There are so many notes, but it never feels like a showoffy segment, but more like a cohesive composition. He's such a skilled, melodic drummer, always a pleasure to listen to!
Gojira being a band that, perhaps more than many others, rely on an almost ancient feeling percussive flow, its no wonder their drummer has the capacity to create art all on his lonesome. Hot damn.
What’s fascinating about this is that it reminds me of gojira style instead of just sounding like a typical, difficult drum solo as we’ve seen it a hundred times before.
What I love about this (and 'Minotaur) is that, not only are they technically impressive, but they sound and feel like actual songs and that every part of it fits. It's like he is telling a short, but powerful story through his kit. Amazing drummer.

Honestly this is a pretty good drum solo. Any drummer with access to the internet and knows a few basic drum concepts can spend 5 minutes trying to impress people with chops. But this is surprisingly melodic. Of course he has chops, but he always finds a way back into a the melody of the drum solo. This dude isn't just a drummer. He's a musician.
What I like about the solo is that it like a song. Not some random parts doing crazy fast shit to show off like a lot of drum solo's from other drummers. This just sounds great.
Technical proficiency...creativity...and originality...all in spades! This guy is what a drummer should be. Annnnnnd...in case no one has noticed...it's all room mics. How many drummers and drum kits sound THAT good with just room mics???? Perfectly tuned and played.

Absolute madman.. My first time listening to Gojira was "The Art of Dying" and Mario instantly became one of my favourite drummers ever. He is the best Metal drummer I have ever seen, hands down. Like if Peart took the Metal pill, this is what you would get \m/

I've been playing drums for the past 25 years now. I listen only to heavy metal, jazz and blues, for about 30y now. So I know a thing or two. Portnoy is a legend, but not as exciting anymore. So is Danny, the last tool album is fantastic. But they are consistent, brilliant drummers at what they do. Nothing new album in, album out. I can say the same about Thomas Haake, Richard Christy, Gene Hoglan and those other ungodly folks that are masters at this instrument. But, if you listen to every Gojira album, Mario is evolving his playstyle, chops, tricks, it all. I base my position on the fact that he is always evolving and bringing something new to the pot. The way he uses crashes, the odd times, unexpected chokes and fills. Everything seems different. It is REALLY hard to come up with new concepts and chops nowadays. Everything has been made before. By those exact ppl I mentioned before. Somehow he pulls it off. See? Maybe you have a different point of view and can change mine.

I'm a drummer, but there aren't many drummers whose solos I enjoy any more. They are all so samey. The only exceptions are Mario and Gavin Harrison. 2 of the greatest drummers I've ever heard/seen. The others at the pinnacle of drumming are Tomas Haake and Dominator, in my opinion. 🤘🏻
I found a new favourite drummer today, holy cheese flutes, this guy is incredible, I love how he kept reinterpreting the same phrase through triplets and quarters etc. Just started checking our Gojira too, pretty good stuff right there ;)
@@johnvincent1823 I grew up on Neil Peart, seen both him and Mario Duplantier live in person. And I can tell you that Mario has every right to be in the same sentence as Neil Peart. Mario is hands down the best death metal drummer i've heard and most creative. And i've been drumming for a long time to know that. I've played in Jazz bands, seen a lot of Jazz drummers, and Mario is up there with some of the best to ever do it.

I don’t know how I went so long with out knowing the band Gojira. I’ve only recently started listening to them in the last 3 or 4 months and I’m absolutely hooked. I don’t know if this has any bearing but I’m a big korn fan. Started listening to them in 1998 in middle school and have been obsessed ever since, and I just now discover this gem of a band. I listen to mouth of kala daily multiple times a day. The last minute and a half of that song is incredible.
A lot of people are saying "Neil Pert" because of recent events, but to me this solo feels like he's channelling John Bonham in a way i haven't seen anyone pull off before.

Listen his solo, it's not about licks but musical phrasing : you can sing what he's playing, try to achieve that, listen to lots of good music in many genres and you will never run out of ideas :)
Learning to read music helped me widen my horizon and try out different routes i would never have thought of myself . Keep having fun with it is rule number one !!
So he can play a whole show without his right leg falling off. A lot of drummers will do things like this for one-off showcases but will play it differently live in order to save energy and make it through a whole set

i tried this solo out with just a pad. and even when not hitting the right notes, this solo will really put your arms' endurance to the test.

That was amazing Mario!! You are such a big influence on my drumming style. How does someone with your talent stay creative with drumming? I find my self playing the same licks and practicing the same songs.
Listen his solo, it's not about licks but musical phrasing : you can sing what he's playing, try to achieve that, listen to lots of good music in many genres and you will never run out of ideas :)
Learning to read music helped me widen my horizon and try out different routes i would never have thought of myself . Keep having fun with it is rule number one !!

@@SageSavage I would say he's using the 'slide' technique here. I've rarely seen it played that fast! 😮
So he can play a whole show without his right leg falling off. A lot of drummers will do things like this for one-off showcases but will play it differently live in order to save energy and make it through a whole set
I watched 2:50 about 15 times trying to see what you guys are calling fast. Obviously you guys have never seen death metal drumming if you think this is fast. Yeah. That was smooth af divides the feeling of the solo very well. I'm not a drummer so I was confused about his snare and had to go back to see where he puts the snare on (i think the brush thingy is called snare, i'm not a drummer)
