    Perkins engineering sticking with the holden engine after other teams jumped ship for chev was something that didn't go unnoticed by the fan base.

      Just a minute, honest question, all Holden engines are GM-Holden(GM being Chevy's parent company and all Chevy engines are GM engines, and Holden have been since at least 1931 when General Motors acquired them) So what do you mean by "jump ship for Chevy"?

      @@AKDevilman Hey Jeremy, the holden engine, for reasons only known to GM management, was not the same as a chev, Holden Australia had initially imported chev small blocks for their first v8 engined cars but when volumes dictated local manufacture they clean sheeted a v8 that shared aspects of several gm US engines but was not the same as any of them,basically a "aussie" engine. Being as the number of holden engine supercars in total only numbered in the handfulls on any given year it was expensive to develop parts for them. The ford guys had the benefit of drawing on US aftermarket for their engine and our governing body eventually allowed the small block chev as an alternate for the holden guys to try and keep costs down. Larrys crew kept the holden V8 till the death and even though I sided with ford , me and many others liked to see perkins win.

    You could never get bored listening to LP, he was the definition of David in the Davies vs Goliath story. Such an Australian icon and motorsport engineering icon. Thanks for the Videos Jack they are awesome

    That was cool. Larry always outsmarted the competition with his engineering expertise. A privateer wasn’t meant to be showing the big boys how it’s done so they would just try & ban him. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃

    Back in 93 my boss asked me "Who do ya reckon is going to win Bathurst this year, Pete?" I thought about it for a moment and replied Larry Perkins. Perkins? He asks. Why Perkins? Well, because he's a driver, an engineer, he builds and understands every bit of his cars, and I reckon that this year he'll have em! :)

    The mechanical knowledge LP has I don’t think you can fully appreciate, this gentleman has probably forgotten more than most people know. Jack your a lucky boy some of your dinner table discussions growing up I can only imagine. Keep up the good work gentleman.👍

    Thanks for this. I always thought the Walkinshaw twin throttle body was sick. Thanks Larry for showing us what the big deal was about with the slide manifold. No wonder you carved up Bathurst in 93. Outsmarted and out drove the lot of them.

    I've always been a Ford guy, but appreciated the fact that Larry is an engineer and had direct input into the design and build of the cars. This is excellent stuff, I'd never heard of it until I saw this video. Excellent explanation from Larry.
    I always admired his thinking aboiut the "rules" and how to do things. I remember a bit of a furore when there was a brake light delay switch installed at some point. Gave a following driver misleading info about when the brakes were on. Though the rules didn't say it couldn't be there, they also didn't say it was allowed. It didn't last too long from memory. But it shows the way Larry was thinking about every aspect of the race and how to make best advantage.
    Cheers for the great insight in to the how and why. I look forward to watching more.

    I remember all the kerfuffle that was made at the time and if I'm not mistaken that L.P wanted to stick with his Holden engine rather than be forced to run the Chev. In my opinion, no nonsense L.P was a smart man who thought outside the square and yet made the most of the limited money available to him.

    I always admired LP for sticking with the Holden V8 for as long as he possibly could, that is "until the powers mandated in the rules that he change engines".
    I run a modified Holden EFI engine in my salt lake commodore at Lake Gairdner and never contenplated running any other type of engine!
    Go the little aussie V8!

    back in the day the word had gotten around that LP was 'adding material' to the heads and blocks at the Holden foundry, I always wondered what that was about with the heads, now we know why

      Cool mystery and future resolution tbh. Did you work at the foundry at the time yourself?, known workplace rumours that casting modifications where performed for race motors?

    Not to take anything away from Larry's good work,but if you think that's good,you should see the John Skola fabricated slide throttle assembly on the Peter Williamson Toyota Celicia.
    Done several years before this effort.
    Genius work.

    Brilliant episode, Jack. What a brilliant piece of engineering by your dad, Larry, and ta terrific explanation of the technical design and how he overcame the small flaw in its initial design. Please keep up these vlogs, they really are a side of V8 Supercars we don’t get to see often enough. Very informative and enlightening.

    Great info and thanks for sharing Jack and LP. "Hi Pot, this is Kettle", I remember LP complaining (and winning) about what other teams were doing in regards to building their cars too - I am sure he could recite the rule book backwards. LoL

    Love this stuff Jack. One of my greatest loves is Holden V8s, i cant think of Holden V8s without thinking of Larry Perkins. I wish my current 336 cuber went as good as one of thise did. I would hang onto anything you absolutely have to sell. An L.P museum would be amazing.

    👍 Great piece of Aussie automotive history.
    If I could have any engine in the world it would be a "LP custom casting" Holden v8.... Unfortunately I haven't found any just laying out on the street for the bin man.

      I worked in Holden’s foundry, more years ago than I care to think about now (the 304 patterns were sitting outside the office, the last ones cast had gone out about a month before I started). One of the guys there told me about the mods they did for Larry’s block castings. Would have loved to have met Larry then, but alas…

    What a legend Larry was and is, along with other guys from that generation such as Jim Richards, Peter Brock, Dick Johnson. Real characters of the aussie motor racing scene. On top of that you cant go past the cars of the era. I remember Brocky doing an interview on the grid showing us the almost factory complete dashboard in his early commodore. Fantastic stuff, real pioneers.

    If you won't make any more slide manifolds could you possibly sell a set of drawings? I had a twin throttle Holden V8 for 30 years was almost a daily driver. Clocked up 370,000 kms never missed a beat. Love your work Larry! You stuck with the Holden V8s and proved they were better than the Chefs!

    Very informative and interesting. That engine with the inlet trumpets is so so cool. A real race engine - you can see the dry sump down the bottom as well!

    Your dad is a legendary genius - that is evidenced by the fact his inventions where subject to rule changes coz he blitzed the opposition , brake calipers or throttle slides he was the engineering genius . God bless

    Great story … i was working at eastern creek raceway in 90 91 92 and Larry was doing some testing on one of his testing days i as a fan even then he had his white Vl Perkins engineering race car I grab a t shirt and ask him to sign it.. he then after signing it he said his texter was a board marker and straight away he said it will wash off… he then re signed it underneath with permanent ink … now that will last now.. he said and thats why to me his the great engineer and great with his followers…. Love the shirt cheers

    Interesting to hear that LP got his influence for the slide throttle set up from F3, I had always assumed it had come from the motorcycle world. Thanks for the content LP and JP.

      F1 engines had them from the early '60's, including Repco, generally following Lucas practice which was almost identical to the ones shown here - LP would have known that

    The biggest compliment the other teams could give LP was to ban his engineering ideas. Instead of getting frustrated he loves it.
