R3?
Yes
@@jan_wegener thank you. I meant to say ‘eye control’ auto focus. That would be great if it trickled down to other cameras.
@@unknownKnownunknowns that only the R3 has
@@jan_wegener thank you
I'm in awe of your knowledge of all the details of these cameras.
I usually film with an R3 and 24-105 in 4K25p
Jan, you’re a great reviewer! Subscribed
Thank you! Lots more to come
Hi Jan, thanks for this great review! But most of all I enjoyed the awesome birds who nicely illustrated your points 😀
Which one was taking a bath around 8:40 ??
Many had been hoping to get several of these software improvements in the R5, but fw 1.8.1 only providing 402mp jpegs was rather a cold shower for us birders ..
Its a Spotted Bowerbird
It sure was.
@@WernerBirdNature let’s hope so
@@jan_wegener I understand from Simon (Ordinary Filmmaker) he has confirmation from Craig Blair (CR) that (most of) the other rumored fw features are still to be expected.
The AF accuracy of the R6 has been improved with firmware 1.7.0. so I wonder if that's why you don't see any difference in AF performance anymore.
Great video,thanks for share.
Quick question, if you had to choose between the R6 II & R5, which would it be ?
It depends in what type of fotography you gonna use.
R6 mark II would’ve been perfect if it had more megapixels 😕 I’m still waiting for the R5 mark II, weren’t they going to announce it last month?? 😩😩😩
Yes that would be a better way to use it
Another superb review. Many thanks!😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video. I had been using the R6 Mark II with the EF100-400 II lens and 1.4x III TC. I had watched your video on EF 100-400 II vs the RF 100-500mm, but still can't decide should I upgrade my EF 100-400mm II. May I get your opinion? Thanks.😂
Only you can decide what to do with your hard earned money, but I definitely have a preference personally for the RF
Very cool. thannks. would like to see your setuup
Coming soon!
Jan, what did you think of the build quality of the R6II?
It felt very nice to me. But obviously I would not really want to soak it in heavy rain etc
You can set the number of subjects within the autofocus menus. I just got my R62 so I maybe doing a poor job at describing how it works.
Thanks for another terrific video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Maybe 100-500 or if true there might be a 200-800 soon
I'm completely beginner and do photography as a hobby on weekends. Do you suggest R6 Mark II ? Do I need to pay more for R5 for higher megapixels?
I think as a total beginner there’s probably more budget friendly options like an R8 or R10 for instance. I don’t think you’ll need an R5 to get going
I am confused between R7 and R6mii. Tempted for the extra reach and MP of R7 but I often get recommended to go with full frame!
Any suggestions from anyone?
My main purpose would be for wildlife.
R6 markII seems to be more active than R3 in focusing, and it is easier to find the right target? Including in video mode?
it's very good, probably the best Canon camera atm when it only comes to AF
Great vid, thanks.
The digital Tc seems it be different to drop mode. It’s jpeg only and the quality is not great
I'm thinking about ordering the r6 Mark II body only, but I was wondering what lens to order for the best all-around canon len ?
Depends what you want to photograph, but 24-105 is an excellent Allrounder
There’s also some cheap stm prime lenses available like the 35/1.8
hello Jan ... i only need the R3 .. i have the R7 and R6mk2 ... but so fare for birds ... i only use the R7 .. when i croppe i like the 32.5 mp
Thanks
It’s definitely a good Allrounder. Will be interesting to see what Nikon has on offer this year. Surely we will see a few new bodies one would hope
@@jan_wegener I hope so as the only other affordable option currently from Nikon is almost 3 years old
One thing I see with R6 is the grid noise pattern at high ISO.
@@10vid5 Thanks for the explanation. I only see this with high ISO and in deep dark areas.
I think that the 1.8.0 firmware update for the original R6 I proved the auto focus significantly. I wonder how it compares to the mark Ii. Viewing the auto focus in this clip, it seemed similar to what I get With Mark I.
The R6 II just knows more subjects and typically from a bit larger distance.
Hi Jan
I just received the r6ii
And ordered the grip bgr10
Just wondering if you can charge the grip with power bank if you out for long trip
If yes could you please recommend which one
Thank you
not sure to be honest. There's no port on the grip, but you can probably charge via the usb c port in the camera
Great advice thanks
Thanks!
I guess that camera would be the R5 Mark II ;)
Yes, some more exciting FW update would have been good for sure.
