Ever start out with a Basket Case to build you new bike. Let us know how you made out, and if you think this one is a good start!
That is a great bike to start off with, you can turn it into whatever you want to without hurting someone's feelings lol
Just curious how much you paid for it?
@@itsmytimeletsgo I've built them from far less than you are starting with. Good OEM parts are still available from a few remaining gray beards like myself.
@@vernleroyson331 Yes me to.The next generation is lucky there are old grey beards like us saving all the good stuff for projects. Thanks for commenting.
@@kurtfoulke5130 You got that right. I got some ideas. Thanks for commenting.
Looking forward to watching you work on this project.
Me too. Just got to find time to squeeze it in. Thanks for commenting.
This o'l girl has gone many a mile, and with a little love will go many more. She reminds me of my dad's o'l chevy 3100 that quit him one day on the way home from work, he had Bullwinkle towing, tow it home for him to our house, and there it sat in the lean to shed he built for it for 25 years. When I was 11 or so I used to climb into it and sit on a stack of old phone books, and pretend I was a on a journey across America I drove that thing a million miles and it never moved an inch. Years later he made it run and gave it to me. I went to every state in the country in that old truck and Alaska. 3 motors 3 girlfriends, and more may pop tires than I can remember. I'm 72 now and remember it like yesterday. I look forward to the many miles we will ride this old sweetheart. Be well.
There is something special about how we connect to these old vehicles, and keep them going. Thanks for sharing your story with us and hoping you have many more years of enjoyment to come . Thanks for commenting.
I love your content & I especially love your enthusiasm for older bikes. Shovelheads Forever!!!
Thanks for the kind words. As I say "Vintage Harleys are my thing" Thanks for commenting.
Man your the true meaning of enthusiastic , this is going to be great viewing ,ps , and I love ya family & the coconut truck 😊👍✌️
I get excited about bringing something back to life again. Lucy sure is shinny when you give her a a bath with coconut oil. Thanks for commenting.
LOVE THE WAY YOU BOTH ENJOYED CLEANING UP AND POLISHING AND HAVING FUN ALL TIME, YOUR DOGS ENJOYING LIFE ALSO, PERFECT.
I am so lucky to have her in my life, been together over 50 years and we still have fun together enjoying the little things that put smiles on our faces. And Norman is an important part of the family too. He brings some frustration at times but also a lot of joy! Thanks for commenting.
Can't wait to see where this one goes!!!!!!
It will take some time Tbone but that is the bset part of it. Lots of time and love to make it happen. Thanks for commenting.
I'm all in to watch this. Loving this!!
Be starting this project very soon. Thanks for commenting.
I ride an all original 1974 XLH Ironhead 15K miles, love the old iron.
Thanks for letting us know about the surving old iron out there. Ride safe! Thanks for commenting.
Going to be an awesome project!
Thanks I think so. Thanks for commenting.
Very worthwhile project!🤙
I thinks so. Thanks for commenting.
Nice. Regards from Norway
Thanks for letting me know where you are from! Blows my mind sometimes ha ha. You Tube makes the world a small place and so great to have contact with people around the world. Thats part of what keeps me going at it. Video of starting the basket case should be up next week, stay tuned and thanks again.
new subscriber here from the uk. good luck with the project, look forward to the next instalment.
Thanks for subscribing Jeff, and letting me know where you are from. appreciated! I will be getting at the baskecase soon. Just have to finish up a few things first. Thanks for commenting!
Good for You what a awesome fine, I hope to see It running soon, and driving down the road again. God Bless and Good luck.
It will take a while but I will be getting at it. Thanks for commenting.
that bike is all together, a basket case is just that in baskets and crates
Basket cases come in all different shapes and conditions. But thanks for your opinion, and comment.
Norman is one kool k-9!!! I bet he’s the cat’s meow with the ladies!!!! 😂 👍 amazing video Ralph, loved every minute of it!!! SLICK
He's a great little dog. Glad you enjoyed the video, had to put that little special shot in there for you ha ha. Thanks for commenting brother.
nice to see ya got that out of Tom's yard Ralph,be great to see her back in action. truck lookin good too
Someone had to rescue it and make sure she comes back to life once again. Glad he decided to sell it to me. Thanks for commenting.
You are a lucky man, what a great wife. Loving your channel!
You are so right I am so lucky to have her. She is my rock! Thanks for commenting.
this will be a fun one to follow. thanks for posting the project
Hoping to get at it in the near future. Summer is a busy time but stick with us. Thanks for commenting.
Cool find. I'm thinking of selling one of my bikes to go find another shovel project of some sort.
It is always so satisfying to rescue a bike that would be lost and bring it back to life again for future generations. Thanks for commenting.
Love the positive energy here! 😃
There is always s bright side, the glass is half full. Thanks for commenting.
That's the kind I love to find. Get em cheap and make a chopper. I prefer buying a clapped out shovelhead myself. Excited to see what you'll do with it
I thought this one would be right up your alley Hip. Won't be hardtailing it though as we cannot register ridgeds here anymore. But got a few ideas. Got to make the motor and trans right first as I hash around some ideas. She will tell me what she wants to be. Thanks for commenting brother.
@itsmytimeletsgo hell yeah. Looking forward to it
You guys are great. She reminds me of my mom if she married her motorcycle boyfriend she talked about back in the day..
I am so lucky to have her in my life. Been together over 50 years now and I could not live with her and her support of my passion for bikes. Thanks for commenting.
First time viewer and look forward to many more. You are a lucky man to have such a supportive wife and a good dog. Starting out with this much of a motorcycle is just great, it will be interesting to see what you do with it. Oh yeah and the truck and your shop, well that was just icing.
Welcome to the channel! You are so right when you say that. She is my rock and Norman, well everybody loves Norman ha ha. Hope you enjoy the channel. Thanks for commenting.
I look forward to seeing the progress. I always enjoy your videos. Maybe a little coconut oil would help the tins
Glad you are enjoying the content. Coconut oil may make them shine!! Thanks for commenting.
Way kewl video keep them coming gotta love them true basket cases kewl find enjoy
Thanks. It's like christmas when you find an old basket case and get it. Others might look at it say "that's just junk" but to me it's a jewel in the making. Even the wife ended up and agreed with me that the best is yet to come. ha ha. Thanks for commenting.
Cool find Ralph! My first bike was a 78 1/2 Superglide. 16years old. Man that was several lifetimes ago!
Yes the years fly by don't they. Looking forward to seeing if I can bring her back to life. Thanks for commenting.
Gonna be cool to see it come to life!
It will be quite a project, and won't happen over night but you are right. It will be cool when she is done and I will feel like I saved another one. Thanks for commenting.
Love that truck. Can't wait to see tear into this one.
Thanks I love her to. We always say "everybody loves Lucy" ha ha. I also can't wait to get at this project as well. Thanks for commenting.
I love it. Looks like your new bike might need a coconut oil bath, too. Peace out.
I wonder what it would kook like all rubbed down. Thanks for commenting Ed.
sweet truck
Thanks she is a sweet ride! Thanks for commenting.
Great looking truck and looks like a great project
Thanks very much. It doesn't take much to amuse me I guess. Just happy to still be alive and being able to work on projects that interest me. Thanks for commenting.
Hi Ralph. Wow, what a find!!! Looking forward to watching your videos on this one. I’d like to stop in one day and have a yarn with you on what we chatted about a while back
Thanks dallas. Drop by anytime and we can talk about it. Thanks for commenting.
I just found your Channel and as soon as I saw Norman, I subscribed. I have a Bagel Hound ( Bassett-Beagle,) named Cooper. I have a 77 Shovel, and a 81 Shovel, and a few Ironheads, and a Triumph and an Indian, a small stash of Vintage Hondas. Can't wait to see what you do with this old girl!
Welcome to the channel. Norman is a great little dog and big part of the family. Sounds like you have quite a colletion yourself. Looking forward to this challange. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks . We will be getting at it in the near future. Stay tuned. Thanks for commenting
The ol truck and Harley would be a perfect match with the old look showing the ages of of em 👍
You got that right. Thanks for commenting.
Great video as always Ralph! Good idea with the coconut oil, I rub wd40 on my flat black paint, gives it a little protection and a light shine. Might try the coconut oil sometime 🤘
I am convinced that the coconut oil has helped to preserve the truck for years. Give it a try! Thanks for commenting.
man o man love that old truck got here from Slick Head Customs don't know much about Harley's but like watching the videos
Thanks for joining us from Slicks. Hope you enjoy the channel. Thanks for commenting.
Wheels through time would love that bike
Yes and they would restore her to perfect condition. They have an incrediable collection and I hope I can get there some day. Thanks for commenting.
Oh wow, that’s pretty cool Ralph,, you’re working on two basket cases in less than a year,,, looking forward to follow along and a visit soon,, 😊
Chased this one for a while and finally got it. I love a challange, as you know Gus. Looking forward to seeing you soon. Thanks for commenting.
We have a 78, currently looking a little better for now but we absolutely love it.
Great to hear about these old bikes still up and running. Thanks for commenting.
My first Harley was in boxes. 58 panhead that was wrecked. Bought it in 1972 when i was 14 for $800, needed a new frame and total front end. Thankfully i had good people helping me do it. Cuz i suck at electrical.
Interesting. Such a good feeling when those projects get done. Thanks for sharing your story, and commenting.
Got one and just picked up a 65 fl 3 months ago. Has not been cranked for about 40 years and was sitting in a shop.
Congratulation!! What a great project and another one saved!! Thanks for lettiing us know!
Love a shovel head ! Reckon you could have just thrown that right in the bed of that sweet pick up . Enjoy the build and gettin er done .
Me to. Got a soft spot for these old machines. She wouldn't quite fit in Lucy's box though. We will be getting at it in the near future. Thanks for commenting.
I love her!
me too!! Thanks for commenting.
It's a chance to found a bike like this. You can choose the style than you prefer and made a cool bike. I think than if i found a bike the same state, i will use only old used parts except for the engine maybee.
Not quite sure which way I will go with her yet. But what ever it is I will be riding it in the future! Thanks for commenting.
Norman is a handsome boy! Looks like he loves riding in his dads truck! Cheers!
He is and he does love driving in the truck. Got his own special spot geared up. lol. Thanks for commenting.
I've owned a 78 shovelhead for many years now.
It started life as a shrine model 74 cubic inch, and over the years, it's unrecognizable as a flh shriner.
The only original parts are the tanks, frame, engine, and transmission.
It's like a caterpillar transformation into a butterfly or maybe a moth 🤔 hahaha.
Good luck with your new project.
Once you get the shovelhead itch, it spreads quickly, and there's no cure for it.
You just adapt and learn to live with it.
Nice. I love to hear about old bikes brought back to life. Thanks for commenting.
Nice I also have a 78 1/2 matching numbers which I first bought as a stripped rolling chassi started to collect missing odds and ends for it when the guy who bought it and was going to use the driveline for a different project contacted me and said I could buy that as well, which I did, meantime I have done some painting and gotten stuck with two other FXR projects but in due time I will start picking at it, top end and trans has been gone through, so soon the fun starts, look forward to your episodes and nice of you sharing a lifetime of knowledge.
Nice! Funny how so may projects take up your time. All good things will happen in time. Thanks for sharing and commenting.
Nice project wish I could find stuff like that here in Ireland
Not that easy to find here either. I look forward to brining her back to life. Thanks for letting me know where you are from and commenting.
Amazing find, i restore Shovelheads, those are near impossible to find like that anymore. You wil get much enjoyment from restoring and riding that one.
You are so right that they are very hard to find like this. Chased this one for a while. so glad to have gotten it. Obviously, since you restore them, you get it. Thanks for commenting.
I like a good basket case...😮
I do to when I can find one. Thanks for commenting.
Dang Ralph!!! You really knocked it out the park with this video with 30k views!!!!! Good job brother!! Congrats!!! $$$
Don't know what happened Slick but I will take it! Thanks for commenting.
Looks like a long but fun project, and you're lucky with your wife I reckon she would help more if you wanted, mine is like that too.
It will be a long project for sure. The wife helps me a lot and knows more about bikes than most guys ha ha. Thanks for commenting.

No so easy for many who are not experienced. You are right it will take time, and money. Thanks for commenting.
stormin Norman !
That he is ha ha. Thanks for commenting.
@@itsmytimeletsgo I Like your videos, are u in Canada?
I have an oil tank & battery box that's been sitting around for years you can have if you want.
I bought it at the Denver swap meet years ago when I was building my shovel. I ended up running a horse shoe.
It now has a 6 speed overdrive & a softail tank & primary. I don't think I'll need it anytime soon. It looks like shit, but not too rusty.
Wow thanks I can always use parts for projects. We don't have decent swap meets up here any more and original parts are very hard to come by. Drop me a line through my email (ralph@itsmytimeletsgo) and we can work it out. Thanks so much!!
8:36 finally, the bike
Patience is a virtue. The whole world is in to much of a hurry these days. Glad you stuck your way through it. Thanks for commenting.
Now that’s something I’ve never seen, coconut oil ? Where did you come up with that? That project will be an interesting watch.
Actually it was the wife's idea. don't know where she thought of it but ya can go wrong with coconut oil ha ha. Thanks for commenting.
i think your PRINCESS is more excited than you which is cool the pickup is bad to the bone HAPPY TRAILS !!!!!!
She can see the potential in it and has supported me though out the years, no matter what the project was. She is used to seeing things come from just an idea. So lucky to have her and would be lost without her. Thanks for commenting.
Sweet Truck Bro! Subbed 😎👊🔥
Thanks we really enjoy her. Thanks for subbing up! Thanks for commenting.
66 year old retired Harley mechanic love any shovel 80 in Evo flywheels and rods stock 80 in cylinders Andrews A/B grind cam duel plug heads dyna duel fire IGN mikuni 40 flat slide carb 24 transmission sprocket 49 rear wheel. Ya that sounds like FUN!!!! ✌️
Nice combo. I like a 25/48 sprockets when I can run the, mostly with belt drives. Small things can make a shovel work relly well. Thanks for sharing and commenting.
Congratulations.
I had a 78.5 shovel and mine said 80 on the front fender..
From what I've heard the first part of the year where wait a min
Maybe it had1340 on the front fender. Again enjoy build ..
Thanks I am looking forward to this project. Thanks for commenting.
good luke verry nice
Thanks for commenting.
How bout a rat bike to match the truck love that ol truck very sweet
Not much for rat bikes really, got a few ideas but nothing for sure yet. Thanks for commenting.
Great video nice project
Nothing like getting old bikes going
I would not say that’s a basket case at all
A true basket case or as you said to you it’s the definition of a basket case
Comes in a basket not 90% or more together just the tank off lol
Have a few old shovels
Latest is a 76 fxe frame with baskets full of parts
An 81 flt shovel that’s completely a bike not in a basket and a 76 fxe complete bike to be rebuilt
Oh and a few nitro s and an rd and and and lol
In baskets not just needing resto
Can’t wait to see what you do with it
I hear you about a basket case, as that was the early definition of one, but evey single thing has to be address on this project so although it is not in boxes it might as well be. At least with this you got a better idea of what parts are there and what is not. Thanks for commenting.
Oh I know
You should see my basket cases that are complete
I not that much younger then you I bet and never have known a basket case not to be just that
@@getbusylivenordien5394 It's a great sense of satifaction when you finally get to ride it though, and you know what you started with. Thanks
Like I have always said
Love to build
Love to ride
They made so many bikes I can’t own them all so I have to sell after building and test riding so I can buy another one
Or two
Or three
You know how that works
a tank and gas/oil your ready to rock and roll.LOL
Just about ha ha. Thanks for commenting.
cool

That guy hands you that set of Fat Bobs and my first thought is: "Those would look good with a coat of coconut oil rubbed in!". Looking forward to the progress on this one! 👍😎
You are exactly right! Thanks for following us along. Thanks for commenting.
Oh, by the way, I’ll just keep to myself what I actually use coconut oil for, because I’m pretty sure you and your viewers, Don’t want to hear it!!! 😂😂😂 👍🍺 SLICK
I figured you had some uses for that, probably the expensive stuff though no doubt. ha ha Thanks Slick.
No. We don’t care about your nasty habits.
Very cool truck. Did you ever see Jimmy Shine’s bare metal 1934 Ford pickup. If not look it up also a very cool truck. Back to bike looking forward to watching as you work your magic on this one. You can’t go wrong with old bikes or old cars and trucks. You take care and stay safe.
Thanks. No have not seen that and I will check it out. I am excited to get a this one as well. Thanks for commenting.
Basket? First bike after ETS, a Bonny in a box. Painted and polished by yours truly. Had to trade some '56 chev parts for a cherry oil bag and all new rubber from Limey Kurt. Then with some internals rings, clutch and such she gave me many miles and smiles. Nothing like Lucas electrics. Bikes years gone, but I still have the wood milk crates it came in.
Sounds like a fine job. Thanks for commenting.
Great video Ralph, I have a 78 1/2 also! Mine is the 80" with the ratchet top. I didn't know the 74 was a 78 1/2 also.
I'm thinking it's a 74 but will have to did a little deeper to be sure. I could be wrong but we will find out for sure. Thanks for commenting.
Ralph, the first two serial #s for a FL 74' is 1a - the first two serial #s for a FLH 74' is 2a - the first two serial #s for a FLH 80" is 3g " if that helps you out any".
@@BrianCarter-gh2vb Thanks for the info! I will check it out.
I love the way it looks I'd ONLY Do the motor/transmission and anything Electrical LoL Everything To STOP And Go. 😎😎😎
Haven't decided which way to got yet but sort of have a plan. Thanks for commenting.
The rust looks like orange paint at a fast glance
I can guarantee you its rust ha ha. Thanks for commenting.
That was only on the FLH. In 79 you could get either on the FX. Then in 1980 it was 80in only.
Still not sure till I get into it. Thanks for the info and commenting.
I knew a man who worked in the a mine. He drove a truck which at the completion of work each day he would wipe his truck with a rag lightly damped with disel. While the other d5ivers' trucks rust😅away, his remained in good condition.
Great story! The coconut oil works well to preserve her, especially here in our coastal sea climate. Thanks for commenting.
Can't wait to see what you do with it. Chopper? A 'sketchy' one??
Have not made my mind up yet. Got some ideas but it won't be sketchy ha ha. Thanks for commenting.
👍👍👍👍
right back at ya. Thanks for commenting.
Congrats? I'm sure you have enough spares to get somewhere with it. It happens but I hate to see old legends like this one in bad shape. Best of luck, I'll be watching. Skillpot, '94FLHTCU w/92K plus (I have a ton of spares too)

Das sind über 30 Jahre
Ich bin sicher, dass ich das kann. Es scheint, dass wir alle unsere Fahrräder lieben und sie für immer behalten. Danke für den Kommentar!
Going to take a lot of TLC, time labor and cash.😃
More time and labor for me than cash, as at least I do not have to pay someone to rebuild everything. Fortunately I have some parts, and good friends to tap on if need be. Thanks for commenting.
Maybe use the coconut oil on that too
would probably work as well. Thanks for commenting.
saw a picture of Churchill sitting on a freshly oiled tank on inspection day, during WW2.
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Thanks for commenting.
Bummer it's a 74. I don't really mean that in a bad way. I've had my 78 for the last 34 years. She ran strong as a 74. I've bumped it up lately. I really do look forward to the build. Good luck brother
Still have to check it out more but I do like the early 74's. Not to many around now. Be a little bit before we get at it but stick around. Thanks for commenting.
I guess the flames that were on the tanks were too real.
You got that right. Lucky it did not burn worse. Thanks for commenting.
I also found one of these bikes, although it’s listed as a 1979, and it has the 80-inch Shovelhead engine. I found it in an abandoned house in Pennsylvania. The story is that the original owner was a small-town policeman. For reasons unknown, he parked the bike in 1980 after only 3300 miles were on it. I’m guessing the reason was because the starter went bad, and this bike came without a kick starter. The guy died in 2009, leaving no wife or kids. The house was condemned by the state, and was demolished about a month after I removed the bike. That’s right, I stole it from a dead guy. If I hadn’t, it would’ve been bulldozed into the basement of the house with everything else. But anyway, after putting a new starter on the bike, I could never get it to run properly. Carburetor problems were a daily occurrence, until I just drained the fuel, removed the (new) battery, and locked it away inside a garage with a dozen or so other bikes that need work of one type or another. Such a shame, as it’s really a nice bike to ride when it’s running correctly… which has happened exactly twice. I used to be one of those “Harley nuts”, but anymore I don’t have the time or patience for that kind of crap. That’s why I bought a Honda.
I'm thinking this one is also an 80 after having a better look at it. Never cared what anyone rides. As long as they are riding. What a great story and another one saved. Thanks for commenting.
Little trick spay the patched piece with vinegar then wash with water
Did that many years ago to those pieces. It just took time to get the true results. Thanks for commenting.
Thats a l9t m9re complete than many of the bikes i started with. Im a shovel freak but also had some beautiful pans. The one i kept for 20 + years was my 71 ish. Haha thats what the engine was anywhay. That thing took best rider everywhere we went and when i sold it in 2000 it had well over a half million miles on it. I had everything from 67- 81 there for awhile. But the 71 was " my bike" "the ol whore" i tramped on that bike for 3.5 years hope you get that kind of enjoyment out of that one.
Sounds like you are a true lover of these bikes and have enjoyed them your whole life. Thanks for the story, and commenting.
A basket case generally comes in baskets or boxes......
That may be but I think this bike isa bit worse, been though a fire and them left out side for years. No carb, pushrod tubes open etc etc. Ya its in one sort of piece, but far from being a rolling bike. Guess its all in how you see it. Iv'e seen basket cases, in boxes, a lot better than this. ha ha . In anycase I look forward to the challange. Thanks for commenting.
I’m curious, where are you guys located? I’m figuring somewhere in Canada. Am I right? I’d like to get a basket pan head, I’ve had a shovel and now I have a twin cam and a M8 trike that I did a pretty extensive 131 build on. Hauls balls now but still looking for that pan. Take care and I’ll be watching.
Located on the east coast in Nova Scotia. Very hard to find basket cases these days let alone a Panhead one, in this part of the country. Thanks for commenting.
Omg over 8 mins in before we got to see the bike and 2 ads from you tube bloody hell mate…
Patience is a virtue they say and You Tube controls the adds not me. Perhaps you might want to look into RUclips Premium (no adds) as it may be a better option for you . Thanks for commenting
Boiled linit seed oil
I have heard of that before and am sure it would give the same results. I am totally convinced that the coconut oil has helped preserve it throught the years. Thanks for commenting.
78 and half means the motor is 80 inches instead of 74.
I will find out, just going by what I was told but that may not be the case. Thanks for commenting.
Ralph, I may have a powder black oil bag and chromed battery box I'd be willing to contribute to the project that I dont want or need! If interested, hit me up. Id barter for it some advice on a '79 80' motor that's fighting me....
Be glad to help you out if I can with your motor. Email me at ralph@itsmytimeletsgo
