      I bet the first time his parent's through on tunes to clean, whole house probably went slack jawed at once, as he plopped down in a diaper, and schooled a pro, on pots and pans, so hard they felt it reverberate back through the CD player... maybe cassette.

    My favourite part of this video was that Bryan wants to go listen to something where Larnell has had a ton of practice and played the song a million times, and there's a 95% chance he's going to end up listening to something from We Like It Here (probably Lingus), where he learned all the songs on the plane flight to Europe, and played them on a kit for the first time at the live recording.

  • @27holyman

    If you've never heard Lingus by Snarky Puppy by now you really should, I honestly think it is one of the best jazz odysseys of all time

      Incidentally, the We Like It Here session is yet another example of Larnell Lewis learning/composing his parts on the fly and in a short time frame before playing it perfectly on camera.

    • @MarcoNierop
      @MarcoNierop 3 года назад +42

      @@JediMobius Larnell Lewis was not even the drummer that should be on that record.. He was flown in after the original drummer got difficulties with his visa to get to The Netherlands, where this was recorded.. He litterly was called 3 days before the recording sessions , and had 4 hours before the recording started.. He learned the parts while on the plane from Canada, where he lives... and he nailed it! The record We Like it Here became an Emmy winner.
      I was in the audience during one of these recording sessions. They did 4 identical sessions and picked the best versions of the songs to put on the record/DVD... I have my 5 seconds of fame on the DVD LOL!.. Awesome experience to be there in that makeshift studio in an old building, that has been demolished by now (Kytopia Utrecht).. I was sitting right beside Larnell!

  • @andrewtlockemanch
    @andrewtlockemanch 3 года назад +38

    At 3:30 he literally DID know what that line was going to be because it was lifted from Chick Corea’s “Spain”. Larnell has likely heard that song dozens, if not hundreds, of times. The keyboardist “quoted” the line from Spain, which is why Larnell said “I hear that quote”.

    On the list of greatest drummers, Larnell Lewis belongs at the top with the likes of Neil Peart, Danny Carey, Buddy Rich, et al. This is a guy who learned a whole setlist for a crazy talented jazz fusion band (Snarky Puppy) during a plane flight to the gig, then went in and just murdered it. An absolute legend.

    I have played drums for soprano Measha Brueggergosman, great, challenging gig! I’m also an engineer in Toronto, so for an album I was doing with her, we got Jerry Granelli to play on most of the album, which was awesome. Larnel was invited to play drums in a couple of songs as well, he lives a couple of blocks from the studio, so he just used my Ludwig 1972 blue oyster and it was the best it’s ever sounded. On one of the songs he played some percussion. However on that song we had Jerry playing, who did not record with a click. There were a few sections that were pretty wavy time wise, he heard it once, and then recorded tambo, shaker and cajon exactly as Jerry had played them. It was pretty awesome to witness that happen first hand.

    To be fair, if you studied jazz for a while, it's not impossible to guess what comes next accurately.
    I know a lot of jazz drummers who studied another instrument like piano or guitar for that exact reason.
    This is also why music school generally require you to play another instrument alongside your main instrument.
    I noticed this too with myself.
    I come from guitar first so I studied melody, chord progression etc.
    While I wasn't technically the best drummer by like a long shot within my friendgroup, I was able to play to the other musicians on the spot much better.
    This dude is like on like a universe beyond tho. Such a beast.
    Great teacher too!

    The bit of melody he predicted is a variation on a motif. Pretty common device to use in jazz, to reference a feel by passing reference to a specific instance of it. Motifs are often used like this. (Edit: I posted this comment about halfway through. At the end, Larnell says it himself, in his referring to specfic things that other musicians in the ensemble are doing as a guide to approach)
    He is brilliant, but his brilliance is a skill, and anybody sufficiently interested to put in the work to attain mastery can do so, barring actual physical limitations.
