I’m here in 2019 learning about my Nikon D5100. Thank you! I’m using mine for my RUclips content.
Lol me too, it's been stuck in the wardrobe for years!
Hello Corey, I just bought a cheap second-hand one for my son to do the same. Do you think it makes more sense than using an iphone for RUclips vids?
Same
2021 here haha
@@genevievecai not just ME that's late to this video then !
You sir have just taught me SO MUCH in a few minutes. I knew nothing before! Thank you so much for this clear explanation!
Mey Lynn You're welcome!
As a film student i am always trying to learn something new,, with so many videos out there that are less than par it is easy to get lost and frustrated.
your two videos have helped me tremendously with my d5100 settings
there are too many videos with over dubbed music which is so annoying and long intros that i personally dont give a shit about. Your video is straight to the point and i applaud you for that. THANKS!
The bit about flattening the video and the noise reduction helped a LOT. I really appreciate you making these.
+Kenneth Hart That's great! I'm glad the video was useful to you.
This is the best tutorial that I've found for film look on the D5100, thus far! Thank you!
Just got my Nikon D5100 today as a low budget camera for my tv and film course at college, this video is just what I needed thank you!
One of the best tutorials on youtube on how to use the nikon d5100 for videos. Thanks for your help
I'm a bit behind the times but this video has *really* helped when shooting video with my old D5000.
Honestly I never even tried before I watched this and remained in the world of stills with this camera.
You've single handedly changed *everything*!
Thanks!!
That's great! I hope you have renewed inspiration for your camera. Have fun!
I wished I watched this video years ago. I cannot believe that I still learning how to use my camera. Great Video!!!
Your custom picture style is AMAZING, the "flat" style, its all i use now, its Perfect for shooting the night sky too - i have just came back in from outside, and im impressed!
THANK YOU! its an all around style.
I watched this video and appreciate your working knowledge of the DSLR for video. You are head and shoulders above the rest of the amateur crowd. What made me want to comment, however, was watching "Unforgettable" on your channel. Your technical camera and editing skills combine with your artistic skills to make video stories that are worth watching. Thanks from a professional still photographer
Wow, thanks Harvey. I appreciate the very kind words. I don't see myself as head and shoulders above the rest. I don't use grey cards, green screens, or any Adobe programs, so I'm destined to remain an amateur buried in obscurity, lol. I suppose we really are our own worst critic! I just like to keep things somewhat simple, and I'm happy with that. Thanks again, and I'm glad you enjoy my videos!
're a professional, thanks to the slow, but extremely accurate way to explain everything you resolved many questions so I want to thank you, greetings from Spain, continues with these videos, as this is essential for anyone who wants to venture into the world of video. (you have a new subscriber)
Thanks, I appreciate it! I hope to visit Spain some day.
keep in touch, if you come to Spain I can be your GUIDE (for free) in Madrid, which will save you time and facilitate search locations you may be interested to include in your videos, here you have a friend, for what you need when you arrive. ..

Thanks for the offer! I may just take you up on it some day.

You're awesome my man. I can now record HD videos in 1080p without it looking grainy in any scenario.
Thanks for taking the time. I have become much more proficient with my nikon d5100 as a result of your tutorials. From my roadtrek n6 last march, to my dynamax trilogy last nov. i always review to make sure i'm following your tips and suggestions for my camera's best results.
Really enjoyed your video and all of your tips. I've had mine for over 2 years now and I still learned a lot from your video.
Hi. Greetings from the UK. I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to explain your setup. It's really appreciated. You've explained everything really well.
Thanks for the tips. I had no idea what shutter speed did in videos... The 35mm is an absolute must have for all D5100 users.
The kit lens works exceptionally well. The key is post-production editing; specifically color grading/correcting. I would also suggest purchasing the 35mm f1.8 over the 50mm for a crop sensor DSLR such as the D5100. Good luck!
Thanks for these tips.. I've been shooting all my videos with a few iPhone 6's, a DJI Osmo and DJI Phantom, but now i'm wanting to get that more filmic look so I want to start using my D5100 more.. did some test shots today based on your tips and they look great!
Excellent! Nice videos. I'm always out exploring in the desert and mountains, but limited by 2 wheel drive. I don't see any videos from Death Valley. It's my favorite place and I think you would really enjoy it out there!
We actually planned a trip up there for November but could not find a good place to stay (we travel with relatives in their motor home and have specific requirements) but we will be getting up there at some point. Will be doing a video in Johnson Valley at "The Hammers" this weekend - not Death Valley but still a lot of fun.
Thank you so much for all your tips. I bought a Nikon D5100 last week and there are still things that I don't know and I just took the camera outside one day thinking that I will be able to just go out and record my bernese and post it on youtube but the quality of that video is not good at all and looks like it was recorded with my phone. I still have many things to learn and I can't wait to try your settings and go out to record again. Thank you once again. Regards from Romania.
You're a good teacher and a good photographer. Thanks for taking the time to help.
Thank you very much for your honest and open advice. I recently bought a d5300 and have now purchased and am using a polarizing filter. I am getting much better results with your suggested settings and control use.
I've had this camera for about 7 years and not known how to improve any of these settings! Very eye opening, Cheers
I also have a Nikon 5100 and use Sony Vegas studio...let me tell you I've had a lot of frustrations trying to get the best out of the camera and I'm glad I ran into your short film and I feel more confident. Your film was great...hope to follow your example!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. It was a great help. I look forward to applying what I learned!
You're welcome! I hope the information proves useful for you.
Hey Master Mike! This is Dan from Ohio and I just wanted to comment on your tutorial and say great as always. As I was checking my weekly drumming channel, your video pops up next to it. What a surprise! So for anyone that follows Prouisorsapientiae on you tube, I can tell you that this guy puts in his research time before he puts info out there. He is a guru in many areas, as well as an inspiring video artist. Great tutorial and great videos! Hope all is well on the west coast! Dan C.
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. You explained stuff really well and gave a lot of good tips on how to shoot video with D5100.
Thank you! All of my polarizing filters are Marumi DHG MC. You can find them on Amazon. They are slightly cheaper than B+W polarizing filters, and are considered better performing.
Hi i´m from Colombia in south America, and i just want to say,wow man, thanks for your time and very useful tutorial, i have my own D5100 and i´m learning how to used it for videos.
And and i´m improving my english too, so thanks again.
That's the most useful tutorial for videomaking on my camera. You saved me dude. I'm subscribing.
It's amazing how much I learned in 15 minutes by you compared to a teacher in school omg thank you 👏❤📷🎥
I think, I am going to start learning the things more seriously with my d5100 after watching your videos.
The first tip was probably the one I really needed, thank you so much! Great vid.
The Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 is my favorite lens. I even used it to make this tutorial. It would be perfect for a concert because it performs well in low light, and will capture most of the action. You could probably even get the entire stage in the shot in the front row!
thanks to you i just discovered some interesting features in my d5300(sharpness, contrast, hue etc). thats great.
Excellent! Yes, these tips will work for any camera that allows you to adjust these settings.
Old post, but very helpful for me, just trying out an old D5100 for some videomaking! Thanks!
Hey! thanks for confirming my confidence on getting this DSLR Camera, i wasn't too sure on getting this and now you've helped me realize how good this camera is, thanks a lot! I'm getting one in 3 days and pumped on getting into it for a few shots in a trip to Florida, thanks for everything you've don't on your videos, i have subscribed and practically watched all of them! thanks! this is my first DSLR camera and I'm looking into how to use it and hopefully become more comfortable with it thanks
Exactly what I was looking for in a tutorial video. Cheers mate.
really informative...whenever i make any video i get these grains allover my video which really annoys me...i will definitely try your method this sounds to be working.....thanks alot man!
Thanks for all of the great information, I'm thinking about getting the D5100 for videoing my two girls before they get much older. I will be getting the 18-55 lens with it, but I do have some older lenses that I can use.
Some excellent tips on getting better videos from the D5100, which I own. Your videos are excellent! Thanks for sharing!
Well, I also own the Canon 600D/T3i, and I much prefer the Nikon D5100. I know this goes against most other opinions on the two cameras, but I feel I am one of very few people who have worked extensively with the D5100 and gave it a chance. In the end, it's all up to you!
You're very welcome! If you run into problems with noise in the shadows of your shots, try using the "Standard" picture style preset that is already in the camera, or use the custom style shown in this video with the contrast bumped up a notch or two. Good luck!
I did the firmware hack and now have full auto control for video and in live view too.
Really appreciate your films. I will be pouring over them. I feel reassured I bought a good camera for what I wanted. Thanks from London. :)
Thank you, Paul! I've been to London. I'm not one for enjoying being within city walls, but London was quite an extraordinary place. It was a great trip!
Ive just upgraded from the d40x to the d5100, thanks for the helpful tips as this is my first video dslr!
+Matthew Way No problem!
Thank you very much guy ! You took on your precious time to share a lot of your knowledge and talent and as a Nikon D5100 user like you I do appreciate.
great information, thank you for taking the time out to share your experiences. keep up the great work.
+Jops P No problem! Thanks for the comment.
Amaizing man, still learning from this video in 2020!
Thanks for the quick response bro! Yes I too believe that the D5100 has less aliasing problems than the T3i. And as you showed in your video the censor inside the D5100 has a great dynamic range, just look at what you can pull out of those shadows! Truly amazing! I'm busy making a video for a friend of my who runs a barbershop and so far I'm really happy with the video quality that the D5100 delivers using these F1.8 Nikon lenses.
Ive had a look for weeks now at review and unboxings of the T3I and the D5100 and to be honest, the D5100 just seems that bit better, but im going to a local camera shop next week and they've offered me a viewing of the two cameras... and thanks for the help!
Well, I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you decide, as they are both very capable cameras. I'm glad I was able to help!
Hi, Justine! Personally, I use a B+W ND 3.0-1000x, and a Marumi Variable ND filter. They aren't the cheapest kind, but are excellent quality. I have seen good feedback about Hoya brand ND filters, and they are generally cheaper. Just makes sure whatever you get has coated glass to reduce flaring and ghosting. I hope this helps!
Absolutely! The only "problem" you will have, is that 50mm on a crop sensor is a short telephoto lens. You will find yourself having to stand further away from your subject to get everything in frame. It's an excellent portrait lens.
thanks for the great video! lots of good tips. just ordered a polarizing filter along with a remote for my 5100. looking forward to watching the rest of your vids :)
You're welcome! You will love your polarizing filter. Have fun shooting!
Now excited about shooting video. Thank YOU!
You're welcome!
Thanks brother, Starting my first short film and needed this.
No problem! Good luck with your short film.
Great video, I have a d3300 and its the same method when filming. Another tip for recording movie is on a daylight situations use a -0.3 or -0.7 levels in exposure comp. because I see the semi automatic modes overexposure a little (with matricial metric mode). In low light situations maybe use exp comp too, with auto ISO limit 1600, the cam will not set too high iso and the less noise. All this with the 35mm prime, 1.8g. Thanks.
You're welcome. Yes, you can use exposure compensation if you prefer. I prefer(but not always) not to which is why I usually choose spot metering and use the LCD to gauge my overall exposure. Thanks for the comment!
hi, learned a lot. i'm still using d5100 as of today. great cam for the price.
I'm glad the video helped, Jorge! Enjoy your purchase.
Have the 5200 first time full dslr and this has helped in understanding the controls in general for me let alone for video, thanks
virgkw You're welcome!
Nice video. I'm looking into buying a D5100 and this made me more convinced to getting one :) really good and clear advice! subscribed! greets from Finland.
Thanks! You will not be disappointed. I hope to visit Finland someday, or any of the other Nordic countries.
You should ;)
Muchas gracias por tu ayuda. Hace ya un año que tengo la Nikon d5300 y todabia no creo haber sacado todo el provecho a ella en video. Saludos desde el norte argentino.
+Julio Benitez ¡De nada!
THIS IS AWESOME! Thank you for sharing! I really appreciate your knowledge, I have so much to learn about video mode on my 5100.
+Emily F (thelittlepigeon) You're welcome! Just keep experimenting and practicing, and you'll see a noticeable improvement.
Hospitals are fairly well-lit and bright white. I would try my best to go without a flash. Which lenses do you have? Just the 18-55 kit lens? Try using a tripod at all times to decrease your shutter speed. If you have time, purchase a prime lens. This will pretty much guarantee you shots in the hospital without a flash. Don't be afraid to bump your ISO up to 3200 for pictures, but keep it below 1600 for video, unless you have noise reduction software.
Thanks for the tips man. First thing that came up on a google search for me
Hi there, may I ask? the camera that is used to shoot this video (not the short film), is it using a D5100?
+AdamShamil Bah! Yes, I used the D5100 to record this.
Thank you so much for this in-depth knowledge
Thank you for the lesson! Putting these tips to work now.
great one brother - its a great little machine and you just made it better
I'm glad you found the video useful!
Very nice tips bro. Keep up the good work. Really useful. These days I am already experimenting with my camera settings to make nice videos. I shoot gaming videos on mobile as well. Any specific suggestion for that? I use Nikkor 35mm F1.8G len and Nikon D5200 as Camera. I do not use kit lens ever since I have bought that 35mm because it is awesome.
Yes, I am familiar with that specific nomenclature of the 180 degree rule, but as most things that improve, evolve, and change throughout time such as film and cameras for example, these nomenclatures can change or provide multiple meanings. In this case, the digital age produced an additional meaning to the 180 degree rule which indeed has everything to do with shutter speed. It is an accepted term in the field, and to say it has nothing to do with shutter speed would be incorrect.
Great vid. Thanks for taking the time to make this and explain.
Josh Molleur You're welcome!
WOW! Great video!. Your a great speaker and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Hi
Great video and well done!
Could you name the polirizer you used
it seems to be really good one.
You're welcome! Make sure the camera is set to M, S, P, or A mode(s).
Hey, thanks a lot for this video. I use a Nikon D5000, but most of the settings you described I was able to find and play with. I had no ideea they influence the video as well. Coincidentally, I also shoot with the 35mm F1.8G you mentioned. As long as you shoot mostly static scenes, it's a brilliant lens and I found it enough for most shots.
Yeah, I love the 35mm lens. I found if I pull the camera strap tightly against the back of my neck while shooting video, it actually stabilizes the shot pretty well!
this is a great tutorial! Question: which circular polarizing filter you would recommend?
My lens is AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G
Thank you so much! I'm gonna buy a D5100 soon and this helped me a lot. I'm subscribing right now.
great video thank you. I love the on screen info, video insets and editing in particular. Which programs did you use for making this video tutorial? Thanks again
You're welcome! I used Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11.
@Dallas Just fyi, I shot this with a D5100, now I own a D5200 and it's just as capable. The music video starts after a brief introduction that was put together for the office itself but still shows some of the capabilities of the device.
Hello, AT 1:19 you explain how to set "Manage Picture COntrol. How can I skip the curser through letters I don't want to change to get to the part of the short text in order to edit? FOr example NOSTANDARD04 to change to NOSTANDARD01 or 02? I'm copletely new to this. Thanks
I can't speak for the D3200, but I do have both the 600D and the D5100. I prefer the D5100 for many reasons, but the 600D is easier to work with when it comes to manual video settings. They are both well performing cameras, and which is better is purely subjective. Ultimately, it is up to you!
I use Marumi polarizing filters. They are actually rated better than B+W polarizing filters, which are also good, but more expensive. I have a 52mm Marumi CPL for my 35mm f1.8, 40mm f2.8, and 18-55mm f3.5 kit lens.
D5100 + Nikkor 35mm F1.8G is the most amazing IQ with cheap equipment, I love it.
There are two versions of this lens. The older version will not autofocus on the D5100. The new version will autofocus, and has better lens coatings. You can find them both on Amazon.
Very simple and informative video. Learned a lot!
Great video very informative do you have the link to the movie you shot on the D5100?
UPDATE: I just got my Nikon 35mm f1.8G Lens......I'm anxious and excited......thanx for your help, Pro....
2024, this video still helps me
I'm so glad that I came across your video. I have a question. I've been asked by my client to photograph and take videos of the birth of their child. I have a Nikon D5100 and a SB-600 Flash. Do you have any suggestions whatsoever in making sure I get the best pic/images without a harsh flash that will hurt the baby?
Thank you very much! I've had my D5100 for over 5 years now and somehow, I never found the setting for custom picture control!
Hi! I use a Nikon d5100 as well and I'm gonna be shooting a music video at my garage with a full band. I will be using the sun as the main light source and I was wondering what's the best way to maintain the correct exposure throughout the shoot, knowing that the sun will have different light strength throughout the day. Great tutorials btw! And I really love your short films! :-) Cheers from the Philippines!
Have you seen my other tutorial about setting video exposure for low light? That might help you out. Noise is mostly ISO settings.
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I was also thinking about having an external mic because the in camera mic does not sound so good. Thanks for the H1 suggestion. I would definitely look into and the price is also looking reasonable. So you think the lens is good enough for making such kind of videos? I have one problem that if the mobile phone is closer to the lens then I can see the mesh gradient (don't know the technical term) sort of texture on the mobile screen in the video.
Excellent, very informative video. Thanks.
thanks so much :) I was about to buy a different camera to film with and I think I can work with what I have now, good stuff!
+iris muddy That's great! Good luck and have fun.
Ohh Got it. Thanks so much. :) I am happy with your tips. I really enjoy watching to your videos. They are great and inspire me to do something similar. I am having great results now with my videos. Thanks.
At 1minute really useful how to make a custom picture Control to change hue brightness contrast etc
Thanks
Great video! I learnt a lot ~ however, could you cover on video grains?? I keep getting grainy videos and I don't know why..
No problem! Yes, it should be one notch above NEGATIVE, not zero. I was going off of memory, and got it wrong. Thanks for pointing this out. I think I'll add an annotation in the video, as I think somebody else pointed this out as well.
