Thing is, dude isn't even playing to a metronome, he just has God level feeling for time. Bit that gets me every play through of this is that the drop of the tambourine on his stack is in time with him slapping it. Obviously he knows how it's going to fall, but he has zero control over it, he's just that in sync himself.
He actually explained how blowing or sucking air into/out of the porthole makes the drum sound deeper or higher at a gig. I think he played around with that a lot just how he does
Holy Bump! He's on the short list of great technicians/teachers (how can anyone say Thomas Lang is better than Jojo Mayer is better than Stanton Moore is better than etc), but I wouldn't underestimate what serving songs and being on said songs means to being on a "Greatest" list. I couldn't tell you anything about the music Benny plays on. Being in a band that people are aware of matters.
I used to watch Buddy Rich and think "maybe I'm not so good... I need more practice..." In that time passed, Benny has made my life even more difficult. Now there are two drummers I will never be as good as

@@MatthiasFrommann 16" sonor floor tom, I'm pretty sure it's a remo emperor on top and on the bottom an ambassador with some cotton touching the bottom head
Drummin' level: Benny Greb. I loved the reference to the brilliant Dennis Chambers with the deaccelerando - accelerando on the snare with the bass keeping up an even tempo.
Benny has the best groove, best dynamic, best technique and best musicality - partnered with the best sounding snare, kick, tom tom, floor tom and cymbals :) it's always amazing! It's the first time I see him reaching his own limits - amazing to see this and I admire the courage to play this! well done Benny.
Benny needs more mainstream recognition, like I’ve seen so much of this guy but every time I see or hear what he does I’m even more impressed, if I could only be a quarter as good as him I’ll be set for life
I'd say, it takes some damn balls doing that on stage. I mean, everybody knows kind of what's going on but you'll have to pull it off damn perfectly, especially in front of an audience full of drummers. :D
I dont think it's polyrhythmic. I guess he's completely doing going down and up tempos on his hand whilst doing a constant tempo on his feet. So impressive!!!
Met this guy at the Mastersession in Italy one month ago... Probably one of the best human being on this planet, and also one of those musicians who makes your stomach twists while they're playing. Thank you Benny for sharing with us this magic.
The only 21st century's drummer who's telling me a beautiful and amazing story when soloing ! He's a real musician, not just a drummer. Thank you Benny Greb.
no one can bend the feel and time quite like Benny Greb - he has this ability to change the gravitational pull of the time itself so that it isn't that it rushes or drags but time itself speeds and slows down while he remains perfectly in the middle
So Benny Greb have some of the most beautifully tuned drums Ive heard. The way his drums are tuned is what stood out to me the most when I first heard him play. Im typically more of maverick and do my own thing, rather than what other do. His drum tuning is so good, that I just had to tune my drums like him. Every drum set I have had since, Ive tuned as close to his sound as possible.
The man is so creative in his grooves and rhythm! What a friggin' talented player, listen to that single kick pedal and hat groove going on. Benny Greb, you're diamond bro! :D
Meine Fresse war das gut! Technisch herausragend, innovativ, musikalisch....
Hrishabh Singh Chris Dave is someone you should check out then, listen to this ruclips.net/video/NHyR_tPh_cs/видео.html If you like time distortion and independence then this kills. not the same style as Benny but equally as unique and amazing. dudes hand drumming skills are insane, it makes sense that he'd wanna showcase that aspect of his playing. Plus structurally it breaks up the solo a bit. Yea the floor tom thing was a little indulgent but I mean... it's a drum solo
Have you ever been to a drum expo? So many awesome drummers rearranging similar ridiculous rhythms and timing, takes more than his crazy skills to stand out there so he got creative. Don't be naive to think the common names of soloists and cymbal lines are the only crazy talent out there, go to a clinic weekend and you'll find 10 new favorite drummers you've never seen named on the internet...

That floor tom tone deserves a grammy.
And an Emmy.
I have Sonor drums and it is pretty easy to get this kind of depth from the floor toms. Absolute killer sound from Benny as usual!!
His limbs are so independent, I’m surprised one didn’t pack its bags, move out, and live a successful life during this solo. Good Lord this was insane
I wonder if metronomes practice to a Benny every day.
WINNING COMMENT
Keith Lee Agreed
This my be the coolest comment I've seen on youtube.
For Sure!

When you love to drum so much, that you can't hold yourself back and start to make out with your tom in the middle of the solo.
He gives it a blowie
He really fucking likes his floor Tom aye

I've watched a lot of drummers lately, and I mean a lot, and I'm starting to believe that Benny is the best there is.

Maintaining that kick + hi-hat groove constantly despite doing other stuff on the snare must be one of the hardest things ever. That coordination.

5:01 to the end , Dennis Chambers ‘ s solo idea. The big intro of Benny is amazing
The kick drum and floor tom combo here is literally the best drum sound I've ever heard so much punch with just enough boom
