I saw Ace Frehley live in Orlando a few years ago. He was awesome. His voice sounded great and his guitar playing was exceptional. It was a super fun show. It was much more enjoyable than the last time I saw kiss.
@@ZuzuTheLemon Strangely enough, I can easily imagine Justin as an estate agent. Maybe an estate agent to rock stars but an estate agent nonetheless. 😅
First: THANK YOU for pronouncing his last name correctly! Second: Ace has always been my favorite KISS member. He IS rock-n-roll: cocky, sloppy, and heavy. I've been fortunate enough to meet him three times. Third: If I could sing in falsetto like you, I would rule the world.
He was my 1st guitar hero. I was only a kid then and I had never seen anyone like him before and fuck, could he play guitar. Very underrated in my view.
I want to see him in concert. Video clips I've seen in recent years, his playing is terrific but I'm always glad when somebody else handles the vocals. If he wanted to hit the tone and the notes a little better, I wouldn't feel that way but I think there's no shame whatsoever if he just wanted to play and not worry about singing.
Ace was the "spaceman" in KISS who was electrocuted on stage back in 1976 which inspired him to write the song, Shock Me which is featured on the Love Gun album. It was one of the highlights for many fans at KISS concerts when Ace sang it live during the Love Gun tour and beyond. I see 10,000 volts as a continuation of Shock Me from the old spaceman. Great review Justin!
That was a dramatic response. You're sounding like that guy in the tiktok video who cried, "Leave Britney Alone!". I stand by my post russ flaming. @@russfleming3169
I can't agree with you more. Twenty 24;and it STILL ROCKS a**! Rip it out was on the "To Do List" when my band broke up,well several actually over the years. Lol. But yes,Ace was my always Fav from Kiss, and I was a KISS ARMY dude. It was my favorite album when they were first released!! I'm an old fart. Ace on!!
It`s so funny alcoholics always brings everything back to being sober when hearing someone else talking about it. Okay. We get it. It`s good to have self discipline. Most of us have it.
I thought the same. So I went and listened to My Wave again and 2 hours later I'm just emerging from my Soundgarden rabbit hole. Every God. Damn. Time...
Yes. You helped me to save time finding which song from Soundgarden it was. A very good riff though. Edit: I listened to Soungarden song and it's way more interesting then this. First thing I noticed how Ace made the riff simpler to 4/4 so he can say he didnt steal it:)
Ace's cheesy lyrics have always just... worked. He has always just had a nack for putting catchy songs together, combined with a powerful rhythm, He knows the combinations that catch the ears of the average listener... just simple and up to date
Up to date? Well.. Not really. Play this song to anyone under 25. It`s NOT up to date and that`s what`s great about it. It could easily have been on his 1978 solo album. In any KISS albums. Released at any time. So it`s just classic rock in a genre that we older people loves.
Thank you for the review of Ace's Song. I believe you are right on target. That song is just proof, Ace can write some really good, catchy material. You and your band do also. Ace Rocks!!! and so does The Darkness!
I've been a KISS fan since I was 12 an now at 54,I can say that I will always love them as whole but they never were better then when Ace was laying down the tracks. If he had dedicated himself to practice an perfection, he would always be in the conversation as one of the greatest from the era. But, if you step back an see him as who he is an was, it was always real an from the gut. Flaws an all made him Ace an he proved it with his solo album. He overcame his fears an dealt with his addictions to create some all time classics. He was cool an funny, he was the rock n roll back bone to KISS an was never writing or recording because he tested an followed trends. He has been doing the same thing since the day he auditioned for KISS, rolls in with no fucks to give an just rocks out. Ace forever!!!
Brilliant yet such an entertaining analysis! You had me laughing in so many parts 😂 Ive been a big fan of ace for 45 years. He has a knack for simplicity with unforgettable hooks!
This is a fun song! Also, it's better than any Kiss song I've heard in a really long time, so I think Ace has succeeded in his quest to write the best song ever. But he might have to argue the point with Noel Gallagher, who is better than the Beatles, according to Noel Gallagher.
Hey, great review. Long time Ace fan. Saw Kiss in Boston Garden and Ace's band in an 800 seat venue in 2019. Kiss has lights, fireworks and levitating platforms. Ace has Rock n Roll swagger. He's the king of sleaze. From the South Bronx so he doesn't back down. His lyrics often reference electricity because he was electrocuted during a Kiss show in '77 and space because his Kiss character was the "Spaceman". He engineered the smoking pickup himself while in Kiss, knew how to because his hobby was building rockets. He admits that his lyrics are crap because he doesn't care. He's not for everyone, but he's authenrically himself. Gene and Paul always seem to be marketing when they talk instead of being themselves. I love the guy. With your sense of humor, I think you'd like Ace's song "Rocket Ride" off side 4 of Kiss' '77 Alive 2 record. The chorus is: Baby wants a blast Baby wants it fast. She wants a rocket ride. It's so campy that it seems like a mockumentary of a mockumentary. Sorry for the lengthy comment. Thanks for doing what you do.❤
It's limited, and predictable, and that's totally OK because it's undeniably Ace which is one thing that Paul & Gene can't understand is the key to good music. Stay true to yourself. Seems like Ace is the only one who actually lived the soundbite that Gene always claimed about KISS not being concerned with fashion and critics. Long live Ace
I think we should be happy the dude is still even around! He had more nine lives than Peter Criss! Crashed many cars, drug and alcohol abuse for most of his life, had a very destructive lifestyle.
I think you nailed exactly what is going on with most of Ace's lyrics. -- Emphasis in the wrong place, in all the right ways. No one would ever teach people to structure a song like that, but for him it absolutely works!
@justinhawkinsridesagain The Steve Ace refers to is Steve Brown from Trixter who worked with him on the album and actually co-wrote this song. Ace has said the main riff for this song was Steve’s and Ace added a bridge to the song.
George Young and Harry Vanda would add shakers, tambourines, and hand claps in the studio to several of the Bon Scott era songs to give them that swing, along with Phil Rudd's drumming of course
George and Harry were in The Easybeats (and as co producers produced pop hits pre AC/DC)and Bon had also been in a pop group, so some pop elements of the 60s were brought into AC/DC.
The best part of this is Justin reflecting on the days of trying to stay sober when he could’ve perhaps gotten along with Ace. It was really a personal thing to share and it clearly brought him back to a rougher time in his life. Cool.
Ace is not a technical player at sll; he plays and writes 100% by feel. To me, it's a very honest way to do this kind of music. I can't read music myself, because I'm legally blind, but I know what a great groove sounds like, and the two songs I've heard so far ( this one and "Walkin' On the Moon") have the perfect groove. Thank you for the review ANF your commentary :)
You're totally right about the 6 years. Ive never heard someone else really acknowledge that it takes that long to heal mentally and emotionally from decades of active addiction. If I make it til February 7 without picking up, I'll have 8 years sober but it's really only the last year and a half that I started to feel like a actual functioning person again whose emotions didn't wildly fluctuate from day to day, amoung other things. I heard some old timer say at an AA meeting something like "if it took you ten years to walk into the forest, don't think you're going to be able to walk out in ten minutes" always thought that was a good one. As far as Ace, hes the reason I started to play guitar many years ago but lately I don't know why he keeps airing this KISS stuff in public. I guess it's because those guys basically grew up together and it goes really deep for him ( gene and Paul too). I don't know. He should just let the music do the talking. But honestly I guess if I had some former band mates talking shit about me like they did Ace, I probably couldn't keep my mouth shut either now that I think about it 🤔
Agree. 5-29-1994 here. The damage we do never truly goes away. I get why Gene & Paul say stupid shit about Ace. Fact is, Ace is right, they are wrong. Ace is moving on. KISS is now… avatars?! So dumb. KISS looks like imbeciles without any help at all. KISS Army from mid-70’s here.
I'm about to start dealing with my demons. Thanks for your honesty. In my naive mind I thought 12 months would be a major milestone. Now I'm more prepared. Good luck to you. And to JH of course.
I love your colorful suit & shirt, Justin! 💖 You'll be seeing Ace when The Darkness plays the Monsters of Rock Cruise in March, so you can have another go at chatting with him. 🚢⚓🎸 Steve Brown (Trixter) produced and co-wrote this album. Anton Fig was the drummer on the recording. The musicians in the video are Ace's solo band: Scot Coogan (drums), Ryan Spencer Cook (bass), and Jeremy Asbrock (2nd guitar).
You are so hilarious! When you genuinely laugh it seriously cracks me up! You could do an awesome cover of “Back in the New York Groove” you could even do the clap thing! Woohoo! LOL Congrats on the 17 years! 😂🤘🏻👏🏻
My girlfriend just reminded me how when we were front row side stage at the Las Vegas show, the lifesaver you spat bounced off her ample rack, landed on a shelf, and was picked up by a fan. Twas a great show! Much love, Justin!
I always loved Aces songs from Kiss. He sings slightly behind the music which creates that sleaze. His guitar sound is all him. Instantly recognizable.
Ace is Fun, Has a sense of humour and does not take himself so seriously like the rest of Kiss does.. He is Rock & Roll.. He has Inspired so many Guitarists like Dimebag Darrell ect.. Ace is Awesome!!!
QUESTION regarding your favorite clapping pattern: Have you heard Bowie's song Heathen (The Rays)? He uses that clapping pattern, but there's nothing joyous about it, actually, it's funereal. I'd love to or you to give it a listen and analyze how David could add such gravitas to what is almost universally a happy clappy rhythm.
OMG! The line about Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger bickering over your suit in the 90’s? Pure comedy gold! And, I’ll have you know that I was seeing spots after looking at your suit for five minutes. Everywhere I looked for awhile after was all discolored! 😂😂😂 I loved the whole video and song, and your infectious humor, but, please, send that suit back in the DeLorean to Rod and Mick, so they can continue bickering and possibly rip it to shreds because it totally blinded me! 😵💫😵💫😵💫
Seeing how Paul and to some extent Gene , have trashed both Ace and Peter . Paul claiming neither can play and he and Gene were always Kiss . It’s nice to see Ace hitting back and putting out some really good stuff ! It’s such a shame Gene and Paul couldn’t set their egos aside during the reunion tour and into Psycho Circus record ! The original 4 members of Kiss have a certain magic together ! Kiss isn’t nearly as good with out the originals !
Paul claiming Ace can’t play is laughable. As much as I’m a KISS fan and like all the members, I noticed that Paul was happy to hand off the guitar solos to someone else. Apparently, someone who “can’t play”? LMFAO.
Dude, come on. Ace was such a sloppy mess that they had to bring in ringers and session players for almost every record. He's the one who needs to put his ego aside
Oh yeah that was great wasn’t that on Carson or something? seemed he was having the time of his life while gene and Paul sat there gettin all pissed off lol!
Ace is like Keith Richards. A survivor who still rocks. Lyrically Ace needs to mention space, electricity, science. He's claiming his Space Ace character. The smoking guitar, lit up flashing guitar body..all his Kiss trademarks.
The 4 if them are like a divorced couple who just can't leave each other alone and are continuously fighting over the kids and trying to play them off each other. lol
My 1st concert was kiss in 94 I was 4, grew up a huge fan but I think it's gross what they did to ace and Peter these last 20 yrs, now I'm just an Ace frehley fan.
Oh come on. Ace is the main one who hasn't been able to shut up and just let it all go. I really like Ace and his music. But damn I just wish he would STOP whinging about Paul and Gene already. Actually let his music do the talking, end of.
I wasn’t expecting much but this song hit me like 10,000 volts ! Absolutely amazing simple song technique of kiss … keep it simple stupid song writing. Always the best technique imo
Thanks for reviewing an Ace song.by the way that's Anton Fig actually on the drums.Ace isn't a virtuoso or great singer but he's written classics like cold gin, parasite etc.but his solos are what made him a legend and inspire millions to Puck up the guitar

He's worth a deuce!
You’re really funny. Saw you recently and you could do stand up comedy just as well as you can be a rock star.

I saw Ace Frehley live in Orlando a few years ago. He was awesome. His voice sounded great and his guitar playing was exceptional. It was a super fun show. It was much more enjoyable than the last time I saw kiss.
That suit is brightening up a grey January evening gloriously!
Did you notice the colours match his title card? 🤔 Subliminal advertising perhaps? 😂😂😂
@@NinStardust he's 'on brand' although that sounds more estate agent than rockstar 😂

Is there a correct way though? In Europe we have always said "Free-hley".
You got the sloppy part right...
Was almost expecting your sign off signiture intro/outro to be "Juuuuuustin Hawkins rides in spaaaaace....innn space!" 😂
He was my 1st guitar hero. I was only a kid then and I had never seen anyone like him before and fuck, could he play guitar. Very underrated in my view.
There is no mistaking that solo. First time I heard it I was transported back to 1978 listening to Ace rip it on Love Gun
Awesome to hear you share about your experience! Just celebrated 26 years of sobriety on 1/18/24!
I’ve always enjoyed Ace’s solo work. Seen him in concert a few years ago. He sounded amazing!
You must need hearing aides.
I'm listening to ACE over Kiss
I want to see him in concert. Video clips I've seen in recent years, his playing is terrific but I'm always glad when somebody else handles the vocals. If he wanted to hit the tone and the notes a little better, I wouldn't feel that way but I think there's no shame whatsoever if he just wanted to play and not worry about singing.
@@simonjamesyoung1990 sorry to hear...

What an album all killer no filler , easily best of the four imo
Best track Ace has recorded in a long time. Simple yet catchy. Love the chorus. Great fun song!
I've seen Ace and his solo band countless times and it's always a blast and fun to nerd out to KISS and Ace solo songs live.
and he is always authentic and quite the New Yorker, always a good thing.
Oh, stop having so much fun!!!!
Ace is a rocker. Glad to see that he's still around and making music.
I just passed 20 years sober on December 27 of this past year. Great job Justin.

Never been a huge fan, but I find this song surprisingly listenable. The driving beat of it reminds me a lot of Soundgarden's "My Wave."
Agreed.
It's solid, and it's got good guitar.
It's the same riff, albeit in 4/4 instead of 5/4.
It sounds pretty stonking either way.
My first thought when I heard it was it reminded me of FIREHOUSE by KISS
@@PrimevalMudd Not the same riff AT ALL lol
I thought the same thing right at the opening riff !
congrats on the 17 years sir
Amen man ...ACE is back and he told ya so!!
The main riff sounds like My Wave by Soundgarden.
So funny you said that, I thought the same thing when I heard it.
I thought the same. So I went and listened to My Wave again and 2 hours later I'm just emerging from my Soundgarden rabbit hole. Every God. Damn. Time...
Yep.
Thought the same thing and was scanning the comments to see if someone had already noted it.
Yes. You helped me to save time finding which song from Soundgarden it was. A very good riff though. Edit: I listened to Soungarden song and it's way more interesting then this. First thing I noticed how Ace made the riff simpler to 4/4 so he can say he didnt steal it:)
Ace's cheesy lyrics have always just... worked.
He has always just had a nack for putting catchy songs together, combined with a powerful rhythm,
He knows the combinations that catch the ears of the average listener... just simple and up to date
Up to date? Well..
Ace keeping it fresh, Kiss can’t put out anything this good go Ace !!!!!
“When I saw her face… I burnt a resistor.” Apologies to Neil and The Monkees. 🥁

Yes, Ronny Scott from Bonny Scotland was a drummer prior to joining AC/DC. Prior to joining Fraternity or the Valentines, for that matter.
Brilliant yet such an entertaining analysis! You had me laughing in so many parts 😂
Ive been a big fan of ace for 45 years.
😂 Good one.
The chorus is:
Baby wants a blast
Baby wants it fast.
She wants a rocket ride.
It's so campy that it seems like a mockumentary of a mockumentary.
Sorry for the lengthy comment.
Thanks for doing what you do.❤

I met Ace in NYC in 92'
very cool dude...
Well, after 50+ years in the music biz, living through all the changes from each decade, being as Road Worn as Ace is, this tune rocks.
Early KISS Albums are the best. For me, "Rock & Roll Over" just kicks butt...
I think we should be happy the dude is still even around! He had more nine lives than Peter Criss! Crashed many cars, drug and alcohol abuse for most of his life, had a very destructive lifestyle.
Their best album - rocks like hell!
I think you nailed exactly what is going on with most of Ace's lyrics. -- Emphasis in the wrong place, in all the right ways. No one would ever teach people to structure a song like that, but for him it absolutely works!
I have to admit that even though I’m a huge Ace fan, I didn’t enjoy this song until seeing Justin singing and clapping along. You made it fun!
@justinhawkinsridesagain
The Steve Ace refers to is Steve Brown from Trixter who worked with him on the album and actually co-wrote this song. Ace has said the main riff for this song was Steve’s and Ace added a bridge to the song.
I am looking forward to the album coming out next month. I have a feeling it’s going to be great.
Did they bury it in the mix? Because I can't hear any of it.
The best part of this is Justin reflecting on the days of trying to stay sober when he could’ve perhaps gotten along with Ace. It was really a personal thing to share and it clearly brought him back to a rougher time in his life. Cool.
It’s perfect Ace. Looking forward to hearing the record. Great video Justin!

But honestly I guess if I had some former band mates talking shit about me like they did Ace, I probably couldn't keep my mouth shut either now that I think about it 🤔
Truly well said as I am sober for 23yrs …now I know why I felt the way I did for the hard first 6 years ❤
Two months sober and doing alright .
I've never heard of this "6 years" before. I guess that explains why I feel worse, 1 year into being clean and sober after 3 decades of self abuse.
I'm about to start dealing with my demons. Thanks for your honesty. In my naive mind I thought 12 months would be a major milestone. Now I'm more prepared. Good luck to you. And to JH of course.
He's not exaggerating at all! That Space-Ace's song alone is better than what Kiss has produced in last 25 years.
I love it I thinks Ace's new album will be a belter

I always loved Aces songs from Kiss. He sings slightly behind the music which creates that sleaze. His guitar sound is all him. Instantly recognizable.
Ace was CLEARLY the best musician in KISS..followed by Peter...then the other two. Real sleazy and catchy🔥
5:16 Justin, you have the most hilarious silences, and your comic timing is absolutely on point! 🤣👍
