  • Hi guys! Kyle from Carter Auto Restyling was in the neighbourhood this week, so I coerced him into giving us some restoration tips for your rusty classic! I figured out "V8 Showdown" 1958 Studebaker was a good test subject, so let's get busy!
Also: We just got in a new shipment of "Same Old Shit" coffee mugs, so get them while they last, haha!
Oh! I do not have a Telegram account or any bullshit contest going! Do not respond to any of these "contest winner" replies; they are a scam.
Thanks to everyone who subscribed to our channel here, and thanks also for all of your "likes" and comments!

Poor planning by the weatherman. Dr Kyle had two serious obstacles to overcome demonstrating his world class restoration skills:
    1. Cats hate rain so he had to compete with Poodle slurps instead. Clearly, not the best to maintain a steady hand applying schmooze…
    2. Inclement weather prohibited the ceremonial incineration of random trash prior to the training session. That’s bad ju-ju right there!
Nontheless, he overcame these challenges and delivered a world-class finished fender for all to appreciate! Spectacular! 👍👍👍

I've been a subscriber to Kyle's channel for a couple of years now and I must say I am a little disappointed with the repair on this vehicle - mainly because nothing burst into flames.
The metalworking techniques shown were classy and I learned a lot from this video about getting rust-damaged panels to line up. As Kyle was saying in one of the most recent videos on his channel, the old technique of drilling holes into the metal for the filler to hold onto isn't the way to get filler to adhere to the body without causing issues further down the track. The technique of knocking holes into the bodywork with an ice pick is a much better method as the holes are bigger and allow more of the product to squidge (the technical term) through and therefore hold the filler in place from behind. It was excellent to see this demonstrated along with the special self-tapping method of bodywork retention. Those screws are expensive and specially made for the bodywork industry so that they can be buried for years without notice on any panel.
For those not in the know, the first lot of filler that looked like the long-strand fibreglass product was actually a new product being tested by Kyle and actually has long metal strands instead. This is why Kyle and Scott had to use the grinder to bring it down smooth rather than just the hand sanding technique. The second type of filler was the short-stranded version of the new metal fibre filler and only required a DA to bring it back smooth. It's a fantastic product and restores a natural flow to the bodywork that is unmatched by previous filler types for strength and rigidity and has been used extensively by bodyworkers here in New Zealand for over 30 years (we were the original test bed for the product due to the age and condition of the average vehicle on the road at the time). Entire rockers and indeed inner door frames, sides and bases along with the odd A, B or C post have been remanufactured in situ using this stuff.
Working in the rain allowed for the optimum humidity for applying the products used and the effect of painting in the damp and cold evening that followed was the icing on the cake as far as being able to get a good finish on the paintwork. I am certain that the Studebaker will look perfect from 50 feet whereas it would not have done so previously. It was a rare car to begin with and now with the artistic license taken on the bodylines, will be unique and therefore even more desirable - a one of one in actuality.
Even though the Study may not run, she looks much better for the attention she has been given and it was a lot of belly laughs to watch. I'm an avid fan of both CWM and CAR and to see the two come together for a collaboration is always a good thing. Many thanks for sharing what would have been a great afternoon's bullshittery....er....hard work and fun. All the best.

Ooohhh, I see, like the different styles in martial arts, this is the ‘ Praying Mantis’ style. Very efficient.

Was a shame Tom wasn't available - with his keen eye - to critique the repair process & colour matching styles.

Really nice to see that Kyle came back. Fun episode. Even trying to do shoddy work I don't think either one of you know how to make something come out badly - and the Studey can use all the help it can get! 😎

Definitely need to share this video with my neighbor. He is using these same techniques to 'restore' his 71 ford f250. This will help him master his skills to sure.

Wow ! You've really thrown the gauntlet down now to Jonathan W . Even though his roadster looks demon , he's going to have to raise his game by some margin to keep up with you pair of Aces .

I sometimes did shit like that on dying beaters. If you have a bodyshop, people are not supposed to see giant rust holes. If you drove fast enough, people could not see the repairs.

  • @kensherwood4866

Well I didn't know what to expect. I've come to like the Stude more and more. Sat with a coffee watching I started laughing as Kyle worked away hammering out your commentary 🤣. I noticed you gave him the right side of the car, well he is left handed (or "cuddy wiffter" as they say here in the NE of England), till he came to paint spraying when he's right handed! At first I admired his determination to work in the pouring rain more than his results, but as things progressed I was impressed by what he, and you achieved outside in poor conditions on what was a tidy up. I'm impressed.
