    "45 is nowhere close to being divided by four"
    44: BRRUH

    • @S3lvah
      @S3lvah 3 года назад +84

      I think he meant it in the sense that you get a super high number (180) when you multiply it by 4 to reach a number that's divisible by 4. So you have to run through all of 180 16th-notes of the pattern before re-aligning with the 4th-note pulse.

    • @PotmosHetoimos
      @PotmosHetoimos 3 года назад +27

      Part of the reason is because this 45 doesn’t feel like 44 plus an extra beat. It DOES, however, feel like 48 with 3 missing beats - which is clear from how Yogev breaks it down here.

    • @grudley
      @grudley 3 года назад +13

      46 is closer to being divisible by 4 than 45 is, even though 45 is one off from 44. In fact, n and n+1 are always coprime

  • @S3lvah
    @S3lvah 3 года назад +79

    It's so cool how you give the same beat 4 entirely different feels by just making it (4n + 1) subdivisions long under a steady 4th-note pulse. Takes a freaking 180 16th-notes for the pattern to repeat, and when they add that extra thingy at the end anyway, the whole thing is a unique run from start to finish.

    OMG, I wonder how the guys in Gojira came up with a riff like that. Btw, l really liked you trying to fit triplets, quintuplets and sextuplets in this pattern and even if that sounded a little bit odd in comparison with the song itself, it was really interesting to listen how those subdivisions work with each other.
    And I know I say that in almost every single video, but anyway, the video was awesome and thank you so much for it.

      A lot of their crazy patterns, like this one, come from drum exercises that Mario does. The intro to Pray and the crazy part in In The Forest also came from drum exercises. On Mario's Instagram, he described the pattern in this exercise:
      "A lot of people have asked me to explain the pattern of « The Art of Dying ».
      Every group of notes starts with a different foot. RLR LRL RLR LR RL LR•RLR LRL RLR LR RL•LRL RLR LRL RL LR RL•LRL RLR LRL RL LR• 140 bpm"
      So yeah, not only does he play it seamlessly, he's literally alternating the foot that he leads each phrase with. Mindblowing stuff.

    I always felt it would have been more natural after he switches to the cymbal from the ride that the kicks were constant 16ths like the guitar, but keeping the snare pattern to make it sound more rolling, rather than breaking it up everytime you don't hear the kicks under the 16ths of the guitar.
    Still my favourite Gorjia song.
