    I own an R8, and had the "overheating" issue with it, but only after owning it for about 6 weeks, and shooting more than 1,000 pictures (I bought mine the day it was released). My overheating problem was earlier this week, shooting stills (I don't shoot video), single shot, in 70 degree, low humidity weather. I wasn't doing anything that should cause the camera to overheat, and in the week's prior to this, including shooting in Arizona near the end of April when temperatures had already spiked into the triple digits, the camera didn't have any overheating problems. I do not believe the camera is overheating, it just thinks it is. Maybe some kind of issue with the onboard computer misreading whatever temperature sensing device is in use? I called Canon support, and they asked me to send it in for service, which I did. Canon got it on Thursday (yesterday), and by Friday (today) it's already on it's way back, with a message that it's operating normally. Obviously, I don't believe that. I have owned and used many Canon cameras for many years, and most recently, the Canon EOS R. It was used in all kinds of weather, including very hot desert temps and NEVER overheated. The same with a Canon M50 I use while backpacking. There is an issue with this camera that Canon needs to address, but since the problem doesn't seem to be widespread, it may be hard to get their attention.
    For people who say "buy a better camera", I say BS. NO camera, regardless of price, should be overheating when shooting stills when it's only 70. Or even 100 for that matter.

    Thanks for the video. I agree with you completely. I own the R8 and R6 mk1 and I’m a working event photographer in Houston Tx. Fortunately for me I haven’t experienced the overheating, maybe due to me using the R8 as a B cam while simultaneously shooting w/ 2 bodies. So I haven’t put as much stress on it yet. I trust that a new firmware is already being developed.

    return the R8. the only way companies respond is when they have to loose money and resell as a refurb.

    It's a firmware bug, and you only got 2 reports (not conclusive). It doesn't make any sense for a camera to overheat, then cool doing in 5-10 seconds, and then work for the rest of the day.

    I'm here because I had a very similar situation as Darren Perry. On my very first session out shooting, the camera began to overheat. I was shooting raw stills. Temps were upper 50's fahrenheit at about 6,500 ft of elevation (less atmosphere, more intense sun exposure). It was cloudy when I first began to shoot, but very quickly began overheating the second the clouds broke and the camera was exposed to direct sunlight. Just like Darren, I shut it off for about a minute, turned it back on, and didn't have any further issues for the rest of the day. Strange.
    I'm also incredibly unimpressed with the battery life, however, not surprised. I guess I was just hoping for more. Typically I hike into a location, shoot sunrise or sunset, and hike out so I don't see this being an issue. I typically only run through a battery if I'm shooting multiple locations throughout a day with longer setup times while shooting manual. Fair enough. At this price point and under these circumstance, a second or third battery are warranted. You get what you pay for in this case.
    I 100% agree with you at 12:05. I'm incredibly tempted to jump ship and shell out for the R6mkII. I don't want to because I couldn't care less about the extra features included with the price tag, but the unreliability of the overheating issue with the R8 is a huge concern. I'll be taking your advice and reaching out to Canon directly to see what they have to say in response to this issue, because I agree, this absolutely should not be tolerated in a quality product.

    It’s not really about paying for heat dissipation, smaller body means more complexities when dealing with heat. This comes down to thermal dynamics and size. Fans are useful for cinema cameras because size doesn’t really matter.

    Just got an R8 then found your video. One thing is for sure though, if you put all shortcomings into context with price in mind, there is still nothing come even close to what this offers. For handheld vlog and studio shots, R8+16 +35 +digital enhanced IS, 4k30 or 4k60, full frame, under $2500 with all cards, usb pd powerbank, handle, bag included. Nothing comes close.

    Great update. You are absolutely spot on with your video. I am not whining about what the R8 is missing. I knew the differences at the point of purchasing and was happy with what the R8 offers and I will say now from owning it that its a fantastic camera. As you quite rightly said, it is not acceptable for £1699 camera to overheat while taking stills. I have contacted canon today and raised a ticket with them. They said that they have not heard of anyone else reporting this at the moment. The company I purchased it from have also said they are happy to replace my camera with a brand new one just in case i have a faulty model. I completely agree with all your comments. 👍🏼

    Ive been overheating taken timelaps and stills since day 1 with my r8 . I spoke to peter in customer service who never returned my calls. Then scott, and shawn in customer relations who strung me on for almost a month with no asnwers or call backs they just told me 24 hours every time. I finaly got the highest point of customer contact in all of canon us. His name is michael he is the absolute worst one to work with. Told me he would have shawn send me a mailing label to send my camera in to be looked at and never did i had to call back and speak with him again over a week later to get him to send the label. This is the highets point of contanct in all of the company and they are doing nothing at all. Besides lying and saying they never heard of the R8 overheating

    In my case, I specifically said I was willing to deal with what this camera doesn't have, so I wasn't really whining about things like ibis/dual card slots/shutter. What I was not aware of is how bad the battery would be. Maybe that's partially my fault for not looking into it more, but to put such a small battery in such a capable full frame camera seems ridiculous to me. I primarily shoot stills and this camera is rated for 290 shots, but I did not even get anywhere near that. I can't even imagine trying to shoot video, especially with the overheating problems that have come to light. The sd card being in the battery compartment is also silly, but something I could have probably ultimately dealt with. When you take what this camera lacks and you add the ridiculous battery, it just wasn't for me.

      @@babybackmaniacleftovers I watched another video last night from a guy with overheating in stills mode. So it is definitely a thing for some. I don’t recall him saying that the camera actually got hot, but it gave the warning and shut off. It is unacceptable for a camera to overheat doing stills, maybe not so with video. But my r5 tells me out much time I have to record 4k/120 video, so I’m fine with that and I only need relatively short clips anyway (I think that always the case with 4k/120 anyway). I hope Canon gets this sorted quickly for R8 users. It seems they need to do more testing on these bodies in video mode to prevent these overheating dramas time and time again I’m getting tired of hearing about it after every new release.

    The problem is that since the release of the r5 / r6 youtubers like to play with stories of overheating for visibility.
    Regarding the r8, we put a lot of emphasis on overheating but we forget above all that the 4k60 (full frame and with a super AF) has this price, for an FF it is a luxury and that this luxury has a limit: overheating . But not the opposite, that it is an obligation in 2023 that we are served the 4k60 FF without overheating…it is the only camera at this price that offers 4k60 FF without cropping
    This camera just isn't made for people who want to shoot 4k60 continuously for several minutes or hours...like it's not made for people who want to shoot underwater, those who want to set it up on a motorcycle helmet etc…
    For my part I have had it for more than a week and I was able to use it for a wedding contract in video and another weddinf in photo. I had no issues with overheating while filming a lot of 2-5min shots in 4k60…and I had no issues with overheating either when using it as the main camera during my photo contract…everything that for 10 hours of coverage.

    • @babybackmaniacleftovers
      @babybackmaniacleftovers  Год назад

      You say the R8 "wasn't make for continuous 4k/60" but the only reason you are saying that is because it's overheating. If it wasn't overheating, it would be fine. Everything you are saying is what they said about the R5...and now with a firmware update it doesn't overheat even in 8K. It had nothing to do with "how it was made" and had everything to do with the software. I think we would all enjoy it if it did better.

    • @peterra2532
      @peterra2532 Год назад

      @@babybackmaniacleftovers What I'm insinuating is that you're making a big fuss about the r8 overheating and blaming Canon for not offering 4k60 that doesn't overheat... when in the end there's no camera who offers what it offers. The sony a7IV and the lumix s5 II decided to crop their 4k60 to have no problem, and even the lumix s5II added a fan to it so as not to heat up, and when it came out the a7IV overheated after +/-45mm in 4k60 (despite the crop)...
      I think we can above all congratulate this R8 for offering us 4k60 without cropping, in such a small box, and which is very widely usable for a large number of amateur and pro videographers. I think the majority of videographers do not need to use 4k60 when filming more than 30 minutes continuously, but rather sequences of 2-5 minutes each time... Indeed with a software update they will be able to improve that, but now it's widely usable for those who don't want to film 30 minutes without cutting the recording...and Canon has never sold it as being possible to do so.
      It's as if I was going to make a video showing that the canon r8 would no longer work after 10 minutes of video in the rain, saying that it's incredible that this camera does not work more than 10 minutes in the rain and that at this price it's a shame, I can't film my dog running in the rain in 4k60...
