Man....I cried when I watched this.....I was 20 when he won at Bathurst in 1993....I went out that year and bought myself a white VP Commodore......He is a true Australian Race Car Legend as good as Peter Brock and others Larry Perkins was my Hero and always will be.......Even when I looked at his race suit with the Holden Logo and the Holden V8 motor sounds it reminds me again what we lost here in this country with Vehicle Manufacturing something that is easy to give up but even harder to take back.....Thanks for sharing this Im looking forward to the next episode.

To be sitting in Mcphillamy park on both Saturday and Sunday wearing my old worn out Perkins/Ingall hat and my new 93 winning T-shirt and watching LP tear over the mountain was just absolutely awesome!!! The old fella was getting faster on Sunday and the final lap slowing down to wave to the crowd was fantastic.

      @@erlinglarsen
From the very beginning in 1948, Holden went all out to build great little engines. Always economical, never excessive in any way, affordable to buy & easy to look after. Where Holden's engines really shone was their inherant strength & durability. You could easily modify them, get up to double the original performance & still get fair economy & reliability. We've raced 'em since the very beginning & they've always been successful. The Holden V8 arrived in 1969 & they were comparatively light & compact. They were always the most suitable V8 for Aust right hand drive cars because the right bank sat ahead of the left bank to permit clearance around steering components & other gear that had to be positioned on the driver's side. I could never replace a Holden V8 with a Chev. Larry loved his Holden V8s & stayed with them when all the big money teams including the Ford teams switched to imported engines in 1993. They all thought they had a better product & they were confident when they lined up at Bathurst against Larry's old Holden. Well, wouldn't ya know? Larry's old Holden got up & beat them all!
All things considered, the Holden V8 was at least as good as any other V8. This was proven time & again at Bathurst. No 350 Camaro ever won at Bathurst against Holden 308s. They tried for years & always failed. 351 Falcons were heavy & they had to push hard to stay with 308 powered Holdens. They won occasionally, but the Holden scored more wins. Thousands of them are still on our roads & a few of them still run in Historic categories. I have one in my old LandCruiser & it gets identical economy on LPG to my similar Diesel LandCruiser. But the Toyota diesel won't rev. The Holden revs & it's a whole lot more fun to drive. I have another one in my WB ute & it's as smooth as silk. They're just a great little engine.
It's tragic they don't build them anymore. When you add up the costs associated with repairing 4 cylinder engines, it works out cheaper to drive a Holden V8 & use a bit extra fuel over an extended period.
We really were spoilt. A Holden V8 is a joy to own.

    • @erlinglarsen

@@johnbrooks9523 I've had a couple of 308 commodores wish I still had them . I'm on the hunt for a reasonably priced VH commodore with a 308 at the moment I want one before the prices get too ridiculous as they're on there way to ridiculous prices already.

Great Footage! Such a treat seeing Mr Perkins behind the wheel, sharp as a knife and hasn't missed on the double clutch hits on the downshifts. Haven't seen it done by anyone since LP! Thanks for all of your hard work Jack, sharing your skills and the knowledge behind the builds at Perkins Engineering.

What an incredible achievement Jack, the restoration and for LP to be able to drive it 30 years later, you must be so proud !
Gives you a slight insight as to what it was really like to drive the mountain in a proper Supercar for 50 or 60 laps all those years ago.
Just love the way he's checking the setup and caster as he's coming in ! Legend...

Thanks Jack for the brilliant content. Many childhood memories being brought back. Your old man is why I became a mechanic. Also how good does the old girl sound she just wants to keep climbing in the RPM... brilliant
