is it possible to passthrough Video output onto a computer via HDMI using Coolpix L810 ... ? in other words, Can I record directly onto a computer, avoiding the need for SD Card ?
FYI - For tip #7, you can also program the default focus position in horizontal or either vertical position by holding the auto focus switch button in the front of the camera and OK.
Great tips. I've been using my D750 for two years and didn't know most of these settings you describe. I see lots of articles and videos about "secrets" and "tricks," but rarely do they surprise me. You, on the other hand, really taught me something.
I think Steve has a lot to teach many people with his informative videos. I'm a professional Nikon photographer and I look at some from time to time and learn new things. Thank you Steve for sharing your knowledge.
Clear, concise, well delivered and to the point tips! Having invested in the D850, and struggled through the manuals 400+ pages, your explanatory videos are all first class, including the AF Fine tuning focus tips in another video! Many thanks! Cheers, Frederic in Montréal
YOU ARE THE BEST DEAR !! THIS IS WHEN AN EXPERT IS TALKING !! ALL THESE HINTS ARE REALLY AWESOME !!!! THANK YOU SOO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND SUPPORT !! WISH YOU ALL THE BEST FOR YOUR BOOK TOO !!!
Does not work on the D610. Pressing OK button gives you Retouch Menu when looking at pic. Nikon stuffed up. My old D300, D7100, D500 OK button all work properly.
For the D5200 users out there: 1) Not available for this model, 2) Not available for this model, but after hitting play button and some zoom, one can press i button and use < and > buttons to loop through to detected faces positions and check focus 3) Mine already skip thru photos using command dial by default 4) Not available for this model, but one can assign this function to "my menu" to speed it up a little 5) Not available for this model. I wish I could use the built in flash button for that. 6) Not available for this model, but the Fn button can be used for ISO ( very handy) 7) Not available for this model, but one can use Center/Ok button to center the single focus point
i use D5200, 2013model , all these options mentioned are not in my camera too.... but he sayys, all nikon has this option in different places ... whenever i go for nikon classes the trainer will be always taking 810 as his teaching model. and he also never bothereed about middle or entry level models....
Love No.2 - Assign 100% zoom to focus point on image review via the multi-selector centre button. invaluable time-saving tip....33 years as a Photographer and every day is a school day. Thanks Steve, great video by the way.
So glad I found you!! I'm going back to basics after a 4 year slump and you are just what the doctor ordered. Thanks a ton for reminding me what a gorgeous toy I have to play with. You're a natural teacher. Thanks so much, Steve. Much obliged x x x
Hi Steve, I bought your book when it came out and get your updates (got). Many thanks. Excellent book with so much in it I missed these tricks. But am now shooting a D750 so am refreshing stuff on YT. You're a great teacher, concise and to the point with no fluff like so many others. If you get to read this a big
Hey Steve, although I've been a Canon shooter for years, I've been thinking about switching over to Nikon and recently picked up a D300s and I just wanted to say thanks for all the information you put out on a regular basis, as it's helped me immensely. Love the book, by the way!
I am a recent convert from the Canon 70D to the Nikon D500. No regrets because the sensor is so much better in low light and the frame rate is better for birds in flight. I do find the Nikon menus hellish complicated (and don't understand why Nikon Banks can't be locked) and so short cuts like these from Steve are incredibly helpful.
Just came accross this as I have recently bought a Nikon D7500. Thanks so much for piutting this together, extreemly helpful and they all work with my camera.
I'm an amateur Photographer with my first dslr, Nikon D750. Those tips are going to make things much easier and faster! Thanks so much for the AWESOME tips! I've subscribed!
One of the quickest ways that NIKON shooters can make CANON shooters jealous is, without hitting the "play" button, zooming in to 100% on the image you just captured, AND THEN SCROLLING BETWEEN OTHER PHOTOS. For whatever reason, Canon continues to disallow this, assuming that you'd rather change your camera settings while reviewing images, lol. Fail! That thumb dial on Canons is nice for really blazing through images, though, but I honestly don't do high-speed image scrolling often enough to want to use my command dials for image scrolling. But, while we're on the subject of making Canon shooters jealous, the one thing not mentioned here that is HUGE for me as a wedding / portrait shooter is, of course, face detection during image playback. If anybody has ever noticed the little white boxes over people's faces when zooming in to a waist-up portrait, try spinning the sub-command (usually the front) dial while zoomed in to 100%. It will automatically scroll from face to face to face! Using this, I've been able to blaze through massive numbers of group photos during a cocktail hour or reception, and ensure ZERO blinking or OOF shots even for over 300 people in a row! :-)
Well every single canon camera has image review button right under either right or left thumb. That depends on whether the camera is flippy or not. What you mean by rather changing camera settings than reviewing images? Nikon has menu button at the ideal position for review button, Canon does it right.
OMG!!!! I love the rec ISO change option. I absolutely hated having to pull the camera from my face to make sure I am on the ISO button on the back when changing it, buuuuttttt now I use this method and it's genius! Thanks thanks and thanks!!!!!
I already have Movie Record reassigned to ISO but now, thanks to your helpful video, I also have the command dial whizzing through my images and the OK button zooming in on them. Double thumbs-up :-)
Nikon D7100 user here. Steve, in all seriousness...you just saved me a ton load of time and frustrations. I shoot emergency incidents and there is never time to be fidgeting with the menu. Thank you Thank you! Excellent video and audio too. Keep up the good work. PS... I subscribed
Fantastic. I really like your videos how they are so organized. It's really hard to make a video seem so effortless and to-the-point, your videos do a fantastic job at communication.
Excellent! I found this video before and learned Number 3, the fast image scrolling, and needed it to set up another camera and couldn't find the setting. Took me a while to find this one again. Greast stuff.
How can you tell? I have Canon, and I didn't dislike it. Maybe Elvis fans dislike it because the video isn't about Elvis - who knows? Or it could just be the loud music at the beginning!
+lau bjerno did you read what he said? "people who disliked this video have canon" he didnt say "everyone who has canon disliked this" DO YOU HAVE A BRAIN?
Awesome! When I got my pre-loved D750 the scroll through images was enabled and It gave me the shirts! No-one could tell me how to turn it off, other than by pussing a button every time after I took a shot. By showing how to enable it, I've learned how to disable it! The other tips are gold - ISO on record will be a game changer. SUBSCRIBED!
What an awesome video, Steve!!! I can't believe no other Nikon RUclips "pros" cover these (and other menu) aspects in their inadequate reviews of the cameras they have. These really are HELPFUL TIPS for better photography. THANK YOU!!!
I like scrolling through the menus with the rear dial and entering and exiting menus with the front dial. Most probably know this already but just throwing it out there. I recently discovered this myself. Great video by the way.
Way to go Steve! These are some awesome tips that I whipped my camera out for right when I saw this video! I upgraded about a year or so back from my D3200 to D7200 and missed changing my ISO with one hand. Absolutely loved this video! Thanks for putting this up on RUclips!
Steve, you're awesome! That's one coffee break very well spent and I've subscribed. Fast Card Format? WHAt?!! That alone is a GREAT function and I'm not ashamed to say that I've been a Nikon shooter for a very long time and didn't know that. Golden tips. thanks again. And thanks for the D5 specific comments/details :)
I'm glad I discovered this video. Now I can prolong the life of my 'left' and 'right' multi-selector buttons by using the command dial instead! I've seen this a lot in my friends' cameras and even my own old D7000. The left and right button are beat up and almost totally unresponsive due to the constant stress when reviewing images.
nice tips! too bad the best tricks dont work on my d7100! using rec button for ISO for example! frustrating that nikon wont just upgrade the firmware to enable this...
Honestly, I don't know why they aren't more forthcoming with firmware updates for things like that. I know others (Fuji in particular) are good about it and it helps with customer loyalty for sure.
Steve Perry yeah me too! just upgraded from a d3300 and with that camera I can change iso using the fn button on the left side with out taking my eye off the view finder. it frustrates me that I have to change iso from the back of the d7100 and i cant even reassign it to another button.
Using the ISO button on the rear of the D7100 body does the same thing as setting up the record button to do it. It just is on the rear instead of the top.
Bob Barr the whole purpose is to reposition the ISO button most know where is located but have the ability to change the position for a more convenient for personal matters is the thing...
+Bob Barr that is fine if you are using a small light lens and can use your left hand to press the ISO button on the rear of the camera but if you are hand holding a big heavy lens like a 200-500mm you are then unable to let go of the lens with your left hand to adjust ISO. With a D7100 the only way I've found around this is to shoot in manual mode and auto iso, then I can effectively adjust ISO by altering shutter speed or aperture.
I shot with a Canon once and fell in love with the wheel on the back and cursed Nikon for making us use that stupid toggle....the wheel tip just changed my life! Now, can you show me how Nikon can do a double exposure while letting you view the first exposure on the screen??? Thanks for the tips, great stuff!!
Hi Steve Just had an awkward moment over the weekend photographing Hen Harriers. My D500 suddenly froze with no back screen and the top screen. Only showing the ISO speed... tried everything but couldn’t change the shutter speed nor the f-stop and couldn’t change anything, yet the camera would shoot no problem. I though my camera was wrecked... 😱 BUT I checked my camera over and the ISO button was stuck with what must have been a piece of grit... believe I tried everything and though my camera was destined for repair... but I saw that the ISO button was a little depressed... upon freeing it via a very fine needle it released the button and all was back to normal. Hope this could help other followers... the relief was incredible 👍
Wow! How many years have you been using that? Is it still working? I'm planning to buy a dslr but I'm not sure if it will last for years. I want something that I could use for 5 years or more. :)
There tricks would save my life when i started photography back in 2009 !!! It's nice to see that i know them all. Very good youtube channel, clean and helpful
I switched from Canon to Nikon 2 years ago, and your tutorials are making me actually like shooting with Nikon more than I have. Now, if you can tell me how to make Nikon's low light Live view display as good as Canon's you'll be a Guru and my personal hero.
These are really terrific Nikon tricks, I have the D810 and I have worked out some short-cuts from past Nikons, but you have put the icing on the cake for me Steve, thankyou very much mate.
#1 Is the best tip ever for me. I could do something like that in my Fuji X-T2, but did not know I could in the Nikon D750. Also perfect when "scanning" negatives by taking a photo with the D750 on a light board. - or shooting with a macro lens.
Dear Steve - THANK YOU! I'm a pro corporate/industry/advertising photographer for years (actually using a Nikon D5 and a Nikon D810). Being also a gear nerd I thought I knew my cameras... But some of these tipps are just stunning and new to me! Great. Now I will go check your website for the book and hope it will be available for purchasing as a download (I don't want stacks of paper being shipped around the world for just information - - different case with nice pictures). Keep up the good work you have a new fan!
Steve it's me again. I'm on page 87 of your book now. It's easy to read (I'm no english native but from Switzerland) and covers everything. Great. Of course being a pro for more than a quarter century myself, on these first 87 pages there wasn't to much news... anyways - it's very fluently readable and fun. Thx again (if you'd beg for some criticism: You write as one would speak and therefore the same information could have been packed in the half number of pages)
I enjoy your tutorials and your presentation. You catch my attention when I’m watching/ listening to you. So not only do you offer good photography skills/knowledge, you have a good voice, and skillful presentation, people can retain. While there are many other photographers who offer tutorial videos on RUclips, some teach the right stuff, but they just don’t have the “presentation or voice skills we want to hear, therefore tuning them out.
Very practical tips! I actually had literally everything setup exactly like these. It's an huge time saver indeed, and makes working with my D750 a snap, it's really ergonomic. Tip 8 (for portrait shooters): set the spot meter hotkey to the Fn button. It's a really big help if you want perfectly exposed skin.
Hi Steve, great video - re #2 quick 100% zoom in live view: If pressing the OK button is followed by pressing the preview button in manual focus mode the action is complete. Thanks, Greg W
I have been following you for a few years now Steve and even though I have been taking photos for over 30 years you were key in my transition from auto to manual about four years ago. i have kept coming back to this one now and again just to add bits to what I can do, the latest was to try the orientation at the end... could I find the settings?!?! i looked and looked on my camera but it was only until i watched the next tricks video did I realise that my D7100 might not have that option!!!! ( even though its written at the beginning of this vlog 😂). Thank you so much for your teachings, it has my it far easier for me to get to grips with a passion of mine. Keep the vlogs coming.... I know how hard work it is putting them together 💪
I haven't been through all these comments, but setting up the back button focus on an MB-D15 battery pack is:- Custom settings menu/controls, press f10 and select ON then ok etc etc
I set my D7500 almost as soon as I opened this video, and use almost of them every time I shoot. I plan to re-watch this again and see what else I can use.
This is my 2nd time watching this, I must have been half awake during the first viewing, bcos the 2nd time watching it I got a ton of tips for my D750! Thank you very much!!!
just bought the e'book, steve, this is encyclopaedic for Nikon users, menus can be a pain but this purchase is a bargain, thanks, now i can get my menus sorted and be confident what i want is what i get, magic stuff....
I really like your tips. Your video tip on back-button focus was really great (I now use it all the time). I then bought your first book. I'll take a look at the second one.
Another very good one Steve. I press and hold the ok controller to quick scroll images and have used the dials when zoomed in to scroll images in the zoomed in position, but using the dials to quick scroll seems very useful. Thanks again.

Man that zoom trick alone makes this video worth watching. I've always hated having to push zoom multiple times to check sharpness.
Thanks!

Does not work on the D610. Pressing OK button gives you Retouch Menu when looking at pic. Nikon stuffed up. My old D300, D7100, D500 OK button all work properly.
@@frednil8304 does not work on 7000 also..
I love that aswell! But wonder how I can get fast center focus than? Have the d850
I'm CRYING because the D610 doesn't have that and now, people like you just seem to be gloating! 😂🤣
I'm a Canon user by profession, Nikon user by hobby. I'm happy to find these tips. Makes the jump between camera's easier.
For the D5200 users out there:
1) Not available for this model,
2) Not available for this model, but after hitting play button and some zoom, one can press i button and use < and > buttons to loop through to detected faces positions and check focus
3) Mine already skip thru photos using command dial by default
4) Not available for this model, but one can assign this function to "my menu" to speed it up a little
5) Not available for this model. I wish I could use the built in flash button for that.
6) Not available for this model, but the Fn button can be used for ISO ( very handy)
7) Not available for this model, but one can use Center/Ok button to center the single focus point

Jonathan Araujo thanks for taking the time to write this up. Saves me time!
Jonathan Araujo you made me save 10 minutes of my life
also d3300
for d5300??

Super!
You can learn something new every day regardless how long you have been doing something.
So glad I found you!! I'm going back to basics after a 4 year slump and you are just what the doctor ordered. Thanks a ton for reminding me what a gorgeous toy I have to play with. You're a natural teacher. Thanks so much, Steve. Much obliged x x x
Best tutorial video I've seen all year on RUclips, thanks a lot mister.
Hi Steve, I bought your book when it came out and get your updates (got). Many thanks. Excellent book with so much in it I missed these tricks. You have nicely exposed the hidden treasures of Nikon cameras in your own great style- thanks a lot!
Wow....a camera guy on YOuTube is who isn’t angry, shilling, or entertaining.....just GREAT useful information. Thanks
The video gift that keeps on giving. (3 years later) Good tips. I hope I can remember at least a couple of them.
You're kidding. This is the most useful video I've seen in months. Thanks a lot!!
Just came accross this as I have recently bought a Nikon D7500. Thanks so much for piutting this together, extreemly helpful and they all work with my camera.
I dont remeber last time I saw such usefull video !! Congrats and thank you very much from your fan from Brazil
Just got a D750 and was disappointed that the ISO button was not on top of the camera. Thank You for the Video button change. Life is good again!

What genius ideas, you solved several problems I have had in a matter of 10 mins.

427 as of today. sad fucks
Thank you Steve. Great tips. I look forward to shooting with them.
people who disliked this videos have canon, lol
How can you tell? I have Canon, and I didn't dislike it. Maybe Elvis fans dislike it because the video isn't about Elvis - who knows? Or it could just be the loud music at the beginning!
I think they just misclicked :)
it was just a joke !
I have both, Nikon and Canon , and I bought the book LOL ...
+lau bjerno
did you read what he said? "people who disliked this video have canon"
he didnt say "everyone who has canon disliked this"
DO YOU HAVE A BRAIN?
That formatting technique is LIFE-CHANGING!!!
Was for me when I found it years ago - you should see me trying to format cards in my 5D IV LOL

Shoot sports including indoor basketball. I have enjoyed your videos for years. But this one was exceptional! Thank you!
Thank you! This has been helpful and had moment of ahh I didn’t know you could do that

Hi Steve

This moment when you realize your D610 is aging ...
Well, here I am with my F-501...
Do these not work on the d600/610?
Symbiotic Empire they don't seem to. Trying to set my recoding control as ISO and there's more recording control to asign sadly
There's no*
Der Keksinator - still loving my d300
Wooow, i loved the trick were you can set dials controls to swap between photos!!! Super dope!!! Using a D7500! Thumbs up!!!
RE: focus point orientation recall. I cant find it on my D3S on fw1.01. Can I update to get more functions? Fw1.03?
I've been a Nikon user for years, these tips are new to me and are fantastic. Thanks Steve
the way my nikon had none of these options 😭
What model is your Nikon?
@@gendoctolero702 nikon d5100
LOL - I wish someone would tell Nikon how to do that! Live View is one area Nikon has really fallen behind on.
Thank you so much for this! I just upgraded from a D5000 to a D750 and these tips are a huge help!
It was available as a download (e-paper) - great I will read it right now! Awesome! thx again! Martin
I just got a Nikon camera set today for Christmas and I’m so excited to use it more in future
I appreciate that!
Thanks Steve. I got into photography as a hobby and have been enjoying it. These tips will surely help me. Well done!
I'm not sure why anyone disliked this video. Great tips
Thank you Steve. Have safe, healthy and enjoyable holiday season!!
I have known just format shortcut, not the main dial to select which slot to format. COOL! VERY USEFUL!
I haven't been through all these comments, but setting up the back button focus on an MB-D15 battery pack is:- Custom settings menu/controls, press f10 and select ON then ok etc etc
You, sir are a life saver. That af point in different orientations is bomb.
I have all your books and can’t thank you enough...please keep the books and videos coming!
Very nice and handy tricks. Thank you for sharing this Steve. Makes life much easier.
Super Helpful! Getting my Nikon tomorrow and will definitely use these tricks
Fantastic video presenting Nikon's excellence in its cameras. I will be ordering your book too.
I set my D7500 almost as soon as I opened this video, and use almost of them every time I shoot. I plan to re-watch this again and see what else I can use.
Now using this on my D800 which I just picked up last week (almost mint condition). Thanks got keeping it online, it's super useful
The formatting trick was definitely useful and cheeky.. Thanks for that.
This is my 2nd time watching this, I must have been half awake during the first viewing, bcos the 2nd time watching it I got a ton of tips for my D750! Thank you very much!!!
just bought the e'book, steve, this is encyclopaedic for Nikon users, menus can be a pain but this purchase is a bargain, thanks, now i can get my menus sorted and be confident what i want is what i get, magic stuff....
bought the e-book secrets to nikon autofocus system. I am just thoroughly enjoying reading it.
Fantastic video!!! Zooming with the OK button. WOW
Great Tips Steve perry. Thanks for sharing. It is really useful. Zoom in Focus + Live view Fast Image review and Turn off Flash is very useful.
I really like your tips. Your video tip on back-button focus was really great (I now use it all the time). I then bought your first book. I'll take a look at the second one.
Some awesome and immensely useful tips sir 🏆💯💯💯
Very valuable hints and tips. You are a good teacher. Thanks
Another very good one Steve. I press and hold the ok controller to quick scroll images and have used the dials when zoomed in to scroll images in the zoomed in position, but using the dials to quick scroll seems very useful. Thanks again.
Thanks for number 3! Putting that one to work right now and it's so much easier to search pics!
Dude! This was incredible! I just got an 810 and set every single "trick" you talked on. Thanks!
I just did the flash tip on my new D7500,Thank you Steve.
