I first heard Larnell several years ago when he was a last-minute sub for a CD release party in Toronto. I’m not even sure if it was kit. But the gig was in a funky art gallery. Our seats were literally six feet from the kit (shallow “stage” on the floor that went from the kit on the right to double bass, baby grand piano and singer). I’d always liked the drums to some extent, having played in high school. Jazz was okay to me, depending on the artist and song. But that evening made my mind explode. Larnell had never even rehearsed with the band. There were hushed conversations little longer than a football huddle and off they went. I’d never seen or heard anything so plugged in, so intuitive, so dynamic or so intimately wired into the soul of a song in my life. And I’ve been a massive fan ever since. Spoken to him very briefly a couple of times and he is SO humble that it almost hurts. And he’s always learning and sharing. I love how much you enjoy this man's creativity. When people can appreciate the beauty that one creates and doesn't get wrapped up on external presence still gives hope for love and unity. I appreciate your appreciation sir.
11:20 every musician has felt that feel you're feeling here. Where you come across someone who is an absolute master of their craft and you are just speechless at what they can do, even when you yourself are highly-skilled. Half of you wants to just hang it up, when you realize how much there is to learn (and how much work it would take to get there), and the other half is energized and inspired by seeing what magic is possible on your instrument. Larnell Lewis is such an amazing musician, truly inspiring.
The _range_ of expressions across your face from 11:25 on is absolute GOLD! Love it, i LOVE seeing that face of pure appreciation of the craft, amazement at a show of such skill, ah, super. Cheers made, brilliant vid
Man when you stopped that video after the first intro, I knew you was a REAL one cause I felt the same way. How did he do that after listening to the song like two times? That intro with the toms was ridiculously clean
The intro emulated the sax then broke of into a samba jam he’s so technically proficient at playing sounds & theory helps him weave in and out of music with ease. Bravo!
We’re on stage in half an hour and our drummer is sick, what are we gonna do. Hold up is it a bird is it a plane no it’s Larnell Lewis, HERE I DRUM TO SAVE THE DAY
Larnell is a truly blessed man. He is one of the best in the scene and so gentle, kind and likes to inspire everyone to not just playing drums but playing music. I'm speechless with his drummi g here and his attitude. Truly a inspiration for us all. One day i will have my kit and start to hitting some drums. And Andrew, like always, you did an awesome reaction. I'm not drummer or musician but i like your channel very much.
I'm not lying when I say I had the shivers on this performance from the start to finish. He is just on another level. This is what true musician looks and sounds like.
Just learnt about Larnell Lewis last night and have been binging his videos and as soon as I heard you counting I had to check if you were from NZ love it
OK seriously??? Your title way undersold this. I was expecting to hear something like a rock or metal song with fairly straightforward stuff going on and then just cover it. I was not expecting a jazz piece with tons of nuance and him actually creating a drum part. I'm a lifelong violinist who is "pretty good" at drums on Rock Band (the game), so I at least can appreciate the insane level of talent here.
I really love seeing your reaction videos, especially your thoughts and reactions towards it. You have so much experiences that shows a deeper understanding on what's happening in that vid. give me more!
He's incredible obviously. Playing a chart that smooth and on time after listening only once is ridiculous. And he's wearing a pair of Vans hi-tops, so he's beyond cool.
When I first saw this clip I think I watched it three times--at least the final performance by Larnell. He's truly one of the absolute greats--not only for his technical skills but the tastiness to how he approaches it. You nailed it on the head by calling him a musician, not just a drummer.
One of my favorite "local" bands, The Midnight Devils, was booked for the Rocklahoma music festival one year. Their drummer was so strung out on drugs that they had to fire him. They met another drummer who learned their entire playlist (all original stuff) in one day and has been with the band ever since.
Dude, this is the first time I've seen you. But i love how you respond and respect this dude. Your cut to the guy with tears; and that was how I thought you were feeling before the clip showed up.😆 I had to stop watching and write my comment. Dude, you seem like a great guy and soooo in love with 🎵🎶. I'm just starting at playing guitar at 60. You and that guy on the video really inspire me. Be blessed, ✌🏼🦁
Wow, that's amazing. I don't even play drums or any instrument nor am I musical in any way but was still mindblown and not only appreciated this guy but appreciated your appreciation of him lol. Such precision in a short amount of time. What a skill and talent.
I always love hearing drums on these kinds of genre (jazz if im not mistaken) because from the judgement of my ears they are the ones which have alot of change in beats.
“Lifelong commitment to music, not just drumming but music” is about as apt a description of an example of musicianship at this level as I’ve ever heard
I have never even played a drum in my life but I really enjoy your channel man.. love watching a truly talented person's jaw drop when they get to watch a god play so truly clean and effortlessly.. I think one of his parents must have been a drum.... Baaadabum
I started learning to play drums a few days ago ... but now I understand that the depths of this instrument have not yet been explored. Great video! Awsome inspiration. !!!
Quickest I've EVER learned a song was 3 days....and that was listening to the same song...all day, playing it physically on the drums for about 10 hours (drum lesson included) and air drumming at home every second of free time! 😂
LOL, and Thank You Andrew! I have watched this a few times on other channels, but you nailed what I could not figure out; Chick Corea's post "Romantic Warrior" sound from my "70's college days! Bravo to you and the incredible musicianship and fearlessness of Larnell in tackling this challenge.
Dont usually comment too much but this is what I heard Planned an into of drums into the piece Next was to enhance /build around the core instrument which was the sax. Then allows the sax to lead while the drums fall back. During the refrain drums jump back in to contribute to the piece Keeps up with the sax as to say drums can stick with the sax During the organ solo, it was like the drums were a train and the organ was a whistle going from town to town, Drums fall back with the guitar solo almost playfully Before the piece enters the build, drums get a say in the piece with a solo,,,
again, what a talent!!! without a doubt, knows his jazz, and so much that has come before!!! Know your stuff, your musical influences, know them well, it pays off!!
Absolutely incredible! You can tell the difference between a musician hearing the music and a drummer playing the song. A HUGE difference. I would bring in a friend (bassist), Ron Jenkins playing the bass part on a song and then having me (primary inst. guitar) play bass on the same tune. Ron would make it sound like he had played the song all his life when the first he heard it was his first time through to hear it. I could’ve practiced it for a week and still have user errors. Ron is not only the best bassist I’ve ever played with but he’s a great guy to just hang out with. Each night we played was like sitting front row w/Victor Wooten. I never wanted the night to end! 🎵🎶❤️😷🤘

The _range_ of expressions across your face from 11:25 on is absolute GOLD!
Love it, i LOVE seeing that face of pure appreciation of the craft, amazement at a show of such skill, ah, super. Cheers made, brilliant vid
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is world class musicianship
What a wonderful drummer. Larnell, Larnell, Larnell. Just fantastic and always teaching and showing us new incredible ways to go.
One of the best!
Your stank face when he started playing was gold! Great to see other drummer reactions to Larnell's ability 👌🏾
Man when you stopped that video after the first intro, I knew you was a REAL one cause I felt the same way. How did he do that after listening to the song like two times? That intro with the toms was ridiculously clean
this is what happens when a gift is nurtured with a superior work ethic,,, art is produced
🙌 well said Nick
Your love and respect blew me away. You love the drums for sure.
Terence Fletcher couldn't even find anything wrong with this. INSANE.
Not quite my tempo. 😂
I was known, in high school, to learn songs very fast but this.. This is at a stratospheric new level! I'm completely in awe and humbled!
Hard to fathom this level of musician
The fact that he doesn't stumble ONCE on those half-beat drops is FUCKING INSANEEEEE
I don’t think many understand just how jaw dropping that is
The intro emulated the sax then broke of into a samba jam he’s so technically proficient at playing sounds & theory helps him weave in and out of music with ease. Bravo!
Yes Don!
I'm not a drummer, but I definitely understand the complexity of this and it's FUCKING CRAZY
Yes it's crazy
Beautiful
I get really emotional from beautiful skilled music, his performance had me misty eyed the whole time.
Thank you. It was a pure and refreshing moment of shared happiness.
GREAT!
I'm not lying when I say I had the shivers on this performance from the start to finish. He is just on another level. This is what true musician looks and sounds like.
Yes Samuel! It's just a thing of beauty. Bringing a track to life like that WOW
Just learnt about Larnell Lewis last night and have been binging his videos and as soon as I heard you counting I had to check if you were from NZ love it
Excellent!
Pretty special player Richard!!!
Check out Snarky Puppy for more absolutely dank and ridiculously filthy drumming by Larnell. He's one of the greats.
Who asked
@@eshmaabeats8362 who asked for your words
Fellow Rock Band drummer and real life guitarist/bassist here. I can not agree more.
I really love seeing your reaction videos, especially your thoughts and reactions towards it. You have so much experiences that shows a deeper understanding on what's happening in that vid. give me more!
Thank you so much Martinus!!
He was a drum set in a previous life. 🥁 Knowledge and ridiculous feel no doubt.
YES!
It's so fun watching master's work. Even a pro like you breaking down another pro, it's so awesome and fills in so many inquisitive holes I have
He makes me never want to play the drums again. Back to the recorder I go!!!!
HAHA!
bruhhhh.... man gosh dang!!! man is just a machine and now I will never pick up drum sticks again lol
I couldn't even find the beat when listening to the raw track. Man is a genius.
Unreal skill
Your cut to the guy with tears; and that was how I thought you were feeling before the clip showed up.😆
I had to stop watching and write my comment.
Dude, you seem like a great guy and soooo in love with 🎵🎶.
I'm just starting at playing guitar at 60.
You and that guy on the video really inspire me.
Be blessed,
✌🏼🦁
Thank you so much Leo. I appreciate your comments :)
Wow, that's amazing. I don't even play drums or any instrument nor am I musical in any way but was still mindblown and not only appreciated this guy but appreciated your appreciation of him lol. Such precision in a short amount of time. What a skill and talent.
This guys dynamics are so tasty.
Yes. Beautiful!!
Chop nasty
I always love hearing drums on these kinds of genre (jazz if im not mistaken) because from the judgement of my ears they are the ones which have alot of change in beats.
The sound from those TOMS on this video is out of bounds tight. So good.
Yes Alexander. His sound is literally perfect. Every note sounds like a sample
“Lifelong commitment to music, not just drumming but music” is about as apt a description of an example of musicianship at this level as I’ve ever heard
I love how he's so humble about it too, the absolute cyborg
Yup!
I have never even played a drum in my life but I really enjoy your channel man.. love watching a truly talented person's jaw drop when they get to watch a god play so truly clean and effortlessly.. I think one of his parents must have been a drum.... Baaadabum
That feeling you get when you watch someone do something that you thought you were really good at way better than you've ever done it.
I started learning to play drums a few days ago ... but now I understand that the depths of this instrument have not yet been explored. Great video! Awsome inspiration. !!!
Excellent!
HAHAH I had the EXACT same reaction when he first started playing! Headphones off, nope, nope, HOW WAS THAT SO PERFECT?!?!?!
Yes! HAHA!
Dont usually comment too much but this is what I heard
Planned an into of drums into the piece
Next was to enhance /build around the core instrument which was the sax.
Then allows the sax to lead while the drums fall back.
During the refrain drums jump back in to contribute to the piece
Keeps up with the sax as to say drums can stick with the sax
During the organ solo, it was like the drums were a train and the organ was a whistle going from town to town,
Drums fall back with the guitar solo almost playfully
Before the piece enters the build, drums get a say in the piece with a solo,,,
I liked the “That’s a reference to another song?”
30 seconds later: This reminds me of Spain
again, what a talent!!! without a doubt, knows his jazz, and so much that has come before!!! Know your stuff, your musical influences, know them well, it pays off!!
You got it Douglas!
I started crying because I did the exact same thing when the intro hit. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
HAHA
Isn’t it wonderful! Art! 💯👌
Amazing reaction bro! Love Larnell's video so much, too.
Glad you enjoyed!
The reference in the second solo was Spain. a great number played by many artist
His pure joy and unbounded delight is matched only by his stank face.
My god….I could fall asleep just listening to his voice,so clam! His drumming and impro is amazing.
When he took his headphones off.............I felt that. 💯💯💯
Yup! lol
