Sorry chev boys. Nothing sounds better then a Perkins Engineering Holden V8. Music to my ears.
I second that
Iron lion 💪
@@perkinsengineering👍🇦🇺
Yup! And from memory serves me well, it had the grunt over the Chev as well.
@@MitchZero9 👍🇦🇺
You know good stuff about to happen when you see LP smiling.
🤓😊😂
You've produced a great channel Jack & it's always a pleasure to see your Dad, a true legend.
Many thanks!
As a Ford man i absolutely love LP! His engineering skills are unsurpassed!! Beautiful sounding engine. Thanks for these videos Jack!
Glad you like them! Cheers
It's so good to see these cars come back together.hard to believe it's 30 years ago watching this car running around Bathurst.
Crazy isn’t it!!!
@perkinsengineering it really is. I remember going to as many rounds as I could back then, amaroo, oran park , eastern creek, Bathurst. I remember getting told off by Larry for taking pictures under the cars as they were coming out of the truck at Eastern Creek the first year Russell was full time and Russell having a brake explode coming into turn one in what I think was the 95 Bathurst car.
Oran park and amaroo were always great for spectators because you could get right up to the cars.
Some things never die
Great to see the almost transparent rocker covers revealing just enough.
Even better to see the legendary LP poking about with the overalls on again. I'll never get sick of that.
Good stuff isn’t it! Cheers
Love the see through rocker covers …..
Cool aren’t they!!
Love it Jack, this is awesome, so good to see Larry in the show!
Cheers!!
Great stuff, always good to see Larry back in the workshop!! Keep the videos coming Jack!
Cheers!!
I don't ever recall a Perkins engine failing.... Superb.
Don’t jinx us!!
Good to see LP back 👍
Indeed it is!
Are the see through rockers covers for testing only or a feature of the car?
Feature 👍👍
Beautiful noise from a Holden 304 with 8 ITBs. Can't wait to see it for its first hit out for testing. Well done.
Cheers!!
The flat slide is amazing.
Cool isn’t it
I dont remember those rocker covers on this car when James owned it. Fairly certain that Perkins fitted the Chev. I can remember that with Larry squeezed under the bonnet at Mallala with a rocker issue
They would’ve been on it when they ran it in Holden configuration unless the customer/lease engine at the time was still fitted with the GM cast ones. The fiberglass rockers didn’t get past prototype stages in Chev configuration as they weren’t strong enough to hold the oil squirter rail and seal properly with oil.
Man I would so dearly love to have that slide throttle arrangement on my 5L, actually a clone of that engine would be epic 😂❤
Cheers!
C'mon unleash that sweet noise on me!
Promise me we will see LP driving it with his open face helmet so i can see the smile on his dial !
🤞
Why did they put the check engine in and change the config? Racing a different class?
I think you mean Chev Engine. Things change, the category made the “Level 1” teams switch to the Chev in 1994. This meant the development switched to Chev and over time the customers wanted the latest and greatest. At the time we could have a Holden and a Chev in the car on the same day but we had designed it in a way for simplicity but the car kept racing for nearly 20 years in the hands of various different owners so over time things get changed…
@@perkinsengineering thanks for that! Yep meant Chev but autocorrect thought otherwise.
I could listen to that engine all day everyday
Same!!
Gonna go watch the 93 bathurst 1000 right now. Memories of watchn the race. Geez 40 years ago. Omg. God bless the Perkins Family
30 years ago, it was. Feels like a lifetime.
Yes sorry I said 40, meant 30. Still a good race 😂
@perkinsengineering I was 11 years old and glued to the screen to the best category of motorsport, engineered by Perkins.
91 and 92 were a lot better
@@Fantomx7g6 . . . if you're in lurve with imported whizz bang megabuck plastic shitboxes that sounded like a fat woman's fart.
Ive never heard such a tame yet vicious sounding holden....its definitely happy to be a holden again, well done!
Cheers!!
i cant get over the old legends and how much passion they still have for their sport all these years later. Larry's smile looks as though its the first Holden he's ever built and started.
It's cool hey!
Jack, you yourself are a true winner in your own right!
No matter whats goin on in that workshop, it must truly be the best atmosphere 💯 spending the time with your old man !
Always had a soft spot watching your dad as a kid, and as i got older, and learnt to appreciate more of went into making the cars a winning component of the team, i really came to appreciate Larry's engineering background, and the way he built and ran his team..
It was a different insight into the class, that didnt come from anyone else 😊
I'm 40 now, still trying to embrace the new cars and generation of supercar drivers, i guess you always love what you grew up on?
Cheers!
How sweet Larry. Work of art. I'm surprised how well the cooling system is working coz that was a decent fair dink run and I couldn't see any fans sending air through the radiator & Hey Larry you need to replace the engine coolant temperature gauge doesn't seem to be working.
Well if the coolent system was under high pressure then a boiling point would hold at higher temperatures
Quite cold here and the thermostat only just opened. Working on the gauges, some minor issues there
Great sound Holden engines love it fantastic job guys
Many thanks!!
G'day Larry!
Gday!
Smoother than the last production holden
Wouldnt be hard 😂
Haha thanks!
This car and the win Larry and Greg shared sparked my interest in touring cars and cars in general. A fan ever since with perkins engineering memorabilia lining the walls of my workshop 😀
Good stuff!! Thanks
Touring Car's finished after 92
@@Fantomx7g6
You mean imported overcomplicated wank megabuck shitboxes finished after '92?
Strange how real local cars continued on our racetracks?
The last Holden powered V8 to win Bathurst.
Still using the slide throttle body? I hope so because that was a work of art.
Yes, you can see the slide in the video
Awesome, would love a set of those rocker covers
We may have some surplus that could end up on the website for sale soon…..
The attention to detail is fantastic. Can't believe it'll be 40 years in October when this car won Bathurst.
Jack made a mistake it's actually 30 years since that great victory!
Yeah sorry it’s 30, said the wrong number
I wasn't having a dig at you, Jack. We all knew what you meant! We all have a slip of the tongue! Great car/s by the way! I love the 93 car!
Love it 👍🏻🇦🇺
Cheers
With Holden gone, this car is a very important part of the story of its glory.
Thanks for keeping it alive.
Yes, this is the last time an Australian Holden Engine won the great race!
Hey Jack & Larry. This question might have been asked before. But was the idea behind the clear rocker covers ? Cheers Nicko
Lighter and Cheaper
Take note race teams : Larry was gentle for few minutes warming it up , not 20 seconds like you see today and there hitting 5000rpm . Waiting for Tolerance to take up is key.
Love it Jack can't beat a Perkin's sounding Holden V8.
Who made the rocker covers Jack ?
Cheers!
me and a mate where at Mallala a few years back wandering thru the paddock and up in front of us walking along was the whole Perkins clan....I think it was when Jack was racing the Fuji series.....
2006!
Hey Jack, such a sweet note this produces.
Can you tell me what the difference between this engine and an Iron Lion 304, with exception to the manifold?
Great video also mate
It's effectively a race engine, the block and heads are Holden, it has a Steel crank, JE racing pistons, Crane Rockers, Crane Cam etc. Back in 1993 it ran stock GM conrods but after Bathurst it got Carillo's so we've left them in as they are a superior and safer product!
Did Neil rebuild motor..jack fantastic video , dad looks so happy
Yes he did
Here i am looking for Holden 5L builds to get ideas for mine and this vid pops up.
Ironically I’ve had a huge poster of this car on my shed wall to inspire me to stay with the Holden V8 instead of going LS like everyone says.
Besides nothing sounds as good as the Aussie V8
Good work, nothing beats the iron lion!!
love your stories about the cars and the quality of build that go into the rebuilds
Many thanks!
Who else had a smile from ear to ear throughout the duration of this video......I know I did 👍
Cheers!! Sounds good hey!!
@@perkinsengineering gave me goosebumps
That induction noise 💪👌 When LP is giving the throttle a little tickle is something to behold its just "Sick" full stop, Thanks Jack for doing these Videos you and Dad are absolute legends cheers Fellas 👍
Cheers!
that sounds great, hearing the engine roaring back to life was very cool. well done Jack and Larry
Cheers!
So cool what you are doing with the race cars and your Dad.
People will look at these vids in the future and still be saying how cool is that old hotrod.
Carnt wait to see it on track some ware with LP at the wheel.. 🚀🚀😎😎
Cheers and much appreciated!
Bloody awesome, cheers Perkins boys
Cheers
Those rocker covers are awesome, are they just clear fibreglass?
They are single layer Fibreglass
You guys need to make more medium and large hooodies and T shirts. Looks like you'd make a fortune in those sizes. And I'd buy one of each too if they were available....
Yeah it’s always tough, we get lots of requests for the big boy sizes but they end up sitting on the shelf. Always try and order the right amount without wasting money and generally re-invest in more stock or different styles
She purrs like a big cat.
Hey Jack. Love your work 👍
Cheers!!
Sure does might even say a lion 💪👍
To see a dozen or so of these things getting around Bathurst again would be awesome.
Be ace wouldn't it!
Last to First, What a Car, What a Driver, You Legends
Last to First is 1995
Awesome work once again. I can’t wait to see it rolling on its own steam 🤙🏽
Neither can we!!
that's awesome guys. I just love the story behind Larry's famous high-port cylinder heads.
Using all available resources within the rules
That sound would have sent chills down the spine of the Ford teams and the Holden dealer team - Perkins engineering always had them looking over their shoulders especially at Bathurst .
Not wrong!!!! Cheers!!
But NOT Nissan's GTR Godzilla and Fred Gibson
@@Fantomx7g6
Some of us never were impressed with megabuck TupperWare 4X4s that couldn't get anywhere near where real 4X4s easily went.
Even Gibbo gave 'em away in the end & raced Holdens.
haha.. LP controlling lots of horsepower with a bit of wire! no wonder he is smiling!
Well it's the throttle cable, just not connected to the pedal lol
Man, that engine sounds so sweet, like it wants to rev from zero to infinity. Love to see and hear it on track.
Cant wait to get it on track!
Wow, this cool stuff. I don’t remember seeing clear rocker covers on these thing.
Yeah they were on the rocket back in 1993
That is so good, would love to see this roaring around the mountain!
Hopefully this year!!
Any particular Larry reason for the see through rocker covers?
makes for fast but rough diagnosis of valvetrain status
Lighter and cheaper to make than the OEM cast GM versions
Thats fantastic
Thanks!
Your dads face when it starts looked like he started his first ever race car
Always good when they fire up, better than having to whip the plugs out to check for spark lol
Makes me love the Holden 308 304 355 engines more
💪
What about their little brother the 253. Just like Angus Young of AC/DC.
Dead set MUSIC right there...
Gotta say i alMost made a complete fool of myself at Larrys Local 🍺 when i found out he drank there and lived in the area 😂
What a true blue Aussie racer.
No bullcrap ... 🙌🏻
Cheers!!!
Ahh the memories .. cant wait to see it back on the track!:)
Neither can we!!
That’s one damn cool accelerator pedal.
And all the experience thats on the end of it.
Haha yeah we had an issue with the throttle cable matching the PE part drawing but not quite working properly in the car. The actual pedal is just a GM road car one with some slight mods for throttle ratio
Geez that thing sounds fantastic!
Does sound good!!
I love it! This was the car that won Bathurst and started my journeys to Bathurst every year. Larrikin Larry is always smiling when it comes to firing up one of his cars, keep up the great work Perkins Engineering 👍
Cheers Clint!!!
Love that engine.
Love that car.
Grinning from ear to ear.
Cool isn’t it! Cheers!!
My first bathurst experience when I was 14 years old was in 1993, I will never forget the sound of that car. And it won with the plastic!! Keep up the good work boys. I will be there in October 👌
30 year anniversary
Cheers!!
Larry Perkins a Legend who did it his way.
That's it!!
That induction noise!! 😍
Should feel it suck the air in, thought I might lose the camera at one point 😂
WOW! Keep it going Jack and Larry, love the content! That engine is an animal!
Thanks! Will do!
Now that is a Real V8 Super Car well done Jack and Larry.
Cheers!!
All I can say is legendary that revs unbelievable
Cheers!!
are those rocker covers from 93?
Same specification but not the actual race winners
awesome work lads. love it. snappy as too.
Cheers!
Special man and special car, Im a Ford fan, but this goes to show Larry's engineering nouce. When he paired up with Dick in the Greens Tuf Mustang you could see the difference Larry made to the setup and performance of that car, a true genius
Cheers!!
I don't remember my old 5.0 VP looking like that under the bonnet.
I bet you didn't have this direct to the driver accellerator set up either?
Imagine having to tread on Larry every time the lights changed to green?
Looks good doesn't it!
LP on the dodgy string throttle. Love it!
Nothing dodgy, its a proper throttle cable, just not mounted to the pedal!!!
If that doesn't put a silly grin on your face, nothing will!! Just another quick one Jack. Is the font on the door numbers correct? I seem to recall the 1's being a little taller and skinnier?
Yes they are 100% correct. We cover off the sign writing of these cars, in depth, in episode 21
@perkinsengineering Ah yes, I see. I never doubted you mate! The picture I'd seen was of the car exiting Hell corner and the angle made them appear different!
Love it!So good to see and hear it run.
A real race car, love the Aussie V8.
Perkins Engineering 🇦🇺👍
Cheers!!
Good to see it all coming together! Long live the Fishermans Bend 304 [308?]
Thanks!!
Love that sound!
It’s a cool noise
Love the videos jack
Especially the Vp ❤
I don’t quite have the race version but I’ve got two Vp ss commodores that I love
I absolutely love seeing them in race style mate
I’m 48 years old and I’ve watched your dad over the years in commodores
Love it
Keep them alive brother 🤙
Many thanks, cheers!!
Sounds awesome mate, great work by you and the team. She might need a new thermostat gasket tho 😊
Was waiting for someone to notice that. It's on an o-ring so thats a job for the week ahead :)
It looks good, but it sounds even better! Keep the content coming, I can't get enough.
Cheers!!
Would love to see both Perkins lads at Adelaide Motorsport festival running some cars
That would be cool!
🤯
👍
Looking good Larry!! Couple of young classics there, brings back memories, I still see the VP as the new car lol, that car has to be priceless
Cheers!
So awesome and happy to see this. This was the first car I saw Larry in as a kid at Bathurst, started a life long obsession with race cars. The best era of V8’s in my opinion!
Good stuff!! Cheers for watching!
Would love to see the evolution of the on-board drinking systems
We get a few requests on this, our systems remained very basic during our time, they are more advanced now though. Will see what we can do here...
@@perkinsengineering
Well, make sure you let us know when we're supposed to show up at the pub?
Just get the Ol' Girl back to Bathurst in October with the Ol' Man back in the wheelhouse & the drinks are on me!
Yeah nothing can match the sound of the old Holden V8. LP looked so chuffed.
Cheers!
Sounds crisp 👌
Sounds great
Great work guys, great to hear the old girl come to life again. I started with castrol in 94 and enjoyed the years we spent together , can’t wait to see it in Bathurst this year
Thanks!
I really enjoy watching these, especially when your dad makes a cameo appearance...❤
Cheers Pete!
Your content and stories are never anything, but music to our ears. Thank you for another great video....Larry must be over the moon for all the work that you and your trusted partners have done to get it to this stage.
Cheers Greg!! Be great once completed and seeing the car on track!!
These sound way better than the new V8 supercars
Current ones would probably sound very similar if they had our PE exhaust to be fair
I am really hoping Larry will drive it again, just for ole timers like me who love seeing 👀 the men who drove these cars doing it one more time. Looking forward to it . Fantastic efforts and great work 👍.
Yes we hope so too!
LP giving her some decent revs! Keep up the good work!
Cheers!!!
Iron Lions always sounded better than the Chevs!
Different note isnt it
Look forward to hearing it at full noise at bathurst later this year
So do we!!!
