You knew back when LP was racing if he was working on something. The glint in his eye and his smile when talking to the pitlane reporters and the like.
If I had LP looking after my 'race torana' I would be wining more than I am now! What a legend. Please keep delivering amazing videos. 70s 80s 90s Bathurst ftw.
What a great insight. Thanks Jack! LP absolutely proud of this innovative upgrade! I’m sure a lot of us watching were shocked/inspired/proud! Well done
Awesome to see LP still getting excited talking about his past. He really was well ahead of everyone else and would've been great to see what he could've done had he not been continually restricted by the powers that be
Always loved your dad he did so much for the sport and always stuck it too the big team. Was the smartest men in the pit and one of the best drivers too always had a smile
Love IT!!! I'm in no way technical but love LP's crack about the opposition checking on carpet in the pits and the uniforms. I keep looking forward to the next episode. Thanks Jack and LP.
I love the grin on Larry’s face as he explains the calliper design . Great engineering Larry . Out foxed the other teams until it was shut down by them . I love your can do attitude.
Got to love Larry's mind . Hearing about his time in single seater in Europe and all the work he did on his own car . Then all the mind blowing things he's done in supercars. No other team would have even bothered to go down the paths lp has
I did know about the Perkins wide caliper/pad innovation, but what a privilege to have the man himself explain it to us. This video will forever document a significant event in our Touring car racing history. Thanks to you Jack for making it happen and to Brett for suggesting it.
absolutely fantastic, I remember the goings on back then. can never understand why, when some one comes up with a new way to do things, the knockers come out, ( although some knockers do have a good feel on the occasion ) must be the Australian way, they don't like to admit defeat, and when they were beaten fair and square, they scream, we gotta change the rules, why couldn't every one else lift their game, as this would benefit a lot more, than a sore loser. Larry and the team did a lot, and were kicked when they should have had the Order Of Australia Medal. Hats off to you Sir, you deserve more.
Awesome episode again! Hey, did LP ever get tired of outsmarting the opposition with pure straight latteral thinking, I bet not! I bet he did get tired of them changing the rules because he had outsmarted them all "Again". Well done.👍
Great story and info that shows the outstanding brilliance of LP. It's so good to get the personal insights of him after following his racing for decades
Ha ha I love how you come up with such a good solid design and once again an innovation that improved on the status quo. Another accolade for you LP. Thanks for another insight into why you were showing so well against the big dollar factory teams. PS those calipers are things of beauty.
This is Aussie Engineering at it's best, World's Best.. The thought & processes that went on by LP is world class. Easily one of the best racing engineers of our time.
Great have dad, Larry, explain first hand about how he went about designing a new innovation in brake caliber design and have a bit of one upmanship over his rivals. Thanks for the video Jack.
I loved what your dad use to do too the competition. They couldn’t handle being out smarted & getting beat by a privateer. They couldn’t beat him fair & square so the had to try & ban him. Another great episode Jack. Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻🙃🙃
Thanks for sharing another brilliant insight to Perkins Engineering. The only disadvantage of constantly being one step ahead is that the rest want to ban or copy everything you do! Worth it every time though!
Fantastic episode, like all the others, but this was great to hear the background into why this caliper was developed and it was straight from the horses mouth. Love the secret squirrel story too. Looking forward to your next episode.
What LP was able to achieve as a privateer compared to the big budget dealer teams was just remarkable. That era of racing was so interesting with the different cars and characters of the sport. These days, the cars look the same, very little overtaking and the personalities have all been sanitised to make a sport much less appealing to the public.
Yep, personality was banned a long time ago. Necessity breeds ingenuity & individuality. The rules put an end to all that and we are at this point of conformity which is just plain boring.
Jack, I remember the day you turned up as a rookie (from memory) at Oakleigh Go-kart club with LP when I was racing there (seniors) These series are so great as we never get/got info what was going on in those days. My era of treking to the mountain to watch was 1995-2010
What a good story, innovative thinking with a twinkle in the eye will always win out. I can imagine Larry going round and round Bathurst in 1994 designing the way around a pad stop in his head. It always amazed me how quickly the crew can change red hot pads, you explained that a bit Jack. Not so quick to change the pads in my WB Ute and they are cold. Who said Larry was a blown out windmill mechanic? Jeff
G'day Jack, Great video very informative and great to see and hear from the man himself LP. It always amused me when the other teams would try and ban the ingenuity of Perkins Racing. A bit of sour grapes I reckon. So thankyou for sharing another great episode Jack. ✌️ from Pakenham/Melbourne.
As per the line in the movie "The Castle", L.P, you are an "ideas man". We've seen this creative innovation from L.P time and time again, whether that be easy fault finding with the electrical tower, improving the Holden cylinder heads, intake manifold slide operation, brake calipers etc. Not everyone has that gift to think outside the box which is why I see him in the same light as the Adrian Newey's of this world.
One of my favourite things about this is that, if you look at the rigidity test report figures, Harrop was right there with - if not better - than AP and Alcon at the time. ...and then Perkins went better again :D Australia really is a cauldron of engineering nouse that is tragically underutilised sometimes. So... Larry Bar next, featuring Craig Lowndes?
I remember a drag racer who used Australian valve springs which kept their seat pressure a lot better than some of the American brands. Larry is one example of that.
Love the fact be us still smug he beat the competition. Love this. I'm all for this type of innovation, but when caught, I say release all the info. True fans love this stuff.
Hey Jack, loving the videos... noticed that you are having a similar audio fade with the wireless mics like I have experienced in the past.. found that if I clipped mine on the underside of my hat brim.. that way the mic moved with my head 👍
I was 15 in 95 but I do remember that was the year that everyone raced in the same class. I love the ingenuity here... and I still like it even if it's a little shifty! I would've liked LP's thoughts (at the time when he was putting up the money) on how long he thought he would be able keep an advantage. I would think that the bigger teams would simply have thrown the money once they knew the game... given the time benefit would be known to them and so long as they knew it could be done without loss in performance? The rules give and take... I think we like when a small budget team can run a reasonably competitive car and we like when an underdog can get a step on the big dogs, but we don't like it when the big dogs get the stuff and series becomes a game of the haves and have nots. I'd like LPs thoughts on that... maybe he'd think he got the rough end of the stick much of the time?
Ha loved it!. Larry must have used the V8 Supercar rule book for bedtime reading material to work out the loopholes and outsmart the other teams, Genius....
Hi Jack, for 95 (or was that 96?) Sandown / Bathurst campaign our Komatsu Falcon were running a six piston Harrop caliper with the quick release bridge like your AP Caliper and we used Carbon Metallic Brake pads. From memory we changed our pads about 1/2 race distance. Great Vid mate say hi to LP for me and look forward to your next video. Kev
What was the weight difference between the caliper's? Ok little nerdy and what not, but would be interesting to know. Cheers for the detail vids they really are great.
Nah it's a good question and the battery went flat on the scales as we went to film and it uses one of these annoying coin batteries that only every 3rd supermarket carries so we had to ditch the idea on the run... I'll have to find that battery and get the weights!
Hey guys maybe a silly question? But if the piston were bigger would that mean they would travel further? And would you need a bigger brake fluid bottle?
No such thing as silly questions only silly answers! The brake fluid reservoir bottles are already big enough to take on brake pad wear, which makes the pedal longer and further travel equals more fluid transfer as such. When there are brake pad changes, the pistons get pushed back to allow for new pads, which means the fluid travels back to reservoirs, hence the reason those bottles have plenty of size to begin with!

😊
You knew back when LP was racing if he was working on something. The glint in his eye and his smile when talking to the pitlane reporters and the like.
How many times has Australian Touring Cars/ V8 Supercars changed rules due to L.P’s ingenuity/ engineering? Another great insight!
You know you're on the right path when most of your ideas end up getting banned ;)
Yeah there would be a couple 😂
I'll second that. Brilliant thinker L.P.!
Well he did have a roll cage bar named after him
@@Robvdk69 yep, the banned Larry bar that saved Craig Lowndes from a stray wheel

If there is a different way to “bake a cake”, Larry will find a way to do it. He never cease to amaze me with his ingenuity.

I love LPs sneaky grin when he talks about outsmarting the competition. 🙂

My last year of high school! Loved the days of Larry P. He was great under pressure and built his own cars. Legend!
Cheers
Love the cheeky grin @ 7:38 from someone who knows they out smarted the competition
haha the competitiveness never leaves you!
"They were too busy looking if we had carpet in the pits'! Geez I love Larry!

What caused the scuff marks on the hrt calipers?
All used calipers get marks from rubber or debris between the caliper and wheel
