What Dirk does to this song is nothing short of phenomenal.
We're all familiar with the almost happy go lucky feel of the original song but by changing the drums slightly it makes the song actually heart breaking.
The impact the drums have on a song should never be underestimated
Well said
Yes! "I'm coming out of my cage, and I've been doing JUST FINE." Sounds very self-depreciating with the half-time. Very sombre.
Just amazed at how he created that after listening to the song once. The song "map" he developed was effortless and just so impressive, showing he has intellectual mastery over his talent. It's next level brilliant and gives me a whole new appreciation for musicians and their abilities. Like that looked like super smart shit and he did it so quickly. That's a man who is a master of his profession. Phenomenal
Exactly. He also seems like a super humble and down to earth guy. Read a comment from a Drumeo cameraman saying basically exactly that and how great he was to work with.
Nice to hopefully see him getting some recognition from people outside the metal community.
Thank you!
Dirk Verbeuren is/was a legend way before Megadeth - imo they were lucky to get him. Love or hate the genre/s he got known for, when it comes to blast beats/death metal ... he is routinely counted among the best. He brings the "Ringo, Bonham, and Rich" mindset and inventiveness to those genres. He's solid as oak, and has this thing for making familiar sound songs sound fresh. His fill work is amazing.
Absolute truth this is. His Soilwork era is my favorite. His presence is always very significant in the band and his drums affect songs a lot.
I loved his drumming on the Devin Townsend song Juular, it was so constant and up tempo on the double kicks that the blast beat sections were the most restful part for him.
Listening to the ride majestic right after this@@wcw07
Hey Justin, when playing double kick you will typically add a drop clutch to the top hi-hat cymbal which allows you to set an "open" spacing which can be closed by hand - either closing it with your fingers or tapped by a drum stick. This allows you to play with a tight or washy hi-hat sound without using your hi-hat pedal, although you can still use the pedal to close the hi-hat if needed. You can see it in some of the close shots of his left hi-hat. He also uses a remote hi-hat on the right side, which can also be a different size to the main hats for tonal variation. Hope this helps!
Band-Maid also uses this heavily. You can watch a lot of their videos and see her doing this because of just how fast she's pedaling the kick.
don't think they had those in the 70s 80s 90s?
@@Ian-if2lf When I bought my kit in the late 80s it had a double peddle setup and I got a drop clutch to put on my hi-hat then.
The drop clutch adaptor is for Tama kits, other kits don't usually have them but nothing stopping you using one.

The best part of this is the joy it brought everyone in watching and those in the booth even the camera man let alone spell himself
Drummer and Drumeo member here. I don’t play double kick but know that for those who do, the left foot moves between hi hat pedal and left kick pedal. Also, Drumeo just released an another video in this series where a Julliard Jazz professor plays “In Bloom” by Nirvana.
Yes!!! And most of us who play double kick either have a drop hi-hat clutch (which is pretty nifty. Lars, for example, uses it) OR two hi-hats, one regular and another one by the ride cymbal, either closed tight or half closed, kinda shimmery.
When playing double kick I like to have my left kick pedal tucked in as close to the hi hat pedal as possible, so I can keep my left heel on the hi hat and play open/closed hi hat patterns while being able to throw in double kick triplets.
When I'm fully wailing on the double kicks, I'll use a hi hat clutch as necessary, like @NikkLiberos mentioned above.
Drummond nerd here too. I just finished the Nirvana one and that was a blast to watch as well.
Disappointed in the Nirvana video. Didn't seem like he was putting in the effort as other drummers did.
As an old school drummer (been playing since I was 6, I’m 58 last week) I would like to inform drummers everywhere that those are bass drums not “kick” drums. Do you kick your drums? I do not. Don’t really know where that perverse nomenclature came from, but we need to fight this tyranny of words!😂😂😂😂
I'm a drummer and Drumeo member too lol and I have absolutely loved this series where they present drummers with unfamiliar songs, but Dirk was legendary, love his Megadeth stuff!
I can't decide if it's your musical knowledge or your sense of humor that keeps me coming back, but regardless, I always walk away having learned something new and am always smiling if not laughing aloud. Thanks for all you do, you are much appreciated. 🤘🤙✌️
I feel the same
same here...
Dirk is a phenomenal player. I first saw him in 2005 at ozzfest. I was and still am blown away at his abilities. He is just ridiculous.
As a kid i was obsessed with guitarists but when i hit my mid 30s i got a massive appreciation for drummer's and the contributions they have made to music.
In Dirk's notes, I see "not 2nd time" after "Epic" and "Guit Big" after "Chorus." Big guitar! Dirk's a tremendous player. Fun stuff.
Drummer here! You often get very special clamp for the hi-hat stand that bolts it to the kick drum. This eliminates the need for the extra legs that make the stand a tripod, normally. That way you don't have to span quite as far from the left kick to the hi-hat pedal. They're side-by-side once you've done that. I dunno what maniacs like Ginger Baker and Nick Mason did, back in the day. There may have been some hacksaw-and-gaff tape magic at work.
As for what you do with the hi-hat while you're playing that extra kick drum: A lot of the time the drummer just moves his right hand to the ride cymbal or floor tom. A lot of guys keep their hi-hats fairly close together, even in fully the open position, so that if they are playing hi-hat while doing the dugga-dugga, it's just a bit of slosh. Sterling Campbell keeps his hats so close that you can barely slide the tip of an ink pen in between them, even though he plays single pedal pretty much all the time. Honestly, how far do you need the hi-hats to open, after all?
I love how his drumming gave the song a completely different feeling.
After Soilwork's "Figure Number Five", I wasn't expecting much for the next record. I picked it up and was blown away. Not only was the songwriting and mix so much better, but it was Dirk's first album with them and I'd never heard drumming like that before. He's a legend in the metal world for his abilities and feel.
My brother had the pleasure of touring with Soilwork several years ago. He said Dirk is the sweetest dude and he'd pretty much grown into the role of running most of the logistical machinery behind the band. We've been happy to see him get the Megadeth gig, though it does bum me out that he can't really be "Dirk" in that band. But I'm sure he's enjoying the perks.
Dirk Perks
I couldn't agree more with the start of the first paragraph and the end of the last... Dirk's work with Soilwork was incredible, some of the most complex and amazing drumming I've ever heard, such a creative and professional musician.
When he left Soilwork to join Megadeth, my heart broke and I couldn't help but feel he'd taken a step down musically.
I miss him in Soilwork. But, I am happy for him getting offered the Megadeth throne. Guy is just amazing.
I've watched this Drumeo episode at least a hundred times! Dirk is an amazing drummer. He has given some really thoughtful interviews including one conducted by his fellow bandmate Kiko. It was fascinating to get an insight into Dirk and the reason why he is always smiling! A very talented drummer!
I can’t stop watching it.
I love Megadeth. And it’s not always easy with Dave! But, the best thing he’s been (mostly) consistent with is surrounding himself with top-of-the-line musicians. Dirk is no exception!
Exactly!
I wonder if that’s the reason why he fires them!
@nima665 because its Dave 😂
@@nima665 I wouldn’t be surprised if that was a motivating factor behind at least one of them.
The opening rudiment is called a drag with two grace notes followed by a normal note.
He also has two hi-hats, a right and a left one, each set with varying degrees of decay.
Hey Justin, to answer your hi-hat double kick question; when you’re playing double kicks/pedals the hi-hats tend to usually stay open for the duration of the part. Some drummers use their heel to try to keep the hats down whilst the balls of their feet operate the other pedal, sometimes they have half a foot on the hi hat pedal and half a foot on the kick to keep the hats pulsing.
Another cool thing that exists is a clutch that the drummer can hit to drop the hi hats if they need them closed-ish and stomping on the hi hat pedal locks the clutch to the cymbal again opening it up once more.
If they’re not doing that, they will have a completely separate hi hat that is always closed or is operated with a remote pedal or sometimes even the latter with a clutch.
There are many options out there. I hope it was informative!
Dirk is super-human. People may not like me saying this, but I believe that Dirk is the best musician Dave Mustaine has ever had in Megadeth.

Dirk is a badass and seems to be a fine, fine gentleman. Love the Drumeo stuff,...especially those hear the song for the time redos. Awesome.
You really need to watch 66Samus cover Zeppelin. I think it's the best performance of that entire series. Does a 10-minute cover on the first take and absolutely nails it.
I love his creativity and the sound of the kit. Well done.
Dirk is an absolutely killer drummer. Not a metal fan but you cannot go past his technique, feel and ability. First time hearing the track without drums and he busts this out… amazing.
I love these Drumeo videos, it’s a pleasure to hear your commentary!
Both descriptions of bad drummers - ‘Less swing than a broken arm’ and ‘shed-builders’ - sent me 😂
Agreed. This Drumeo series is A+ content. Wish we had more of them.

Baard Kolstadt from Leprous is another example of a loose grip drummer. He's my my favorite drummer all-time and he isn't even 30 yet. You could probably react to his drum playthrough of The Sky is Red. Their singer is incredibe too.
Dirk is awesome. Has his own blastbeat.
Love this series by drumeo so much. Its really fascinating. This performance, for example, makes it like a power rock emo thing, totally changes the vibe. Makes the vocal performance wayy more dramatic feeling lol

Love Dirk. I saw him with Soilwork some years ago.
Ps: He played in Scarve as well. Great technical French metal band.
I've been fortunate enough to have had Dirk write and record drums for MY RIFFS! An absolute legend, one of my favorite drummers ever (check Scarve - Irradiant).
Fun fact, this makes me removed by 1 degree of separation from Megadeth (and 2 from Metallica!!)

Hi Justin. I’ve always adored the classic jazz muso joke… “So many drummers, so little time”. Thank you xx ❤️
I love that Drumeo channel. I don't play, but I still go there from time to time for the interesting content. They have a few other drumers who regularly do the same premise of learning a track on the fly. It's always fascinating to watch
Wow I would never have found this dude without your reaction video and channel. So glad I checked out the full version. Insanely good...no pun intended. Thank you👊
Drummers can really make or break a song. I was listening to some earlier Radiohead albums and I realized they probably wouldn't have gone very far without Phil. The way he could listen to Thom's and Jonny's kind of ephemeral walls of sound and put a beat to it to enable the song. Brilliant.
Anyway
Much love to you Mr Hawkins ❤
Phil Selway is a human metronome, I'm sure of it.
@00:38 I keep hearing Freddy Mercury in that intro.... legends both!
I've never heard of Dirk before but I appreciate him as an extremely skilled musician, I love watching experts do their thing with generosity in sharing their techniques with others, thanks JH and youtube for filling in some time of my insomnia.
Regarding the use of 2 bass drums and hi-hat, one way to deal with this is to use a drop-clutch. The hi-hat clutch is the the fitting that holds the top hat cymbal to the inner rod which moves up and down with the hat pedal. A drop clutch has a little lever which when hit with a stick, drops the top hat cymbal down on to the bottom cymbal (which you would do as you swap your left foot from hat pedal to left bass drum pedal) so that when you are using two bass drums the hats are set to a kind of loosely closed position.
When you swap your foot back to hat pedal and press your foot down, the drop-clutch picks the top hat cymbal back up and the hi-hat system works as normal.
Usually, double bass drum kits have a modified high hat with no legs with an added clamp that connects to the bass drum rim. Some use a bracket to tie the high hat pedal and bass drum pedals together side by side. Some use a cable hat. The foot pedals are tied together while the high hat is mounted from a stand.
Dirk's awesome, one of the best and yet most humble drummers I've ever seen
Off all the videos drumeo made in this series, this one is the most amazing. The casual metal vocabulaire that slips in every so often is hilarious, but not at all out of place. Dirk is just such a fantastic drummer.
I love watching professional musicians like this. So smooth, so intelligent.
Your show in Paris was spectacular, what an amazing experience !

Dirk is a such a cool dude. I met him when we toured with his old band soilwork. I can see why he got the megadeth gig. He's not just a great player. He's an awesome human. No ego. Super approachable.
Amazing drummer. Where I live it was hard finding good drummers, and the one that I got to jam with for a bit ending dyingfrom drugs. Drummers are royalty, don't take them for granted !
Justin casually dropping a bit of eugenics sprinkled with some craneology.
this was so cool. a good friend of mine is an amazing drummer and hearing him talk about it like mathematics leaves my brain melted - i can improv and drum quite well . . . but nothing compares to this -what fun
Just surfing around at 130am and came across this, found you to very entertaining to watch. You have a great sense of humor and explain things so even those of us that have zero musical ability can understand the nuance of what is being done.
Dirk is amazing! One of the best drummers out there!
Justin, to do the 6 degrees of separation thing with you and Dirk is very easy. Dirk used to be a session and touring musician for the incredible Devin Townsend (Pandemic from the album Deconstruction is a riot!). Darby Todd of the former your drummer role is now the current touring and session drummer for the venerable Devin Townsend. It’s a small world.
Appreciate much your generous approach to your commentary Justin. Lovely!

Justin (great name... it's one we share!). I have been really enjoying these Drumeo vids w/ these absolutely amazing drummers showing off their chops. This has nothing to do w/ the Drumeo video and it feels like a Chris Farley interview segue, but I am wondering if you remember playing the Fox Theater the second time around on the same leg of a tour around 6 or 7 years ago in Riverside, California? I was at that show and there was maybe fifty people in the audience... it was so bizarre, but was really an awesome way to see you & the rest of the guys perform (saw your first US tour in the early 2000's in some small bar in San Diego for the "Permission to Land" tour, it rocked my my ass off so much my ears wouldn't stop singing,,,, errrr, I mean ringing for days, lol. Keep up the rockin' man. Let me know when you tour w/ Greta Van Fleet, I'll get front row seats for that!!!
I’m a rock and metal drummer but started playing jazz so my foundation is rooted in fundamental rudiments, improv and swing. It’s helped my fills and comfort with trying new genres. I would love to do something like this.
I have been a Megadeth fan from the beginning. I fell off around 2000 and until Dirk joined them. He’s awesome 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻💯
That was fun, I shared it.
I stumbled across this video a bit ago and had to dive head first down the Drumeo wormhole. Absolutely brilliant. I love this one and also love all of the ones with Domino Santantonio. Really fun premise.
the word youre looking for justin, is mellow drumming. i love this...
The best musicians know how to play for the song they are playing. There is nothing better than watching musicians like this.
Excellent! Enjoyed this. Thank you!
And today I have learnt to have a brand new appreciation of rock drummers. Wow. Dirk is a phenomenal musician.
11:10 Exactly that so hi-hat pedal on the left, then double bass typically to the right of that pedal. For people with only one bass drum these pedals are connected with a rod that twists to kick the beater; so it'd be tough to have the hi-hat pedal anywhere else. (can use a floating hi-hat of course!)
As for hi-hats, there's multiple ways double bass players play them. Dirk has two, the main one is a regular hi-hat with a pedal stand so it's open when he plays double bass, the right one a remote one without a pedal and it is tight closed.
If you want to use just one hi hat - you can use a switch lever on top of your main one which is operated by hand - where you can switch it from open to closed.
I watch Justin daily. He just seems so grounded and intuitive.
"I like that saucy hi-hat work" ... Me fucking too Justin, nailed it there.
Dirk is brilliant, so talented and humble.
Wow! Most of the technical stuff about this goes over my head, but what I draw from it is that he’s an accomplished musician 👍🏻
When using double bass drums, there is usually either a clutch that will release the top hi hat which will reengage when the pedal is pressed, or a remote hi hat that is always closed. 🤘
He has two sets of hats. Left set is standard operated by the pedal and one on the right to play open handed that is fixed in distance between cymbals to give he sound you want. In this case an open washy sound. You can also get remote hi hat operation for those that prefer to play the hats open handed so pedal i=on oeft foot as normal but hats to the right of the kit👍
Love this! Those fills gave me chills :)
Nice rhyme.
Hey there Justin! When playing double kick drums or a double pedal, your left foot (for a right-handed player, obviously) goes back and forth between the hi-hat pedal and the left kick pedal. When playing the left kick pedal, the hi-hat simply stays open, unless you use a device called a drop clutch. A drop clutch is a hi-hat clutch that has a lever that, when pulled, lets the top hi-hat cymbal drop on the bottom one, allowing you to play your hi-hat closed while playing double kicks. Once you press on the hi-hat pedal again, the clutch grabs the top cymbal back!
Hello, I'm Justin Hawkins, and this is Justin Hawkins Squeaks again! 😁
Eloy Casagrande playing Rescued by the Foo Fighters is awesome too!!
A big improvement on the original! I’ll probably be crucified for this comment, but sadly it’s been overplayed by cover bands that my ears were actually refreshed to hear such a superb interpretation!!
As good a drummer as I'm sure he is, his style doesn't really go with this track let's be honest.

Ima be honest. I prefer this over the original. The original is too “dancy”. This sounds like a great rock song.
It’s good for a change having a talented musician play at least one part in this song.
@@thatsamazin-Totally, I mean what kind of freak likes music you can actually dance to 😂
@@Howitchewstofeel5gum well… if you read the lyrics, they’re not exactly happy, dance party stuff. The original is the original, but I’m in the camp that thinks Dirk’s version draws out an emotional element better fitting the lyrics than the original. Just an opinion of course.

Personally my favourites of these videos drumeo have done have been the ones with domino, her attitude is infecitous and they genuinely push her right out of her comfort zone with the songs they give her but she still absolutely kills it.

Dirk's work with Soilwork is some of my favorite drumming of all-time
Dave can pick great bandmates, it's like he's trying to form a metal allstar team every 3-5 years.
It’s more that he can’t get along with many people on a long term basis. He burns people out and they either quit or get fired once they’re fed up with him. It’s sad really, I’ve met Mustaine and he can be a thoughtful person. But in the band setting, he’s the control freak micromanaging boss that you can only handle for so long.
Its nice to hear you actually say something nice about another musician.
He runs a double and a triple kick. He's an extraordinary drummer.
I love Dirk. He’s amazing. Great reaction! Cheers.
These drumeo sessions are awesome!
I watched this when it first came out. I had never heard of Dirk. At the end, I knew who I wanted to call if I ever needed some session work
I'm not even a drummer or musician, but I love watching Drumeo !!
Great episode Mr Hawkins, see you on the ice 😉👍
with hihats it depends on the kit. usually you bring your other foot off the kick drum to mute the hihat. some use their heel on the kick and their toes on the hihat, or reverse. some kits also have permanently closed hihats. but you should generally be able to use either foot for bass or hihat at any given time.
The double kick drums usually use a “drop clutch “ on the hi hats u hit it and it drops the top hat
This is the kind of reaction content I like. You've got a lot to say about everything you hear in this performance, good stuff.
I'm not a drummer, but my understanding of the high-hat problem is; let's say my left foot is my 'off' foot, ironically meaning it's both bass and the high-hat, but, if this makes sense, I'd have that foot diagonally placed across both pedals for a heel-toe action kinda thing
