GM 2.4 Ecotec Camshaft Position Sensor - How To Test & Replace
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 фев 2018
- In this video we go through the process of diagnosing the problem with my car via an OBDII scanner, testing the probable Camshaft Position Sensor failure and replacing the part. My vehicle is a 2012 GMC Terrain but the process should be essentially the same on any 2.4 Ecotec engine.

Dealer quotes $400 to fix. O'Reilly's part cost is $50 and only takes 15 minutes. Thanks again for the video. Saved $350.
Thank you SO much. I could hardy sleep last night worrying about what the problem was. Went to auto zone and got it read and mine was the intake. Watched your video and got it done. Lots of DIY videos are confusing or gloss over important steps but your video mixed with what you were telling me got me all the way through no problem. THANK YOU!!!
This has been the most detailed and helpful video I have ever watched for working on a car. Thanks to this i now have full confidence in fixing my terrain! Subbed
I just wanna say thank you so much for the video it helped me and engraved a valuable lesson in my life it's funny how one never stops learning or being able to learn from a complete stranger you got a good heart keep up your wisdom open
I know you posted this a while ago.....but I just wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. Seriously, you saved me from having to take the car to a mechanic and getting completely raked over the coals. Thank you again! Great video......the money I saved I'll have a beer for you tonight.
Thank you for video. I replaced my intake one in Sept. 2018, with your help from this video. My check engine light came back on now and it is the same thing. Last time just replaced the intake. This time I'm going to do both. As soon as that code came and how my car was acting I knew I had to come back to your video. Thank you so much!!
I've watched several videos on this subject and this one is by far the best one. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much. Did mines this past Sunday so far so good. I bought 2 of these came as a pair from Amazon for $28.00 free shipping
I’m waiting on my parts from Amazon now. As soon as they get here I’ll be replacing both my intake and exhaust solenoids. Thanks for the informative video!!
Thank you for this video! Had my sensor replaced by the shop (p0014) a year ago and it was covered under my Warrenty. It was roughly 600.00 bucks that I didn’t have to pay for due to the Warrenty but just a few days ago my engine light turned on again and according to OnStar it’s the same exact issue (p0014) if the part isn’t covered under their parts Warrenty than I’m going to do it myself. Thanks again!
Thanks for the assistance! Replace both when one went bad thanks to your help...
What a good video man. Amen to your last rant. I do all my mechanic work, my wife and i have 4 vehicles and you cloud just imagine what I’d spend just in cutting rotors and break pads, oil change. Not to mention other more expensive stuff. PEOPLE PLEASE MAKE YOUR BEST EFFORT TO DO YOUR OWN MECHANIC WORK. This job seriously is a walk in the park. Again thanks for the video.
Thank you for making this video....as someone in the medical field I rarely get a chance to save money on care repairs. You saved me $ 300 ! ! God bless and keep making those videos my friend.
Thanks, glad it could help!
Thanks for the video it was just what I needed. Informative and easy to follow. Fixed the problem. Thanks again
Good video. Repaired exactly as shown and with the tools you listed. Thanks man.
Not sure if you check old posts, but I have a 2011 Chevy Equinox and I just had to replace these, instead of taking it to a shop "440.00" I was able to buy the parts "29.99 on amazon" and fix it myself within 45 min. thanks so much man
I wasn't expecting it but with this Video I was able Pull the Exhaust Solenoid, clean it, test it (with questionable results) reinstall and after some road testing the code(s) cleared. (Before the testing was able to clear the pending codes, with just a "permanent" P0013 sticking around) So I saved around $30-$100 and time getting the parts. The part I have didn't even look dirty. Screens/Ports looked Good. Oil Level and Condition good too. Don't think I've ever seen Sludge Buildup in this engine but a quick cleaning seems to have done the trick.
Thank you so much, this video was very much needed … currently having this problem as me and my family are on our way to Panama City.
this video on replacement of camshaft solenoids was excellent !!!
Thanks a lot for the detailed video. I'll be fixing this week. Awesome video.
This is a great video. I just wish you would update the title.
These are intake and exhaust VVT solenoids.
The actual cam sensors are on driver's side of the vehicle on front and back of the cylinder head.
Are they what is represented when a p0017 code pops up?
Yep! That's the actual part title. Variable Valve Timing Solenoid....VVT Solenoid.

Thank you, showed me everything I needed to replace both sensors
Thank you. Just what I needed & you delivered with a lot of class.
I need to add it’s because of you I am getting new pistons and rings after six months of a consumption test and waiting for an available tech. There wasn’t a recall issued for Canadian models even though they have the same problem
Thank you for your video. I followed your instructions and succeeded! I can't believe the dealership could even think about charging so much for something that took me half hour to do and that was while holding my 4mo old granddaughter in one arm during it! Lol
2012 Chevy Equinox. just did mine in about 30 minutes and $95 for the pair of sensors at NAPA. Thank you.
Oh man thank you so much for posting this my wife's 2011 Terrain just threw a P0014 code and has a rough idle and stalls out periodically. Going to check these sensors now! Hopefully it fixes it. You may have just saved my life.
Did this fix your problem?
@Austin Stephenson ...and?????
Thank u so much. Took us 25 mins and $100 because we replaced both!
Do you have any video of how to disconnect the battery safely? I was reading in the manual, something about drainning the on-star back-up battery, if you disconnect the main batttery the "right" way.
Thanks for video!!! Saved me some money on labor and instructions were easy to follow. Problem solved
Was looking for the right obd2 tester for crankshaft and camshaft sensor that will work. Thanks
Thank you for this. SUPER EASY and saved me some stress & $$.
Thank you for the video.....if it should read 8 ohms what about the other one should it read 8 ohms also?
Good video. The "crazy horseshoe" is Omega, the symbol for resistance. Plus, when you first turn on the meter you should touch the leads together to measure 0 ohms. That way you're sure the meter and leads are working correctly.
This saved me sooooo much money. Thanks!
Great video I love it I’m sure it will be very helpful for one of our RUclipsrs
You saved me $300 with this video. Thank you.
I just wanna say thank you so much sir, your video help me a lot did change mine🙏💕🙏💕God bless you,
Awesome video guy ... You helped save the day . Thx
Thanks so much for this. Really helped me out. Hats of to working on this in freezing weather. just did mine in 75 degree weather. I'm such a wimp.
$61.00 a piece for these things in Southern California from the Chevy dealer BTW.
Thanks man , you’re a blessing
Looks very detailed. My car will not start and I have this exact code reading problem. I'm gonna try this out and I hope it works
Any luck
So I'm getting ready to change my oil, and I had a friend a few months ago use a scanner to tell me what my check engine was, because it wasn't a constant thing. It had said it was the camshaft sensor. Anyway, I had gotten to the "mouse nest" part and laughed, because I had paused when you said to remove the cover. When I removed it there was a spot with bits of thread and whatnot near the oil cap area.
Thanks for your video I have a question, did you thing it is a good idea to verify the ohms with the sensor installed, or need to be uninstalled?
Great video man. You helped me a lot
Thanks for the Video. Besides breaking the White/Beige Plastic Tab on the Exhaust Value's Electrical Connector (I was expecting it to pull straight out)... after cleaning the Valve and reinstalling/testing the road test cleared the codes so You saved me at least $30-100 in parts.
As it seems redundant I'm hopefully I'll have time to find some replacement tabs for the Electrical Connector(s)... Hopefully GM doesn't charge $20 each. Might invest in the removal tool if they do...
I was quoted $517.00 with them say this is hard to get at.while the engine is apart for recall this would be a good time to fix it, thanks for the info
Thank you so much for the video. I have a 2012 Terrain and was able to complete this project in about 45 minutes.
cap
Thanks Brah for the video. I have a 2011 GMC Terrain eco. I’m bout to try it now lol!!!
Do you still drive your terrain?
Since I dont work at the car dearlship anymore,I have to find someone else to replace it. I refuse to pay $400-500 to fix my camshaft, when I can do it myself. Thank you for this video
Hey, had to do mine in New Orleans with 108 feels like temp… I understand your suffering with the snow.
Can you guide me where Crankshaft sensor of 09 Saturn vue 2.4 is ?
I just tested both of mine ( 2012 Terrain 2.4l), and the resistance for both intake and exhaust was 12.5 and 12.6.
I'm stumped. Aren't they supposed to be between 6 and 8????
Good video. 2015 equinox and it guided me right through it.
Dan did u ever have one go out WITHOUT the light coming on?
Thanks for the video. Used to fix mine.
Thanks man!! Saved my buddies mom 200 bucks!
Awesome video thank you quite kindly... !!
Very informative great job with the video
You were replacing the camshaft position actuator/solenoid, not the camshaft position sensor, which is located on the sides of the cylinder head at the driver's (left) end of the engine. The links to Amazon actually call these components by their correct name. No complaints on your troubleshooting and correcting the problem, just wrong terminology.
Yes you are right what he changed is called Actuator/solenoid the Camshaft position sensor is different its on the right side of the engine near the battery i found that there are 4 sensor in my 2012 chevy Equinox 1 intake Actuator and 2 Exhaust Actuator and 3 intake Camshaft position sensor and 4 Exhaust Camshaft position sensor thanks for correcting him...
Thank you for this
Thank you SOOO much for this video. I was quoted $850?!!!
Hi, there! Very good video! Not many people explain their walk-through of the reaper and show every step like you do; thank you!! But is this the same process for a 2013 Equinox that has a V6 3.6L?
Thanks! Unfortunately that is a different engine so it will be different
Do these engines have power steering fluid and if they do where can it be checked ?
Thanks SO much!!
You saved me so much money. God Bless you.
Good Job, Thank You !
Thanks it worked for me
Great video my friend.
Great job bro
very good video . thank you
Thanks for the video, if I'm getting p0013 and p0014 does that mean it's the intake and the exhaust sensor? 2015 chevy equinox lt 2.4
I don't remember which code is specific to which part but its easy enough to pull them both out and test them.
How many miles do you have on it? If it is less than 100K it's under warrantee.
Had a mouse nest in the exact same spot lol. Awesome!
i got the code p0014 i replaced both of those solenoids but the light keeps coming back with the same code 2012 terrain 4cyl
Good stuff....just bought a used Terrain...literally on the way home the check engine light came on. Then I saw the date on the dash info screen was Feb 26, 2012.....so the scumbag that sold me the truck disconnected the battery to conceal the fault. It came up as a P0014
Got a pair of CMP solenoids on the way.
A heads up on the 2.4 if you don't already know about this problem they have - ruclips.net/video/zW3qvmYKe5k/видео.html
I'd like to know the specs on a 2014 chevy equinox vvt camshaft position actuator solenoid. I'm replacing them due to a P0011 error code. I bought AA ignition intake and exhaust solenoids. Im testing them before installing them and notices the resistance is reading about 3 ohms higher (8 to 10 on older set, about 11 on newer set). Will this affect part and overall engine performance?
Did replacing the sensor fix your problem with the p0011 code? My 2015 equinox is throwing the same code
Great video
Mine registered 9 on the ohms meter. I have already replaced mine and now it’s ticking. The motor wasn’t doing that earlier. It only threw one code one time.
very good my brother
Thanks, good video....
2008 Saturn Vue with a P0340 and P0341 Only says Camshaft position sensor A circuit manufuction. Thank you so fuckin much for the information about the A for intake and B for exhaust couldn't find that anywhere.
Replaced both cam sensors and vvt solenoids still coming back up.
Hi, I live I South Africa. Please send the link of information and the brand of coding machine/tool that you are using. Appreciates it.
I just replaced the one on the far side with the black plastic plug in, and oil is leaking all over, can i be a bad part? I made sure it was snug down but its leaking pretty good
Sounds like its not seated properly. I did this video quite some time ago so the details are fuzzy but it you may want to take the bolt out and wiggle the sensor a bit to see if it will go down any further. Also I believe it has a seal on it, maybe you are missing the seal or sometimes its possible for the old part to leave its seal on the engine and doubling up on the seals can cause a leak.
Please how does the behave when this fault code is found?
Mouse nest?? I thought that was a 1970s muff!
Thank-you !
Did this give you a powerloss as well?
Okay I just pulled mine out I got a bunch of bearing material in mine stopped it up I guess it's crankshaft bearings I don't know it's not knocking or anything
it is necessary to reset te PCM after change the solenoid?? If so how can I do it
Just erase the codes coming up with a scanner
THANK YOU!!!!! SO MUCH!!!
Thank you
Thank you...
I Replaced both but the code is still there and car still feels like before ( staling and reduce power)

The volume goes way down about halfway through the video. Hopefully you can still hear everything. If you watch till the end you will hear about the problems I was having while making this video.
What year is this vehicle?
@@uncleb727 2012
Did you disconnect the battery before replacing the sensor?
1 ohm or more means that there is enough resistance for a circuit to be open les than one means that there is continuity and that the circuit is works.
Will this cause my vehicle to use up oil? I'm getting p0014 code and my dip stick is showing there is NO oil in my motor
No this won't cause that but GM is getting sued over these engines burning oil - ruclips.net/video/vEV83-2mbBI/видео.html
No oil or low oil or wrong oil will also cause the vvt solenoid to appear bad. Fix the oil first then restore the mil and go from there
Thanks for the link the other day! Def watching and supporting content creators like you. Cheers! BTW do they have car computer mobile phone apps with a cable that goes from the car to the phone? Even better, plug a BlueTooth thingy into the car and read the codes on an app? Just wondering. No matter, I need to get one of those code readers.
I am pretty sure they have bluetooth plugins but am not 100% sure. If they dont have them they should! 😉
Yes they do. Last time I looked the Bluetooth adapter is like $250 U.S.
Amazon has bluetooth obd2 scanners for under $10 . Use the app Torque Lite (free) to read codes etc.
Good video, any problems with high oil consumption on your vehicle?
I got rid of mine before that started but it appears a lot of people have that problem - ruclips.net/video/zW3qvmYKe5k/видео.html
@@TheStruggleville Yes I like the new look of these vehicles and I was considering buying a used one. There's a couple of fixes that you can do yourself such as just cleaning out the PCV valve and hose with carburetor fluid, and some people suggest getting a vented oil filler cap that will resolve that problem and keep the rear seal from blowing.
I wouldnt buy anything with that 2.4l engine now that I know about the problems. Just not worth the hassle.
P0011 easy fix. Thanks.
It takes me 5 mins to remove both. 10 mins to go to O'riellys test both get the one i need. 5 mins to put it back together. 20 minutes total. V V T Solenoid! Variable Valve Timing Solenoid.
GM Dealership wanted $350.00 to replace both because they said both Intake and Exhaust were bad. My son in law replaced both for under $50.00 and it took less then an hour. Goes to show you just how bad the Dealership will rip you off.
okay sweet so this doubles as replacing the VVT (Variable valve timing) solenoids that are both (Exhaust and Intake) that are going out on my 12 Equinox 2.4
Will that make it not run
