Anton is such an idiot!
Hi Justin, love your show. Re: violence at R&R shows. At CBGB’s I witnessed Jayne County slam a microphone stand into Dick Manitobas shoulder blade breaking it- he had been shouting homophobic insults at her the entire show until she lost it. It was an ugly moment to say the least and worse, I brought my 9 year old nephew with me that night because I was babysitting. Talk about ruining the mood. Bad parenting moment as well. ( it was the ‘70’s) 😬
I'm surprised that no VB bottles were hurled at the stage as the curtain closed.
Australia's getting soft.
Hey Justin, Pleeeease look up the greatest Australian band of all time,
The Stabs.
They have a few proper film clips, but they also have some pretty wild live shows as well on YT.
I can't send links but there's a show at "The Pony" in Melbourne that's notorious.
Great music too, pretty sure you'll like it.
Justin, tell me someThing. What do you think about the band Pig? I'm curious to know your opinion I think they are so bad ass and underrated, his vibe is like nothing else. It's almost like the impersonation of the devil talking to God. And that visceral vocal quality of Raymond Watts.
@@juanitasamz6259did you ever see the Cheetah Crome incident with him swinging a Les Paul at someone?
If someone thinks it was fake, they need to brush up on the history behind The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Not only was I at that Fall show, I was also once nearly slugged by Anton Newcombe, but saved by my own reflexes. Sobriety, kids! You never know!
This used to be a THING. Back in the day if you lived in LA the reason you’d go to see BJM was to see if it would devolve into the band fighting itself onstage or not. It was a well known thing. I didn’t realize they were still doing that. Good to see some things don’t change.
I was at the Fall gig a few days before the NY gig in Atlanta and he was antagonizing the band there. The bassist took a swing at him, but no actual fighting took place
That Anton fella sure sounds like a real dickhead who needs a lot of therapy- I've never heard the band & don't really want to now😅
Ha! Love it. Clearly he had no clue with whom he was dealing.
they haven't done this in 15 years. Anton sobered up, got his mental health issue treated and his career took off - I saw him in 22 and it NOTHING like this. Talked to Anton. he was sober.. He needs to stay that way, and I've heard him say it many times...Now he needs to take ACTION. @@shermanmaxwell
I played drums in this band in 98' and this was a normal occurrence. Amazing band and I am still a huge fan, but it was truly the worst tour I have ever been on!
Was Anton difficult?
@@SuziQ. difficult would be an understatement. He is an incredibly talented person. Certainly one of the most talented I have ever worked with, but he is also not a nice person. Drugs only exacerbate his issues.
@arikohlson2222
I absolutely love his music, but Anton clearly has severe psychological and substance abuse issues. He seemed to have cleaned up a bit, at least by Anton standards, the past few years after moving to Germany but this tour it seems he's back to his worst habits. It's so strange, if one were to only listen to his music without knowing anything about him you would never dream such music would come from someone so ornery and abusive to everyone around him.
@@bodiwirewhy is that hard to understand?
To make good music you need to be passionate and highly emotional.
Some manage that better than others though.
Strung out in heaven era ya that wasn’t a good time for Anton, regardless a great musician but god man it’s still happening
The most shocking thing is that The Brian Jonestown Massacre still exists in any form.
Still making better records than blur or oasis.

I’ve seen them twice live , once anton shouted at the bassist for slowly creeping his volume up throughout the set , the second time there was no trouble at all ,I think anton is a bit of a perfectionist and has quite the ego , my favourite quote from the DIG documentary is along the lines of : “if Anton could , everyone in the band would just be him , he’d play all the parts “
Yeah, I remember that comment, too! 😁
I saw them once in SF - sounded good but took forever to get through even 10 songs - too much start-stopping. Anton was downing vodka pints before he got on stage. I think his ego is just masking some serious self-loathing. He was clean for a bit but has obviously fallen off again.
@@seancassidy674 for a bit? He was off booze and drugs for years.
RIGHT !!!! that is the point that a lot of people seem to be missing.....He was only on hard drugs for about 6 months and Dig emptied that -- but year later He started mental illness meds around 2010 or before ===but he couldn't drink on it - made him crazier. Doctor warned him, but he did anyway and he ended up back in crazy house -- But the meds worked so well he just '"put the bottle down" like a hammer. In this interview by a therapist before a crowd gathered for it, he seemed disgusted with his former self, said "DIG" made him feel like a. "cockroach" but realizes it's all a part to the narrative. He kept getting better and better as the years went by. By the time Covid came, recorded and released songs day after day for folks in lockdown.. HE read the comments and made some of his own -- He works 6 days a week and demands the excellence that he demands for himself. and he can be really cruel about it. But his BIGGEST problem right now: SOBER UP AND GET SOME HELP. JHMO. Where is the wife? he needs family support. He's been off twitter since mid November....perhaps he's seeking help. @@rodrigoroa6753
He´s the dictionary definition of being self-destructive so I think a band full of Antons might even be worse.
I know why these things happen. I lived on the road on tour as a drummer, and after years of sitting back watching, observing the machinations of band politics, it dawned on me one day… there was always a terrible coincidence… you won’t believe me… it was pot noodles. Yes pot noodles. If you go through history and analyse all of the band fights, the breakups, all of the problems stem from.. pot noodles. Bands, after years and years on the road, giving in to the inevitability of coming into contact with these evil things.. eventually they get inside, and wreak havoc and destruction. Now I was all for them in the early days, but when they released chicken and mushroom, I knew it was the end. It’s hard to talk about, I still get flashbacks.. the sound of foil opening. Those who know, know.
This comment did not get the recognition it deserves.

im not stranger to pot, or weed or whatever drug you speak of, but I have never heard or "pot noodles" -- what is this?
BJM - Both the best and the worst live band I’ve ever seen. When Anton’s drunk/high/manic, it’s awful. But when he’s healthy and in the moment, his art is absolutely transcendent.
Anton Newcombe is the Klaus Kinski of psychedelic rock.
I think that's a compliment
I lost it at the curtains coming down as Anton is just sitting there, like a potato 🤣
An evil spud.
Metaphor for his career I hope.
that was a cinematic closing, with the curtain coming down with Anton slumped on the amp -- geez.
Yes, that was a sad finale- him slumped over his amp in a drunken daze. Terrible beauty
Literally the campest fight ever 😂 , if a man in a neckerchief and one in a chiffon blouse start a squabbling brawl then just enjoy the show 😂
Totally agree. Handbags as they say 😂
I did production on a couple of Anton’s shows and both were train wrecks. Anton is “difficult” to say the least. The ego overwhelms the talent.
My condolences for your productions’ presumed losses. 😂😂😂
I regard Anton Newcombe as one of the truly great artists of rock. When I first saw the classic BJM lineup, back with Matt Hollywood, et al, , I came away thinking they had serious talent -- combining style elements of the Beatles (note the prodigious song-writing), the Stones (per the Brian Jones namesake), the Smiths, My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division, and more -- all channeled through Anton's voice and vision with authentic compositional artistry. I saw BJM do a three hour twenty minute set a few years ago that was brilliant -- close to perfection in its execution. I saw the current tour in San Diego and all the tensions described in this JHRA episode were present. Opinion: this looks like classic alcohol/drug dependency with its cascading consequences to and through personal/family life, work relationships (band members, agents, bookers, venues, and finally fans, patrons, show-goers) and everyone else. This kind of thing is unsustainable on both a personal and group level. It will take anyone down, even someone willful and accomplished like Anton, who may think he's exceptional. Unfortunately, what I saw was a situation looks close to terminal. Why would anyone want to go on tour with Anton again after his display of poor judgment and destructive invective on stage? How could you trust such a person? As a touring musician, you're investing your time, money, reputation and then Anton erupts. You're isolated, far from home, trapped within a bubble of Anton's increasing, madness and chaos -- a nightmare in which you must rely on someone you can't rely on. Anton's acting the victim, but his real internal collapse is, in reality, a betrayal of everyone. Anton has had a good long run, perhaps unparalleled. Who has written more songs which are actually good than Anton? To get well, he must admit that there's a problem. Then, the way back to health opens. What I see instead is denial and rage disguised as a sham of artistic integrity in an impossible, and dishonest, quest for perfection. Anton uses this as a pretext to attack the band members, upon whom he has projected his illness. Health is a choice, followed by sustained effort. It can be achieved.
He’s a narcissist. He’s a loser….a child inside.
Great comment.
Such an unlikeable character, he’s a very cheap imitation of better artists of yesteryear.

I was in a band with a bi-polar lead singer. He was a talented songwriter but we never knew which version of the guy would show up to the gig that night. And yes, the gig typically either went great, or not-so-great. It really wears on you when you know the band has potential.
I heard him say that he got on mental health meds around 2010 and they really helped him tremendously - only doc warned hm he can't drink -- or ride a bike, for some reason. ---dunno about bike, but he tested drinking. He ended up in the same Berlin psych ward with the same doctor. He realized the severity of the problem and "put then bottle down like a hammer" -- great!! The fact that these guys are my age (in their 50’s) and acting like this is like a comedy spoof! It’s like a rockumentay of a Prog rock band who started in the 90’s and still trying to tour. Everything from those ridiculous hats to having more guitarists than you need and a guy who does nothing but play a. tambourine in center stage…it’s as if they are spoofing themselves. middle aged, inebriated musicians fighting and losing their hats through out and putting them back on….😅😂

Guitarist, Ricky Maymi, instinctively dives to the ground when the drum set crashes. In tour, I've driven Ricky from SF to LA in my car to help him avoid the drunken drama from the others.
RM will rip on AN to the moon, but if anyone else does, he reverts to his role as Anton’s lackey. Guess he’ll have to find a real job now.

Saw them in Grand Rapids a couple of months ago and I'm surprised it did not end like this. During the show he constantly berated the drummer and venue's sound guy. And the same guitarist that he wrassled with was giving some shit during the show because of it. Major drama. Still managed to deliver a decent show.
I was at a BJM show like 5 years ago and he was having a go at the guitar player, in the mic, berating him for a thing he played. It was without doubt the most stressful shows I've ever watched. Kept berating the other musicians. I was in minds about telling the guitar player ''just go solo mannn, you don't need that dickhead''' but decided against it.

I'm afraid all this shows is how bad musicians are at fighting. I played a gig at Kilwinning Youth Club in Scotland where our bass player pole-axed a stage invader with his instrument without dropping a note. That same night a young lady who was tripping on acid thought she was a whale and spouted out a huge arc of cider, which splattered all over me and my keyboard. Great times.

I RAN INTO THESE GUYS IN WILLIAMSBURG BROOKLYN A FEW MONTHS BACK, WHILE SHOPPING FOR FOOD AT A LOCAL MARKET. I've got to say, I saw them in 2016 and it was one of the top five shows I've ever seen, easily. They played for more than three hours and they were completely locked in. No fighting, no long pauses, no yelling at the audience. I saw them again a few months ago and, while it was still pretty good, there was a lof of tension onstage and Anton was berating the drummer the whole way through, goign so far as to stand directly in front of him and stare at him while he was playing at one point. I saw an interview in the Guardian a while back where Anton was drinking again and combine that with a nearly year long tour and bad things are going to happen. It;s really a shame, because when they're on, they're really top level
Yeah, I realized he was drinking again too, I think it all started when he got COVID and it seems some personal shit also happened. I really hoped he might be able get it under control but it seems otherwise. I am actually worried for him, he is not young anymore and that way of life takes its toll.
you nail it : he's drinking again. Saw him in 22, talked to him for 10 minutes alone outside -- I know history of this band. Anton shined for the last 10 years or so -- let's hope he gets his act together or he will lose everything. He's 56. I forgive him fits and antics, just get some help.he did it last time.
right -- I've been saying almost the same thing to many of these posts -- he quit drinking in early 2010 I think -- COVID stressed him out because he started putting out songs almost every day -- and got a flood of praise from folks in Lockdown...it became a regular thing...check out Anton's song of the day --- many ended up on these two new records -- and then her went on tour --- this tour seems to have never stopped. the US and UK twice, South American, Australia -- that's too much for a band without big backing. And I have no doubt that Anton can be a complete asshole and be sober as a judge -- but Id' rather see him sober.. Correction: I do NOT want to see him drunk onstage anymore. @@rodrigoroa6753

Love that person shouting "Get him!! Get him!!" 😂 Not usually a one to endorse violence but there's so much comedy in this shambles. Love bjm and im not surprised this happened. Feel bad for the audience though. The way anton does that little run like he just did something to his brother and is running away aftward is hilarious though
My favorite part of Dig was when Anton was meeting with some record company execs…and the first thing he did was place a Freemason ring on the table. As some sort of power move. So funny. I’ve seen BJM maybe 5 times, and each show was beautiful and chaotic. One show, in San Diego, was sheerly terrifying. Anton jumped off the stage and literally started strangling a frat boy/chad-type. After the chaos, he returned to the now-empty stage, and said to a now-full audience, something like “he was trying to hypnotize me with his eyes and it was a threat. I was only protecting my mind!” That’s not a direct quote, but it’s a pretty close paraphrase! Hilarious. Great band. The new stuff rivals their heyday jams! Thanks Justin. Always a fun time here. x
I love that the curtains came down while the guy was sitting on the amp.

You can't tell in this footage. But in another video of this show, when anton sits down, he knocks over a bottle of what looks like vodka, off the amp.
What a great concise reviewer, he explained it brilliantly. I was once playing in a band on tour in Germany where the guitarist had a hissy fit and marched out. Oops. My advice based on experience is, don’t mess with drummers. I’ve seen cymbals thrown like frisbees and drumsticks effectively meeting their intended targets on more than a few occasions.
Sadly this kind of behaviour doesn’t always decrease with age. We saw some very poor behaviour from musicians of a certain age (who definitely should have known better) at a small village fair gig this summer 😂, priceless.
Ha ha ha, oh my goodness! The mature side of me tells me I should highly disapprove of that fighting, but... ha ha ha, that just totally cracked me up 😂 Poor audience, though, they paid for that!

Saw BJM at the Big Top in Sydney a few years ago - they were absolutely amazing, with Anton in what I now know was exceptional form. Saw them again in 2018 at the Metro in Sydney - the infamous rape joke show. It started well, they sounded amazing, then it all went to hell with Anton becoming increasingly obnoxious to the audience and other band members. I couldn't make it to the most recent one at the Enmore in Sydney because of illness, so gave my tickets away - and apparently that gig was awful for all the reasons the Melbourne was, but not as intense. I love their music and that first gig was incredible ... but they're pretty much unwatchable now. Hope they can turn things around, but things could be too far gone.
Have you seen the documentary ‘Dig’ about the Brian Jonestown Massacre and Dandy Warhols? It’s a good few years old but the band were knocking the crap out of each other back then. There’s even a shot of Anton Newcombe kicking a fan in the front row full in the face.
I see strong similarities to a Corey Feldman performance.
Saw BJM in London back in February this year, sadly one of the dullest shows I've ever seen from a band I genuinely liked. There was a complete lack of chemistry or stage presence and they just sleepily plodded through their songs with zero excitement from themselves or the crowd as a result. Someone should make a tribute act called The Brian Jonestown Punch Up
I've seen the BJM many times and it's always verging on chaos. I've never seen one performance where there hasn't been underlying tension. The first time I saw them they spent most of the time sharing cigarettes between each other on stage, the music was entirely incidental. The gig just got going and the 11 PM curfew ended the night with only a handful of songs performed. I think Anton causes the tension for effect, for publicity but doesn't include the rest of the bandmates in on the gag so it's contrived but looks authentic.
Maybe he’s bonkers. 🤷♀️
"Leave them wanting less" 😅
"Knives can't stop me but I'll flee like a bitch from my bandmate."
They should do wrestling-style beefs between shows, going forward... and force themselves to do shows, but like, with chain-link fences between the band members... then at the end of the tour, have a show at wembley or Tokyo where they'll lift the fences 3/4 of the way thru. They could have shows where one of the band members can have a ladder (ticket buyers can vote on who gets the ladder for that show). Have weigh-ins, for publicity.
Remember the fight in front of all the record labels during their showcase in the doc “Dig”they ruined their chances of getting signed by a major back in the day.
The Jerry Springer Show Massacre.
The scamper across the stage! And the guitar player falling! Lol. Thanks for keeping us apprised of all the musical goings on.
BJM has always been kind of a train wreck between Anton's dope problems and attitude. Spending money on their shows can historically be a gamble. The documentary on them and the Dandy Warhols was pretty interesting.
