Hey kids! Its your good buddy, Uncle Ben, here to tell you about some Stuff Gojira Does.
Stuff Mastodon Does was such a hit, it seemed like a good idea to devote an episode to the greatest thing to come out of France since champagne, the mighty GOJIRA!
I've been hooked on them ever since i heard the From Mars to Sirius album (Ocean Planet, specifically). Their guitar style is extremely distinct, with tons of inverted power chords, gallops, pinch harmonics, pick scrapes, and all kinds of goodies. We will discuss the secrets, techniques, and tricks of their signature sound in this video.

I love Gojira. Their riffs are just so heavy and not overly technical just for the sake of being technical.

As someone who learned to tap largely form playing Gojira, the line that killed me was, "Touching the neck of the guitar is illegal in many countries but is socially acceptable in France."
I never knew "Gojira" could be pronounced in so many interesting and creative ways until viewing this video.

They were originally thinking of naming the band Godzilla

They are the best
My favorite thing about them is how they are so incredibly french and speak somewhat decent English (from interviews I've seen) yet you wouldn't at all be able to tell that English isn't their best language through hearing Joe/Mario sing (iirc Mario sang in a few select songs with Joe before). In fact I don't think I've ever seen the bassist or guitarist speak, I've always ever just seen Joe being the speaker for them even in interviews lol. It's crazy how despite them being born in France and knowing French their whole lives they chose English to be their medium for vocals instead of French.
@@elitebelt The weird thing about metal is that everyone sounds normal in it's vocals in English, no matter where they're from.
Be it Scandinavia, France, Poland, Germany or wherever the fuck every metal vocalist sounds like they've lived in The US for 20 years when performing in English. And then you hear them in interviews where they have obvious accents and it's like... how???

Gojira is one of handful of bands who aren't too complex but you're hard pressed to find another band who are so tight and make such great noise
I had a neighbor who used to wake me up with hack caughing at 3:30 am every morning. At that point, we were both up, and I had no choice but to play Gojira, to celebrate the new day together. Incredibly, the neibors coughing seemed to clear up, however, my love for Gojira only grew stronger. Sadly, my neighbor moved out last month. Gojira. Thank you.
Clearly he moved away to a place with bigger speakers, so he could enjoy Gojira even more!

Ian Bull Gojira was the original Japanese title, Godzilla is the Americanized translation. Gojira is a mashup of the Japanese words for gorilla and whale, and may have been a nickname for an employee of the original production company.

Witnesses claim that the last time Ben blinked was sometime in the spring of 2004 although no known footage of the occasion exists.
I remember seeing an interview with Joe Duplantier one time and he said they actually do the scrapes with their thumb nail instead of the side of the pick. So whenever I play a Gojira song and they have that scrape effect I use my thumb nail instead of the side of the pick. In my opinion I think the nail sounds just that little bit more accurate to their sound.

Thank you for making this video. I found it really helpful. I'm a Jazz Guitarist but I got into Gojira about a year ago. This helped me understand more on how these guys do what they do. I appreciate all the work you put into making this video.
