    I got to see Gojira with Behemoth, Volbeat and Slipknot. Was a fantastic show all around. Gojira's presence and sound is so awe inspiring. Mario is a beast that truely feels what he is doing. I very much enjoyed this video as well. Seeing a professional become a fan of another professional makes me smile. My favorite Gojira song would have to be "Oroborus" off The Way of All Flesh album.

  • @MaMichels
    @MaMichels 3 года назад +6

    Yeees please more Gojira, they are BY FAR the band with the best complexity/groove ratio in metal period.
    As others have suggested, "Remembrance" from the Link alive is insane, especially from a drumming perspective.
    I'd also recommend "Clone", "Wisdome Comes" and "The Heaviest Matter in the Universe" for songs in a similar direction.
    If you want something a bit less intense maybe "Flying Whales" (Until it's not), "Born in Winter", "Only Pain" and "The Cell".
    Basically on every song Mario impresses, so there are only a few that aren't pretty intresting for a drummer I'd guess.

    3:50 (TLDR; It's more fluid)
    On the distance between the hat and snare; I asked a friend/prog metal guy who runs a similar setup.
    He said it's much more "fluid"/efficient to have them spaced like that as it's a similar distance to other pieces you would be 'rolling' through as you work your way around the kit, something that's pretty common to the genre (using a lot of rolling tom and cymbals across the kit, even for core parts of a song where backbeats and more traditional "cross work" between hat and snare would take place).
    The other reason he gave was that if you're moving quickly like this but also require a heavier use of force and less busy hat work, it's much easier to use some of the lateral energy of the arm and stick to strike more horizontally to the hat, (almost in a "push-pull' kind of way, but using the movement of the entire arm with the weight of the hand and stick) instead of having to waste energy raising your left hand up in an arc when switching between snare and hat.
    Apparently this is also why it's more common to see metal guys run lower hats the further they get away from the snare (depending on the requirement of the playlist obviously).

    The Silver Cord Studio is owned by Mario's brother, Gojira's singer and lead guitar Joe Duplantier. Why in NY? Because their mother was Portuguese-American and he has American nationality, as well as French. She went to France to study, met her husband there and never left until her death in 2016. The Magma album is a tribute to her, since her parents were from the portuguese volcanic islands of the Azores. The brothers were raised and lived almost all their lives in France but they were always curious about their mother's roots, so they moved to NY in 2015 to build the studio in Queens.
    On the topic of drummers with weird setups (and even weirder ways of playing), you should react to Jinjer's drummer, Vlad. There are some videos of him playing on Jinjer's official YT channel. I don't have a favourite because they're all good. : )

    About the hi-hat placement - while it's usually a product of using two bass drums more so than a double pedal, it looks like he has it that far out by design or maybe is using a legged stand. With a legless HH stand and a bass drum clamp, you could probably get it 6-8" closer (think HH pedal right next to the left bass pedal) Single kick/double pedal set ups give you more freedom on the placement of the slave pedal and the hi-hat. I guess that's his set up preference and it certainly doesn't hamper his playing. It's surprising what wacky set ups you can get used to by playing on them regularly.

    • @IdFear666
      @IdFear666 3 года назад

      This. The HH absolutely doesn't have to be placed differently if you don't want to!

    if you're gonna do more goh jee ruh i'd suggest Where Dragons Dwell mario has said that sometimes/when he extends the song on his part, on this song, he ends up going numb and starts getting close to unconsciousness, y'know what let me find the uh comment that relayed that...
    Troy Lundrigan
    7 months ago
    *This is a from Mario's Instagram page posted from September 27th, 2019 *
    "From Mars to Sirius was released 14 years ago, today.
    Where Dragons Dwell from the album « From Mars to Sirius » is the most intense Gojira song to perform live. Especially because of the ending. This song, which speaks of confronting your own personal demons, always fascinated me with it’s demanding physical performance. The end section is a complete corporeal trance for me. With a relentless double kick pattern at 180bpm lasting from 4-9 minutes.
    I use all the force in my knees and thighs to generate the energy required to execute this section. The first minute of demanding thirty-second notes is hard on my body, and the following minute is when my legs start to tingle. From that point on it’s so intense that my mind starts to drift a little.
    With this intensity at a maximum level, sometimes the trance transports me beyond the pain. It even feels like my body is floating above the drum kit.
    Naturally, when the song is over and I come out of the trance, there are consequences sometimes. When we extend the part for almost 10 minutes, I’ve actually felt like I was going deaf, and even had sensations of numbness in my pelvis and legs for a few seconds after the song is over." «#drums #gojira #power #frommarstosirius #wheredragonsdwell #hellfest2013 #deathmetal #heavymetal @officialtamadrums @zildjiancompany @hellfestopenair

    Yesss, love it.
    My favourite solo of Mario (shortest one though) is the one in Poland Rock (lovely fat sounding drums), would be cool to see you reacting to it.
    Some Band recommendations:
    Remembrance Live at the Link Alive (this is some oldschool Gojira from 2003) mario was 22!
    Pretty heavy, but digestable heavyness, if that makes sense.
    In the forest also at the Link Alive concert, awesome song written by Joe (Mario’s brother) when he lived for over a year in the woods, some technical drumming as well.
    Indians, live at the Vieilles charrues concert, some heavy, tech drumming.
    So much more to recommend but i don’t want to overwhelm you.
    Really hope you’ll continue reacting to them.
    They’ve become much more progressive now and less death metal. It’s their natural evolution, said the frontman Joe. I like their evolution, even though, i really hope their new album that will be released next year, will go back to some technical guitar riffs combined with Mario’s lovely fills. Fingers crossed.
    Cheers from Belgium

Mario is a beast. :]]] I saw you do the People = Shit live video also and I watch that one a lot personally since I got into them in the past few years. I was more into prog and into more melodic stuff at the time. You have covered most of the best drummers I personally enjoy. Portnoy is my favorite... Mangini, marco minneman, casey grillo, gavin harrison, etc. Not sure who to recommend LOL. I can't find good drum videos of Nevermore but I'd highly recommend checking them out. They are pretty metal. Same for Jason Rullo ( symphony x ). Also there are some pretty unknown prog bands like katatonia and riverside that are beyond phenomenal but they do not get enough recognition. May not be drum centric but you may appreciate the jams.
