I've had mine for 9 years and still love it.
Good news, I noticed you talked about the missing ISO-button. However, you can set the Fn-button to be the ISO-button. Pressing the Fn-button enables the ISO-function and by rotating the dial, you are able to adjust ISO without looking at the screen!
I still love my D5100 after 8 years. I've dragged it around a lot of places and it has never missed a beat.
i have one personally, im new to photography, but the results are stunning. when timing it correctly and getting the good edits + shots, it comes out so good!

5:30 you can preset an ISO button, I use the one below the flash button and it work perfect
Regarding the fully manual video, there is a firmware update that allows you to do it too

100% agree that people focus too much on the megapixels number. Most people don't need more than 16. I've had the D5100 for years but I just upgraded to the full frame DF - it still only has 16MP hha. I'll still use my D5100 for when I need something light and more portable. It's such a good camera, I can't get rid of it.
Is that good for videography?
I own a Sony A7RIV and thousands of dollars of lenses....BUT I still kinda miss the old days when I owned the D5100. I would love to get another one just to revisit the old days.

I'm planning to use this camera mostly for photography. I was quite worried about the 16.2 megapixel and it was a real relief that you said it wasn't a problem. Your video was really helpful and keep doing such a graet job.
I use a D7100 and have never used the 24 MP. I always downsize to 13 MP and can make enlargements upto 24 x 36 inches without any trouble
I bought one about a month before this came out, used but in mint condition from KEH. Paired with a Nikon 18-140. First dslr and maybe my last given my age. There are 2 other ways to change the iso. I haven't used video if I did it would be snippets, 30 sec to 1 min. Great photos, serves my purpose. I have had no reason to wish I bought a different one.
My mom gave me her nikon D5100. I’m starting a RUclips channel. Will this work for just starting out? Eventually I do want to get a better camera, but for now will this make quality videos?

I would argue that if you are looking for a video centric camera and are starting from scratch, skip most DSLR all together, unless if you're on a very tight budget. Canon 70d and above has dual pixel AF which allows you to autofocus in video, and fully articulating screens, but those are still about $300 to $400 even used. For that price you can get a Sony A6400. If you are starting with just photography, then Nikon DSLRs are the way to go. I'd suggest the D300, as it is the best camera you can grow into. Those are going for as low as $110 for a pro body DSLR, rugged weather sealed magnesium alloy body, controls galore, 7 to 8 fps if you get a battery grip and high capacity battery which is ideal for animal and sports usage, dynamic range is great, and is still better than Canon's 10 to 18 mp dslrs. Only 12 mp, but trust me the image quality is 21st century. (Image quality has always been 21st century since the 6mp sensors came out). The only real reason you may want a D5100 against the D300 is the fully articulating screen which is very useful for a creative situation, such as low or high from the ground angles. The biggest downside to the D5100 is you can't use older lenses that uses inbody focus motors which the D90 or D300 has. Older primes are dirt cheap, but need in-body focus motors, and newer bright lenses do have focus motors in them that will work with this D5100, but can be substantially more expensive, so really pick your poison.
My D5100 is 7 years old and still going strong. I just wish the live view focus didn't suck :( I end up having to use manual focus during video and it's just too inconvenient

Great video! I had a 5100 I bought in 2012 just sitting in a bag since I replaced it in 2016 with a more capable Nikon. Ran across this video while investigating if it would be good for shooting some RUclips videos instead of buying a GoPro. I was very surprised to see the shots from Wyoming, just out my back door!! I love my D5100, I was able to pick up a dirt cheap one with low shutter count a few years ago and I've since shot it till the shutter slowed down and it's just about dead at this point! Lol I actually found your channel and this video cause it's the top video suggesting my d5100 review hahahahahahah. You bring up some really good points I missed in my video but I think you bring up a really good point about the camera resolution. The only thing that really disappointed me with my was video, I shoot most of my videos with a d5300 due to that.

Bought one for $300 in 2018 with the kit lens and the 55-300. Added a 35 1.8 and it was my kit until 2020 when I felt like I was ready to upgrade to the Fuji X-T3 / 35 f2. This camera definitely is sentimental to me, since it's what I learned photography on. But the video capabilities just weren't up to my expectations
I have the "Fn" key set for the ISO setting/control.
2021 checking in and my D5100 is still working great. It fits a great niche in my camera gear: more powerful than a phone, smaller and lighter than a full frame DSLR.

You can control all video settings if you hack the firmware, thats 2 minutes of work

The firmware mods from nikon hacker make this way better for photos and video. Better raw, no star eating, real time video exposure and shutter speed as well as a much higher bitrate.

@@angelicafoster670 yes, one of the advantages of bigger resolution is that you can crop the photo.
In a light box the space is limited, this means that you will not crop much, so you don't need a lot of megapixels. The quality of the lens is more important than the number of megapixels. This is why a DSLR is much much better than any smartphone's camera. If a smartphone costs 1000 USD, this means they had to invest in technology regarding screen, small parts [microphone, connectivity (WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC), camera, etc], so a lot of things. But the DSLR invests mainly in the technology regarding the camera sensor, they focus exclusively on that, so it's normal that it's way more advanced
Hey! I bought this camera in 2014 and used it quite a lot for vacations but with the upcoming iPhone camera upgrades, I’ve used it less and less. Now I’m in dentistry and I would love to give it a second lifetime to use it for en face and profile pictures of my patients and the dental photography if possible. Could you maybe help me out if the camera is able to do such things ?
it is great streaming machine / webcam, 720p30 though, but it is better, than you'll pull out of any consumer webcams. sincerely recommending it, using it mainly for skype calls

He must not have never heard of the nikon hack. Manual mode isnt the problem your talking about any more. You can manually control everything in real time except the aperture. Game changer.

I specifically chose not to mention the "manual hack" in my video actually 😂 Suffice it to say that it's obnoxious and annoying. From your comment I'm guessing your into videography, so do yourself a favor and go Canon (unless you want to extend your budget to a newer Nikon). Like I said in the video, I like the D5100's video, my next video that's going up in a couple of days was shot on the D5100, but I think you'll be more satisfied if you go Canon. Hope this helps!
Jordanphotoaudio, thanks for replying, yes I want to get into video, I Have never done video. I was interested in the Nikon because I do regular photography with a D 700 and I have some expensive glass built up over the years so I was trying not to cross over to Canon but I do understand Canon seems to be better liked.
Ohhh that actually makes things different! In that case I'd invest in maybe a D600 or D610 for videography! Those are only like $600 a pop and are completely on par with Canon for video!

I am just about to replace by D5100 as the roaming lense when trying to focus drives me nuts. Anyone else have this problem and know why it may do this? I'm not a professional, just a mum who takes pics and vid of her kids.

Yeah the D5100 is gunna be perfectly fine for blogging! Just make sure you have access to at least somewhat decent light

I bought one back in 2013 but now LCD screen displayed is broken plus I lost the charger somewheres. Now that i stumbled on your video, i kinda want to pick it back up and get it fixed, however i doubt if it worth or not lol. Would you recommend whether it worth spending money to fix it or maybe i should spend the money looking for a better one? thanks.
I had a similar experience with Nikon D200. I was going to pay $200 to fix the card reader. It sat for 6 years. Finally pulled it out last week and decided to buy a Nikon D200 used camera body off Ebay for $65. So HAPPY I DID!! 4 days later it is in my hands.
Have a quick question! I recently found my 5100 but there’s a problem with the SD cards. At first I wanted to see old pictures I had on my SD’s. I was able to see all my pictures on my 4-5 SD cards I have initially . But for whatever reason the next time I tried to load the pictures it didn’t work... now I’m trying to take pictures on the camera but it’s telling me there’s no SD card inserted when there is one inserted. There’s 2 SD cards that I slide in with the green light turning on then off but still with the message “no memory card”. The other SD cards don’t even flicker the green light. I’m confused as in why it worked then all of sudden it’s unable to even load the pictures now... please if you can help. Thank you!

Some have some very minor color correction, but nothing that couldn't be done in camera

Depends on what type of video, vlogging definitely go for the nex, however for videography and landscape editing for sure the d5100

A shutter count of 15,000 is perfectly fine! I'd only worry at 150,000+

I'd very highly recommend the D600! A fantastic deal! I'd also look into a D610 since it's only slightly more money, but has much fewer quality control issues. If the D600s you find are much much cheaper though, just go with one of those

Well the D600 is objectively better, but it's also like $200 USD more, so if you can afford that go D600! Especially since the D700 can't take video

Hmmm that's quite strange. All working D5100s have a video mode. It doesn't have manual exposure for video, maybe that's what she meant? Otherwise, maybe she had an even older Nikon like the D5000 which I can't recall if it has video or not

I personally like the T3i more, but I admit that I'm Canon user primarily, so I'm biased. The T3i is slightly more expensive, but it just does most things that much better

That's not a short answer hahaha. There are tons of good videos on youtube explaining it though! Just look up "DSLR M mode/manual mode explained" or something to that end and you should be good!

Maybe slightly in some minor details, but it's not gunna be an over all better experience. I'd just go for whichever is cheaper and put the extra money towards lenses
