Bonus Episode: Peter Brock & Larry Perkins testing Holden Commodore VN at Eastern Creek Sydney 1991

- We've found some old VHS tapes, saved them onto digital and uploading what we can!
This video is from an early test day in 1991 using Brock's new #05 VN Commodore, built by Perkins Engineering.
This is some raw footage from the day, including the car on track, PB and LP chatting about the car and testing, some interviews and PB having some fun at the end!
I just couldn’t believe the sound. What a beast.Peter’s driving and Larry’s engineering and know how combining to make this race car incredible.
Have we lost something with the latest American big money cars? It’s just not the same. Pity 🤨🤷🏽♂️. Thanks for the blast from the past. 👏
Car sounds ace, Cheers!
@@perkinsengineering you made a lot of GenX ppl happy with this vid
Awesome.
This is when a Supercar actually sounded like a Supercar.
Todays racing cars and the racing itself has gone down the gurgler.
What will they do when the Camaro retires ??
It's no longer a home grown race with Mustang and Camaros running around.
It smacks of desperation really after the end of Falcon and Commodore.
RIP V8 Supercars.
Let's enjoy the video for what it is - great memories and history of our sport. Holden is no more unfortunately so let's celebrate what we had! Cheers!
@@perkinsengineering I agree Jack. Great memories for sure.
Can you upload more ?
Listen to that baby sing. That’s awesome Jack, thanks for sharing it with us 👍🏻🇦🇺
Glad you enjoyed it, Cheers!
This footage is so good,Thankyou so much for converting to you tube for all to see,Keep the old footage coming, Thankyou Perkuns Engineering for making this happen
You're welcome! Cheers!
Real gear changes
A shell that actually went down the production line
Something similar to what to could buy, not a shortened or lengthened and flattened out to make it fit on a chassis. This is what Supercars should still be, not the irrelevant crap running around today.
I still have the hat, t shirt and jacket from that year all signed by Peter
Get with the times mate, the Commodore and Falcon no longer exist. What do you want Supercars to race Corolla's and I30's. I think the Mustang and Camaro is the best Supercars can get, if you have any better ideas let me know
@@ronsmith6041 get with the times ? Last time I looked we were watching a video from 33 years ago. Just because the times have changed doesn’t mean the racing is better , it’s certainly not. All the cars are the same , there’s no strengths and weaknesses of different models or tyres or variety, it’s irrelevant.
Mustang & Camaro are truly irrelevant, too expensive & a bespoke race car. Supercars is irrelevant. They should race open wheelers as the top category instead!
A great era indeed! But nothing is forever unfortunately! Cheers!
Absolutely extraordinary footage. A 46 year old Peter in candid conversation with LP. Wow. Thanks so much for publishing this Jack. Peter and my dad were my heroes growing up and this is just superb. Dad worked for GMH for 40 years and met PB and your dad. The thing that grabs me here is the raw sound of the Holden V8 so early in the year. I always thought that LP lifted the revs as the year went on but that just sounds absolutely magnificent.
Cheers!
Hi. Great fan of Brock and perkins. My pop worked for gmh in Melbourne until 1973. 37 years in total. Where did your dad work.
@Mark-vh8qr hi mate. Dad worked at Dandenong from 1958 to 1993 and then did 5 years at Fisherman's Bend working with Chevrolet getting the LS V8 into the Commodore.
@matthewdouglas4791 Hi Matthew. Thank you for replying. Do you know how I can locate any information or pictures of my grandfather. He worked at gmh for 37 years until 1973. Fisherman's bend
Brock always knew when the camera was on! Unlike Larry he wasn’t really interested in the mechanical details!
The Iron Lion never sounded so good!. Seeing to legends of our sport together tuning an icon Holden is second to none (this from being a blue blood BTW). Sad now the neither manufacturer builds great cars in this great country of ours. I'm sure Brock and Larry would probably feel the same.
Yeah it's special history now isn't it... Cheers!
Larry Perkins is right up there with Sir Jack Brabham. Great engineer, driver and Team Manager. something that is overlooked way to often.
Many thanks for the kind word, cheers!
Two of the greatest men in motorsport and in Australian history 🍻🇦🇺💨
Not wrong there, Cheers!
@@perkinsengineering cheers to you 😉
Absolutely 🤘
Legends
That was fantastic ,Larry and Peter were a great partnership on many occasions and a formidable force of talent.👍
Yes they were! Cheers!
Great footage. The noise of the Holden V8 is so unique.
Iron Lion!!
High revving 308. Wonderful. The VN had bigger valves and fuel injection to make up for the unleaded crap fuel. What a rocket.
@@jefftheaussie2225 before 7,500 rpm limit by the category?
Yes, they revved to 9100 rpm in the early stages of the 91 season, later reduced to 8500 rpm for reliability reasons.
In 1992 the V8s were limited to 7500 rpm, and by 1993, most teams switched to the new Chevy based v8 instead.
Sounds absolutely beautiful. Thanks for taking the time to upload these videos for us as always
Our pleasure! Cheers!
Gee whiz Jack, where did you find that footage? I remember working at the Holden sales and marketing team when they launched the VN Group A SS at the brand new Eastern Creek Circuit when it wasn't quite finished. It was when we sung happy birthday to a young Neil Crompton. This was prior to your video package but it reminded me of a distant period. Thanks for sharing
Just on a VHS tape in a box in the shed! Cheers!
Fantastic vid Jack, can’t beat old school V8’s with LP & PB. Keep them coming please 🤗🤗
Cheers!
Bloody awesome! Thanks JP! This will forever be one of those cars along with PE010 where the sound gives me goosebumps. What a soundtrack!
Cool sound hey, Cheers!
Peter Brock, Larry Perkins, Jim Richards, even Ford drivers of Dick Johnson and Alan Moffat. All legends of motorsport. Apologies to other great names not mentioned, those were great days.
Not wrong!!
Thank you a million times over JP. Just when I thought I've read every article/ story and video of your Dad and PB, this pops up. Keep the volt open Jack. Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it, Cheers!
What a great era of racing. Racing in the 90's commodore was my favourite. The cars were beautiful, the drivers were all characters.
100%
Watch the racing from the 70s , better drivers and real cars compared to super toys.
In my opinion, 70',80' &'90 were great years in Australian motorsport, factory teams & plenty of privateers. Quite a few were successful L.P. and others .No so many regulations.
Watching Brocky win by 5 laps in the A9X is still my favourite memory at 58 yrs old (apart from certain obvious other activities lol)
@@barbossaa5527 100% I remember that race well I was a Bathurst that year.
Thanks Jack, what a sound, rember your Dad and PB coming to Wellington NZ in late 1991, they put on a hell of a show, 2 ND against the factory BMW on a track not suited to her.The GTR broke and was one of the only cars to handle the bumps.Beutiful sounds and clips of the 308, would have had the slide manifold on by then ,short gearing ,insane sounds.
I can rember Brock in an interview stating 547 BHP in full race trim ,proud as punch.the best sounding V8 in history.
That's the last time Brock and Perkins would share a car together! Cheers!
Thanks for sharing Jack! Ever since watching the Group A commodores live in the 1980's and early 90's I've been telling people how good these things sounded live especially at Bathurst! This footage brings back great memories and just reinforces what I thought at the time and still do.
Very cool cars and they sound ace, Cheers!
👍 🏆 that car sounded mean! I watched Brock/Perkins in this car in the 90’s at the Gold Coast Indy. What was the idea with that different wheels on the front? Extra Brake cooling like the current F1 cars?
Same wheels, just fitted with a bolt on aluminium brake fan. Some were designed to keep the heat inside the wheel/brake rotor area and some were designed to help get the hot air out quicker. Cheers!
Brilliant, Jack. I'm giving a thumbs up to all the comments and thank you.
Much appreciated! Cheers!
Jack Thank you- sitting next to the great man doing those laps would have been an experience of a lifetime - I had the pleasure of meeting him once - it’s difficult to describe that feeling of meeting an idol you have watched for so many years, when you finally meet them you think they also know you - he shared some precious moments that I was very grateful for - I first watched him at Hume Weir in the A30. - Kind Regards
Glad you enjoyed it, Cheers!
Goodonya Jack!!👍👍
Thanks for sharing Jack, Great having Larry and Brock back together. Thanks for sharing
You're welcome! Cheers!
Bloody excellent, Jack. Like hopping into a V8 Time machine🙂
Haha not wrong there, Cheers!
91, no rev limiter?
Without knowing the rules, i don't believe so!
True Aussie muscle, wonderful days of motor sport, with two of our greatest motor racing sportsmen.
Thanks Jack.
You're welcome, Cheers!
GOOD OLD DAYS
Great history. A bit disappointing to learn in later years, it was written into LP’s contract that he wasn’t allowed to beat Brock.
That's all history now! Cheers!
What a combination. Thanks for sharing Jack - thoroughly every minute of it. How many more hidden videos have you got of Larry and/or Peter? Love to see some more !!!
Not heaps unfortunately, but there's more out there I'm sure of it!! Cheers!
The burnout picture was used in Modern Motor 1991 front cover. Looks like they didnt.want tomrisk breaking an axle...so they started the burnout in the sand..
Yes that would likely have come directly from LP!
Back when racing cars sounded like racing cars. Thanks for the upload!
No problem! Cheers!!!
That car, Allan Moffat's Cenovis EB Falcon and Todd Kelly's 2008 JD Commodore are some of the best sounding V8 race cars ever... They sound Insane.
Yes the cross over pipes on TK's PE Commodore sounded ace! Cheers!
A good car made great by two of the best, not taking away from either as they both had their different inputs
Cheers!
Old Larry had those engines singing they just needed his castrol VL
"new enough under the bonnet"
This is amazing.
Thanks for posting.
This is when the internet is used for good
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!!
Those old V8’s just had a sound to them
Iron lion sounded ace, Cheers!
Why didn't LP & brocky pair up at Bathurst 91 as they had in 82/83/84?
It's a good question actually, I'll endeavour to find out! Cheers!
Cant beat the sound of a Holden V8
Not wrong! Cheers!
Whats the bet LP has that notebook stored somewhere!!
I wish! They are the PE "Blue Books" and they went missing a long time ago now unfortunately...
Thanks for this awesome footage Jack.
It was great seeing a young Larry and Peter. I didn't realise that the 91 racing Commodore had such huge rubber. The thing was cornering on rails and sounding amazing.
Q. Does this car still live today.
So thanks for sharing man ✌️ Peace from Melbourne/Pakenham 3810.
Yes this is Chassis PE012 and it's not far off commencing a restoration after a hard life!
@@perkinsengineering
Any chance of showing some footage of PE012 as she is today.
Being of a younger generation, i never got to experience the sound of a 5 litre holden touring car motor. What an unreal sound!
Cool sound hey! Especially on a race track to it self! Cheers!!
Nothing sweeter!! Enjoy.
Epic rare footage Jack, thanks so much for sharing. The Holden V8 sounds so much better (to my ears) - raw, guttural and angry compared to the Chev.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
Any idea where this VN bad boy is these days?
Yes it's not far off starting to be restored after a very hard life, chassis is PE 012. Cheers!
Awesome this brought back loads of memories, was at the Mountain that year too, legendary drivers both your Dad and Brocky ❤🍻🍻🇦🇺🇳🇿🤝🇦🇺🇦🇺👍🏁🏁
So cool! Cheers!
@perkinsengineering absolutely 💯 percent 👊 😊 🇦🇺 🍻
Fricken awesome! Thank you!
Cheers!
Hi Jack this reminds me of I think it was the ABC that did that piece on Larry and the team "In the Pits" set at Bathurst, I recall you feature in it to as a young lad, and wow what a great time of Touring Car racing in this country. And this footage of LP and PB at work, and wasn't that VN Commodore a dead set weapon, I remember it well, boy oh boy was it loud, but great old footage, and a good idea indeed looking back at how it was, love it Jack, and what about Larry and Peter, talk about charisma plus, that just isn't there these days, not like that, top job Jack, if you have access to more of that old stuff bring it on, I'm sure everyone would like to see it 👍🇭🇲
Cheers!!
Jack thanks so much mate this is buy far the best thing I've seen .Holden all the way .aussie v8 that sound .you're old man and PB talking about the car and set what tyres to run awesome. Bloody awesome.
Glad you enjoyed it, Cheers!!
Awesome! That sound ❤
Glad you like it! Cheers!
Wish he was still alive.
Gone too soon! RIP
What was it that made those cars sound so throaty?
Most likely just the exhaust system...
@perkinsengineering have you done a episode detailing the exhaust systems over the years?
How good does that thing sound !!!
Sounds ace, Cheers!
@@perkinsengineeringwould love to know engine specs on this , Perkins built twin throttle ?
Bloody awesome to see this. Behind the scenes stuff. Great era in racing. Thank you Larry and Jack.
Glad you enjoyed it, our pleasure! Cheers!
Just brilliant. And that V8 sounds sooo good.
Sounds cool hey, Cheers!
That was brilliant, more please!
Cheers!
Did these run Larry's motors ?
Yes, these are full PE built Commodores with PE Engines, PE staff, PE everything - just the wrong oil ;)
It almost looks like these blokes know what they're doing :)
You'd assume they have a rough idea ;)
Larry perkins wins bathurst in 1993 in the same car from the start what a legend
Cheers!!
That Video Footage was Superb. Just how a Great Racing Team works sh!# Out.
Glad you enjoyed it, Cheers!!
@6:50 Larry the consummate driver/engineer just a pleasure to watch a professional
Cheers!!
You've gotta love the sound of that Holden V8
👍
Iron lion!
Great video and definitely never get tired of listening to that V8 in flight … all be it even in testing . What a beast with 2 legendary masters at the helm 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Glad you enjoyed it, Cheers!
Excellent blast from the past. Thanks Jack 👍
You're welcome!! Cheers!
I remember doing 2 weeks of work experience at Perkins Engineering at their Moorabbin factory back in the early 90s.
Great memories!
Good times!!!!
@perkinsengineering The 2 best weeks of my life. Mr. Perkins and the guys were really good to work with.
What a beautiful sound, Larry built great cars .
Cheers!!
Brock finished 6th in a season dominated by the Nissans.
Dominated by 4WD Race Cars not Touring Cars!
@@perkinsengineering The touring car regulations were a joke. 4wd,rotary RX7s, turbo Sierras you couldn't buy in Australia and earlier on Porsche 911s. The regulations today are even worse and there is no Australian Touring car Championship.Great racing went on despite the rulemakers. I was lucky enough to watch your team win Bathurst with the last Australian made v8.Great You Tube channel, keep up the good work.
Awesome upload thanks Jack. VN/VP were my favourite Holden Supercar
Cheers!
To say "amazing footage !!!!!" doesnt come near the truth. Put ya boot into it and the growl is like no other sound in this world. This frustrated old driver can feeeeeel the car sliding thru corners from this video. Thank you Jack.
You're welcome!! Cheers!!
This is better than watching a race 😊
Haha it's cool footage that's for sure!
Thanks Jack!
That was a fantastic trip down memory lane I hadn’t thought about in a long time!
God bless you
My pleasure! Cheers!
Glorious sound
My word it is, Cheers!
amazing sound!
Not wrong, Cheers!
11:41 goosebumps
Fast
That's it!
I’d like to congratulate Brock on his 1991 championship and all the wonderful success the VN and Disadvantage Racing had that season.
1992 was with Disadvantage, 1991 was with PE
Just found this and had to watch! Larry Perkins. You know its true legit footage when you see the 5 stud on wheel change
Cheers!!!
There is no better sound than that of the mighty iron lion.
Not wrong there, Cheers!!
What were they revving to? It sounds in excess of 8000rpm. Whatever it is, it sounds wonderful. Thanks for sharing, it is evocative seeing and hearing the car and drivers from a bygone era.
On this particular test day I'm not sure, I'd say between 7500 and 8000rpm for sure
Thank you for replying. I remember an interview with Larry or Peter from the period bemoaning the difficulty maintaining reliability over 8000 rpm, but nothing sounds better!@@perkinsengineering
Around 9100 rpm at the start of the season in 1991, later reduced to 8500 rpm for reliability reasons, but the sound is just heaven :)
Hey Jack, was that a young Stef Zelenak as pit crew in the background on that day ?
Good question, I'm not sure! I only recognised Dean "Curl" Orr and Karl Leaver
Luv to know what dimensions size and how exactly the exhaust was made for that vn JESUS!!! That note 💯2nd to none 💯 alot of nice sounding
8s GOOD GOD!!HOLDEN SOUND FROM THE 8 GODZ💪💯❤F#$KN TUFF OZ😎 FKN
OI.....🤟🤙🤘☝💯
Cheers!
new VN style cylinder heads were game changer.
And Perkins slide intake .
This was still Twin Throttle Bodies at this stage, first slides came online during 1991 season.
@@perkinsengineering true then the new heads could breath , beath new life into old dated 308 engine who supplied crank 5.7 stroker think i remember it being Harrop or some local company
In 1991 the Perkins/Brock VNs could not live with the Nissans it would be a year before a VN would win a ATCC race when Brock won the first race of the 1992 season (Nissan would go back to winning ways in the second race) in the first round at Amaroo (In 1992 the races would be split into 2 races of 25 minutes each)
Correct!
This is an awesome find! The raw footage makes it fly on the wall stuff. Loved the exchanges of data with each other and swapping tech tips on set up. This has to be one of the best videos from this era! Thanks for posting this Jack.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
The track was young
Only a year old, maybe less!!! Cheers!
2 of the most incredible sounding V8's of all time. Do you know where these 2 cars now Jack? My 2 favourite drivers. Nothing beats the Holden V8 and your old man knew more about these engines than anyone. Miss the 'old' days. Back when race cars had 'soul'.
Yes, one is not far getting restored and the other is for sale for a hefty price tag!
what a video !!
hows the duration on that camshaft !! thing will barely run below 3500 rpm lol, absolutlely love this.
the other thing i love, two guys who could build, engineer, and drive a car, not to mention find and raise the finance required. just unbelievable, i miss this era of “real racers”. thankyou jack for sharing
You're welcome, Cheers!!
What a beast! Aussie V8 - correct me if I'm wrong, but that's an aussie V8 with unrestricted rpm (before 7,500 rule that still exists to this day)?
Yes no rev limits in 1991.
The throttle blips on downchange make such a glorious sound. Not by ECU, heel -and-toe old school style. Love it. 👍
Yes indeed! Cheers!!
my 5ltr VN doesn't sound quite as nice ....but not far off👍👍👍👍...thanks for posting
Haha won't be far off!! Cheers!
The interview with PB near the end regarding the rule changes to make the cars more comparable was interesting. This was the early stages of 'parity' which evolved into the cars all bring essentially identical, and boring.....
Well it's tricky to rock up in a VN Commodore against a turbo charged Sierra or a 4WD Nissan and think you will be competitive without some form of handicap system or parity as you say.
@@perkinsengineering oh absolutely! The poor old n/a VN didn't stand a chance against things like a Sierra that can pick up 200hp when you slide the heater controls or pull out the ashtray :) Other than going back to racing homologated production cars and multiple classes, I don't know what the answer is to keep it interesting. Today's race cars are amazing but us older guys just can't let go of the past :)
A lot of things changed from 86, Mike, DR30s.
That car looks and sounds $1,000,000
Back in the day million dollars, not today's inflation- $1m will get you an avocado toast and a latte
Hahahah Cheers!!
That’s the best thing I’ve seen since the 93 BW, get back on the road, keep ‘‘em coming JP, much appreciated
You're welcome, Cheers!
Wow this brings back memories! Being a little kid and sitting with Dad and watching the V8s whenever they came on tele here in NZ. We were raised as Holden fans and LP and PB were far and away family favourites.
Thanks Jack for this little insight into how things were done back in the day.!
You're welcome, Cheers!
Top notch piece of behind the scenes video-ed history - and Larry only swore once...........
Cheers!
Thanks for sharing Jack. Absolutely love the sound of that V8, music to my ears. Brings back alot of wonderful memories.
Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it, Cheers!!
Thanks Larry And Jack for converting and uploading this awesome footage.
Glad you enjoyed it, Cheers!
A step back in time that brought me great memories 💯 Appreciate you guys 🏁
Cheers!
Did larry stop making tailshafts for the opposition. Something changed when 05 and Peter was stranded on the start line 2 years in a row.
Not sure, I assume Advantage Racing tried to make their own version unsuccessfully...
The sound of the holden v8 can't be beat mush berry then the Chev engine sound they have a deep sound had a few holden SLT tourings great sounding beasts
Cheers!!
@14:50 lol. It's like footage for a planned doco that never eventuated. Too much for news.
It was used for feature sports stories and promotions etc.
Peter looked very well for his age. LP looks ten years older than him. How slow are the shifts back then when you had to make them through a H pattern
Cheers!
I hope those out there who follow motorsports understand and realise that - BOTH these motorsport legends are and were at the top of their game not just in Australia, but the world.
To go up against the world's leading open budget motorsport manufacturers and teams (with them getting fed down info, intel and technology from their F1 sister race teams) in an Aussie built racecar, with no where near the funding and backing and to produce the cars they did such as here is - WORLDCLASS!!
We Aussies MUST keep on going with the advancement in ICE vehicles for the reason that Australia will NEVER become full 100% EV, due to its infrastructure layout, population status and the time and costing of recharging the EVs..especially regional and remote Australia...we are NOT and never will be set up to be fully EV like Europe..due to our climate, population and our fresh water displacement.
Furthermore...until the time that Australia moves across to unlimited, 0% emission Nuclear Power (NP) so as we then have only $100 a year unlimited power bills (exactly as most other countries with Nuclear Power currently do) AND so to power everything reliable on electricity, we will until then remain -
50% EV..
50% hybrid to eventually change over to hydrogen..(as Military, Aviation, and other vehicles will all be that can't go Electric)..
RIP PB,
Long live LP, who just doesn't age, just becomes smarter...
I can only hope never to say RIP to the ICE...ever!..
Cheers guys 👍👍👍
Cheers!!
