    Solution: Air piston/Air cup kit; put them on top of your coilovers. You get the best of both worlds: The ability to lift or lower your car while still maintaining the functionality of the coilovers.
    After being static for three years, this is the next step for me. Yes, I’d look ridiculous with the car lifted up, but I don’t have to worry about cracking oil pans or other components. Low for the show, lift for the go.

      The problem with the pneumatic cups is, you have to run a shorter spring. This equals a loss of shock travel. I do like the idea of the cups, but you'd need shortened struts to really pull it off.

    Looks are barely anything for me, I care much more for the styling of the car itself, and given my options, I'm not going to care much about ride height aside from performance

    Unless you track your car, or live in an area with pristine roads, Lowering Springs on OEM Struts is the way to go. I've tried KSports (with multiple spring rate setups) and BC Racing with Swift Springs, as well as custom lowering springs that ended up being the best of them all.
    The only reason you'd want coilovers over lowering springs is the ability to change dampener settings on the fly.
    Otherwise, for the street the harsh KSports turned on a dime, but bounced so much that I hit my head on the roof whenever there's a bump in the road.
    BC Racing is much more comfortable, but somehow doesn't initiate turns as aggressively as my lowering springs, and bigger bumps and dips still shook the car way too much.
    At +20%F/+25%R spring rate for my 4,100 lbs wagon, it turns a tame family wagon into a sporty family car that can handle just about everything you throw at it. It turns almost as good as the KSports with slightly slower turn initiation, holds the corners almost as well, and have none of the discomfort (a girl who knows nothing about cars gave the KSports a 3/10 for comfort and lowering springs a 7/10, IMO that much gain in comfort is worth the 0.2 second delay in turn initiation).
    I'm sure AIR is smoother than lowering springs, but I don't actually want something that smooth because of the way I drive. And because of the progressive nature of air, I'm sure it'll be slightly slower on turn initiation even if it holds the corner just as well.

Tie this into an ECU and find a way to adjust steering wheel stiffness to create a "Driving Mode" selector. You know, Track, Sport, Comfort. It would be nice to cruise day to day without feeling like someone karate chopping my neck all the time, yet corner like a boss when I want to get serious.

    You guys should really talk about the inbetween. Bag over coils air suspension. Using an air management system. And using universal air bags. And coilovers as a strut. Yes this goes against your sales pitch. But it by far the most probable way to go for someone who wants a it on air budget.
    Anyone that's interested in this look at blaine nojiri's videos on his Z's set up. Very informative. That's the super cheap way. If on a budget I would get the universal bags, ebay coils. And the 3H system. Hook it up and boom. Your good to go.
    Im trying to go silvers or zeal coils 9k front 7k rear, UAS bags, and a 3H management with an endo CVT.
    So if I ever want to hard drift. I can switch out the air bags for the springs. Disconnect the air wiring for the management. And go at it. And switch back when/if I want. Literally the best of both worlds.

    I live in the UK so roads are quite bumpy so it's quite a difficult decision coil overs would be better for racing and drifting but I'll end up scrapping my car on the road all the time we're as on bags, I can raise when driving on roads the lower when at a show

    I have a McPherson type suspension meaning that an inch and a half is the lowest max for a great handling car due to its former design. This is my reasoning for this option. Personally would bag my wifes 2016 Corolla over my 1989 VW Fox. All about how it works.

    So im thinking of running air suspension on my ride and here are the conditions:
    There is really only one track near where I live so that means that I wont get much time on it.
    the roads here are complete ass so It'd be cool to be able to bring my car up after showing it off so that I don't scrape anything
    and finally I think being able to lift and lower when ever you want is pretty cool.

    I had a Honda with air suspension many years ago and I had a ton of fun with it, could take my car thru places others couldn't and my wheels were secured at night because my body kit would sit completely on the ground, wheels tucked. It was really fun... until it wasn't.
    Custom paintjob basically went to shit due to the ripples down the doorskins, quarterpanels and trunk and numerous parts broke from the crazy amount of flex that system had. It was a 10 switch system; front and rear, side to side, full car and individual wheels all had a pretty decent range of lift and drop, going higher than stock and flush with the ground. I went thru body kits A LOT. The final straw for me was when the rear end dropped on the freeway with my kids in the back seat. Nope. Never again.

    • @leslie-tolman
      @leslie-tolman 4 года назад

      @Jose Adame Hahaha yeah air suspension can be rough, however, when it's set up appropriately and specifically to the vehicle, it's badass and sometimes saves your ass!! I don't know much about Range Rovers and their setups but I'm assuming you're running an aftermarket setup?? Or do those things come stock with an air setup?? My Honda already had the air ride setup on it when I bought it (I was 19 lmao.... bought a project car from a car lot.... never do that!!!) and I loved it, but it wasn't done right so it would slam the body kit on the ground completely~got expensive really quickly!! Mine didn't have limiters tho because they were air shocks only, no bumpstops basically. Depending on your setup etc, you should be able to level those out to be flush.... Lower end setups tend to have issues in this area, same with coilovers. I'd have a professional look at and fix them if it were me. You may need to upgrade your system to a better setup but most of the work is already done at least!! Good luck with it tho. I've got coilovers on my car, however, I'm gonna upgrade to a higher quality setup as soon as possible. Raceland ultimos are chill for the drop but no adjustments & fine tuning options, no camber/caster plates available, troublesome, bouncier than I like and I can't adjust damping/compression/rebound etc.

    • @leslie-tolman
      @leslie-tolman 4 года назад +1

      @Jose Adame gotcha. Can I offer you some advice?? It's really nice that you have a dad that will help you out with this type of stuff (do something nice for him man...) but you're gettin ready to take on the world on your own ~when your dad's out there fixing your ride, get out there and learn. Help do the work and take the initiative to have him teach you all basic maintenance skills, plus everything else you can learn. You'll save money by doing your own work (like thousands, no joke) and if something inevitably happens with any one of your future vehicles and your dad can't get to you, you won't be stranded waiting for assistance. Plus you'll have confidence and reward of doing your own work, which is great!! I actually have my 10 year old son doing all my oil changes (since he was 8 years old lol,) rotating my wheels and helping me with anything I'm working on. I want him to be self-sufficient when he's an adult so I'm starting him young.

  • @SushikiIIer
    @SushikiIIer Год назад +1

    Basically one approach requires you too manually change the spring end stop location but this leaves ride height and spring rebound independent of one another. While the the second approach offers you automatic height adjustment but will cause an increase in spring rebound when raising ride height and vice versa. Beyond spring rebound and manual vs automatic ride height adjustment there is little too no difference in the two approaches as either air bag or metallic springs can be mounted to pretty much any strut you may want (ie. dampening adjustment). So the general view that show cars benefit from bags and track cars benefit from coils is objectively pretty accurate.

    • @SushikiIIer
      @SushikiIIer Год назад

      Didnt think about this till I had wrote the comment but on a hypothetical basis if one could produce air springs that only changed pressure independent of height and magnetic dampers you could make an extremely effective active suspension system that could dynamically respond too both road and driving conditions

    Installing a fully-adjustable coilover on a car without properly setting it up is posing. It may look nice in your sigline, but you're actually hurting the car's handling. With an adjustable damper and adjustable perch heights you have just introduced new variables into the system of which you may have no understanding. If you don't understand them you are bound to under utilize them or worse: screw it up and actually take a step back in performance. "Aftermarket" does not mean "better", although you'd never know it from the signature envy on forums. Too many people purchase dampers without knowing WHY they want new ones in the first place. If you don't truly understand how the properties of a damper impact handling, how do you suppose you're going to adjust it properly? IMO you can't use it properly, but the kids at the local drive in will automatically think it's cooler and when you get down to it that is what most people are buying: coolness factor. Coilovers get really old in a daily driven car. They, are not meant for a daily driver, or even a casual enthusiast. They are for the track, and are adjustable for a reason.

    • @FitmentIndustries
      @FitmentIndustries  5 лет назад +1

      I mean coilovers can still be nice for everyday driving. Sometimes stock suspension gets old and worn out over time plus weather effects these things.

  • @tommyr95

    One aspect of air suspension that I don't see discussed is from a handling perspective. Historically convention coils (springs or coilovers) have been the norm for performance applications. What I'm curious about is if air suspensions have evolved to the point where your average enthusiast can have the best of both worlds: super adjustable ride height *AND* a suspension that can handle the demands of a track car. I'm old school and have always associated air with cars that want to look cool, but are mostly cruisers. I love the look, but would never want to sacrifice the handling capabilities of a coilover or regular ol' coil sprung suspension. Do these air suspension companies offer options for those of us who daily drive a low car, but also hit the track on occasional weekends? That's something I'd really be interested in learning more about. Thanks, guys, and keep up the good work on the channel.
